Inclined Plane Hiking Trail

Johnstown, Pennsylvania

During the early part of the twentieth century, this trail led to a mine. One day, the mine exploded, killing over one hundred miners. Many have reported seeing miners walking along the path. They disappear quickly, however.

i ahve lived in Johsntown all my life and its allot more haunted than what people think. I ahve researched the Paranormal for several years now. I can tell you what stories I have heard about Johsntowna dn the surrounding area. I heard of a boy that is seen fulled bodied at a downtown business, the workers see him so ofter he was given a name Tommy or something like that. It coule be the boy that died from black lung, I don’t know. Conemaugh Valley HS my ALma Matter is haunted, lockers slam shut, maintenance workers get tapped on the shoulder. An apparation is seen in the student parking lot and of the football field. Stone bridge from the floods, EVPs have been captured there by Dave and Sharon Oester of of International Ghost Hunters Society. Also at Grandview cemetary. The pink house in Westmont had the ghosts of a little girl and mother there. The girl was always seen by a person in the upper bedroom window, when this lady finally met the woner of the home she said what a lovely daughter you have and the owner said I have no daughters it was the ghost. The trail along the hillside where the Inclined Plane is located is haunted by a couple of miners that died in the big explosion years ago. Like 200 of them died. They say if you walk the trail two of them will come up behind you. The Incline Plane itself I don’t know some say it is while others say it isn’t. Forest Lawn Cemetary, people see a woman in white walking there at night. ALso the surroudning woods are said to be haunted. Becky and Beacky’s grave is true. There is a fram house in Newtown in Conemaugh Twp Cambria County that is haunted. The owners hear footsteps and voices. This case was on a cable TV paranormal program. The Arcadia Threatre in Widnber. Other palces that have to have something going on is City Hall, other older office buildings, Oh yes the Feeder Canal Building is haunted my brother and nephew were working in the basment and they seen ashodws and heard a bunch of things, freaked them out. ALso the steel mills, tradegy happened there to so I’ll bet those buildings or land still has activity going on.

I’ve lived in Johnstown all my life. I’ve obviously heard my share of stories but have never validated any of them. However, I can share a very, very serious story that I received firsthand while at St. Francis College (located about 30min. from Johnstown, in the small town of Loretto.) I was a student there in the mid to late 80′s. My dorm(St. Agnes Hall), had an RN (or RA) whatever they were called, I forget. His name was Brother Stephen Sarah….great guy. One night he got to telling us all about the history of Loretto, and of St. Francis. He conveyed to us a story of an exorcism that had taken place at the College in the 70′s. He remembered the Exorcist’s name, Father Damian Scotto….I’ve looked many times for further information on this but to no avail. He shared information about the Schwab Estate…located across the street from the College (I think it has since changed names). He said that he could take us right now, across the street, into a room where you would immediately get the cold feeling that all is not right. We said thanks….but HECK NO!. He shared with us the existence of a book called Bethany’s Revenge….Yes, I’ve looked but could never find such a title. The book is supposed to contain the history of Loretto and its relation to the demonic. Brother Steve told us about St. Michaels Church in Loretto. I’ve pretty much forgotten all about this over the years….but maybe someone else can shine some light on this further. I came across this site for the first time today….the wife and I have an interest in the paranormal….even been to Connecticut to see the Warrens. Anyhow, just thought i’d share the Loretto story with you folks. Take Care, Ron

As for Crum Cemetary, I’ve only ever heard/experienced one haunting. When me and my brother were little kids (like 4 and 6 yrs old) my parents used to take us camping every year VERY near Crum Cemetery. Well they heard a story that if you go up to the cemetery at night and go on the cemetery road, that a hearse would chase you. Well being the ghost loving family we are, we HAD to try it. I was too you to remember exactly what happened. I remember people freaking out and my mom putting me in the cab of the truck with my dad, and also i remember when we got back to the campsite my mom made us kids go to bed while they sat out by the fire and talked. They sounded really scared and my brothers friend kept saying “it isn’t going to get me!! Ill kill myself! ill do it!” (he did commit suicide many years later).

My mom told me that when we got to the cemetery road we went to turn around and got stuck, she said she turned around and saw lights at the top of the hill. Just then we got unstuck and she looked back again and there was a white hearse RIGHT behind us. The windows were pitch black so u couldnt see it, on ALL the windows. She said it chased us all the way to the end of the road. and when it hit the bottom the lights disappeared and reappeared in an instant at the top of the hill, and continued to come down the hill to the end of the road and repeat itself all night. In the morning it was gone.

I tell her that i dont believe it, but she just laughs and says “i know what i saw, you dont have to believe me, but i KNOW its true!” She wrote a paper about it when she went to college at Allegany College of Maryland in Somerset. Im still not sure if its true, but she sticks by it, and wont let anyone tell her any different!

i once experienced something extremely frightening at the north fork dam.
on one of the back roads there is a “haunted cemetary” taht supposedly witches go do witchcraft at. anyhow, one night my friends and i decided to go out there and find the cemetary…so we found the trail and started walking it when we noticed that in the road ahead of us was black figure. we stopped in our tracks and watched as the figure started to stand…
needless to say we didn’t stay long enough to see what it was but i know i’ll never go back there unless it’s daytime.

Hey Rich Lehman,
becky’s grave is on that street past the galleria, by jari drive (where planet ice & the red cross are), and you keep going back that main road where all the woods are, and its back there.
sorry i cant give a specific place to where the grave is, because when your going back that road its all woods.
hope i helped!

I live in Johnstown and most locals know that the Rolling Mill Mine at the base of the Inclined Plane is not haunted. This was a story generated in the ’80s to try to drum up interest in the Inclined Plane. But the mine is the scene of a creepier, real life tale. Racist serial killer John Paul Franklin shot an interracial couple as they walked along the street below. Franklin, who also tried to kill Hustler publisher Larry Flynt, was never caught for his Johnstown murders, but is serving a lifelong prison sentence for other white supremacist murders he committed elsewhere in the country.

I have also lived in Jtown my whole life (31years) and I can’t say that I believe or not, but one night me and my husband was coming home from a party in Ebensberg and we always came down Dishong Mountain. Well at the top it was very foggy about 2 in the morning and I could see from my passanger side window this glowing figure. It had a long white robe on and a hood almost like a monk would wear. I asked my husband if he could see that and he said yes. As we got closer I was all up in the window trying to see what it was, well when we started going past all it had was a black face. We both had our jaws to the floor in shock. I then turned around in my seat and what ever it was it was floating. The really strange thing is. My friend was coming from that same party about a half hour after us, and her and her friend saw it too. I go to tell her about it the next time I saw her and she started telling me.
Also my brother was in Grand View cemetary one night with a friend and the friend was making fun of the people that got killed in the 1889 flood and his friend got pushed so hard that he knocked out a tooth from hitting his face so hard on the ground. My brother said that they ran down Mill Creek road so fast and never stopped untill they got to town.

As for all you skeptics about the ghosts at the inclined plane and the mine! Well the mine DOES exist!! I’ve been there. it’s along the trail at the foot of the inclined plane just to the right. And yes over 100 men died in that mine on one day. The story is TRUE. Check it with the local newspaper THE TRIBUNE DEMOCRAT. No Bull!! I’ve been to the mine. It is a small opening covered by an iron fence which is easy to squeeze through. I
only ventured just past the entrance. there was a rope extending down into the mine.. but the better angels or my apprenhension told me not to go there. The air coming up from the mine was very cold and this was in Mid July. Of course we’re talking about air from way down in the ground ..so that may account for it…or perhaps NOT.. in any case you get a real eriey
feeling being there.

I’ve lived in Johnstown all my life and I often hike the Incline Trail. It’s a very neat place. I’ve never seen anything weird, but then again I don’t believe in ghosts or the supernatural. However, there was a mine cave in/explosion in the mine at the end of the trail. The mine entrance is barred off, but there is a plaque with the history of the accident. You have to take the path under the tracks and past the sculptures and you will come to the old entrance.

I was born and raised, and have lived in Johnstown all my life, and I have to say that I never heard of the ghost of a little boy at the incline plane, but I know that there are haunted homes in Johnstown, because I lived in one from age 12 to 17 in the Moxham section of J-town. Every member of my family had different experiences that scared them to death. My Mother woke up from a sound sleep with something trying to strangle her,and my Sister said that something held her down on her bed and wouldn’t let her go. My Brother had nightmares of beings with multiple arms and legs tormenting him. And onetime when I was home sick from school heard footsteps comming upstairs,(which I thought was my mother comming up to check on me) and when I got out of bed to see if it was her, looked out of my bedroom door, and there was on one there, just the footsteps. let me tell you, I was so scared that I slammed the door shut, and pushed my dresser up against the door, jumped in my bed, and pulled the covers over my head, and prayed. It was just after I prayed the noises stopped, and the house was quiet again. I know that people want to believe in ghosts, because it brings out the romantic in them. But, I myself I don’t believe in ghosts! I am a christian, and I know that it says in the bible that there are demons that disguise themself to look like people who once lived on this earth. they are referred as “familiar spirits”, and it also says in the bible that even satan comes as an angel of light to deceive even the very elect of God. I think that people need to be carefull when they seek out these ghost or spirits to be entertained, they have to realize that they are opening themselves to evil, and that can possible be harmed by these demons or familiar spirits. People need to first check out what God’s Word says about entertaining demons before they open themselves to harm. I do understand why people want to check these things out, and it’s only out of curiousity. when I was young, I used to explore old mines and caves in the hills of J-town, and I wasn’t aware that I was putting my life in danger, (according to my dad) I found out later that these old caves and mines had sink holes in them and, through the years a lot of kids were either hurt or lost in the sink holes these caves and mines. I thank God that I wasn’t one of them.

I’m from a paranormal research group based out of Johnstown called The Southwestern Pennsylvania League of Apparition Technologists (S.P.L.A.T.). We’ve done a lot of research into the Incline Plane and the neighboring Rolling Mill Mine disaster to try and gather more information about the area being haunted.

It seems the main claim for it being haunted was from an 10 year old boy who reported seeing phantom miners walking the James Wolfe Sculpture Trail behind the Incline. The trail leads back to the former Rolling Mill Mine entrance. An underground gas explosion occurred there in 1901 killing 112 miners, mostly Eastern European immigrants. It is said the boy knew nothing of the mine or the disaster there.

We interviewed workers on the Incline and contacted the Executive Director of the Johnstown Area Heritage Association to try and uncover more information. Unfortunately we were unable to come up with any other accounts of paranormal activity occurring there.

Please search for SPLAT Investigations on Google to visit our website and get more information and documents about The Rolling Mill Mine, Becky’s Grave, Crum Cemetery near Windber and other well known haunted locations around the Johnstown area. I can’t directly post the link to our site here due links being checked for spam.

I have had experiences at night near the rail road tracks behind the mills along Iron Street. A donkey pulling a cart with two workers wearing steel hats. Has anyone else had a similar experience. This was about two years ago.
