Real Haunted Houses

Real Haunted House

Hannah House

Indianapolis, Indiana

This is house is said to have been built by a German immigrant upon arrival in the United States. During the nineteenth century, this house served as a station on the underground railroad. History says that there was a terrible fire one evening and all the slaves were burned to death in the basement. In order to maintain their secrecy, the owners walled up the section of the basement that held the dead bodies. Many have reported hearing screams and moans from the basement. In an upstairs room, a woman died in agony. Today, the room is plagued by blood drenched walls, the stench of decaying flesh, and the sound of a shrill female scream.

Back in the 1970′s when the Hannah House was first opened up for tours after years of being boarded up (and before it was renovated) I went there on a tour with my family. I had never previously heard any stories about its being haunted or that it was associated with the Underground Railroad. I was a teenager at the time and in no way claustrophobic (I had been spelunking through very narrow spaces with no problems). But when I went into the root cellar of the house, often referred to as a basement, I had an absolute sense of panic in the space, a feeling that I could not breathe and that I HAD to get out of there! I only foungd out about 10 years later that this was the cellar in which the Underground Railroad slaves had experienced a fire in which many of them had died of suffocation. As soon as I left the cellar the sensation left me.

Ever since this incident and my eventually hearing about the deaths of the slaves, I have firmly believed that some sort of psychic, if not physical residue can remain after a violent or disturbed death. i still feel chills every time I tell the story to someone else.

My husband and I worked in the Hannah House for their annual Halloween haunted house in 1982. Then we went to a party there that the owner threw for the people who worked in the haunted house for ahlloween. the house is definately haunted. I’m very spiritiaul, and felt lots of things going on in the house both times i was there. None of it bothered me because I grew up in a husnted house that’s really got some evil things residing in it. the Hannah House is mild comapred to the house I grew up in.
The Nichols Mansion is haunted also. Just drive by slowly and feel the vibes. You can’t miss the house if you are looking for it. It’s painted bright yellow with brown trim.

When the Hanna House was used for charity as a haunted house I volenteered my time as a “ghost” or whatever. I had 2 “events” that happened to me and others. One lasted for several hours and got to observe it real well. Although these seemed to be supernatural and spookie as hell they did not seem to be evil. I also witnessed others who had apparently seen something unexplained for each time they were very scared. I believe, because of my own experience, that the home definetly has supernatural qualities within it.

I went to the Hanna House a few years ago for Halloween. I thought it was pretty pointless. In my opinion, it was really just money wasted. It was interesting hearing the stories that people have “experienced,” but I never saw, heard, or felt anything. I believe in spirits and was somewhat saddened by the fact that I didn’t see anything. They also had a haunted house attraction type thing set up outside. You went in through the basement and ended up outside by the street. As far as I’m concerned, don’t waste your money.

I have read many of the comments and I am glad someone stated that Mr. Hannah was not a German Immigrant. Now I have done an over-night stay there with a couple of friends and have experienced some interesting things. Now I am a very skeptical person when it comes to paranormal activity but I must say since that night I have now changed my view on paranormal instances.

The night started off fine, everyone went into their small groups and into different rooms and levels of the house. The house felt a little eerie to begin with but after a while you can get quite comfortable there. The couple of things that had really caught my attention and stuck out of the evening were on the second level of the house, the basement and even the medium that came in.

While I was on the second level of the house I was in what was considered the Grandmothers room or the room where the German immigrant gave birth to a still born. It was said that the room had either smelt of roses or death at different times of the day/night. While we were in there is smelt beautifully of a garden (which if you are like me, you know that achieving that scent isn’t a hard feat since there are many floral sprays you can buy). My group and I had left the room and hung out in the hallway, facing the stairs we had seen no one else enter the room after us (we were the last one’s to have been in the room), so we decided to go back in. We all first noticed when walking into the room that the ambiance changed. Although we were in there only moments ago it went from feeling very comforting and floral scented to a very disturbing air with a horrible stench. Now I can not say that it smelt of rotten flesh because I do not know what that particular scent smells like, but the smell was definitely something rotten. We then noticed that the sheets were thrown to the side as if something restless was just laying in the bed.

Many people had experiences in the basement, although I did not, I did have a large sense of an uneasy, sad and depressing feelings surrounding me. We then headed into the attic when the medium had arrived, the gentleman was very nice and talking with many people who had questions wanting to be answered. Now I absolutely hate psychics and mediums and other people who claim they can read your future or talk to the dead. I find them to be the most revolting people on this earth because they mess with peoples feelings in such ways and knows it affects them because it is on an emotional basis and they just reiterate information that they have already attained through the person they are talking to. Well my friends that I was with that night were very big believers and one really wanted to talk to him. She was in tears and emotional and I was just livid because she let her emotions get in the way of realizing that she had fed him most of the information. They then pushed me to talk to him, which I did not want to do, but my friends were so pushy so I went up to the gentleman to “talk” with him. Without me saying a word he made eye contact with me and said he had a special message for me from my brother Michael (my brother who had been dead for 21 years), this took me off guard because I had not said a word to him or to anybody around me, my friends did not even know I had a brother or of his existence. He then proceeded to tell me a personal message, which only someone extremely close to me would have known those events in my life, things that even my family did not know. I could not even begin to express how random, odd and intense this moment was.

I know this comment is extremely long but I love to share my experiences with people.

I have been to the Hannah House a few times. The last time I was Indiana Ghost Hunters were providing tours of the house….Yes there was a fire in the tunnels under the house which were in fact part of the Underground Railroad. However I never heard any screams and there are NO red walls. A woman did die in one of the upstairs bedrooms but there is no smell of rotting flesh! There is a distinct smell that has been noticed at the bottom of the steps leading to the upstairs bedrooms it is a pleasant smell of ROSES! And I did indeed smell the roses at the foot of the stairs. The house and its large property are very beautiful and the stories of the Hannah House are very interesting. There is a very rare painting that hangs in the first room to the left as you enter through the front of the house, I believe it is a painting of the original owner of the home anyway the painting is in no way paranormal just freaky because it seems as though the man in the paintings eyes follow you across the room as you walk!!! So if you like to tour Historical homes and land this is a GREAT place to visit. If you are looking for “Bloody Walls” etc…watch Amittyville!!!!!

Me and my family go every year since i was little around halloween, i never really thought of it as haunted until last year, me and my step sister were kinda dragging behind the group taking pictures of the rooms, when we left we begun to look at the pics, up stairs in the red room we had taking a pic on our phone and in the picture there was a real vivid white shadow laying in the bed, and in the picture beside the bed there was a evil almost distorted face looking down on the shadow, we took it back to the people working there and they too were shocked by it, the let us go back up and look at the picture above the bed and it was a scenery picture. that picture is wicked and honestly made me believe in ghost, the Hannah house is deff haunted

The $750 minimum for private investigations is pretty steep for an unproven venue. I wonder why any real teams bother. That’s on the level of Waverly Hills and Ohio Reformatory and they are the big leagues. Even Prospect Place doesn’t charge that much. I think I’d rather go there. Guaranteed results for my money.
