Inclined Plane Hiking Trail
During the early part of the twentieth century, this trail led to a mine. One day, the mine exploded, killing over one hundred miners. Many have reported seeing miners walking along the path. They disappear quickly, however.

I grew up in New Ashtola. My family roots there go back several generations. I’ve traversed that mountain by foot, dirt bike and horseback. My ancestors are buried in Crum Cemetary. I’ve heard stories of hauntings and cult activity, but have never witnessed any of it. Beer parties, yes. Cult activity, no. Furthermore, the “Death Zone” story is news to me. As much time as my family (six siblings and large extended family) spent in those woods over the years, surely one of us would have had a personal experience if there was something paranormal out there. Crum Cemetery is an historic place. Please be respectful if you visit. Unfortunately, Gamesa recently cut down a bunch of trees in the area, intending to put up windmills. Personally, if the place does have spooks, I hope they direct their hauntings toward the Spaniards.

I live in Windber, just outside of Johnstown. I also work in Johnstown. I never heard this story before. But there are the popular spots like Becky’s grave that people go to even in the summer time.
I’ll tell you I’ve seen the movie for the Johnstown flood at the museum and that gave me nightmares. I think I really got chills because all those people died right here. It freaks me out sometimes.

I also grew up in Johnstown. I’m familiar with the trail at the top of the Inclined Plane. There most certainly was a mine disaster there- the trail goes right up to the closed-off site of the mine entrance, and there’s a big historic marker that tells the tragic tale. I went there recently with my family and took a few photos, half wondering if we might catch something spooky in the pictures, but nothing unusual showed up, sorry to report.
Johnstown probably should be haunted with all of the tragedy of the floods that took so many lives, but I never heard any stories of hauntings while I lived there, or in the many years after that when I made frequent visits to the folks.

First off I’ve lived in Windber my whole life and Crum Cemetary is a 5 min drive from the center of Windber. Crum is not in bedford county like some people said. In the past two days i’ve visited Crum and the Dead Zone. Both places are definetly freaky and we got some weird pictures and ruled out everything that could have caused them. The Dead zone is not a 2 mile hike, its not even a mile and is not back a blocked off road. The story about the man killing his family and himself is false. I have connections to the family that owns it and it is old farmhouses and nothing mmore. There is also a hunting cabin nearby these houses. As for haunted, you’ll have to personally check these places out for yourself. I know if you go lone your gonna get freaked out easily by the stuff you hear and see.

I would have to say that Johnstown has to be a very haunted place. Crum cemetery must be becoming more popular do to the desecration of the headstones there. I don’t know how people think that’s funny but you wouldn’t believe how many headstones are ruined there. As for haunted im not sure I’ve been there just to sit and watch and nothing has happened however its not to say there isn’t ghosts there. If your from somerset and are looking for this crum cemetery take 30 to 160 north follow thru central city you’ll see a gas station on your left and flashing lights make the first right after that. Follow that road for like 5 or 10 miles till you come to an intersection of three roads make the left and its prolly two miles up the road on the left hand side but please be respectful people still burry loved ones here.

“…Many have reported seeing miners walking along the path. They disappear quickly, however.”
Would that be the ghostly miners doing the disappearing, or those who see them?

I’ve lived in the Windber/Johnstown area all my life. I’ve personally been to Crum Cemetary, Wolfe Trail and several other places. Crum, while freaky, didn’t seem haunted. Its creepy mostly because its back a dirt path and you travel over an old, one-lane bridge. (The Iron Bridge) I did get a somewhat weird feeling when I looked at a section of graves that were all graves of children mostly under the age of 4. Also when there were trees all around it, there was a more isolated feeling to the place, now with the deforestation it’s lost some of that luster.
Remember if you are traveling to see this or any cemetary to be respectful of the graves.

I have lived in johnstown all my life. On yoder st all my life. Im now 27. At the end of my street is woods, if you enter those woods, it starts the trail to the inclined plane. As kids me and my cousins used to walk that trail very often. The trail starts on Yoder st, and goes the wholeway through downtown, under the inclined plane and to brownstown. I dont believe ive ever seen anything paranormal but sometimes we got an eering feeling. Once there was a rabbit stuck to a tree, the head was on one side of the tree and its body on the other side of the tree. I dont believe it was anything due to paranormal activity. We also had an incident where me and my cousin were walking the trail, we had a very weird feeling and thought we heard something so we turned around and starting running back twoard home, after running about 5 min we heard some strange crackling sounds so we stopped and were looking up in the woods to see what it coulda been. after a few minutes of looking we saw a black bird fly from an old tree then out of the blue the tree just fell over directly in front of us. within 20 feet. if the tree were higher it would of landed on us. which i cant say that was to paranormal activity either. However i have had 2 strange encounters at quemahoning dam. it was very late one night and me and 3 friends were sitting in a car off the side of the road getting high. we sat there for a little bit and then up head we saw what looked like 2 red lights coming twoard us and turned into the hillside and disappeared. we thought wed better go just in case it was a cop, so we drove twoard where we saw the lights. there were no other cars around for miles so it couldnt of been a car, because theres not enough room to turn ur car around there. and there was no turn there, and car lights would be white not red. yes maybe we were high, but high or not, theres no way that 4 people could see the exact same thing at the exact same time, unless it was really there. another thing that happened at que was me and a different friend used to drive around the dam all the time, we were all into paranormal stuff and were very into the ouija board. we had the ouija board in the trunk of her car driving around. as soon as her car reached the green bridge, it sounded like something attached itself to her car and we were dragging it. i cant say what it sounded like cause i really dont know but it was like a scraping sound that didnt stop un less we stopped the car. of course we were scared unsure what it was so we were just gonna leave the dam and not stop for nothing. after about 20-30 minutes of driving i knew we were coming up on the 2nd bridge away from the dam, and i said to her wouldnt it be weird if it just like stopped when we reach the 2nd bridge. and sure enough as soon as her car reached the 2nd bridge the noise had stopped. we were no longer dragging what ever we had been dragging under her car, it was a more lighted area so we pulled up a little bit to see if anything was on the road behind us. but there was nothing there. of course we were both too scared to get out of the car. and for this incident we were completly sober. what was it? if anyone has any suggestions please repost.

Hello. I am from the area(Altoona,P.A). When you think about it this area has had a lot of untimly deaths attached to it. From the floods to coal mine disaters. It is a very depressed area with a high rate of suicides. Talk to any Paranormal expert and they will tell you these instinces create a lot of activity. Out of towners who come here say what a sad felling this area gives off. It could be more than economic depression maybe a curse?I have had many paranormal experiences in a varity of places around here.I find it hard to pin point one area .I think there is a lot of activity no matter where you go.There are a lot of sad souls with unfinished bussines around here.

I live in Windber, PA as well. I never really heard of those Johnstown ghost stories but I think they are interesting. And not everyone there has to see something to make it real. I believe some people have seen weird things and some haven’t. With all the disasters that have happened in Johnstown it’s very possible that it’s haunted. I still have yet to see Krum Cemetery, Becky’s Grave, or any of the trails but there’s definitely something in the woods behind my house. One day when I was a young teenager I went into those woods with my brother and friend. They noticed something on the ground. As they were looking at it I looked up and saw a freaking dog sled riding through the woods. There were about 6 or 8 dogs pulling a person riding the sled. Then it just vanished before my brother and friend could see it. Believe me, I know it sounds ridiculous. If I read this story on here I would laugh too. But it’s true. I know what I saw. Wish I didn’t see it. I’ve tried researching it and looking up things about it but can’t find anything. If anyone knows of anything weird in Windber let me know!

This story is very true in my opinion.
I’ve lived in johnstown for most of my life, and me and my friends decided to walk that trail starting in westmont and going downtown.
my friend got pushed down the hill going downtown from westmont, we felt something enter our bodies, we got orbs in pictures, and we saw this one thing looking like a coal miner standing beside a tree.
after that, we decided to take a recording, and when my friend was asking questions we heard something in the recording say clearly “I hear you”.
If I find someway to download the pics and recording I will.
ever since that day its creepy to go down there, but we still do to see what else might happen

When Caitlin looked inside the coal mine through the metal bar there was something wrapped up. It looked like a body. We got so freaked out and went up back the incline. That was a day i’ll never forget.

I grew up in J-town. The mining disaster was the Rolling Mills Mining Disaster. I am including a link to a website that a J-town priest has put together.
Secondly, I personally have witnesses 2 episodes that I consider haunts. The first occurred back in the early 1970, when my grandmother and I were approaching the singing bridge (that connects Cambria City with Minersville). It was about 10:00 at night. As we approached St. Stephens/St. Mary’s to cross the bridge I saw 6 nuns emerge in double file from between the St. Mary’s church and rectory. These were in the old days when nuns wore full habits, and as a school kid, you realized that you could hear them coming a mile away because of the click-clack of the long rosary the wore at their waste. Anyway, these nuns were in white (something I’d never seen nuns wear-all our teachers had the long black habits). They sorta glided across the street to the shrine that was along the river. I’ll never forget the fact that they glided and there was absolutely no sound. I asked my grandma who they were-she grabbed my are, told me to keep quite, and to walk faster. What were they? To this day I wonder.
The second episode involved a house on Broad Street. At different times myself, my sister, and our friend each saw a little girl entering the top bedroom. She was wearing a “granny-type” nightgown. The wierd thing was that our girlfriend saw her first, and it was not until she told us about the little girl she saw in the bathroom that my sister stated she had seen a little girl. All 3 of our descriptions were similar. Was she part of the second big flood (on St. Patricks Day)? The house had belonged to a doctor, so was she a patient that died? We’ve always wondered.

I live in Westmont (suburb of Johnstown), and me and my friends bike on the Incline Trail and in Stackhouse Park almost every day. I have never experienced anything more frightening in Stackhouse than the ranger kicking us out because it was 3 in the morning, or looking down and knowing that I live in the most boring place on the face of the planet. (not for much longer, fortunately!)
And about one of the older comments… You’ve lived in PA all your life, never heard of Johnstown, but have heard of Pithole? That’s odd.

I live about 20 minutes from Johnstown but I grew up throughout Johnstown because alot of my family is from there. I personally haven’t expierenced anything but I love to go and do a little ghosthunting once in awhile. I think that everyone should take a look at the series “Ghosthunters” you can learn a lot from there and things you THINK that you have expierenced and things you HAVE. For another place to explore there is Livermore up a little past Blairsville exit on 22west. The cemetery was actually in the 1st scene of night of the living dead.
