OK! A hillbilly from WV.... sounds interesting. Well, know one will ever know if the story is true or not. My mother's uncle was one of the people who have "claimed" to pick her up, and even being my Uncle, I still have doubts. His story has been told to our family for years. For those who are really craving a taaste of this story, check out the new film coming out in 2010, The Underpass. The script is amazing! Keep ya ears open

why be afraid of a ghost? a ghost is just a dead creature that used to be alive. A human ghost used to be alive too, they just died after that.

I have heard of this story all my lfe and have drove under this bridge more than once and alway's with friend's. We have been during different time's of the year and in all types of weather. I have NEVER seen ANYTHING but that doesn't mean she has not been seen by other's. I was alway's told that her house was in High Point on Centennial Dr. but no one could ever say if that information was true or not. I am not someone who believe's in 'SPOOKS'. That could be why I have never seen Lydia standing on the side of the road.

Savannah-Lydia's mom would probably be dead by now or in a nursing home since this did happen 80 some years ago. So I doubt what you said is true.

I was told this story when I was 16 (32 now) and I was always fascinated and curious about it, so a couple years later, I decided to go visit since I lived only 25 minutes from it. A Guilford county native took me to the old bridge (which hasn't been used in several years) It's off the road and very narrow. I went just when it was getting dark and I walked down the hill through the weeds and tall grass to get to it...when I was about 25 feet from it, I noticed a strange glow inside (not like a flashlight or lantern--it was luminescent-hard to explain) The closer I got, the brighter and bigger it glowed--a strange feeling and was too scared to go any further so I turned around and ran back to my car, but I still believe it was something paranormal...I don't know, but it was fun, I should go back again.

NC's most popular legend, or story, or whatever. But just to set a few things straight against the story listed here. It wasn't a prom. Lydia Jane Mc********* was killed on New Years Eve 1923. There is even a death certificate found recently. Also, she doesn't vanish "on the way". The driver always made it to her house, then she vanished. He goes to the door.... mother tells the story... blah... blah.... blah.... It's actually one of few legends with so much to back it up. There's actually a movie coming out about it soon called "The Underpass". Supposed to give details from someone who supposedly picked her up once. In my opinion, I think if any ghost story is believable, it's Lydia's story. Try google search for Lydia Jamestown Bridge NC and check out some of the pics of the old bridge. Or hauntednc.com.

I lived in Archdale all my life. I have heard this story every time my Dad and I would come to the bridge, but he would tell me that it's not the bridge that you can go through but the one that is not working any more. he also told me the story about a girl that sits on the railroad track playing the violin on a rainy night, don't know if that is true but when I get a chance to go under I look up there to see if it is true but never see her. I like ghost stories even if it is real or not. Just like to feel the chill...LOL
