I worked at Porticos for a few months in 1984–yes, it very much is haunted. I never saw the ghosts, but I certainly heard them (you could hear them–and I don’t know who they were–talking) and many of us caught shadows, movement and very cold spots all over the house–it’s real.

I LIVED HERE IN BLOOMINGTON ALL OF MY LIFE AND I DO KNOW THAT ALOT OF PLACES ARE VERY HAUNTED IN FACT RIGHT NOW I LIVE IN AN APT THATS HAUNTED AND THE ONE NEXT TO ME IS TOO AND THE FIRST APT IN THE NEXT BULIDING IS ALSO VERY HAUNTED .. Whether one believes in the supernatural or not, this story is absolutely false. The land upon which Indiana University currently sits was farm and grazing land purchased from Moses Dunn in 1883 with the first buildings being erected the following year– well after the existence of the Underground Railroad. The buildings at Seminary Square were destroyed by fire and the original campus land has long been a park with no structure to haunt. The Paris Dunning House, at the entrance to Prospect Hill, has been rumored to also have been a stop along the Underground Railroad. Built as a hunting lodge by Enos Blair in 1845, this structure would at least have existed during the time the Underground Railroad was used.

My father’s mother used to clean Portico’s when it was a private residence in the 1940′s and he swears that one time when no one was there (but he and his mother) and she was outside beating the rugs, he heard someone running and saw a little girl in a dress with white socks and a boy in a plaid shirt, knickers and a cap were standing on the staircase. He thought it was some kids who weren’t supposed to be there so he was going to chase them out and when he ran towards them, they disappeared. Both he and my grandmother had told us about this many years ago and I wonder if something might have happened there? Anyone know anything about the history? I’ve always been curious about it and would love to see pictures or correspond with people who have had similar experiences.

Regarding the comment by “noneedforname,” who claimed “rosehill [sp.] cemetary stories ARE true, especila [sp.] aroud [sp.]the old circle of trees and where the water fountian [sp.] used to sit…”: 1) Hey, learn how to spell or use Spell Check!; 2) I walked through Rose Hill Cemetery tonight and my friend and I did not see, hear or sense any ghosts, supernatural beings or paranormal activity whatsoever; and 3) I walked through the circle of trees by the location of the old fountain and I did not notice anything unusual or supernatural there; 4)I agree with “loco”‘s comment about the allegedly haunted Underground Railroad station: “What a load of ****! Support your story by some documentation and some real facts!”

portico’s is on walnut a couple of blocks north of the square, it’ a yellowish victorian style house across the street from square donuts. if you walk up the alley behind sometimes you’ll see a kid’s face in the upstairs window.(do this when you know there is noone there working just so you know it’s not an employee.
