Liberty Theater
This theater is supposedly haunted by a woman, who spends most of her time lurking in the woman’s bathroom. The theater was closed in 1998.

The Liberty Theater is a cool place. My aunt does the janitorial work there…..and being in there, I have not noticed any incounters so far. She has told me that in the evenings, a male ghost figure sits in the chairs and watches the “plays”. The liberty theater is open again now, and has things that do go on in there too.

The Liberty has since reopened and has undergone a multi-million dollar remodel and restoration. There are many different shows performed there throughout the year; it is once again a hub for entertainment in Astoria.

I remember a chat with the former metaphysical
bookstore owner downstairs, where the cafe is now
before the big multi-million renovation … She was
genuinely afraid to go upstairs, because of noises,
boxes moving/falling by themselves, etc .. the local
network of psychics here always knew about the “man”
upstairs, some say they even saw him, but oddly, the
stories were always suppressed … now the new
director of the Liberty Theatre says she welcomes
all paranormal investigators, but most have moved
on to some of the many other buildings in Astoria,
and I was only upstairs briefly, a year ago, on
a photo assignment for The Daily Astorian at that
time …
If anyone who was involved with the bookstore is
still around, feel free to contact me, as I have
heard there still is quite a Wiccan underground
here … thanks joe@astoriamovies.com

i actually heard that the flavel house is haunted also. i was told that a lamp or light in the top tower of the flavel house will just turn on sometimes at night and no body is there. never actually saw it but would love to just sit near by and see if it really does.

I was raised in and around Astoria–Olney & Warrenton.
I’m positive there are hauntings in Astoria and the area. My aunt lives in the oldest house standing in Warrenton and the feeling of our deceased relatives of 4 or 5 generations just oozes through me when I visit her house, particularly my great grandma who died the year I was born.
BUT-There is a huge old house in the extra steep area of Astoria, I don’t know the street because I was about 8 years old–my mom was a private duty nurse for an elderly couple named the Macy’s. Would have been 1978. Does anyone know who the Macy’s were and which house they owned?
That house – I was only 8 but I swear there were old musty feeling ghosts, particularly on the second floor.
I think there is a third floor also.
There are other places that made me get goosebumps.

Hello all, I live in Astoria. I went to the Liberty once , after the renovation. Its rumored that you can see the woman in the mirror.. I didnt see her. The bunkers rock. What fun and creepy at dusk. I would like to know who has the oldest house in warrenton, we owned the second oldest house, and Granny had the OLDEST house here. Till we had to tear it down, it was leaning so far…e-mail me if you know… (tara??) babydoll4ver@yahoo.com

The extra steep area you’re talkign about, Tara is A Street, and the name of the house is the Flavel House. A lot of people have talked about it previously in this thread. It’s very cool. I’d like to go in there sometime. It was closed for cleaning or something the last time I was in Astoria.

OMG! I used to work at the Liberty Theatre when it was still in operation as a movie theatre. You definetly get a weird feeling in the women’s bathroom…always have…But that’s nothin’ compared to the feeling you get when you go downstairs…to I guess it was a basement of sorts…They kept the ice machine down there…So we HAD to go down there…You got so scared by whatever you felt down there that you just wanted to run….I think I only went down there once alone and never again after that. There was also a locked door down there we never got into…I heard that whenthey remodeled it they found a bunch of really old movie posters in there…It’s haunted for sure…and whatever was in the basement wasn’t good…I never saw a ghost but you could feel them there.

If you can’t spell “Ouija Board” then you deffinatley shouldn’t be playing with them.
They are not toys and shouldnt be used by those who do not know how to correctly open & close the board.

Downtown Astoria is built on a maze of tunnels. I wouldn’t be suprised if there were some unexplained things that happen there. They supposedly were used to “shanghei” people…although I have lived in astoria and have never seen anything unexplained. I used to go to the liberty all the time as a kid before it as renovated and never saw anything

How can a website or blog talk about haunted Astoria without mentioning the Officer’s Inn Bed and Breakfast? Sure, I own it (me and the bank). I’m a little skeptical, but some of our guests are not!

I don’t know if this would qualify as an experience or not, but I used to live in Astoria before the Liberty theater was closed. I watched several movies in there and never really had any problems. Except one time when I watched a movie there with my best friend and we both were joking around about wanting to experience some type of supernatural activity. Well the movie started and about 5 minutes into it, the radio started to play through the theater speaker system over top the movie’s sounds. It was pretty loud and we complained to the staff and they said they didn’t know why it was doing that and they couldn’t make it stop. So they gave us some free movie tickets for our troubles.

The theatre was closed in 1998 for renovation. It re-opened in 2002. There is another ghost reputed to also haunt the theatre. He’s known to the locals as Handsome Paul, who purportedly wears a suit & was a pimp who murdered one of his ladies–who is the restroom restless spirit aforementioned–by throwing her off the theatre balcony when she apparently decided to leave his employ. Nice guy. Makes some decide to remain single…
