Real Haunted Houses

Real Haunted House

Libertyland

Memphis, Tennessee

A very kind man once operated the carousel in this park. When a child’s balloon flew into the carousel one day, the man offered to retrieve it. He, however, forgot to turn the carousel off and was resultantly decapitated. It is said the man now roams around the attraction occasionally making his presence known.

I live in Memphis, have all my life. Currently living in Bartlett. I have heard of the Liberty Land ghost many times, but no one has been able to prove it real or fake. I have also heard of Voodoo Village from my dad who said that when he was teenager, he and some friends went down there (1974) and he said that they barely got down the road before weird stuff and sounds and shadows and stuff started happening. they made it through most of the place and then two of the guys with him, looked up into a tree and started screaming, turned white, and turned the car around and punched it out of there. they wouldnt say what they saw but my dad is still friends with one of them and he still to this day will not talk about it and starts sweating and turning pale if you ask him. so maybe there is something to the story. also, there is a graveyard on 51 highway goin into millington that is haunted and i have seen it for myself along with my sister and aunt who were with me. I think it is called Woodhaven Cemetary. Anyways we were there one night play in the graveyard like most teenagers do just to get spooked and have fun and my aunt was in the car. well, the graveyard is divided by little roads. we were standing one side of a road in there facing 51 highway, when we saw a man with black hair and a reddish looking shirt walking towards us. at first, we just thought there was someone else in there or the people who take care of it were telling us to get out. but as he got closer to the road coming towards us, he just dissapeared!!! well, of course, we were a little freaked out so we went back to the car. well, in the middle of the cemetary, there is a huge statue of jesus. and as we drove around it leaving, the eyes were following us until we got out. i have been back there since then but only during the day. i have asked people to go back with me at night and investigate but no one wants to go. I may just have to go by myself and take some pictures and see if i can prove any of it.

I lived in west TN for 30 yearsand never heard this story. Every summer we would go to libertyland and never saw a thing out of the ordinary. This could be true or not. But you would think there would be a record of the death somewhere in the shelby co records.

I worked at Libertyland in the 80s and there was a guy that got caught in gears of the carousel and was killed. It was certainly no legend or myth.

How can he “forget” to turn off the carousel? Weirdo!!!!! Oh well, he still did it to help a kid get a balloon. That is so sweet of him.

To the person who said they were from Voodoo Village, you’re not. The people who live there do not call it that, and hate it when you do.

All right i had a fun adventure last night i went to alot of the suposedly haunted and REALLY creapy places last night and voodoo village was by far the SCAREIEST place i went to. Three of my friends and i went down to the bus on mary angela road around two in the morning and the scariest thing happened when we got there there was a lady standing in some type of aferican dress and she had her head crooked to the side with a deranged look on her face then she started to walk toward us. It was very foggy and as she came toward us from the fog about four other people with corpse like features emerge rom the fog and they all had VERY large knifes and the look on our faces was like “O MY GOD” its time it get the heck out of here! As we drove in reverse they started to chase us so we sped up and got the heck out of there so thats my story of my adventure from last night 6/15/08 i hope none of yall are as dumb as we were last night that was almost a near death experiance and i will probably go back tonight. HAHA

Sorry guys but the Libertyland story is true but it was a 17 year old by the name of Mike Crockett who was caught in the carousel gears. I worked at Libertyland in the late eighties. I have memories that I will cherish forever from working there every summer.

See the story below from Memphis Flyer.

The Grand Carousel has long had a reputation for being haunted. On August 2nd, 1976, not two months after the park opened, a 17-year-old boy named Mike Crockett was operating the carousel as his first summer job. When a child in the park lost his balloon in the ride’s inner workings, Crockett climbed into its roof to retrieve the prize. While he was inside, the carousel somehow started up and the gears crushed him to death.

My Mother, sister and I were on the carousel when this happened. I was very young and the balloon got away from the child and went in the center part of the carousel where the man running it went in after it. The ride then started to jerk and then stopped. They got us all off of the ride and here the ambulance came. We later found out the man had got caught in the motor and it killed him. This is very true. Don’t know about the haunting though.

not only has libertyland been closed down for several years now, as of this year the mid-south fair will not be held on the grounds either.(another “genius” idea of our mayor,”King Willie”) and that story was total b.s. anyway.
