Main St.
During the rush to buy Christmas presents, the mother of the house dashed out, and forgot her son. When she realized what she had done, she quickly turned around and headed back to the house. She expected that her son would be in tears, for he was claustrophobic, but instead, he was in the kitchen drinking a glass of chocolate milk. When asked about how he got the milk, the son explained that a nice old lady said that his mommy would be home soon, and she prepared a glass of milk for him. He also told the police that he could see through the lady, and she looked exactly like a woman on a picture in the attic–a woman who lived in the home during the 1920s.
That story was pretty scary if I were the little boy I would of had a heart attack.

Seems like a very nice old lady in my opinion, somewhat the same thing happend to my daughter, but it was an old man with a cat.

This is so cute. we used to have a ghost in our house. i think we have on in this house too. its actually scary if you think about it because most ghost don’t know they are dead. but i think it is facinattuing. of course i wouldn’t want to see one of anything for myself. i see the shadows in the hall way here and i think it talked to me yesterday and i cried but.. never really SEEN his face. my boyfriend is into ghost and he likes to go ghost hunting. i don’t know.

This reminds me of an incident when I was a kid, maybe 6 or 7 years old. I was hanging out with my cousin at her grandma’s house and we decided to take ourselves for a little walk. Not smart, as they lived on a very busy road, but that’s beside the point…
Up the road maybe 1/10 of a mile was this really old house; it has since been demolished but I’d place it to be around 150 years old at that time. Well as we were walking past the house, this little old lady was on the porch and asked us to come inside for milk and cookies…being little kids, we jumped right to it. Had quite a nice time with her too, as I recall.
When we finally got back to my cousin’s grandma’s house (who of course was beside herself worrying about where we’d disappeared to) and told her where we had been, she called us outright liars because that old lady had died several years prior to this incident.
Over the next several years I started to think I just didn’t remember what had happened correctly; childhood memories often get mixed up over time. One day I finally thought to ask my cousin’s grandma if she remembered that day…which she definitely did and retold to me exactly the way I had remembered it. She was even still ticked off about us wandering down the road by ourselves and “lying” to her! LOL
After this I started asking around about the house and the old lady and heard quite a few stories about people needing to go into the house for one reason or another and having strange things happen. Some of the older people in town remembered the lady quite well and told me how nice she was, loved children, etc. I would have loved to visit with her again; unfortunately by the time I was old enough to go back on my own the house had already been torn down.

Wonderful story, miz Sarah, I thank thee for that.
I have expirienced same kind of phenomenon in my life too. It was an older lady too, who had a farm in the middle of the forrest. I visited her few times and when I last time visited there, she said it was nice of me to come. It was nice, that someone remebered her. next time I went there, I found only the skeleton of an old house. The old lady was there no more. And the truth is, that nobody really did not remember her when I asked about her. They knew that there had lived a woman in the forrest, but they did not knew who she was. I too never got her name, but nowday’s I call her Lemmikki, as the name of a flower. In english it is the same as Forget-me-not. I was some how a little bit scared, but still, sometimes I still go there to give my greetings to her. Not very often, but when I am nearby the place. Just for that she would not be forgotten.

I’m not sure if this was the complete title of the book and I am not sure who the author is,however I got the book when I took a ghost tour in Williamsburg VA during the early 1990. I lost the book. HOwever it did have the address listed as Union ST. The house number was also listed however I am I don’t recall the house number. If you find out please let me know.

well to tell you the truth about all of you, this is your fact of your ways to say you have experience yourselves inwhat you have seen. I do believe in ghosts myself since I see them quite often. I have the sense to see this spirits and some are good and some are not they can also harm you in any different way they can possible get your attention, since they think they are not dead. The bottom line is for experience here, one is don’t film the dead. they don’t like that, I experienced it myself since i thought i could catch the dead in film, I for myself had a broken hand, fractured leg and i had a deep cut from my thigh all to the way to the top. so i advise you don’t try it yourselves you’ll get seriasly hurt or killed for going beyond.

Whoa! I didn’t know this story was known nationwide! I am the boy who had the experience with the lady from the twenties! Yes, I have severe claustorphobia, and love chocolate milk. I do not remember the old lady, for I am no longer a child, but I do remember my mother’s reaction to the story. Geez. . .I told only one other person about this experience (my next door neighbor at the time), and it’s all over the Internet! That just goes to show how powerful the media is today.

This is a great web-site and the stories are interesting too. Ghost are exciting and mysterious.
Everyone should believe in ghost because they are all around us everyday. And if I would of been that
little boy I would of thanked the old lady and gave her a hug. Also, why do some of you ask for the address to this house? If you were reading everything you would of known that the house isn’t there anymore.
Comment by Mr. Gingles | 10.18.2006 | 4:13 pm
This house was surrounded by thick tall hedges, creating a mysterious atmosphere. There have been stories surrounding the house since the early 50’s. Now it has been replace by The United States Post Office. It faced Main Street and the back was on Union Street.

I have lived in Salem for 18 years and I have met the owners of the house. They do not like to talk about the old lady, and they will not let anyone come in to search for her. She has been a protective spirit for their children, acting almost like a nanny. She appears in some of their family pictures - always near the kids - she looks like a ball of light. They don’t want to upset her by having people all over the house trying to see if they “feel” her. I don’t blame them, she has been good to them so they are just returning the favor.
Comment by Lindsey | 11.2.2006 | 1:23 am

Wow this story was not that scary until I started reading the comments about other storie. If I were the boy I would be ver y scared and I would not eat from the woman. She might be nice but i wouldn’t have known her that well to eat from her. I think it was vey smart for the family not to have any1 in the house because they didn’t want to upset the ghost because she has been so nice. But if the ghost was mean I would sertinly want some1 to get the ghost out of my house or I would really move away from it.Expecially if I had kids. But I am way to young I am only a child.

You all need to remember that children are more apt to seeing spirits and ghosts because their imaginations are so active that they don’t scare as easily as grown-ups. When I had my oldest daughter, I still lived at home and we lived in an old Civil War house that was haunted. My three year old would stand in the middle of the living room and talk to someone that wasn’t even there and I could tell that whatever she was talking to was taller than her and tell them that ‘mommy was going to be very mad because she’s not supossed to talk to strangers’ and then she would tell them ‘bye’ and walk away. If I hadn’t seen the ghost with my own eyes and heard another one, I would have thought my daughter was insane.

My house has wood allover like a cabin He made all the edges and cabinets whith his hands.Well the house wows everybody when they come in its cosy and wellcoming.N-E-Ways. We started to do some remodoling in the kitchen and thats when things started to happen.First My husband and I where about to go to sleep I heard a lady crying and I thought it was my neighbor(long stroy)well I like ghost storys but my hair stud up and I thought my husband was asleep He told me to take a look at this point we could hear it in our hallway.well as I stood up to check it stoped. The other thing was my mother in law was her from PuertoRico she was in the first room aseelp.Everybody was asleep and the I heard a slam on the kitchen window I thought someone was breaking in and My husband got his gun.As I was getting up to check on the kids a cup fell right in the middle of the Kitchen floor and shattered.Like it was thrown with force. And I told my husband someone is in the house.when we both went to check I called out to see if it was one of the kids and they were all asleep.and my mother in law as snoring well we saw the glass allover and we check all the door and windows. And nothing. Also the lights sometime flicker,

Cool story, I should check out Main St. sometime, I live like really close. I believe my house is haunted too. There was an old keyboard up in the attic when we moved in and whenever there’s only 1 or 2 people in the house you can take the keyboard downstairs and turn it on and after a few minutes the keys will start pressing down by themselves, creeps me the hell out…. Lol nice story though.

Salem is a pretty weird town as it is. I used to drive from NoVA to Universities in middle VA all the time for parties while in college. Once we got turned around and stopped in Salem…
We entered the town over a bridge or overpass or something and it seemed pretty normal. You know, cars…people…errands being run…
We went into a Pizza Hut to use the bathroom and maybe get something to go, you know? (which actually may have been on Main St also) But the place was completely empty. I called out and even went into the kitchen and didn’t see anyone. I turned around and saw on one of the counters an open newspaper, half eaten donut, and a steaming coffee, still nobody around.
Then I noticed the clock on the wall was going backwards, fast. I was like, “Dude, eff this, let’s GTFO.” We got outside and looked around. The entire town was quiet. No cars moving, no people, no activity; nothing. I looked across the street at the gas station. There were cars at the pumps but nobody there or inside. The entire town had just frozen…or died. idk what so…
We freaked out and I drove the hell outta Salem and haven’t gone back since. I have no idea what’s up w/ that town and I don’t have any intention of ever finding out.
All I know is that I have a lot of ghost and other stories which I don’t readily tell, but I saw this story about a haunting in Salem and had to comment. I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a lot more activity in Salem than just this and the keyboard story (which btw is poltergeist activity and would scare the sh*t outta me, I’d have to move immediately)

HEello,I have know the people that lived on that street for many long years. My sister lived in one house that was torn down back in the 70’s. Then she moved next door to 300 w. Main. S.T. Next to her beside the post office lived Mr. perrine and his sister. Mr. perrine had owned that house a very long time. He was a lawyer and a very kind man. Mr. Perrine became ill and moved with his sister to Fla. in the 90’s. Where he passed away. My sister lived at 300 W. Main St. for many many years. She was a preacher and there was very weird happening at her home and many people saw things there. A great friend shot his wife and killed his self while he was renting a room from my sister. There are spirits, gghosts, some people don’t encounter them. Any way, my sister’s home was relocated and is now concited as a historical home in Salem. I know a lot about those homes on that block. And what i know is truth and people can believe or now. But I say, yes, all 5 houses that was there was haunted.. Blessings

I live about 60 miles from salem and I was wondering if anyone knows how long ago the story was suppose to have taken place?
I live in Patrick County, virginia and my house was a small house about 75 years old when I bought it. It has been completely revamped and added onto. My house had always made funny noises, but I blamed it on it’s age and settling and such. I was telling some ladies from my church that sometimes my house gave me the “willies” at the noises it made, when one of the other ladies kinda laughed, I asked if she was laughing at my fright. She said there was no need to be scared because the noises in my house were probably her husbands grandfather. As fate would have it, her husbands grandfather fell dead in my kitchen many years ago, probably in the 40s or 50s. I asked if he was nice and she said he was a very nice man. This revelation caused my mother-in-law to by one of those psycic books by Sylvia Brown from Montel and she said that we were suppose to tell the guy he was dead and encourage him to “cross-over”, but my husband thinks he gives the house character and wants him to stay (if he’s really there). We’ve not had anything other than strange winds, and severe floor walking, a few weird lights and reflections in the mirror, and several quick seconds where we thought we may have seen something in a haze. Lastly, we’ve experienced items being hidden and returned, and I’ve passed that off as my own fault whenever possible, just to keep my sanity while living here. The guy that owned the house before me still lives in my neightborhood, but i’m afraid he’ll think I’m nuts if I mention this to him. My dad has had similar experiences in his house, but he built his house so how could it be haunted? His property has a graveyard, but not near the house. To my knowledge there wasn’t another structure on his land, so maybe he and I both have overactive imaginations. Any thoughts?

Hello, I have had experiences with spirits, hauntings, psychic abilities all my life. I do know that my sister’s house that was located on Main St. in SALEM,VA. was haunted and many christain exorists went there. A very close family friend murdered his self there back in the 1990’s. Most things, my sister who was an ordained minister , would not tell me that went on. That house has been moved and is now a historial home in Salem. I lived with my family in a house at 3906 MAINE AVE. N.W in ROANOKE,VA back from 1972 until 16 yrs later. I had visits from two eldery ladies, they would come and stand by my bed and just watch me. I was never afraid of them but they appeared to be a little scared as one lady stood behind the other. My sister told me to never reach out to touch them. I was never afraid, I would just lay and look at them and tell them we were a good family and they were safe! When we moved I felt sad that we had to leave them and to this day i wonder if all the people that moved in the house ever saw them. I do know from my best friend that lives next door that the people that would move in would never stay long! We loved living there but moved to the lake. Yet we miss it back there. That was home.I do know that a teacher passed away there and her husband murdered his self . There was still a place in the wall. I have lived in several places that things like this have happened. Some things that wasn’t good. I know what I and my family have seen and witnessed. Back to my sister’s house at 300 W. MAIN ST. in SALEM, VA. A girl that came by with a family friend was terrified as she had never saw a pic. or saw my sister’s husband, but as she went into the kitchen, she was shocked to see him setting there talking to their yellow parakeet. She had no idea of what type cloths he wore or any thing yet she described him to a tee. And he just looked up at her and smiled. I don’t know if he is still there or if he went to HEAVEN as my sister left this world july 8th,2007 and we know she comes and visits. As too many things have been shown to us. Just think of all the deminsions that can be.. Blessings!!

Three weeks after my birth in 1958, my Great Uncle passed away in his little house on Water St. in Ithaca, WI. He had seen me one time before he passed and apparently was so happy that my parents had another boy that he said he would watch over me throughout my lifetime. When I was seven years old, my family lived in a small three bedroom house in southern Wisconsin my father had built in 1962. Like other families of the time, all the boys (there were four of us) shared a king size bed in one bedroom and our little sister had her own room. One night, I awoke with the feeling of being watched. I looked toward the foot of the bed and saw an old man in a red flannel shirt and overalls with snow white hair just standing there looking at me. He had a very peaceful look on his face and although he said nothing, I knew he was telling me I was safe. I was so startled by what I saw, that I pulled the covers over my head. After a few seconds, I looked again and he was gone. Several years later in Flagstaff, AZ, I worked with a couple of architects in an office on the third floor of the old Weatherford Hotel on LeRoux St. One afternoon as I was finishing up my lunch, I spun around on my chair and caught a glimpse of the same old man in a french door leading to the hallway outside of the office. He looked the same as he did years before. Just as quickly, he was gone. I asked my dad if he had any idea who it could be after telling him of my two encounters with the old man. He told me from the description I gave him, that it was my Great Uncle Herman. I have not seen him since but would invite the opportunity to see him again.

About 4 years ago I was asleep in bed, and I woke up with a woman (who looked like ma mother) walk past me. It was kinda blurry..maybe jus because I had jus woken up. And I said ma mothers name. And when she didnt answer I got out of ma bed. And she was no where. I looked outside to see if she had walked out the house, and she wasnt there. I looked at the clock and ma mom had been gone for about an hour by then, to go to work. I was scared but I jus went in the living room and ate ma breakfast.
Well Ill say about 2 years later I moved out and moved back in with ma mother, and ma grandmother was living there, and she had moved into ma room while I was gone. I was telling her this story about ma room (thinking I could scare her out of ma old room to get it back haha) and while I was telling her this..she turned a pale color, and I asked what was wrong, and she had said she seen the same woman. I had seen the woman walk past the closet, exacly where ma grandmother had seen her. She said the woman looked like mom.
Ma mother was also at the end of the hallway, and at the other end was the bathroom, the door was open, and there was a mirror on the wall..so you can stand at the end of the hall and see yourself in the mirror. Well ma mother was at the end of the hall so jus happened to glance in the mirror and saw a man standing behind her, she looked behind her and there was no one, and then the looked back into the mirror was he as still there, so needless to say she ran outside lol. But thats all the ghost experiences ive had. But I would love to have more.
