Real Haunted House

Inclined Plane Hiking Trail

Johnstown, Pennsylvania

During the early part of the twentieth century, this trail led to a mine. One day, the mine exploded, killing over one hundred miners. Many have reported seeing miners walking along the path. They disappear quickly, however.

The inclined plane was not built becuase of the mine shafts, it was built because if the Little Conemaugh flooded again they could transport people up to Westmont out of the flood. During the annual AAABA Baseball Tournament, There are people called the Bomb Squad who stay up on the Inclined plane trail, I know a few of the Bombers, They have not seen any miners or a little boy in their four years of service… No ghosts there.

I grew up in Johnstown, and have heard many of these stories. I have never known, or heard of anyone knowing someone who has experienced the Inclined Plane activity. I would like to investigate it myself, but as it is outdoors, that makes it nearly impossible. There are a few, I must assume, houses or buildings in Johnstown that have paranormal activity, but I have yet to be in one. So if you own one of these houses, or know someone who does, please e-mail me at Scout@sgtgrit.com and we will come investigate it.

Good luck, all.

Another life-long resident of the area here and as some have already correctly noted, the Inclined Plane was built after the big flood of 1889 to transport people out of the valley should another devastating flood occur. I’ve never encountered any kind of paranormal activity around Johnstown– except for Grandview Cemetary, where all the Unknown dead from 1889 are buried. Seriously… if there is anyplace for a chance meeting with a ghost, visit this national memorial (but please– be respectful and remember that you are in a cemetary, not an amusement park). The cemetary is very old and is BIG (this is not just a national cemetary but a public one as well). Park your car and walk through the area. It’s eerily quiet and the mausoleums give me chills every time I see them.

Though I have never encountered anything along this trail, there are several spots in the general Johnstown area which are haunted. My personal favorite it Crum Cemetery, in/around Windber, Pa. From Johnstown this is maybe a 30 minute drive. Defintiely a creepy place.

Also, nearby Crum Cemetery is an area dubbed ‘The Dead Zone’. This story is rumored, and I have yet to ever check this place out. But story has it that a man killed his wife and kids, and went to the garage and hung himself. There are several back roads blocked off near Crum Cemetery and I have been told this is back a blocked off road, about a 2 mile hike. I am unsure which road it is unfortunately.

If you want to discuss any ghost hunting experiences, or anything, feel free to contact me via email at: llabeoll@yahoo.com

first of all crum cemetary is in new paris which is in beford county. the distance to it from johnstown is like 30 miles. the inclined plane was also built because of the 1800’s flood, it was a means of evacuating the people of johnstown in case of another flood, however now its just used for tourism there realy isnt a significant purpose anymore. just to further back up other peoples points. crum cemetary was created almost 150 years ago and started out as the crum family cemetary and the dead zone thing aint true the closest thing there would be gravity hill and that is a place where you put your car in neutral and it will drift uphill. think about it people didnt have garages back then that they could go out and hang themselves in cause they didnt have cars in the late 1800’s the closest thing would be an outhouse. that area, which im familiar with because i live in somerset county, is farming and mountain country. yeah its creepy and im sure stuff does happen there but unless your willing to exept that crazy stuff happens you wont have anything happen to you. also keep inmind that cemetaries arent natural places to see ghosts because they’re put to rest there they didnt die there. unlike crum cemetery, at gettysburgh cemetery the people actually died there which makes the place really haunted. i can say i see ghosts cause im sensitive to the spirit world unlike many people who claim they see stuff just to draw attention to themselves. questions comments hntr06pa@aol.com subject line ghosts or it goes to spam

I grew up in Johnstown. It is a very haunted place indeed. I have seen some VERY strange things at both Hinckston Run and Stackhouse Park. Also, I get a very distinct feeling of uneasiness and being watched at North Fork Dam. Does anyone have any info on the history of the one room schoolhouse, Saylor School, or know anything about a haunting at North Fork? I have heard rumors, but nothing solid.

I have lived in Johnstown mostly all my life and i’ve yet to experience any paranormal activity here. Johnstown isnt that bad of a town but its not that haunted either. Im not saying this is true nor false. Im not saying there isnt any paranormal activity her either. But all im saying is that i havent experienced it. But i do hope to!

Some of the people burried in Crum Cemetery are past family members of mine. I personally knew some of them and for the others I’m told they were decent people also. I visit this cemetery as frequent as I can and I have never seen a ghost yet. If anyone does see ghost there, just talk to them and I,m sure you will get quite an education of how life was in those days. Don’t fear the darkness of death but what life itself can do to you.

I could tell you all stories about these things I’ve seen growing up in the hills above Johnstown…and it would show you how haunted the area really is.

My family is from a tiny town called Vintondale, near the Camrbia/Indiana border. During the 1800’s, they moved from their old town to Vintondale. The old town is called Wehrum. It still exists this day.

Take Wehrum Road from 22. Go past the golf course and through Dilltown. Keep going and the road gets narrower as it follows the Blacklick Creek. Eventually, on your left, there will be a large road going up the hill to a place called Lower Laurel Road. Make a left up this hill and drive for 300 yards. Get out of your car. Walk into the woods on the left and you’ll see an abandoned graveyard for the town. It used to have hundreds of residents but now only close to 20 or so headstones remain. I should know…my great great grandfather is up there.

Oh yes, and the town itself. Boarded up in the 1920’s due to a large mine explosion. Close to 50 people were killed in a massive mine explosion. The tippled where the happened is located on the Ebensburg & Blacklick Branch of the Pennsylvania Railroad, one mile west of Vintondale, on the north bank of Blacklick Creek. Close to 30 people were killed there in two seperate explosions. After this happened, the town was sold for scrap and bulldozed. Now the only thing left are foundation holes, the fanhouses, and a small jailhouse.

Well, this comment, is to everyone that doesnt believe any of the ghost stories, i actually live in johnstown in the west end part of town and i was born and raised in this **** hole place…the only thing thats good about this place is that it has alot of history behind it…There is a mine trail thats haunted and if you not from here, then you werent on the trail…and there are mine shafts, the are closed up with cement but there are little ducts on the sides that you can fit in, the inclined plane is not haunted however…the trail is…there is a set of woods beside my house that are haunted…by d st. and norton rd. my house in fact is haunted, my neice who was 6 at the time said that she seen an older woman walking across the porch and me and my mother seen the shadow dissapear right into the wall…My high school is haunted, the high school down the road is haunted, crum cemetary is haunted and so is becky’s grave…and the turn around, i have been to all of these places, because i love to get a good scare, but the scariest place i seen was the turn around!, the best way to ever see anything is just to come out here have a few beers with my friends and i, then we will have a journey to see if yinz see anything, well if you would ever like to contact me, and you have a myspace then drop by and give me a friend request

I just wantd to note that I am from Johnstown,Pa.I’ve lived here all my life (30years) and I honestly havent even heard of the “ghosts” by the inclined plaine. I’m not saying there arent I just haven’t heard of it. But I also wanted to note that someone above said there was no mines, they should look a little better there are mines. The one this story talks of you can see as you cross the bridge by the point stadium. Now it just looks like a big cement wall where the mine opening use to be,Before the exsplosion that did kill I beleive around 100 men. There are also other mines on the opposite hillside witch I am sure of because my father who is 74 years old worked in them with his father as a teenager.

Reading these comments about Johnstown (haunted or not) is very unsettling. I myself was born and raised in Jtown and although I would LIKE to see some activity, I never have. But my main concern is how you people are talking to each other…YES IT IS…NO IT ISN’T…YES IT IS…NO IT ISN’T!!!!! Like I’m right and everyone else is wrong. What the HE**???? Some people may have experienced things and some people may have NOT. that’s not to say that Johnstown doesn’t have it places of interest. People…you’re giving Johnstown a bad name. KNOCK IT OFF ALREADY!!!!!!!!
