I not only currently live in Hemphill House but I also own it, and I and most of my grandchilderen and seen them. John Hemphill’s head stone was under the front porch when we moved in. If you are the only one home and in the basement you often will hear footsteps coming from up stairs. We often hear musice in the middle of the knight. Also if my wife does not put up her hair when we go to bed one of them play’s with her hair. The X sheriff was corrict, there is no Hemphill Road, it is actualy on Township Road 180. Haggie was also corrict, the pig form down the road does stink if the wind is blowing the wrong way.

I’ve lived around here a good part of my life and don’t recall ever hearing about this. Doesn’t mean that I don’t believe it. I can tell you that roads in Hardin County used to have names attached to them although I can find no reference of this road name. The road would be TR 180 just north of Roundhead. On some geneology sites, the DO list a Hemphill cemetary at this location with an address of 867. Ariel maps do show what appears to be a cemetery at this location. I have also seen a post on a geneology website about H. Hemphill gravesite under front porch form previous reesident.

I live in Roundhead, Ohio. The place has more dead people in it than live people due to the double cemetaries. It also has an Indian Burial Ground nearby.I have heard other stories about Roundhead. People have been in the cemetary at night and have seen blue and green flashes of light that goes on nightly. I myself live in a house that is rumored to be haunted by all of the locals here. We did not know that when we bought it but it has proved right so far. We are not extremely paranoid people or true believers until living here. If you read about the history of Roundhead, it has a rich beginning. So I would say some of the stories are true around here.

These Hemphilla are probably distant cousins of mine. I am currently trying to figure out who they were. I would like to know what the man did with the tombstone of John Hemphill. And does that man realize that he can get reduced taxes because he owns a historic site/ property with a cemetery on it, but he must care for any tombstones he finds.

Genealogy is fun. This is to let everyone know that I have a friend searching the records to find out exactly what Hemphills owned this property and when. As a probable cousin, it will be nice for me to have my kinfolk properly memorialized. I am sure God would approve too. And whatever you believe, maybe the ghosts will be happy too, when they are properly recognized as important to the rest of us.

Anyway, back to a discussion about the house. There was a John Hemphill in the family, who was born on 1802. It appears was living in Hardin County in 1880 at age 77. He was a carpenter. Thus, it is possible that his tombstone could be the one found by our home owner. We are hoping the owner still has the tombstone, and one wonders if John was the peron who built this house. I believe his wife’s name was Mary. ” Will have to look that up again.

One actual tombstone has been found, and it just says “Hemphill”. No first name. The home owner did report that he thinks there is someone buried under the kitchen. I have written him a letter to find out why he thinks that. Can he see maybe another tombstone under there? Who knows? Maybe someone got bumped off? This is all a fascinating story, and I wonder how many other people might be buried in the area. Could the house have been built on top of a cemetery? The name “Hemphill Cemetery” sounds like mostly a family cemetery, but maybe there were some others too. We just don’t know. Maybe they should have an college anthropology group come do some excavations.
And don’t forget to look at the Roundhead cemetery and see the former Hemphill home owners there.

I suggest you talk to some of the people in your area, who make tombstones.
You might figure out which company made tombstones with that design, etc. That may help you figure out how old the tombstone is. Some of those companies even keep records, and some funeral places keep the old records too, kept by the previous owners. They might tell you who the tombstone was made for. Burial permits have been required since about the year 1900 too, and the burial permits are another source of information. Since the Hemphills first owned the place in 1901, the tombstone probably comes from some time after 1901. That really is not all that long ago, when it comes to genealogical research. Burial permits may be kept at your local courthouse.
Tell us why you think someone is buried underneath your kitchen. Is there another tombstone under there or what? Also, have you found any pieces of tombstones elsewhere on your property?
And, have you been to roundhead cemetery? Are the Hemphill tombstones there designed similarly to the one on your property?

So, are we to assume you have no church now? Or are you just not telling us which one it is? Did you ever go to college and study the Bible there? Or is your church one of those that you designed yourself?

this is very TRUE!!! it is on twp rd 180 in roundhead ohio, a little house out in the middle of nowhere. My best friend (the Kooglers) grew up there and some very creepy things happened when i went to visit him. Im sure that most of you have read Trenton’s comments, and i can tell you that I seen first hand… the lights turn on and off, things fly off the wall and hearing a mans voice saying GET OUT! If thats not scary enough the in the upstairs closet was a picture of christ and ocasionaly demonic images would be drawn across his face. i only ever seen one head stone tho located right under the front porch it is very real and very scary!!

THE LATEST – Hi, Gang- I heard from the home owner. He has owned the home for five years, and the “ghosts” have always been friendly to him and his family, and they especially like to be active when the family all gets together, according to his statments. The owner also reported that he also thinks his house may have been built on top of an old cemetery, and maybe all but two people were moved to another locality. There is one Hemphill tombstone known to be at the property currently. It’s in two pieces. One part of it, the top part, can be seen at the Hemphill Cemetery on the free Find A Grave web site. The bottom half of the tombstone remains buried under the front porch of the house at that location. The home owner has been told that a second person is buried beneath the kitchen, but he has not tried to confirm that.
The next thing that is needed is to verify that there is actually someone buried underneath the front porch, where the base of the Hemphill tombstone still is buried.
What still remains is to try to figure out which Hemphill might be buried at this location, and who actually made the Hemphill tombstone, which has been found there.
ADDITIONALLY, a new tidbit of information is that the home might possibly have been a funeral home at some point. There appears to be some equipment in the basement, which may have been used in the preparation of bodies for burial. This lends a whole new slant on things as well. History can be a lot of fun, with new discoveries at every turn. Was someone at this location in the funeral business? Stay tuned for the latest data..

Yes there is a Hemphill Rd. matter of fact it was called that when my parents bought thier first house on Hemphill Rd. Twp. Rd. 180 now, 48 years they have been there. Yes the house is haunted. Yes there is 2 grave markers under the porch. Yes it was told to me that they did prepare the dead in the basement. My parents new the owner who rented the place out. I spent alot of time in that house I know for fact that it is haunted by something. Used to be a pretty popular place back in the 1800′s. Furneral of one of the Hemphills was held in the room on the other side of the small bedroom off the bathroom. The other two rooms and the porch did not exsist at that time. The rooms all have the big arch ways as furneral parlors do. The man in the black suit and top hat has only been seen in the orginal part of the house, and he does come down the stairs early morning to the basement door, the door was always found open when Mr. D (will call him) would get up. The basement door from the outside was not there either that was added later. I heard voices in that house seen MR> HEMPHILL thats what we called him, don’t know for sure if thats who he was could of been the undertaker. Mr. D did some poken around found out alot of information and saw alot….the stories he could tell. Used to be a large barn to the left of the house it had its own drive another barn to the back small one and a garage type building that looked like it housed about 3 cars old style doors the opened not roll up. There was a large apple orchard in the back and some other types of fruit trees. There were large shrubs that surrounded the front old days what they used for privacey. There was a gold fish pond right side of the drive in middle of the yard the got filled in by renters, used to play in that when I was a kid, had no water in it at the time. Different renters tore down buildings cut down the apple trees, place has changed alot. Drove by this morning after work still get a creepy feeling……….

Now we know there are two tombstones under the porch that we should look for, and maybe we should check out to see if there is a funeral home license on filed somewhere, which would tell us more about a funeral home at that location. Maybe you could check your local phone directory and talk to some of the current funeral directors and find out which is the oldest funeral home in that area now. Maybe they know something and could tell us where the licenses for funeral homes are filed and if there is a local funeral home business assoication, etc.

What is the closest college to that area?

Correction: We should check out to see if there is a funeral home license on file somewhere, which would tell us when the funeral home at that location was in operation.
I tried to get a local archaeolological group to help, but their address has changed, and I don’t know what it is now. The local college might help us find an archaeological group, which might help unearth the history of the place.
