Real Haunted House

Hannah House

Indianapolis, Indiana

This is house is said to have been built by a German immigrant upon arrival in the United States. During the nineteenth century, this house served as a station on the underground railroad. History says that there was a terrible fire one evening and all the slaves were burned to death in the basement. In order to maintain their secrecy, the owners walled up the section of the basement that held the dead bodies. Many have reported hearing screams and moans from the basement. In an upstairs room, a woman died in agony. Today, the room is plagued by blood drenched walls, the stench of decaying flesh, and the sound of a shrill female scream.

Hanna House is on the southside of Indy. It’s on Madison Avenue (just north of Hannah Ave.) Hannah House stands alone as an historic landmark in an otherwise modern, highly urbanized area. This home has been documented in many haunted house books. I had my graduation party there in 1999, and some of my little cousins claimed to have seen a man in a dark suit in the room that is supposed to be most haunted. They didn’t know that a man in a dark suit is one apparition commonly reported (even though it isn’t listed in this story).

I have been there a few times and it is as scary as it sounds. The Basement is really scary, especially under the stairs. The 2nd floor is kinda freaky some friends and I saw red walls, dunno if it was blood but it was still freaky.

I live literally two minutes from the Hannah House. Its located at the corner of National and Madison Ave. I have never been in the Hannah House but I have read many accounts of it in books and the internet. The one that shows up the most is the one about the slaves in the basement. But he didn’t block it off. He got rid of the bodies some how. The female screaming though is supposed to be the German Immigrant wife who was having her baby and died during child birth. According to rumor the birth was very complicated and the baby was born dead any ways. She died shortly after the baby was delivered. I have never heard of the man in the black suit. The Hannah House is routinely used as a haunted house for Halloween. It is a very creepy looking house. I always get chills when we pass it. They also give tours of the place.

I just got back from the Hannah House tour this weekend. I went with my wife and a couple of buddies. The mansion is spacious and is very old. The tour was hosted by Proof Paranormal and it costs 50 bucks a person.

We experienced absolutely nothing. True, I understand ghosts / spirits don’t show on cue and don’t always play, but I just want to voice that there was nothing special that we experienced. Two people had EVP recorders and nothing was found on audio. The video cameras and digital cameras captured nothing as well.

I was told by one of the tenants (there are 2 rooms off the balcony wing) that live there, that there is almost always activity; footsteps being heard, voices asking for help. One girl that visited for her 4th time was emotionally disturbed but nothing gave proof to her senses. She claims that a girl named Emily is in there somewhere. How she knows this, I have no clue. A medium came out around 3 or so in the morning. He was a nice fellow but I still am skeptical….especially when he used a pendulum to talk to the spirits….it was fun for a weekend away and I’m sure the property management need the funding for the house….but we sure didn’t experience anything at all on the May 13, 2006 visit…

this is just a comant for the man above(please exuse my spelling)

the pendulum is acualy a vary common tool and one of the oldest in the world, it works much like a spirte bord but is much less dangerus.

Thanks for the comment, Nightfire :)

I am somewhat familiar with the whole pendulum idea…but extraordinarily skepitical of those who use it. Please check out James Randi’s website and search around the site for use of pendulums. Personally, I think it was a totally joke the way the guy used it at the Hannah Mansion….he was obviously motioning the object.

Thanks again for the comment :)

I went there on a field trip in the 3rd or 4th grade, Im a senior now and I will never forget that place, nothing really scary or anything happened but it was still a really cool and interesting place and if I still lived up there I would visit it again but not because of superstions…

Anyone else go to the Hannah Mansion? I would love to hear the stories….Personally, I will never fork 50 bucks for that overnight stay again…fun for a one-time deal, but a waste of resources and time and I am always open-minded about everything in life. Seemed to me (and still does) that because the Hannah Mansion is in need of money to keep it still erect, the paranormal groups have these “fright nights” to help with their bills. Don’t plan on seeing / recording anything.

I have been to the Hannah House, but not inside. I’ve played around on the property quite a few times. I’ve been up & down the outer staircase to the upper balcony & peeked through windows.
The basement looks creepy. I’ve always gone during the day, but nothing has happened. The only thing I’ve seen with my own eyes is a giant knife at the bottom of the well outside the house. Someone probably dropped down there just screwing around, but it’s still creepy. This was just last month. I do plan on paying the $50 just to see the amazing architecture of the place. I don’t mind donating to keep the place in tact.

There is no smells of rotting flesh….someone just added that to the legend…As I mentioned above…I have been to the Hannah House…nothing special.

I have been to the Hanna House on four different occasions and I have connected with the spirit of a little girl there, Grandma, and a few other people, who died there. I feel at home each time I arrive on the property, as if something welcomes me there and wants me to be there. I have also suffered with spirit attachment, where the spirit attahces itself to me and I attach myself to it, to the point where I get really sad whenever its time to leave the house. I call them my friends and my extended family. And the little girl, I think of her as my daughter. I’ll keep this short but I could go on.

And the description of the Hanna House on here isn’t factual, Mr. Hanna was not German and there is no blood stained walls, no smell of death or decay. Thats all a bunch of ****.

My daughter and I did the over night stay on June 10 or around then. The house was beautiful, but I believe alot of that stuff was not real. The only thing we felt was someone was standing beside us in one of the up-stairs bedroom. And we saw something white walk beside both of us while we was outside. Also we did smell something a few times that night but it smelt like a ****.
