Real Haunted Houses

Real Haunted House

Jane Chin Hospital

Webb City, Missouri

During the Halloween season, haunted houses are held in this abandoned hospital. The hospital, however, appears to be truly haunted. It is said that strange noises may be heard coming from the second floor. One many reported having his dog with him. The dog got to the landing between the first and second floor and began whining and barking hysterically. Others have reported the sound of a rolling gurney on the second floor—the former surgery road.

I lived two blocks away from this hospital until I was eleven and my grandma is the one who used to hold spookhouses in it. I heard stories from my family all of my life similar to the ones in your description. I have no doubts that this is truly a haunted hospital.

I grew up near Webb City and still live near there. I have been in the house when it was used as a spook house on halloween and it was the scariest spook house I have yet to go in because the house itself felt so creepy. I didn’t notice anything too unusual because it was packed with people, but on the second floor the climate changed, it felt cold. I know quite a few people from Webb City that will tell you it is indeed haunted.

There are many haunted houses in the town of Carthage near Webb City and two that I know of in Joplin. I lived in a two story marble house on the corner of C street and Pearl for a while in college and my roommate and I both had an experience or two there. We lived on the 2nd floor and the house was a hospital in the civil war. Many times in the middle of the night my bedroom door would slam shut when it was winter and all the windows were closed. Lights would flicker, and when we would leave the house all lights were off and we would come back and the lights would be on. I once heard clanking and whistleing coming from the attic.
My husband lived a block from there at the time on
Byers and he too had experiences. lights flickering, radios coming on in the middle of the night or tv. He even thought he saw the silouette of a man in one room of the house on more than one occasion.

Hey i used to live about 4 blocks from the Hospital. We used to ride our bikes by there and see people walking around and hear noises. By the way it was closed down by then. I was raised in Webb City and lived there until i was 23 and i know it is haunted. I have heard they are trying to renovate it. I am in a paranormal group too and want to get our group permission to go in. If we do we will update everyone.

I live about 6 blocks away from the hospital in Webb City, and I am also a paranormal investigator. The hospital is truly haunted. Although many people would still like to see the inside that is no longer possible. For a while they had it boarded up because of the problems they had and people were getting hurt. Now they are remodeling the inside(not tearing it down). They plan to finish the hospital out with apartments for the elderly.
If it were up to me I would leave the hospital alone. All this is going to do is disturb the spirits inside and the elderly people are only going to have problems.

I also know this is true I have lived in Webb City most of my life and my grandmother lived by Hatton Park so we passed by that creepy hospital many times. As a matter of fact my brother had his tonsils out there probably in about 1976 or so. I agree it was one of the scariest haunted houses ever and if you wanted to go in you better be there early or plan on waiting forever.

I lived in joplin as a teenager, and we would go up near there and freak ourselves silly. There are a LOT of haunted places in and near webb city/joplin. In baxter springs,ks. there is another abandoned hospital, with gurneys ect still in it– now that place is spooky with a capital S.

I live close by in Pittsburg, KS and have heard stories about the old Jane Chin Hospital. I would have loved to have checked it out before the renovation. I have also heard stories about the old Freeman Hospital building in Joplin, MO. I have drove by it but never been in.

For what it is worth here is what I experienced back in the 80’s when I was young at the old Mt. Carmel Hospital in Pittsburg,KS

Unfortunately the remains old Mt. Carmel Hospital building on North Michigan have been torn down and there are new buildings on the site.

Back in 1985 part of the Old Mt.Carmel Hospital building, basement and some underground tunnels were still standing. It was a great place to scare a group of people. The old hospital closed around 1971 or 1972 and was left empty until was torn down in the late 1990’s.

In the basement there was an old Iron Lung, a lab with walk in cooler, boiler room, and kitchen. There were also some tunnels that led to the old nurses/Nuns housing and the building where they burned medical remains. The tunnels had huge rat and other critter tracks in the mud/dirt.

On the upper floors there were still a lot of old hospital beds, wheel chairs and other hospital items from the 1970’s and before. It was just like they just moved and left what they did not need behind.

In late August in the summer of 1985, I was there with a group of friends and we were going to scare some girls. I don’t believe in ghost but find the subject interesting. I know things happen that can’t be explained.

We were on the 2nd floor on the southeast section of the building and walked in to an old hospital room. The room suddenly became very cold. The outside temperature was around 85 and it was about 10:00pm. The room felt like walking in to a room that had the AC on. The outside windows were broken out and there were no drafts. We went to rooms on each side, the rooms directly above and below this room and they were not much cooler than the outside temperature. When we went back to the cold room it was still cold. You could stand in the hallway and reach your arm in the doorway and feel the temperature difference.

There were about 6 of us that witnessed this so I know it was not just me dreaming this up. We went back a few days later on a hot evening and the room was not cold at first but with in a few minutes the temperature began to go down. This time we took a thermometer and when went in the room it was in low 80’s an dropped to the low 60’s very quickly.

I don’t know how to explain this but it was strange. Too bad the old building is gone.

Just an update on some of the old hospitals….I had my tonsils removed at Jane Chinn in 1973. I don’t remember anything odd, but was a child at the time. Jane Chinn is no longer abandoned, it has been renovated for housing.
The Baxter Springs hospital was torn down a few years ago. I was born there, and stopped by and got a few bricks during the demolition.
The old Freeman hospital still stands in Joplin, just off 20th street. It is in disrepair, and I’m surprised every day that is not torn down.
I am on this year’s comittee for the Carl Junction Project Graduation Spookhouse in Waco, Missouri. This is held in a very old farmhouse, 2 stories plus a basement. I have been told there are lots of stories about this house. Does anybody know anything about a house in Waco that is supposed to be haunted? Please let me know.

i went to the haunted house with my friend. We’d heard about it because we live pretty close to kansas city and we were looking for a thrill. We got up to the 32nd floor and we hear a chain saw. We don’t run because we thought we were tough. The lights are flickering and everytime they went on a man got closer and closer. Next thing I know my friend is grabbed and she’s screaming and she’s dragged away. They found her about 3 hours later and she couldn’t form complete sentences. I visit her in rehab every other week. So think twice before you go.

My mother was a nurse at Jane Chin in the 80’s and the hospital only closed in 88 or 89. We used the hospital for a haunted house for our Band’s fund raiser. When we went into the hospital it was left like it would be ready to open the next day for patient’s.Old hospitals and new hospitals are the same. People die in hospitals them every day and rarely are they ever ready for death. All of the time I spent there there was never anything angry there.

hi. i’ve lived in jasper missouri for 4 years and webb city where the hospital is located is only about 30 minutes away. i have gone to the jane chin hospital with my two aunts in the middle of the day. despite being leery of the place, i volunteered to walk up to one of the side doors with my aunts little maglite. there was a hole in the door where a door knob would be and i walked up and shined the lite through only to have the light disapear into darkness. i swear to you, that is the creepiest place i have ever gone. as soon as you get about 3 feet from the building, the atmosphere changes and its like everything outside of that 3 feet disapears and it is really quiet and you dont hear any cars driving by.i quickly left and ran back to the car. i havent been back since but want to take a few friends back there with me soon. one of my old friends used to live around there and she would walk by it everyday on her way to and from school. she said she could hear odd noises and faint screams coming from the abandonned building.
also back when my mom was a kid , she heard her parents say that if someone was in jane chin hospital, they were never coming out. there were stories of bad doctors and malpractice.

i also live in a house that is haunted. not like scary haunted but friendly. i think its my great grandparents and our dog that died last year. it was my great- grandparents house and they’ve been dead for years. my bedroom door moves by itself, you can smell cigar smoke(no one in my house smokes and smoking is not aloud in my house), i have seen people walk down the hall and into the kitchen, i’ve seen my dead dog walk by into the kitchen, i and my mom both have waken up in the middle of the night to the sound of and old radio playing old songs but nothing is on, and just the other day i was washing my hair in the kitchen sink when i felt a hand rest on my right shoulder. no one was in the room with me and it made me stop for a sec and my heart skipped a beat.

Abigail, You may want to think about learning how to type yourself. When you’ve accomplished that it wouldn’t hurt to learn alittle Correct Grammer, Punction, Capitalization and then spelling. That is if your not still telling others about the mess ups they made. Why start trouble in a site that is for fun not troublemaking? AND Shae, I guess you don’t read well, he/she never said.”Grandma OWNED” they said.”my grandma is the one who use to HOLD spookhouses in it.” I like this site alot. I have always belived in ghosts or whatever “they” are. Let’s all be nice.

I live across the street from the Jane Chin Hospital. I completely believe that it is haunted. My mom was a candy striper there when she was 10 and has had weird experiences there herself. We know of several nurses who used to work there and there were parts of the basement that they would refuse to go into. Currently, the hospital is being renovated into housing for senior citizens, and I have heard that some tenants have complained of their doors mysteriously flying open and shut. CREEPY!!!
We have even experienced unexplained occurrences in our house!

Tiffney says:

March 26, 2007, 10:54 pm

Yes, it’s true, when I was 10 I lived a half-block away, and now just across the street. I volunteered as a candy striper, and one day while filling a cart with medical equipment for a doctor, I passed out, no warning…nothing. I woke up on the cold concrete floor of the supply room with several doctors and nurses looking over me…..It was scary. I had never passed out before, and it hasn’t happened since.
I heard several stories then, from employees of the hospital, and have heard several more since.
We have several creepy things that have happened to us in our house…..ceiling fans turning on by themselves, our thermostat gets turned all the way up and all the way down, doors open and close by themsleves…..nothing real bad though….

jay says:

October 10, 2007, 1:57 am

Ok, I do believe in this kind of stuff but only to a certain degree. Feel free to correct if you think I’m wrong. When the spirit leaves the body, it can’t come back. What we see is a familiar spirit. These spirits are demons that watch you and “tattle” when you do something wrong. So they know almost your entire routine. When the person dies, the familiar spirit takes on the person’s form, hence the ghost. When people think that they can play with this, its like playing with fire for the first time. Its dangerous, for real. You may think its fine, and a little fun. Just try not to piss it off. Cause it might stick with you. The only way to protect yourself is to apply Christ’s blood (annointed oil) over yourself. Faith is key.

I was born in Webb City and have lived there my whole life. Anyone that has spent any amount of time in the town and says they have never heard of Jane Chin hospital and atleast a few stories about it being haunted, has been very isolated there. I worked in it a few years, when it was a spook house. The first year was no big deal, very scary and creepy, but nothing happened. The second year, a couple of friends and myself had a handful of things happen that caused us to leave before the Halloween season was done and never go back. One of the friends even received counciling over it. We all swore, for our friends sake to never talk about it again. It scares the s&*t out of me to think of elderly having to live there now.
That being said, it’s not the worse place in town. Webb City Health and Rehab, which used to be the old Elmhurst bldg, is F-A-R worse. The area all around it is bad to. Back in the 80’s a couple owned a log cabin that was on one side of the road and the airport bought the property so the couple had to move the cabin across the road. When they did all kinds of things happened in there home. Beds jumping up and down doors opening, organs playing, even someone getting hospitalized. There story was even on Ripley’s Believe it or not.

football fan says:

October 12, 2007, 5:08 pm

I posted a comment on here a few days ago about a couples log cabin. A friend saw the post a called me about it. I told him that it was me and he said i should post the whole story, so here goes. Back in the 80’s a couple owned a nice log cabin style home on the county road behind the old Elmhurst bldg. They lived on the west side of the road and the airport purchased the property and gave them a small piece of land on the east side of the road. The couple had 2 daughters who still lived at home with them and loved their home. So they decided to move their home across the road, instead of bldg a new one. When they started moving the home all kinds of things started happening. Tools would disappear. Lights would turn on and off by themselves. One of the daughters closet door would open and shut during the night. The home was two stories and the bedrooms were on the upper floor. During the evenings sometimes you could hear footsteps upstairs that sounded like cowboy boots walking across a hardwood floor, the problem was that the whole up stairs had thick shag carpet and a really thick pad under it. They had a electric organ. The place they were moving the house was at the end of a circle drive and their mail box was at the end of the circle drive, on the main road. Sometimes when they would walk to the mail box, they could hear the organ playing. When they would get back to the house they would check the organ and it would be unplugged. One of the two daughters was an older teen, maybe 17-18. The other was younger maybe 13. Once the older daughter was baby sitting the other one and had her boyfriend over. It was late and the older one and her boyfriend were watching a movie when they started hearing sounds all around them in the room. they looked over and say what looked like a small child down on their knees with their hands over there face, crying. so the boyfriend got up off the couch to walk over there and a hugh set of hands hit him in the chest and knocked him back over the couch. (they have pictures of the bruises that look like hand prints). The younger daughters bed would slide across the room sometimes at night and sometimes start bouncing up and down. When the family finished moving the home the husband built a deck outside one of the up stairs bedrooms and built a storage room onto the back of the house. Upon completion they took a bunch of pictures of the finished home. The person who developed them had his studio catch fire while he was working on the photos. In the photos of the home some look like the house is on fire, others it looks a if a demans head is looking out the window with flames all around it. The cabin burnt down a couple of months later. The parts that were added during the move did not burn. The storage room that was left standing, had a gas can full of gas and a lawn mower and oils and cleaning chemicals in it, yet it didn’t burn. The family moved across town. Their story was on That Incredible and Replieys believe it or not. The older daughter had some things happen to her afterwards. The family called church members in, preachers in even a catholic minister. They finally got it all behind them. I am very close to the family, today no one is aloud to talk about it.

Hey this place sounds very cool, I love TAPs on the SciFi channel and think that the way they go about an investigation is very good. I too would like to do some investigating in a few places mentioned but lack the gear. I think that the idea that there is an explaination for most activity that people see, photograph, and hear. If more of us could be rational enough to pursue the evidence then the real paranormal would be presented and more people could believe.

This place is basically in my back yard. I went by there today and they already have elderly people living in there. I sat in the circle drive of Hatton Park across the street and studied the building. As I was watching, a side door in the back of the building in the alley flew open and remained opened for about 15 seconds, and then slowly shut again. There was no wind at the time, so I just have to wonder what it was. The door had a big door closure on it so it should have closed as soon as it opened, but it didnt.
I drove on around and looked at the building, crews are still there doing work on the place, but they do have residents living there as we speak.

I was born at Jane Chinn Hospital in 1955, as were three of my siblings, and had my tonsils out there with my sister in 1965. I used to spend a lot of time around there because a woman who was like a grandmother to me lived next to it, plus the town’s great osteopath, Dr. William Wells-Lee worked there. I have a love for the building as an historical site, but it also creeped me out and seemed to come from another era, which it did. There are horse and buggy pictures of Webb City with the exact same building in the background. I can’t believe it’s being remodeled and is still standing. My birth certificate has a picture of the hospital on it and you’d think I was born in 1920 from the way that picture looks! If that building has survived this long, that’s proof in itself it has its own powers. It was considered old when I had my tonsils out and we quit going there shortly thereafter. But, I must also say, the greatest nurse I’ve ever known, Saundra Garvey Smart, also worked there. So that’s two very good and kind people I know who worked there. The hospital is both great and weird, and certainly immortal!

Hey I worked in Jane Chinn Hospital for 4 years when it was a hunted house I lived right across the alley from it i use to go through and make sure no one was left in side and close doors to the rooms. and get to the end of the hallway and turn around and see all the doors i closed open again. also one night while a lady by the name of Jann Ladd set up a tape recorder at the nurses station on the second floor. and replayed it the next day and heard a nurse telling another nurse it was time for Mr. Smiths medicine. and then a cart being pushed away from the nurses station.

My aunts house is haunted and she has a dog. Everytime the ghost is near him he barks a lot. But now we have figured out why he barks a lot. Now we try not listen to hm. There has been stories about people seeing the ghost. I should know I’ve seen his back. But that is a different story.

Hey I am a nurse (LPN), I am an RN student, Im also a paranormal investigator so if anyone needs another team member let me know my email is rgroyer1985@yahoo.com, my grandma use to live in webb city, I live in Joplin. My grandmother use to be a nurse at
Jane chinn and at the old freeman, unfornately she isnt alive any more, but she use to tell stories of how there were 2 DO surgeons at Jane Chinn Dr.Slaughter and Dr.Butcher and they would compete on taking out appendix and gallbladders, which one of her good friends who was a nurse there also confirmed for me, she said they killed alot of people with there surgeries.

“plus the town’s great osteopath, Dr. William Wells-Lee worked there.”- Replying to this post. Dr. William Wells-Lee was my grandfather who started and practiced at Jane Chin. I never met him because he past away in the late 70’s. I grew up in Joplin and even went to the spookhouses at Jane Chin, there was something about being in the that hospital. I never experienced anything scary, but my friends who were with me never went back again. The stories are true and the hospital definately had unfinished business. My family even confirms that they have heard stories for decades that the hospital is haunted.

Opened in the early 1800s, the Northampton State Hospital lived nearly 200 years before it was shut down and abandoned in the late 1980s / early 90s. It is located in Northampton, Massachusetts, an urban city located in the western part of the state, about a two hour drive from Boston. It was what most families of mental patients seeked as a center of help, but for the patients themselves, it was nothing less than Hell.

Though police and staff keep a tight seal on what exactly did happen to patients at the hospital, many stories have surfaced, ones that tear at your nerves as soon as you set foot in the building.

A friend of mine crawled in through a window with a couple of her buddies. During their short 15 minute stay, she claims to have passed numerous doors with signs that read “Lobotomy” on them. She also mentioned that there were uncountable amounts of rusted surgical utensils scattered across the floors. On the second floor, there were patients’ rooms, as well as many rooms holding dirty, white padded walls, a chair in the corner, and a two-way mirror. Almost all of the patients’ rooms had no windows and were lit by cracks of sunlight peering through holes in the top of the rooms made by rocks being thrown. She recalls opening a random door only to a room of pitch black darkness. Curiously, she threw a rock into the darkness, only to never hear it land. She concludes her expiriences with, “It was just scary as Hell.”

Another story, told by her mother, says that patients were locked in the padded rooms and told to sit in the chair. There they sat for hours on end, while staff on the other side of the mirror watched and questioned them through an intercom. Once they thought they knew what was wrong with the patient, they would sometimes perform a lobotomy on them, or kill them.

A friend’s father, an ex-janitor at the hospital, gives us graphic detail on how he had to remove a patient who had hanged himself.

Whether these stories relate to any truth or not, police sure don’t want anyone to find out. Doors to the hospital are locked and binded shut. Windows are borded up but are usually torn down or broken with rocks, allowing curious visitors to enter illegally.

The Hospital was also featured on a segment of the show “Scariest Places On Earth”, where a frightened family went in the building with cameras, and found everything from a dog’s skeleton and blood samples, to hearing eerie footsteps and noises in other rooms, or sometimes even the room they were in. The show also mentioned how a “lunatic” patient escaped the hospital years ago and hasn’t been seen since.

I, personally, have not yet been able to enter the building, but I’m hoping that because it’s only a mere 10 minute drive away, I will one day be able to.

My friend Aryana used to live in a haunted house located on the outskirts of Mountain View, Missouri. The main spirit was Clinton Thompson, Aryana’s uncle who died in a car accident. Well Aryana’s 5 yr old brother Clinton Allen would claim a ghost was always wanting to play with him. One day Celena, the mother of Aryana & Clinton A was going through old pictures of Clinton T and little Clinton said that’s the man who always plays with me. So It was a family member ghost who wanted no harm, but to still be with his family.

There was also a DEMON in this house. In the upstairs in the old bathroom, there was a little door that led to the attic, well Clinton would cry hysterically if someone put him in that bathroom. He claimed there would be red eyes looking at him. He was so terrified he wouldn’t even look in the bathroom.

I was born in Jane Chinn Hospital in 1962. Delivered by the awesome Dr. Wells-Lee. I know this is a haunted building. I can’t help wondering why there haven’t been big TV investigations on this building. Would be interesting to say the least.

My grandmother (Roseland) was the cook there when I was a little girl. She would always take me into the kitchen with her. That was back in the late 70’s or early 80’s, the hospital was still running, but at that time there were very few patients.
I’ve always been open to spirits and ghosts, even back then, I considered them my friends. There seemed to be more spirits and ghosts in that hospital than patients, really…..
The odd thing to me now is knowing that I thought of them as friends, playing hide and seek and all that good stuff. I realize now years later, that the ghosts were probably hiding (or not showing themselves) because I actually scared them as much as they should have scared me.
I don’t think they should use the old hospital as a haunted house on Halloween, they should open it as a haunted bed and breakfast or something so it can be seen whenever wanted.
One memory I have that I understand more clearly now is when my Grandma walked back into the kitchen after going to the restroom. I was sitting on the table eating an ice cream bar that one of Grandma’s helpers gave to me while Grandma was gone. Grandma asked where I found the ice cream bar (because she looked for one for me not 30 minutes before that, the box was empty.) I told Grandma that her helper got it for me. That’s when my Grandma told me that she never had a helper in all the years she had worked there. I explained what the helper looked like, Grandma just giggled. I believe now that grandma knew as well as I did about the spirits and ghosts, and that she liked them as much as me. I think she giggled because the ghost fooled me. Obviously, there was a ghost that I didn’t know was a ghost…..

ive heard of the hospital…many times…we live in jane chins home. my poor children have kids at school coming up to them all the time asking if the house is truly haunted, of course they have to tell the kids its the hospital not the house. but the whole story is cool…her story is WAAAAAY better. but like i said, i live in her house, so i had to research everything about her, the house and how 2 of her 3 husbands died before her and left her ALL their money, the 3rd out lived her, but no one ever found her money…of course we are currently in the process of tearing the house apart board by board…not to mention the basement floors, but no luck yet. NOT A LIE!!!

I have lived in webb city most of my life. When my sister and I were little we would walk to Hatton Park. Before it became housing for the ederly I very much wanted to look inside. I had a feeling, even being very young, that there was something in there that wasn’t human. It looked very sad before they built it back up. But even though people live there now, it still gives me the creeps walking by. I wish though I would have been able to see in it before they built it up. But I am glad they did something with it instead of ripping it down.

Hi, everyone. Mom used to work at JC years ago and saw some “odd” things. I worked at Oak Hill Hospt before the merger. Lower floor, night shift, in what used to be the morgue. Never saw anything but heard alot, including the elevator going to and from the surgery ward on it’s own. When I had to get supplies from a room that hadn’t been used in years, got bad bad vibs. I have no doubt JC and OH are both haunted.

I remember my grandfather being carried by my dad to the car after he had surgery at Jane Chin. My mother sisn’t like the hospital so whenever she need to go to have us kids, she went to St. John’s in Joplin. Is Jane Chin haunted? Frankly, I don’t believe in ghost, but this place is spooky and makes a great haloween haunted house.
