I live in Jamestown and can see both the original and the new bridge from my front door. I’ve never seen Lydia but I do feel that haunted chill at times. Perhaps it’s wishful thinking, but I believe that she exists and justs wants to get home. It’s almost calming to imagine her so close to where I live.

I live 5 minutes away from this bridge and I drive under it everyday on my way to school. Everyone who lives here knows this story and that this story is not true!

Supposedly, the bridge near Ragsdale High School, Jamestown is not the same bridge she haunts. The one that the story originated has not been open to road traffic for at least 50 years.

I have never been there in a storm or foggy nights. But i have had family members tell me that they have picked her up and they ask her wher she liveis and she will tell them then when they get there she will be gone. So they will go to the door and say i had your daughter and her mom will say honey she has been deid. So i dont now if it is true or not i guess i’ll find out when i get old enought to drive

I have driven through Jamestown before. As I left town I looked behind me and the entire town had disappeared. I think the whole town is a ghost.

I’ve known this story since I was little, and I go under the new bridge almost all the time. I have not seen Lydia or felt her presence, however, I’m not too skeptical of the truth of this story. There are many different versions, and I believe it’s safe to say that we will never know the true story, but I doubt the stories above about people recently taking her home are real (ie. Savannah’s story) because since Lydia died in 1923, it’s highly unlikely that her mother is still alive to this day. And to the people who say it’s just a lie, technically, it isn’t. They don’t know the truth, so it wouldn’t be a lie if it were the actual truth and they just didn’t know it. And you know the saying: some mysteries are better left unsolved…

By the way, John, the town is real.

The story is true! I live about 20 minutes from Jamestown. My grandfather died in 1979. He was a preacher and a traveling bible salesman. I spent alot of time at my grandparents home when I was young. One rainy, stormy night my granfather was coming back from his job over the OLD bridge and a girl was hitching a ride. My grandfather stopped and she got into the back seat. My granfather asked her where she was going and why shw was out that late at night with the weather. She told my grandfather that her name was Lydia, she had went to a school dance and she was just trying to get home. She gave him her address and he proceeded to drive her home. He said she didn’t say anything else but he chatted to her as he drove glancing at the rear view mirror. He pulled into her driveway and turned around and she was gone. He thought she had already gotten out and he just didn’t see her. So he walked up to the house and knocked on the door. A older woman answered the door and he told her that he had picked up a girl named Lydia needing a ride home and when he pulled in she wasn’t in his car anymore. He wanted to make sure she made it in safe. The older woman started to cry a bit and explained that it was her daughter and she had died well over 20 years prior when struck by a automobile walking home from a school dance. The older lady told my Grandfather that he was not the first person to pick her Lydia up that she had been trying to get home for many years. My Grandfather was shocked, apoligized and came home. He woke me and my Grandmother up to tell us what had happened. He also said she was wearing a white dress and barefoot. He was really shook up by it. He had no reason to lie, was a Christian man and didn’t believe in paranormal events, UFO’s or anything of the like. The new overpass covers the old bridge, I think the overpass was built in the late 80’s or early 90’s. Lydia was a real person she was born in High Point in 1904 and died December 1923. For the person saying they lived in Jamestown all their life needs to go to the local libary look up on microfilm in the old newspapers in the month of December 1923. She was killed walking home by a motorist. She died from fatal injuries. I have not heard of anyone “picking her up” in years now. Maybe she is no longer trying to get home because her Mother passed away some time ago. I only heard one other man claim to have picked her up but he is also departed. I know my Grandfather was no liar and would never make up such a story. Believe what you want but those that have access to the High Point libary, look it up for yourself. She did exist and was killed on that bridge on a rainy night. As far as claims of picking her up. I can only be sure of my grandfather’s account. The only “so-called” ghost tale he ever told.

i have interest in Lydia and if her story was real or not! i went to the library in Jamestown, NC. The lady i talked to was prolly in her 60s or 70s. She had told me that there was a fire there and there are no more info on her there but i could go to another library ((like greensboro, nc)) and look in the newspaper archives. i never went to look cause that would be alot of newpapers to go through. i dont think Lydia was her name but Lydia and Jametown Bridge is all we have to go on!!

I lived in Archdale all my life. I have heard this story every time my Dad and I would come to the bridge, but he would tell me that it’s not the bridge that you can go through but the one that is not working any more. he also told me the story about a girl that sits on the railroad track playing the violin on a rainy night, don’t know if that is true but when I get a chance to go under I look up there to see if it is true but never see her. I like ghost stories even if it is real or not. Just like to feel the chill…LOL

NC’s most popular legend, or story, or whatever. But just to set a few things straight against the story listed here. It wasn’t a prom. Lydia Jane Mc********* was killed on New Years Eve 1923. There is even a death certificate found recently. Also, she doesn’t vanish “on the way”. The driver always made it to her house, then she vanished. He goes to the door…. mother tells the story… blah… blah…. blah…. It’s actually one of few legends with so much to back it up. There’s actually a movie coming out about it soon called “The Underpass”. Supposed to give details from someone who supposedly picked her up once. In my opinion, I think if any ghost story is believable, it’s Lydia’s story. Try google search for Lydia Jamestown Bridge NC and check out some of the pics of the old bridge. Or hauntednc.com.

I was told this story when I was 16 (32 now) and I was always fascinated and curious about it, so a couple years later, I decided to go visit since I lived only 25 minutes from it. A Guilford county native took me to the old bridge (which hasn’t been used in several years) It’s off the road and very narrow. I went just when it was getting dark and I walked down the hill through the weeds and tall grass to get to it…when I was about 25 feet from it, I noticed a strange glow inside (not like a flashlight or lantern–it was luminescent-hard to explain) The closer I got, the brighter and bigger it glowed–a strange feeling and was too scared to go any further so I turned around and ran back to my car, but I still believe it was something paranormal…I don’t know, but it was fun, I should go back again.

Savannah-Lydia’s mom would probably be dead by now or in a nursing home since this did happen 80 some years ago. So I doubt what you said is true.
