Real Haunted House

Haunted Skating Rink

St. Cloud, Minnesota

Before this skating rink was built in the 1970’s in a swamp, locals begged for it not to be built, as the area had sentimental value. The builder dismissed their claims and built anyway. Later, it was learned that in the early 1900’s, a young boy, Gilbert, lived in the area. Despite his mother’s warnings not to venture too close to the swamp, Gilbert was found by his father one day lying face down in the water. It is supposed that Gilbert’s ghost is responsible for many hauntings which include tampering with DJ equipment and turning on and off water faucets and lights.

I worked at the Skatin’ Place during the 1980’s while in high school and college. I have first hand experience with the Skatin’ Place Ghost. One day arriving to do some after-hours cleaning, I discovered the water running in the women’s restroom. Having been the MOD on duty the previous evening who closed and in particular, the individual who cleaned the restrooms, I know the water was turned off. No one had been in the building since I left. I shut the water off feeling a bit uneasy but determined to do what I was there to do. To try and soothe my nerves, I stuck an album on one of the turntables in the DJ booth and then began vacuuming. Ten or so minutes later, something with the music seemed odd so I turned the vacuum off and discovered the album skipping. Granted, this was probably unrelated to the ghost, but already on edge from the water incident, I was greatly spooked. I left a note for my boss in the office telling her to call me when she got in and stated that I would return when she arrived but that I would never again work in the building alone.

I went to the Skating Place for the first time a year ago, and I went into the bathroom and Gilbert turned on the water and off again. I quickly opened up my stall to see if anyone was in there. I ran on over to my husband to ask him what kinds of things this ghost of the skating place does, and he told me about how he plays with the water. I also lived in Shoemaker hall, one semester, my friend said that the lights would go on and off sometimes (only on her side of the dorm room) and as the story goes there once was a girl who committed suicide because she was impregnated (by a housekeeper i think?) Also, my professor and one of my friends would tell stories of how you could footsteps of a woman in heels in Riverview and she would go around and slam the doors.
