I KNOW and work with one of the Koogler ladies that lived at this house! She said the kids one day tried knocking a hole in an upstairs closet wall with hammers so a man could get through. She asked them to draw the man for her. She said she made them do it separately if I remember correctly and they drew the same thing, a stick man with a top hat! She also said one of her children, a baby at the time, would hold its arms out and reach like it was begging something to pick it up, but there was nothing there. Crazy stuff like that. Said her dog would also get angry and would growl and snarl at the air as well. And she also told me her and one of her kids were working in the garden one day when the child pointed out a ghost in the attic window. She said "oh that's just a cloud" and when she looked again moments later it was gone. The Kooglers were the family that experienced the stuff getting thrown around from the closet. She said this was the first violent act that was committed toward them, and didn't occur until they were packing to move. In her frustration she then told them that these entities could NOT follow them to their new house. Fortunately for her they didn't. I will try and have her email you guys so you can confirm it from her. Freaky stuff!

What is the closest town and what is the closest nespaper?
I am manly concerned about when it was a funeral home. The Hemphills last owned the home in 1931. That's when it was transferred to an insurance company or something. It sounds like the "porch" was built after that at some point. We can look at the 1900, 1910 and 1920 and 1930 Census records and see what the various Hemphill owners did for a living. But maybe it was an owner before them, who built the home and was the funeral director.

The two tombstones were there up until Mr. D. moved gosh thats probably been 30 years or so maybe longer. I saw MR. Hemphill when I was 16 and new group of people had moved in and I was baby sitting, Mr. D lived there for years and his children saw man in top hat, Mr. D saw him alot. He never was afraid he just went about his buisness as if the man in the top hat was not there. I never believed it till I saw him, I heard the footsteps everytime I spent the night but always thought it was the boys trying to scare me, but Mr. D. said no it was Mr. Hempill going to the basement. We knew the family before Mr. D. lived there too, mom said they would find things moved around, she doesnt recall them ever saying anything about man in top hat, but those days you didn't talk about things like that your were crazy if you did. I know Tom Fetter owned the house for years and rented it, he passed away I think his son got the house and sold it, may be to the people who are there now. There from Waynesfield area. They might have some info that may help you.

Correction: We should check out to see if there is a funeral home license on file somewhere, which would tell us when the funeral home at that location was in operation.
I tried to get a local archaeolological group to help, but their address has changed, and I don't know what it is now. The local college might help us find an archaeological group, which might help unearth the history of the place.
What is the name of your local newspaper in the area?

Thanks, Wanda, for your comments. Now we know there are two tombstones under the porch that we should look for, and maybe we should check out to see if there is a funeral home license on filed somewhere, which would tell us more about a funeral home at that location. Maybe you could check your local phone directory and talk to some of the current funeral directors and find out which is the oldest funeral home in that area now. Maybe they know something and could tell us where the licenses for funeral homes are filed and if there is a local funeral home business assoication, etc.

What is the closest college to that area?

Yes there is a Hemphill Rd. matter of fact it was called that when my parents bought thier first house on Hemphill Rd. Twp. Rd. 180 now, 48 years they have been there. Yes the house is haunted. Yes there is 2 grave markers under the porch. Yes it was told to me that they did prepare the dead in the basement. My parents new the owner who rented the place out. I spent alot of time in that house I know for fact that it is haunted by something. Used to be a pretty popular place back in the 1800's. Furneral of one of the Hemphills was held in the room on the other side of the small bedroom off the bathroom. The other two rooms and the porch did not exsist at that time. The rooms all have the big arch ways as furneral parlors do. The man in the black suit and top hat has only been seen in the orginal part of the house, and he does come down the stairs early morning to the basement door, the door was always found open when Mr. D (will call him) would get up. The basement door from the outside was not there either that was added later. I heard voices in that house seen MR> HEMPHILL thats what we called him, don't know for sure if thats who he was could of been the undertaker. Mr. D did some poken around found out alot of information and saw alot....the stories he could tell. Used to be a large barn to the left of the house it had its own drive another barn to the back small one and a garage type building that looked like it housed about 3 cars old style doors the opened not roll up. There was a large apple orchard in the back and some other types of fruit trees. There were large shrubs that surrounded the front old days what they used for privacey. There was a gold fish pond right side of the drive in middle of the yard the got filled in by renters, used to play in that when I was a kid, had no water in it at the time. Different renters tore down buildings cut down the apple trees, place has changed alot. Drove by this morning after work still get a creepy feeling..........
