Haunted Skating Rink

St. Cloud, Minnesota

Before this skating rink was built in the 1970’s in a swamp, locals begged for it not to be built, as the area had sentimental value. The builder dismissed their claims and built anyway. Later, it was learned that in the early 1900’s, a young boy, Gilbert, lived in the area. Despite his mother’s warnings not to venture too close to the swamp, Gilbert was found by his father one day lying face down in the water. It is supposed that Gilbert’s ghost is responsible for many hauntings which include tampering with DJ equipment and turning on and off water faucets and lights.

I was born in 1972 in St Cloud Minnesota less than a mile across country from The Skatin Place and I have NEVER heard this story until today. You would think that with living that close and spending that much time there that I would have heard something. In asking my friends that also have lived here all their lives and they too know nothing of this story. So I really have to question the validity of this story.

It is Skatin Place. Also you may not want to miss the Strange St. Cloud Conference this weekend.

I grew up in a town 10 miles north of St. Cloud, and spent much of my preteen years frequenting the Skatin Place, and also going there for the Dance Club they held there on the weekends when I was a teenager. I have never heard of this story. Would be cool if it were true, but you would think if it were, the locals would know about it.

I live near the skatin place, about 3 miles away, and i have heard this story. My 5th grade teacher owns the skating place and she told us this story one day in class, she said the ecxact same things this passage says. Also my school used to have a parties there and one time me and my friends were sitting at a table and everything kinda fell off our table. Its very weird.

Okay I’ve never been there or anything but I live close to St. Cloud and I never heard this. Well I only came to this cuz I just saw the movie 1408 and the guy said one of the scariest places hes been to was something in St. cloud. So now I’m looking on google for anything. If any of you know what he was talking about can you comment back?

Laura Guertin says:

July 8, 2007, 2:51 am

Yeah, I’m actually watching 1408 right now. I’m from St. Cloud, Minnesota and I’ve heard stories about the Skatin’ Place being haunted by a little boy who drowned. I have been there several times, but nothing has ever happened while I was there. I’m very interested in things like this… I was also trying to find what he was saying in the movie about St. Cloud MN too.

I grew up right down the street from the skatin place and I hung out there a lot as a kid. I can’t say that I ever experienced anything there but I have heard this story before. I can say that my house was very close to this and MY house was very haunted. I don’t know why because my dad built the house but I can confirm that the area is definitly haunted. At least my neighborhood was.

I also just watched the movie 1408 and have been trying to find info on the reference he made to saint cloud. but the only thing I’ve found is this story so if any of you do find out where he was talking about let me know.

Hailey says:

November 4, 2007, 12:38 pm

the reference in 1408 could also be referring to the st. cloud in Florida. Who knows, there’s more than just the two st. cloud’s in the US.

Hailey says:

November 4, 2007, 5:16 pm

excuse my previous comment, my brother told me the reference was to st cloud minnesota. He said it might be a well that a woman dropped her baby down, in st cloud. He says people still here the baby crying. I don’t remember when he said it was.

I’ve been to the Skatin’ Place many, many times and I’ve never had anything strange happen to me nor have I heard about anything strange happening to other people. The only weird thing that ever happened is when I was in the eighth grade and one of my friends said an elderly man tried to follow her into the bathroom.

lyn says:

There were two other roller rinks before Skatin’ Place came to be! One was in waite park the other in sartell. I have not heard of any ghost stories about skatin place and i am in my 40’s. Waite park is known for it’s swampy areas!! I would say the reference in the movie was made up

I have lived in st cloud all my life, I am native american and I can sense a lot of spirits. I never knew about this story and i used to hang around there a lot when i was younger, almost every day id go skating around. I’ve always had weird feelings about the place, The drinking fountains are always running, i don’t know if that relates to it, but the people have tried to fix it, but it stays the same. Now that i hear about this I believe its very true, I once had to go to the bathroom, I opened the stall and there was a boy without rollerblades on, I said sorry and closed it fast. I went to the next stall and i looked under to see if her was there, after I was done I looked back in and no one was there. While washing my hands I saw an old man in old clothes walking behind me, I thought it was a guy that works there, I looked and he wasn’t there. I haven’t been there in years but I’m definantly gunna re-visit it soon.

Chloe says:

March 29, 2008, 8:06 pm

I’ve gone to the skatin’ place many, many, many times. I’ve never had anything happen to me, but I’ve asked some people that worked there about the hauntings one time, and they told me about the ghost playing ghost busters on the DJ, and lights flashing on and off, and something about the girls bathroom stall ( i can’t quite remember, it was a year ago)

May 15, 2008, 8:34 pm

I too am from St. Cloud, MN. I lived right down the road from the skatin’ place, and used to go there ALL the time, loved roller skating. NEVER once have I heard this story. I too was born in 1972 in St. Cloud, MN.

I am also very interested in what the guy mentioned in the 1408 movie. Now that story, I did think I recalled hearing something about, but not sure.

I definitly never did hear the skatin’place story though.

I also heard stories about the municipal pool being haunted growing up, but also went there all the time and never experienced anything, except one time a kid got hit by a car crossing the street from there going towards the Tech Highschool football field, when I was there. That happened like 28 years ago or so.

shorty says:

June 14, 2008, 4:54 pm

Let me help, in the movie 1408 he reffered to St.Cloud, MN not anywhere else however he was referring to a civil war widow who threw her baby down a well, I have been trying to figure out where and if it’s true through archives in St.Cloud.
I grew up in St.Cloud like most of who responded, and have also been to the Skating Place and back in the day thats what it was called, and yes it was built in a swampy area, everyone is entitled to what they want to believe if you aren’t curious or thought something why did you comment after watching the movie? This story is posted in more place than this and I think it’s cool to have been in a place thats been noted to being haunted and many strange things have happened there while I was there skating and the dance thing they had Fri and Sat nights as I won many dance competitions there so it ain’t bs! To get things straight!

I lived in St. Cloud from age 3-8, moving to AZ in 1985. I moved back to St.Cloud for college in 1999. I remember both times hearing about the Skatin Place being haunted, but I was only there once when I was a kid. I didn’t see anything but the night I was there, everyone started panicing. Some girl said she saw a ghost, and then there was a big bang. Never knew what it was but alot of kids flew out of there-some with their skates still on.
I also recall hearing about St.Cloud State being haunted-Shoemaker Hall? I was there in 2000 and we heard alot of sounds. We all heard someone scream and just thought it was someone down the hall. Found out later about the lady that died there. I think there are 3 dorms that are haunted though. and there was (when I was there) a hall that even the professors thought was haunted. It was deemed uninhabitable but as of 2003 they hadn’t torn it down yet.

I had heard of a story that the skating place could be haunted yrs ago. I sorta belive it. I can sense spirts from time to time. The hand full of times that I went for parties and what not I always got the feeling that I shouldn’t be there. Like there was someone there that no one could see. There were several times that I would seen dark shadow at the back of the place, by the dj equipment.

My Mom use to own a old farm house close to St. Cloud in a town called Clearwater. A family was murdered there and she believed it was haunted. Alot of strange things happened while she lived there. In a photo taken the day she moved in,there were 2 men standing behind the children she had no idea who the men were!!! She never saw them until the photo was developed. Another time, it was a winter evening and it was snowing, she and a friend were watching TV in the living room and heard a car drive up the driveway someone get out shut the door and walk up the stairs and nock on the door. When she opened the door noone was there and no car in the drive way!!! shortly after she sold the house it burned down. The murder of the family was resently featured on Cold Case on A & E.

Add me to the list of former St. Cloud residents who used to frequent the Skatin’ Place, who’ve never heard this story until finding it here. I’m old enough that I remember the opening of the Skatin’ Place. I went there the first time within the first week. The only thing scary about that place was the a**hole who sold tickets at the door. I was not a great skater, but loved the cool, state-of-the-art games they had, like airhockey and Asteroids.

Erik D. Schmid says:

December 27, 2008, 12:33 am

I used to frequent the Skatin’ Place for many years and yes, this story has been around for quite a long time. The owners of the rink prior to John and Sue owning it apparently had two pictures of the boy. One with him standing on the roof of the building and one of him skating. If you are from the area and have spent a good deal of time there you would have heard this story.

stumps me how, united States has higher education, but yet people don’t even know our English language. And by the way, “ghosts do inhabit our planet”. Seeing, feeling, hearing is believing. So get your skeptic heads out of your !#*!#**!

Cheri says:

I worked at the Skatin’ Place during the 1980’s while in high school and college. I have first hand experience with the Skatin’ Place Ghost. One day arriving to do some after-hours cleaning, I discovered the water running in the women’s restroom. Having been the MOD on duty the previous evening who closed and in particular, the individual who cleaned the restrooms, I know the water was turned off. No one had been in the building since I left. I shut the water off feeling a bit uneasy but determined to do what I was there to do. To try and soothe my nerves, I stuck an album on one of the turntables in the DJ booth and then began vacuuming. Ten or so minutes later, something with the music seemed odd so I turned the vacuum off and discovered the album skipping. Granted, this was probably unrelated to the ghost, but already on edge from the water incident, I was greatly spooked. I left a note for my boss in the office telling her to call me when she got in and stated that I would return when she arrived but that I would never again work in the building alone.

rachel rose says:

I went to the Skating Place for the first time a year ago, and I went into the bathroom and Gilbert turned on the water and off again. I quickly opened up my stall to see if anyone was in there. I ran on over to my husband to ask him what kinds of things this ghost of the skating place does, and he told me about how he plays with the water. I also lived in Shoemaker hall, one semester, my friend said that the lights would go on and off sometimes (only on her side of the dorm room) and as the story goes there once was a girl who committed suicide because she was impregnated (by a housekeeper i think?) Also, my professor and one of my friends would tell stories of how you could footsteps of a woman in heels in Riverview and she would go around and slam the doors.

Yes there is a place in St. Cloud called the Skatin’ Place. I have been going there since the 70’s when I was a little girl (yes, I am old) but I have never heard anything about it being haunted our experienced it. I was there constantly (2-3 days per week) for about 3 years as a teen, you think I would have heard or experienced something, but then again, if your not paying attention or looking for it, you would never think a faucet not turning off would be weird, just broken.

SartellGuy says:

I used to go there on field trips in my elementary years. The water fountains always ran, which I thought was odd, and I could just feel this odd presence in there. And I was working DJ and all of a sudden the light flickered on and off and on and off and on.
