Real Haunted House

Hart Cemetery

Konawa, Oklahoma

This cemetery is said to be guard be a set of “demon horses.” These horses allegedly walk on air and have eyes of fire. In the rear portion of the cemetery is an old school house that dates back to the nineteenth century. Legend has it that the all the pupils of the school were killed in a horrible bus accident. It is said that at night one may hear children playing and talking, though nothing is there.

Ok you guys need to read the article again. It says the school was built back in the 19th century. Didn’t say the kids that were killed were living in the 19th century.

I haven’t been to the Hart Cemetery, but I’ve been to the Violet Springs Cemetery and Sacred Heart. Violet Springs is the one that has the “murdered by human wolves” headstone. There are two parts to it — one is smaller and most of the graves there are for children, it seems. My friends and I went looking for the headstone there and couldn’t find it, so we think it must be in the bigger part across the street (it was too cold to continue searching). I’ve been out there at night and I did see a weird flash of red in front of us. There was no way a red light from our car could have caused it because, of course, the brake light is in the back of the car. That was weird.

Sacred Heart is really beautiful. I don’t know about haunted, but it’s really neat and has kind of a peaceful feeling to it. The first time we went out there we did get stuck in a huge ditch right outside the gates of the mission — look to the left of the gate when you’re facing the trail in and you’ll see the ditch our car fell into. I don’t think it was ghosts; I think it was just bad luck.

I believe this is the real story:

Sacred Heart Cemetery is located east of Asher and west of Konawa. From the intersection of Hwy. 177 and Hwy. 39, go east on Hwy. 39 for seven miles. At NS-348, turn left and go north almost one mile. Turn left (west) and the cemetery is on the south side of the road.

The Cherokee Indians provided the land and work on the construction of the Sacred Heart Monastery, next to the cemetery, was finished in 1877, which included a bakery, a two-story housing building and novitiate as well as a school for Indian boys and a farm. Sacred Heart Monastery for many years was the center of Catholicism in the state. Through out the years the Monastery housed civil war soldiers, the homeless, and many Indian children. On the night of January 15, 1901, came the disaster from which Sacred Heart never recovered. On that cold stormy night a fire broke out in the dining room of the Indian Boys School and swept out of control. Before it was over the blaze had taken the monastery, boys’ school, college, girls’ school, convent, and the church along with many priests, nuns, and children. They were all gone within a few hours, the light from the fire could be seen from over 50 miles away. The entire mission was destroyed with the exception of a few small buildings. The bakery and the two-story log cabin are the only buildings that remain today.

There are many legends in the area, stemming from this horrible accident. One involves several flashing blue lights that circle the cemetary at night. These lights are thought to be the souls of the priests searching for any remaining children to insure that their souls go to heaven. There is a mist that regulary travels across the old school grounds. Some say that the mist is death, returning again and again to capture more souls. Several people have seen an image of an old lady who walks the night. She is not dressed in a nun’s habit, but many believe that she is Sister Agnes who died in the fire and who protects the grounds from the evil mist. Whispers can be heard in a woman’s voice saying “Get out of here!” which may be Agnes warning people of the dangers of the area.

Human forms are not the only entities that roam the cemetary. There is a pair of demon horses that can be heard galloping across the night, whinning in pain. Several animals, including horses died in the terrible fire. Blurs of white can be seen from the corner of the eye, folks say, that could be the farm’s hundred white rabbits that were englufed in the flames. All of these things have only been witnessed at night. However, there is one thing that can be seen during the day, and is very real.

There is a very unusual tombstone for Katherine Cross who was born March 13, 1899 and murdered on October 10, 1917.

If you look at the inscription, you would assume that she was attacked and killed by werewolves, for its says “murdered by human wolves”. However, it wasn’t something mystical and other-worldly that murdered her it was a “criminal operation” performed by Dr. A H Yates. Dr Yates didn’t work alone for a local schoolteacher, Fredrick O’Neal was charged alongside him for the murder of another young girl, Elise Stone.

Little is known about the “criminal operation” and some assume that it was an abortion gone wrong. Others speculate that, as a school teacher who had the trust of his students. Frederick ONeal lured these young women into unsavory activities with other members of a secret club and that the only outcome for Katherine and Elise would be death.

Whether you believe in any of this story is up to you. But, you have directions to the cemetery. Take a look for yourself.

The story that I heard was as follows: This cemetery is in the heart of a mission. That later became Sacred Hearts and then St. Gregory’s in Shawnee. I have been there and seen the cross. It is said that this cemetery is haunted by a werewolf or some other animal. And, that if you stay in the cemetery overnight, at the cross, you will not make it out alive. I was there as a kid. The creepiest thing is the walk in. You have to travel in through a grove of interlocking trees. It is a tunnel of foliage over the path. Check out John Morris’ Ghost Towns of Oklahoma for some good pics.

I went to this area yesterday! It is Beautiful there. Behind the church, off in the woods, there are 2 cemeteries, a bakery and a cabin. Almost everything burned to the ground around 1901. Many children were killed in the fire. The cemeteries that are behind the church belong to the Priests and nuns of the mission. I took several photos while I was there yesterday. I have one that has an unexplainable blue mist. But the cemetery was peaceful and calming. I didn’t see any wild animals there. Just some dragonflies from the spring just past the cabin.

I have been to Hart cemetery at night and in the day. Trust me guys there are no demon horses, I didn’t even see any thing weird. We searched all over in the woods an never found the school. I took several pictures, an no ghosts. I have also been to sacred heart, an although it was very pretty, still no ghosts. Just a bunch of stories to scare high school kids.if anyone knows if the school is still around Hart cemetery, please post a comment.

I’ve been there. I’ll never to Back. There aren’t horses. But there are ghosts. By far the scariest thing I’ve ever seen. One of my buddies thought he’d be tough and spend the night there. The next morning he was staring at the tree and pale. He was talking in some weird language I couldn’t understand. And acted like I wasn’t even there. It was weird. So. If I were you guys, go there, but don’t spend the night

We used to go out to that place all the time. almost impossible now due to the patrol that sets at the church. the things i have seen in this place i am too embarrassed to mention but it was not of a natural nature. the headstone that reads killed by human wolves has to do with a doctor that practiced abortions and he mutilated that girl all to hell. The original residence of sacred hart are the people who founded shawnee and st. gregs university. scary scary place that i always awful stories about.

My home away from home was less than a quarter of a mile from sacred hart, I have spent many late evenings, and even a couple of nights in the old bell tower. There are definitely ghosts, but nothing as urban as “demon horses”, that is quite simply bull****. I have seen a young nun carrying a child from the woods behind the orphanage, if it wasn’t for the feeling of ice dripping down my spine, and my hair crawling off of my head i probably would have rationalized it . I have heard what seems to be the cries of young kids, and walked through very frigid and unsettling spots near the old cemetery , and especially the one for children. I would be more correct to say that you can defiantly FEEL the history of the place, when you start feeling emotions that you know dont belong to you , you are probably close to an area where something tragic took place.

sacred heart is a crazy place to go check out and every time i went out there ive heard stuff but never seen anything but the ground is always soggy and soft if u havent noticed, but anyway me and some friends went out there one night and we were standing by the gate it was pitch black didnt wanna walk inside at night not a good thing to do on a sacred ground but me and him was standing there and something big runnin straight down the path, i know theres cows out there but this was heavier than a heffer runnin towards us i ran and it felt like i was runnin on air and tripped and fell as if i was pushed and while runnin there were branches snapping from every direction, so we left from there pretty fast it sent a chill up my spine to hear something that big comin toward me and i have seen the old cop who played a trick on us and come to find out it wasnt a cop it was a spirit who directed us into a dead street we followed him and when we came to the turn and he just disappeard it was weird but a creepy not and the kid cemetery is a trip to look at and unmarked graves i like the place to take people to to get scared.

A couple of my friends and I were drinking and smoking and we all decided to go out to Sacred Hearts and we heard sounded like two horses on the other side of the trees in the pasture while walking down the gravel road (we parked a little ways up the street from the gate, also we didn’t know anything about this place we just heard it was haunted)we got closer to the trees cause we wanted to see the horses we realized there wasn’t a fence or anything between the road and where it sounded like the horses were just trees as we got closer I felt it seemed like a horse puffed air on me so it freaked me out,the whole time we were walking up this gravel road we heard the horses pacing back and forth,We went throw the gate very beautiful sighting there’s a little pond and beautiful trees,we went to the child’s cemetery and into the fields that are by it got back on the original trail, there is two buildings in the back of the property,The one that is on your right walking in you can go threw the back door(Basement)there is stuff written on the walls there were two beer bottles in the Basement, instead of turning around like your suppose to after the buildings we went threw the gate there is lots of acres out there we heard lots of noises walking threw that trail,I think there is actually animals out there(there was animal droppings)we walked that trail for about 30 mins to an hour and ran into little shed like buildings made out of bricks looked like they were newish, the buildings had things written in them it was weird and then we kept walking and there were many crosses and large rock and we kept on walking and there was like a big hole (pond like)and a trail down the middle of it to an island the trail had vines going up over it like a cave begging us to walk in it,so we did it was dark and scary,we walked until we got to where the one trail ends up splitting into like 6 different trails it looked like a maze or something we were scared we were going to get lost so we turned back around,We went back to the truck and drove up the road there is a Sacred Heart Cemetery we thought it looked scary so we stopped at it and went in there,We went to the very back where it was really dark and started looking at the stones and reading them there was the stone that said eaten by human wolves,The grave looked like it had been dug at by giant pals and there was a pile of loose dirt by it and we saw the top of a plastic (tuba wear) Box so we thought it was weird we looked at each other and we all decided that we should look in it so we lifted up the corner of the lid(shut it quickly) I thought I saw a bunch of soaked rats moving around in the box everyone saw the same thing we were like this is weird so we decided to look again and it looked like dead rats but we got a light and looked and it wasn’t rats we think its a dead body in a plastic box(it didn’t stink),we just stood there looking at each other for a second like weirded out and quiet we all looked around at the exact same time I felt someone watching us and we heard alot of noise like someone fell in the bushes and one of us yelled RUNNN!!!!!!!!! the fastest we have ever ran in our lives and we left……

ive lived in konawa my entire life and never heard this story… a few that i have heard is that the nuns that lived on the mission would get pregnant and drown them in the creek near there to keep it a secret. i have also heard of phantom lights being seen up and down the road near there by alot of people.

Jeanette says:

November 8, 2012, 2:09 pm

I think this is supposed to be Sacred Heart Cemetary located west of Konawa. A story was published in Readers Digest magazine years ago about a grave which had a headstone that read “Killed by Human Wolves”. Most people took that to mean werewolves. Come to find out, the grave wasn’t actually in the Sacred Heart Cemetary, but in a small cemetary down the road from it. The girl the grave blongs to died due to a botched abortion, and that’s why it reads Human Wolves.

David Swarb says:

30+ years ago I was in several groups that drove out to Sacred Heart Mission from ECU in Ada. There was one night in particular that we found smoldering fires in the framing structure of the hay barn near the old cemetery.
Sure, it’s creepy out there but we never saw or experienced anything ghostly, supernatural, demonic or devil worshippers.
I was out there a couple of times in daylight and it’s still kinda creepy.
Looking @ google maps recently I can see that is has changed dramatically. The hay barn is no longer there (but the foundation footing remains), they have installed small rock walls on either side of the new gate to the old mission, and several buildings have been added to the church grounds up front on the “main” road.

But i also ran into a huge cement figure.

So we decided to check this place out. And as a nonbeliever I went in thinking nothing of it. As we stood beside the old house and looked at this old tree that was completely dead and wondered how that was since everything else was well bloomed. I started getting an overwhelming sense that we should leave. It was me, my daughter and 3 other friends. We started to walk near the graveyard and we heard the most blood curdling scream I’ve ever heard in my life. We got the hell out of there as fast as we could and I can swear I keep hearing growling by something as we were running out of there. Needless to say I will never go back there. I never in my 28 years have seen or heard anything that made me that scared.

Does anyone believe in the sacredness of believing in leaving once a person dies let their souls go be with GOD? Is it not you who also revisits these graves for memory purposes because I promise the souls are no longer there… Or are you Nonbelievers? I am NOT getting in a Spiritual debate of Christianity at ALL but I seem to be able to read back into at LEAST 15names that left comments and I KNOW SEVERAL of you that have had loved ones pass on either gracefully or sadly tragically… For the ones tragically is it not you begging GOD for answers and is it not you to give them peace and is it not you that HE let their Spirits enter into the KINGDOM?
Then why in the HELL do you want to give Santan or his followers the satisfaction of playing mind games?
We ALL went to school, we ALL took some sort of history, yet you seem to either play stupid or ARE ztupid, because your using the world wide web to post ignornant comments!
