Manresa Castle
During the 1800s, this building was used to house many monks. One of these monks became disenchanted with society and himself, and thus committed suicide. It is said that the sound of moans and chains may be heard in the tower where the suicide occurred. Other reported hauntings include eerie sounds in the night, lights turning on and off, windows opening and closing, and the sighting of an entity throughout the house.

Dear Desiree,
My fellow colleage and I feel that there is no way the after life would remain here to haunt the living. To prove this we propose that someone sets us up in a room for a night. Honesty will always remain our true virtrue, however we are very confident that the fear and “supposed hauntings” are self inflicted and that the actual possibility of a ghost sighting happen then we would feel more than happy to report the encounter. Please contact us.

My wife and I stayed at Manresa Castle for our honeymoon in 1981. At the time we had no information about any hauntings. We had stayed two nights in the “Honeymoon Suite” (I think it’s room 202) and then one night in 302 to take advantage of the view. I awoke in the middle of the night and investigated sounds in the tower area of the room. It sounded as if there was someone in the room. I found and heard nothing further.
Later, I saw a vignette on a kid’s show about that room being haunted. While I don’t believe that I have experienced a “haunting,” it is enough to be curious about.

Hello There Manresa Castle Fan’s,
I don’t intend to hurt your feelings folks but The historic Port Townsends Manresa Castle Is not haunted It is just an old Beautiful landmark to visit and Have the time of your life, Plus the Hotels staff are very friendly people though and I’ve been going to that Manresa place for 12 years now since 1994 august 26th Well I was 16 years old when I first stayed over night at the Castle back then when Roger O’ Connor was the General Manager and Rhonda Myhre Is the head Manager of the Dining room, It is truly Amazing that the Manresa Castle Is soooo HUGE inperson and The NEW owner Is Preston Massey he seems to be doing an Excellent job at keeping the business of his hotel open to the General Public and That place will NEVER be remodelled inside because there Is a lot of original history In the beauitful historical palace.

hey all,
I used to live about 2 blocks from Manresa Castle, me and my brother used to go over there at night to see if it was hunted. But we never saw or heard anything. It’s used to be a way to scare the little kids at the grade school near there but that is all.
Also I’ve never heard this story about the monks. The Story I’ve always heard is that the Castle was built by a rich man in the 1800s for his wife as a wedding present. The woman didn’t want to marry this man but was forced to and after the marrage she jumped out of one of the towers in the Castle, and that to this day on some night you can see her jump to her death out of the tower.
That is the story I always heard, I know what you think but I don’t belive it.
Belive what you want
Shane,

i have been the Manresa and it s a wonderful place to stay , I believe that it is haunted , when i went to the castle its had a errie feeling to it as a entered the castle. I heard of the stories , i went into the room that the woman who commited sucide from. I seemed normal , not cold or errie, just normal. I went outside in front of the castle and from the tower that she ended her life from , she was supposably standing in that window, as what my twin sister said. Manaresa is a beautiful place to stay, and the staff are very nice people , I hope to go back there soon.

Andie:I have been to the castle. My ex told me that it was a haunting experience, so I visited. When I arrived, I saw a boy in burnt clothing looking down at me from the top window. As I walked in I had a bad feeling. I asked the hotel manager if the place was truly haunted. She told me the story of when the castle burned down. I asked her if I could explore the castle and she said yes. As I went to the room which the boy was in, I found out that the room was untouched. Just then I realized that he could have been burned down with Menresa Castle. I have been told that room 202 was the haunted room. That is where someone commited sucide and people have experienced the strangest things such as feeling physical contact with another person when no one was there. Some may say that this castle is not haunted… I believe it is.
Sammy: Trust me when I say that it could very well be haunted. I’ve had my fair share of paranormal experiences. I know you think I’m crazy, but I would not be the person you expect would say this. I’m very scientifical. However, a life time of these experiences have taught me to think otherwise. You may say there is no proof of ghosts and such, but there is also no proof against them. You can’t just say it isn’t real because you can’t see or feel it. Or hear it. Well, yes, sometimes you can. But if that were true, air, love, happiness, and other emotions obviously would not exist. So ha. Take that. Thanks fo reading this. If you disagree… well, that’s your problem, not mine… sucker.

My family visited the castle two years ago for my husband’s birthday, and spent the weekend there in room 202. We heard all the haunting stories, have read the book that the castle is featured in, and then were very pleased to find ourselves having experiences as well. When we first arrived to the room, the television would not turn on; and after much fiddling and fussing, no amount of our attempts could get that darn thing to go on. We switched it off, and decided to do some sight-seeing in town, and before we left the room, the TV came on by itself. When we went sight-seeing, we returned to the room to find a very strong, overpowering smell of smoke in the bathroom. There were no windows in the bathroom, and the room’s only windows were closed. After much investigation and discussing with the staff whether that scent could be coming from a smoking guest outside or perhaps smoking in one of the rooms, they assured us that was not the case. They also told us that other guests had reported the same thing in that room. My husband, my mother and I went out again that evening for drinks, and my daughter stayed in the room to shower and get ready for bed. While we were gone, she heard voices out in the main room while she was in the bathroom, as if the television were on or we had returned, but when she came out, no one was there, and the TV was off. Finally, during the night, my husband awoke to a heavy weight sitting directly on his side of the bed, as if someone had sat down next to him and was pulling his covers tightly. When he sat up, the sensation disappeared. I awoke that night to the sound of footsteps and voices in the room. So believe what you want; but we are ALL convinced that Manresa Castle is indeed haunted, and we were thrilled to have been lucky enough to experience it ourselves! We absolutely LOVE the place!

hey, i’ve been to the castle like the rest of you and we took pics of my mom in one of the rooms. When we got the pics back we were surprised because one of them came back with something we cant quite explain. My mom works with a lady who used to work at Manresa and she has a really cool/creepy story. It goes kinda like this: “I was cleaning one of the rooms with my co-worker and all of the sudden, this strong, strong lavender smell came. it was so strong it almost made you sick to your stomach. We threw the sheets down the shoot thinking that perfume from the last person was still on them. We went about 2 floors down and cleaned a different bed. The smell was gone for a while, my guess was about a couple minutes. Then all of the sudden it was back.” i dont know about you but that just gives me goosebumps.
believe what you want, but there is deffenatly something up with the castle.

Wow this is all soo cool.. I just got home from Port Townsend.. I was over there for about 2 weeks, and yes, I did go and visit the castle I did not go into it but i drove by it.. While I was driving.. I was excited but surprised to see a figure of a boy who looked like he was 10 11 or 12, in one of the windows right above the side entrance on the right side.. he was wearing dark brown and torn clothing, and he looked really serious he watched our car until we turned the block, and something about the boy made me feel really uncomfortable… it just gave me an eerie feeling?… when we went back by the window I exspecially looked for him and he was nowhere to be seen.
I Believe that the castles are haunted, im hopefully waiting to spend the night there!
Always,
Emily

Hmmm – well in my opinion no one should be closed minded, and you never know what will happen … Jon and I stayed in room 204 of Manresa`s Castle
I do know that our windows were impossible to open and it was dreadfully hot BUT it was an incredible place. I decided to stitch abit then later I put the stitching down on the bench in front of the bed…. I turned and walked away and when I got about 4 steps away all of my stitching made a thud as it hit the floor…. there is no way at all that it should have fallen it was dead center on the bench and heavy enough to have stayed there…. We also passed room 202 in the morning and before even knowing the room was the haunted room we both felt an energy and said to each other that that was the room ….
Try it – it is worth it … and if you dont at all believe in hauntings make your way to the other end of town to Fort Warden and spend the night – now that should send a chill up anyones spine!! Personally even in the day it has its moments!!! Laura in Machias

I’ve heard a lot of different things about Manresa Castle over the years and have an interesting tale to tell. My ex-wife and I stayed there six years ago during the off season. It was a very unique experience because we were the only guests in the entire hotel. We stayed up all night “ghost hunting,” but weren’t really surprised when we failed to find any ghosts. My ex-wife even dared me to go streaking buck naked through the various floors of the castle, which I did while she videotaped me. Eventually we tried to go to sleep, but were immediately awakened by the sound of curiously loud footfalls coming down the hallway. We happened to be in one of the nicer suites. In fact, it was right next door to the suite where the bride had allegedly committed suicide all those years ago. In any case, these footsteps lead right up to our door and stopped suddenly. My ex and I looked at each other, thinking that perhaps the night clerk needed to tell us something. When we went to the door, there was no one in sight, and we hadn’t heard anybody walking away. A little bit later around 5:00 a.m., we were both rudely startled from a sound sleep by a persistent and very loud pounding noise coming from the wall right next to our bed. We were both pretty unnerved, but went to investigate anyway. Actually, I think I ended up doing the investigation by myself since my ex was too scared to get out of bed. Anyway, once again there was no one there. Now, does this mean the castle is haunted? I sure hope so, because it’s a lot more fun to believe that it is. Just remember that regardless of what anyone says, this really happened to us during our stay inside the Manresa Castle one cold February morning in 2000.

Sorry to burst everyones bubble but it’s room 306 not 202. The womans name was Kate Eisenbeis and she commited suicide by jumping out of a third story window after recieving news that her husband was lost at sea. Ironically that was not true and upon his return he was greeted not by his queen buy by an empty castle, the same castle he built for his beloved queen who was now gone. Striken with grief he left the castle to rot. After that it lay vacant for many years until one day it was sold, remodled, and converted into a finishing school for training preists. One night for whatever reason one of the head priests hung himself from the roof support beam of the southwest turret. Sometime after that the Castle was converted into a Hotel and since then it has been subject to much speculation. Albeit a very beautiful building and a cozy stay my own experience there will always have me asking myself did I really see that, or was it my imagination. I seriously doubt anyone who dismisses the mystery surrounding this place has ever been there.

In 2005, my mother, aunt, two cousins, and I stayed in the Tower Room of Manresa Castle. It was really cool to walk around and think about all the stuff that could have happened and spook yourself out and that was most of the fun of Manresa Castle. Until we all went to sleep. All night I heard whispering. It sounded like two or three people whispering at once, but I couldn’t understand what they were saying. At first I thought it was the rest of my family but when I woke up the next morning I asked them and they all said they weren’t talking. Except my cousin who slept in the master bedroom said she heard the whispering too around the same time I did. My aunt, who is really skeptical about ghosts, said that someone shook her shoulder to the point where she woke up, but when she rolled over she didnt see anyone/thing and my cousin who was sharing the bed with her was asleep. The thing was, I wasn’t really afraid when all this was happening. It was more of an excited comfort, even though I know no one in my family was creating this.

There is someone on the top floor. If you don’t believe then grab your balls and go and see for yourself. Then try to tell everyone you don’t believe. Just because it’s not someone from the stories, it doesn’t’ mean that the land itself doesn’t have something on it.

Charles died in 1902 and Kate remarried a few years later. The Castle was left empty for almost 20 years except for a caretaker
I guess those are the people that built the castle and everyone keeps saying the wife is the one who killed herself by jumping out of the tower. Where is this info comeing from? I would like to read about it!
please post the facts……thankyou

I do believe that “Manresa Castle” is haunted because my friend and her family went for a little vacation in “Manresa Castle”. My friend said that when my friend and her sister went to a little store she found a book about haunted biuldings in Washington and they found that the hotel that they where staying in was huanted. Later that night, my friend recals hearing strang clanking noises in the tower then she said that she heard the doors opening and closing.
The next day, her fathers shoe was on top of the light fixture. Her father said “I didnt do that!”. Usually her father can do a joke but say he didnt do it, but he was being serouse about it.Through that whole day my friend didnt want to stay a Manresa Castle anymore, but we all still think its haunted……

My husband and I stayed there in ‘05 in the turret suite on the 3rd floor. Being not of suspicious/paranoid heart, I went with a free mind. The room itself is gorgeous, elegant antiques fill a very spacious area and the view is to die for (no pun intended). It was a very hot day so we turned on an oscillating fan on a table which kept turning itself off. Now, I realize that to say a “ghost” did it would be the fun thing to say but my intellect calls faulty wiring. That being said, what I will at the very least question is the noctural activity emanating from the upstairs region above our bed. We hardly slept at all, due to footsteps (mostly) and whispering although we could not make out any distinct words. In the morning I inquired at the front desk if there were perhaps workers laboring during the night, which of course, there was not. Overall, I would say that the Manresa is a gorgeous place, the food in the restaurant was outstanding and the city of Port Townsend is definite must-see. Would I stay at Manresa again? Probably not, the feeling I got (more so in the froyer area of the lobby) was just creepy. Is it haunted? Whose to say, I’ll say what I’ve always said; best to be afraid of the people who ARE alive, not the dead ones!

Port Townsend has lots of ghostly activity for hunters to check out. Both the Manresa Castle and the Palace Hotel have kept a file of guests reports in their own handriting that you can ask to view. Some of the comments are down right creepy. The Rothschild House is also haunted and is now a museum that you can explore. Check out the Bead shop next to the Palace Hotel, too and the Fort has its own list of hauntings!
Happy hunting!

As I was researching the haunting at Manresa Castle I ran into an article in the Seattle Weekly. Apparently a woman reporter warmed up to the bartender enough to get the real story of what had happened to the priest and the wife. According to the reporter all the stories were made up. The bartender had told her that there were so many people asking if the castle was haunted he made an up a colorful tail to get them to stop bugging him. Then the reporter went on to say that she herself had a run in with the paranormal that night. As she was sleeping in room 202 (not sure of the room number) the reporter awoke to something leaning her hair in a forceful manner.
On August 17 2007 Northwest Paranormal Investigation Agency (NWPIA.com) stayed the night in the second floor tower room. It was about 11:00pm when we fell asleep but the IR cam, voice recorder and the led EMF reader were still running. The next morning we woke up packed everything up and headed home a little upset that we couldn’t stay awake longer and finish the investigation. Unfortunately we didn’t get any funny feelings that night at all, until my wife had mentioned that on the way to the bathroom around 3:00am the EMF reader was in the red and flashing. So after her telling me that I was eager to get home and view the tapes. I’m not kidding when I tell you that as I was listening to the recordings I heard the first of four EVP’s. The first was a drawn out heeellllloooooooo the second was very unnerving. The voice was of a little boy saying “I’m sick…no”. The third and fourth were together. It was a very dark whisper “I’m afraid” six seconds after that was “I’m doomed”. If you don’t believe me you can check them out at nwpia.com you’ll have to give me a little time to post them.
Thanks
Bert

First off. Manresa castle is in Port Townsend Washington, not Maltby, wherever that might be.
The Manresa and the Palace hotel are both haunted and have been for some time. Do your history homework and check out why, even before the Victorian houses it was home to Native Americans. And last but certainly not least, if you are not interested in ghosts and hauntings, why are you here? Get a life!

My exboyfriend and I stayed at the castle about 2 years ago. It definetly gave me a creepy feeling. We went expecting to be totally scared to death, but it just wasn’t the case. After we checked in, we went out for drinks and came back and decided to roam the halls. We never heard or experienced anything. One weird thing that did happen was the next morning when we were getting ready to leave, I was out in the bedroom part and I was curling my hair, and he was in the shower, I heard the water stop, and I thought “boy, that was a quick shower.” Then it started again. That happened a few more times. When we got in the car and was driving away, I asked him why he kept turning the water on and off, and he said he didn’t it kept shutting off and on, and it was starting to tick him off. Who knows?

I never use to believe in ghosts until something happened to me. I have never stayed at the castle but every other year my family has a reunion at Fort Warden and we stay in the old Officer’s houses. They always gave me a creepy feeling and I just thought it was because the were old, but about 4 years ago I was sharing the master bedroom with my cousin, the room had a bathroom and sometime during the middle of the night I woke up facing the bathroom and I saw this figure of an old soldier standing in front of me. I was so freaked out but I thought OK this is not happening just turn around and go back to sleep. So I turned around and shut my eyes and tryed to pretend it wasn’t there. Which worked for about 10 seconds until I felt a very cold sensation go right though the middle of my body like the ghost walked right though me. I was so freaked out I would not open my eyes for the rest of the night. We get the same house every time and to this day I will not sleep in that room.
Also this past year my brother went up there to explore and heard weird footstep in the old military bunker.
I know Fort Warden is haunted!!

im watching the abc family channel right now…a show called scariest places on earth and the Manresa Castle was on their list!…a young man who stayed there in room 305 or 307 as a young boy while his parents stayed in room 306 went back with his 2 friends who each spent the night in a different room to investigate the feeling of someone setting down on the bed with him as a child and as a child he said he also felt a choking sensation…anyway he set up cameras and computers in the attic and watched his 2 friends sleep through the night…only they both were woken during the night and were frightend so bad they left in the middle of the night….when they looked back at the thermal camera there was a huge thermal (red) moving spot headed towards the bed the girl was sleeping in when she said she felt as if someone sat on the bed with her and then she ran out of the room…so i am now curious and i hope to check it out for myself one day since im not too far from there…i have had 3 other paranormal events occur in my life from age 17 to 22 i am now 23 anyway i have seen with my own eyes so i beleive i have a good chance of seeing something at Manresa

I believe that the hotel is haunted. I know a young woman (a reliable source) who used to be a housekeeper at the Manresa castle who quit after working with another housekeeper in a room where they had just made up the beds & hung fresh towels then went outside of the room into the hallway to fetch toiletries and trash bags and came back in the room to find the beds unmade and the towels on the floor, in addition they both reported feeling a very cold chill upon rentering the room. Neither of them had gone far enough from the room entrance to allow someone else to slip in and do that!

My wife and I stayed at the Manresa Castle for 2 nights back in 1989. I do not remember our room number but our room was at the end of the hall on the 3rd floor. We did not know of the haunted reputation of the hotel before our stay there but joked about the possibility of ghosts being there while walking the grounds around the hotel and from the creepy sounds that we heard in the hotel. Anyways, after our 2 day stay, we were getting ready to leave our room to checkout and I had our luggage in hand and had opened the room door when my wife’s sister called. The phone was next to a couch right near the door. I was hoping it would be a quick call so I left the door open and sat next to my wife as she was talking to her sister. During the conversation with her sister, my wife mentioned that we had gotten a weird vibe from the hotel and she joked about it being haunted. Right at that exact moment the door, which had been fully open, slammed shut. As you can imagine, we both looked at each other in amazement. I then proceeded to open the door to see if anyone was around that could have caused the door to shut. No one was around! We proceeded to check out and didn’t say a word to the hotel staff. About a month later we were watching this TV show about ghosts and one of the stories was about the haunted Manresa Castle. Unbelievable!

My family and I go there frequently. We are a fledgling paranormal group. My daughter is why I got interested in it, she insisted that there was a 4 to 6 year old girl in the shower stall of room 302 (she was about 3-1/2 yrs old at the time). She played and fed her friend there. We made mention of this little girl that my daughter calls [Chawanna] to the staff and manager(Preston), they mentioned that in the past people have said that they heard a child crying but none were ever found. About a year or 2 later, MR. Eisenbeise’ (the original builder) mosoleum lid broke and while reperations were made, people found a mysterious little girl’s casket on his coffin (verifyiable by local newspaper records). Nobody of his remaining family has any idea who she might be, but my daughter said Chawanna’s mommy used to cook and clean stuff like that for Chawanna’s dad. Well my conclusion was simple (nonverified as yet). You can come up with your own conclusion. But that is just one simple thing. We have had other unanswerable things that have happened but we take it as fun after all no one is ever hurt there just saying hi. And as for the burned boy, Manresa has never been burned, as far as any records show, so lets keep it that way NO SMOKING in it please. But the hospital across the street did burn down with the 3rd class citizens in it and that could explain the boy. Ghosts’ can move around a bit depending on the type of haunt that they are. We even have a few pic’s with something strange in them that try as might couldn’t debunk. We try to always remain professional in our research and use facts based in reality not fantasy. Is Manresa haunted? Good question and that depends on each persons reality/perspective of the world about them. We do not suscribe to convince all that ghosts’ do or do not exist. We genuinely enjoy our stays at the Castle and give a big shout out to all the staff!! Also we recommend to those of you who do believe unusual things have happened to you there, remember this. If whatever you believe is there was going to hurt anyone, it would already have happened! So go and enjoy yourselves there and don’t be afraid of anything. Also we highly recommend to folks that before one try’s to say something about a place, please review all available history so you don’t sound doofy explaing things that makes no sense historicly as recorded!
If you’d like to contact us for any reason please write to liberty34@hotmail.com and refer to Manresa or any other thing you’d like to share in the paranormal realm. Please no mass emailings or advertisements!! Thanx :=)Tim, Donna and Isabella…SKEPTICAL 2, Paranormal researchers

My fiance and I stayed at Manresa Castle last weekend on Nov.15 for my birthday. I had only heard some stories of the priest who supposidly hung himself above the 3rd floor and the girl “kate” who threw herself out the window of 302 or 306. I was fortunate enough to have my own experience. While eating dinner I went to use the ladies restroom. Upon entering I felt like someone was in there, I didnt really think anything of it and a quick glance at the stalls proved that no one but me was there. Besides my fiance and I were the only hotel guests besides two women who had gone up to bed 45 minutes before. While in the stall I had trouble getting the lock closed but was able to get it enough to stay closed. After a moment I head someone else fumbling with the lock in a stall near mine. As soon as I noticed the noise my own stall door opened in on me. I leaned forward to close it and heard someone breathing heavily, I stopped breathing myself to be sure that it wasnt my own breath I was hearing. When I did so I continued to hear the breathing, followed by a few more clicks of someone struggling with the lock. I brushed it off, sure that another women had come into the restroom. But when I exited the stall there was still no one but me in the restroom. Later that night we went back up to our room which was on the 3rd floor, I saw someones shadow turning down the hall we were on our way too (and no it was not our own shadow because it was going to opposite way ours were) When we turned the corner toward our room there was no one there and we discovered the next day that there were in fact no other guests staying on the 3rd floor that night. Believe what you will but I honestly believe Manresa Castle is haunted. Although it was a beautiful place, and I plan to go back as often as I can. We had a wonderful time.

My boyfriend and I just stayed in Room 302 a couple of weeks ago (March 2008). My boyfriend had heard the “haunted” rumors and had wanted to go stay in the tower for many years, so I took him for his birthday. I have never believed in ghosts or spirits, as I’m a very logical person (I am a math teacher at a college) and feel like I’d have to see it to believe it. Well, the castle is very beautiful and if you appreciate old things as I do, you will love it. Room 302 is gorgeous, and would never seem to be haunted during the day. Things were fine until I went to sleep. We slept in the main room and there’s a small bedroom off the main room that has the bathroom attached to it. When I was asleep, I had a terrifying dream that I was very scared in the bed and I was trying to reach my boyfriend lying behind me but something was holding my arms up above him, and wouldn’t let me touch him to wake him no matter what I tried. I woke up and then laying there heard noises in the smaller bedroom. It sounded like someone was moving around in there near the wall that goes to the bathroom. I was so scared that I woke my boyfriend up and had him turn of all the lights. I was ready to get out of there anytime. I was thinking I should sleep in the hallway or the lobby where it was light (stupid huh?). I was scared to move and then eventually fell asleep finally. I’m still not sure what happened that night; all I know is that it was very scary to me. Overall it is a very nice place to stay… my parents want to stay in the same room with us in July so I’ll keep you posted! Heidi

Valentine’s Weekend 2008 my sweetheart and I stayed in the Manresa Castle. I grew up around Port Townsend and heard that it was haunted so I wanted to stay there SO bad. I have never seen anything paranormal before but was hoping to see something when there for the night. I heard noises like someone was walking above us shortly after 4pm-and we were on the 3rd floor so I don’t know how that would be possible. My mom told me that she knew someone who fell down the front stairs of the castle and broke several ribs. Apparantly his wife got injured on the same trip also. My honey fell UP the stairs when we first arrived-creepy. I have “feelings” about places and felt something strange on the second floor of the castle-it was very cold right there also. We are going back for his birthday in a couple weeks and we are going to stay in the room located right under the tower (where the priest supposidly hung himself.) we’ll see what happens but that castle is true beauty and i LOVE staying there!!!! Rooms are a little small but it’s a fun time.

My step-dad travels a lot on business, and stayed in Manresa Castle a few years back while having a meeting in Port Townsend. He stayed in the third floor room where (apparently) the wife of the person who owned the castle way back when committed suicide by jumping out of the window in the room my dad stayed in. After the suicide, the husband hung himself in the attic. Anyway, my dad said at around like 9 or so, the lights in his room went out. After flipping the switches a few times, he called the front desk and had someone go check the breakers. At this point my dad had no idea about the suicide or anything, so he thought it was just an electrical problem. Later, the front desk told him that they couldn’t find any problems with the breakers or electrical box, and didn’t know why the lights had gone out, and that it hadn’t happened to any of the other rooms. He was close to going to bed anyway so he just went to sleep with there being no working lights still. The lights worked fine by the next morning however, and the front desk later told him that the particular room he stayed in had been where the lady committed suicide and there had been strange things that happened in that room in the past. After this, my dad bought a book that was being sold in the lobby that tells about the place and it’s infamous hauntings, and there was even a tv crew that came the day my dad was leaving to film for a show (I’m not sure what channel it was for though).

My wife said “oh what was that”? I told her jocking
“It must be haunted”
My sife did not like this subject so she said “shut up and go to sleep”
We forgot about it till e few years latter while I was watching the travel channel, it was about the most haunted places in the NW and they were 3 places Fort of vancouver, Oregon coast light houce and sure enough the castle, I called my wife to watch it
It was so creepy we could not believe it.

My friends and I stayed the night at Manresa Castle on April 19, 2008. It was my birthday celebration and I had taken a picture of my friend and the top of the attic stairs. There was an orb above her head. She was dressed in a sheet with two eyes cut in to it. We stayed in room 302 and only heard a couple of bangs on the digital recorder. We also heard the heater going and my snoring. I was very excited to have an opportunity to stay there. I only wish my friend would have been more serious about our quest for ghost hunting. I would do it again. Only the next time I would like to have access to the attic.

My family and I are a year new to the State of Washington. I am and always will believe in the supernatural. As I have also had loads of experiences with those who have passed before my birth and I was never shown any photographs of them told my own mother what this person looked like upon visiting me. She is a sensitive as am I. I feel and hear them. I am only capable of seeing them through my peripheral vision. I have asked the “older” locals about the castle, at least those who would talk about the hauntings there. And a lot were about the lady killing herself, the castle burning down and of the monks. Many told me the memories of the place was mint to be kept as they were, only memories. My first paranormal experience was on a farm that was built in the 1800s. In 1920, the couple who resided there at the time were out in the barn when they smelled smoke. The attic was on fire. He called all the locals he could to come help put it out. One young man about 16 at the time lost his life in the fire. The fire was so hot it caused the resident to loose a great deal of his hearing. When we first rented this house in 1976 I was five. The only thing he told us was the attic had been rebuilt but a good many of the studs were still not stable to walk on. My two brothers and I thought this was said to keep us out. Which when the folks were gone we didn’t exactly listen. One day my eldest brother and I were out in the garden doing chores while my other brother was being rushed to the ER due to 2000 hornet stings, we heard “Fire, Fire, the house is on fire!” My eldest brother and I looked puzzled as we were the only two home. We looked up and sure enough there was smoke pouring out of the attic and a young man standing there screaming. I was told to stay put, while my brother went in to see what was going on and find out how that man got into our home since there were no neighbors who lived closer than a mile away from us. We lived way out in the middle of no where so to speak. My brother went in and didn’t come out. The smoke was getting blacker and thicker. I ran in, headed up the stairs, felt the coldest cold that no winter anywhere could get so cold, smelt and heard the fire, seen my brother under his bed as white as white can get. No sooner did this start to happen it ended. No fire, no smoke and no young man. Our Landlord mentioned any of this to our parents or to us kids. It was such a bad incident he never spoke of it. We were told years later about it by his brother. It was their baby brother who lost his life in that fire. For things to happen that we see in our life that took place long before our birth, are always told it’s implanted in our minds by stories others tell. How can this be so when we witness things others refuse to talk about and it happened before our birth? Believe in what you want. I have had my share of experiences to say I believe. Because these things are there and they are real. Things I should not have knowledge of but I do and I did not gain them from other people telling me. I went to the people and asked about these things in which I should never have known about. There are your believers and there are your doubters. We are a world of the mixed. There are those who tray and tell us they are all demons trying to scare us and confuse us.I don’t believe in that. Demons are here to take us and harm us. The experiences I have had I have felt no fear. I embrace my gift. All the women in my family have a paranormal gift. Now my next to the last daughter is an extreme sensitive who can see in direct sight, feel and hear spirits. She too embraces her gift and I tell her not to let her gift run her life but needs to run it herself.

Dear Fellow Writers,
I worked for Manresa Castle several years ago, I never beleived the stories and was never into the whole ghost thing, The place made a believer out of me. I have finally in the last few years been able to talk about it, but it sent me running from the top floor down the stairs and out the front door never to step foot back in there, I even had them mail me my last pay check. I will have to say the place is very beautiful and has a old charm to it. The smell is very vintage,(lovely) and if the ghost stories don’t bother you or if you are imuned to the bumps in the night. Then you will love your stay there. This house/hotel, is very attractive,if your really into old things, you could get lost in the history, the decor, and the life in that area. Any way I don’t know how far fetched the stories have gotten, but yes the monk hung himself in the tower, yes a lady committed scuicide, no it didn’t burn, the hospital next door did. A wide variaty of things have happened there, from doors closing the wrong way, names whispered in your ear when no one is there but you, the jacuzzi
filling with water and the door closes and won’t open, make your bed and it looks like someone is laying on it but no one is there, a ghost, moans, cries, ect…. It doesn’t happen to everyone but it does definatly happen!!!!!

just a quick up date on this hotel.actualy the hotel that use to stand across the main road and up from the castle. the hotel that every one refers to have burned down was not manresa but the original builder of manresa did build another hotel that was huge compared to manresa. thats the hotel that burned down, not manresa,at that time manresa was mr eisenbeis family home, when you get to manresa you will find 2 portraits with the picture of that structure in them, the staff will be happy to show those 2 you one is to the right of check in desk the other is down the hall on the right. yes it is fun to ghost hunt maybe you can add to the ghost stories your own fun adventure.

My best friend and I, and our two daughters, stayed at Manresa Castle just a few nights ago, in the top tower room – room 302. It was a belated Mother’s Day present from my daughter. (The staff is incredibly friendly, and the food is great!) We checked with the desk clerk before taking pictures to be sure we wouldn’t be disturbing any other guests, but spent most of our time out in the courtyard. Interior pictures showed nothing unusual, but between three of us we took nearly 200 pictures out there, and the orbs that showed up in them were amazing. Consecutive shots showed some orbs moving forward to back, then at angles, and one pic of the two daughters has a ‘mist’ above their hands. It seemed that the happier we were the more orbs in the pics – and they were brighter, too when the girls were dancing around and laughing. We later came to the conclusion that the ’spirits’ had chosen to come out and ‘play’ in the courtyard with us rather than stay in the quiet interior of the castle

live now. I have been in before, never staying all night, but am a believer

negative, and would encourage any one to experience what ever it is they are

I was there this weekend on jan 9-11-09 in room 302 we had a wonderful time my daughter and her friend were in bed by 10:00, and out by 11:00. the paopla below us complained that there were children running up and down the hall till 11:30 and I was standing there when they made complaint and I told them my kids were in the room by 9:45 and asleep by 11:00 so it was not them (no other children in castle except for 2 girls in cottages and they were with there mom so not them)but when I told those people that what they sed was not true for they were sleeping by 11:00 and in our room no later then 9:45, they wrote an E-mail to the owner/manager that they had an awfull night and running in the hall till 10:30 still not proper time for my kids.they were in our room from 9:45 0n. later that evening my husband told me that he could hear 2 young children playing on the 2nd floor and he could not see them but he heard laughter and voices. I now beleive because of my 2 girls and the other 2 girls playing in the ballroom caused the children of the eisenbeis family to become active for my daughter sed she could see the little girl ghost named “chawanna”and they wanted to play as well and so I am sure thats what the jerk people herd and did not realize they had there own ghost encounters.after all they bought the ghost stiry books in the lobby.May be they were just hoping for a free night. I stayed the night at Manresa Castle with my boyfriend for our 2 year anniversary, we will in Sequim, the next town over, and I LOVE ghost stories, a total believer, I mean, my after life goal is to become a ghost, hahaha. So anyways, we stayed in the room directly above the door closest to the tower, I don’t remember what number it was. So when we got in the room, the phone in there was unplugged, we thought ‘weird’, but didn’t think anything of it. The room and the whole place seemed pretty normal. As much as I’d love to believe in ghosts and hauntings, I need some significant proof. So time went on, and the heater placement in the bathroom is rediculous by the way, it’s directly on the toilet, so don’t turn it on if you need to be able to sit down in oder to pee, haha. I took a ton of pictures in the room, nothing showed to be abnormal in any way. But when we plugged the phone in to call the dining room place to get something, when he hung up and left, the phone kept ringing nonstop.. no one was on the other end, just.. kept ringing, I thought it was creepy as hell, so we just unplugged it again. Then he set an alarm on his cellphone to wake up in the morning, for 8:36, and it was I think 8:35 when he set it, and he said ‘lets watch the time turn so that it’ll be EXACTLY 12 hours before we have to wake up’.. so we did, because we’re that cool. The time ended up turning back 3 minutes instead, and he freaked out while I just hysterically laughed, I don’t know why cuz I was freaking out inside too but I could not help but laughing. So we calm down, and I noticed it was about to turn 36 again, but instead it went ahead 3 minutes, changing again back to the normal time. It just would NOT let us watch the clock change to the time we wanted. It was ridiculous. Other than the phone issues in the room, we kept hearing walking around, a lot, and noises above us closest to the wall against the tower rooms. There was a family there with kids, so I don’t know if they were staying above us or not, but lots of noises were heard, and when we were out and about the place, no one but us would be walking around. The noises weren’t proof of haunting at all, I don’t think, could just be very bad insulation and you can hear everything. As far as the phone problems, that was weird, and I have no explanation for those other than electronics can be wonky? I dont know, but I did steal a really cool looking fork from the food we had there, haha. Over all, it’s a beautiful place and I loved it to death.

There is little doubt that the Manresa Castle is haunted my story, hard to believe as it is, is as follows: I arrived in Port Townsend (hereafter referred to as “that one ****** town”)one day in the summer of 1988. After putting the boat up in the yard the crew (hereafter referred to as “those ******* guys”)and I headed up town? and ended up at The Back Alley, and promptly got messed up. Anyhoo I hooked up with some strumpet and we ended up at the Manresa Castle(hereafter referred….. you ******* get it). Well as I said I/we were plowed and we had some fun and had a little six or seven hour nap, oh did I mention that this chick was really good looking when we hooked up ? Well I awoke to discover that this trollop had transformed into something so hideous that found myself levitating to the head where I immediately blew this greenish **** all over the commode, the tank, the wall etc.-a ******* mess. After recovering sufficiently to understand that I had to get out of there at all cost I began to move as stealthily as possible towards the bedroom and the troll that had somehow tricked me into ******* it. I padded cautiously accross the floor when it happened…….the thing, the spirit, the poltergeist the whatever it ******* was ? the ghost flew out of my *** with a report similar to a ******* seal bomb…and the creature on the bed stirred,****.Luckily it remained asleep and I hastily dressed as the phantasm took on the form of an odor that can only be described as something that would gag a maggot, surely this was what it would smell like if the doorway to hell were to suddenly open wide.Coincidentally the abberation on the bed had its legs thrown wide open, and now that I think about it the strench was emminating from that direction…but never mind about that as escape is the only thing that matters. As I crept through the door and quietly closed it behind me I was thankful to have survived a night in a place so desecrated and unholy that it had possesed my mind,my vision,my stomach and my *** with sights, sounds and those ******* smells so vile they are almost beyond description. Stay at the Manreas Castle at your peril. P.S. The she devil searched me out and found me at the cursed watering hole she ambushed me at the night before as I was imbibing potions in an attempt to chase the demons from my body. You will rest comfortably in the knowledge that I,through sheer force of will resisted the foul temptress and only let her blow me out behind the bar. Sincerely, Sir Johnny Buttcracke ESQ.

Well, it was about…5 1/2 yrs. ago when I went into the Manresa Castle. I didn’t plan on staying the night there, so I automatically knew that I wouldn’t be able to hear or smell anything odd. I have had experiences of the supernatural in my life. But the day that I was there, I only wanted to take pics of the room 302 where the wife supposedly flung herself out of the window. I developed the pics and nothing showed up. No orbs, no mist. Nothing. I do plan on going there again in the future to do some more investigating. Anyone who plans on going there this year should email me: bettinasanangel@hotmail.com
please, no advertisements and people who don’t believe in the supernatural.

I stayed at the castle in 2004 and then again in 2006 for christmas The castle is beautifull, and has an errie calm about it. We had a great time and Preston was a great host. He let us take pictures (our chrismas pictures in period costumes in the parlor) We had a great time nd there was a presence aoung us. I have moved away from Wasington to te east coast, but if I ever go back to Washington I will go back to the castle.

I got the opportunity to stay here once, yes there was a lot of strange noises, but what was suprising was a young woman in her 20s to 30s walking around half naked…..to bad she was a ghost!

Why is this place listed in Maltby? It is about two hours from Maltby.
It is however haunted and the nicest place I have ever stayed. Been there three times twice for weddings. The staff is great and will go to any length to make sure that enjoy your stay.
The staff will share with you the stories and if you tell them you want the haunted rooms they will glady set you up. I think they are 302 and 309.
Do enjoy but be prepared these ghosts are quiet!

Note that the Castle is not in Maltby, as this site says, but in Port Townsend, WA.

the haunted rooms are 302,306, they are to be the most haunted but with the many times my family and i go there ive had weird things happen in room 302 my toes got messaged while sleeping in the bed by the door, in 306 my sis and i kaept getting cold spots and sometimes the one side of our arms. in room 307 my husband and iwere trying to sleep the bed vibrated then noises in the court yard nothing there i looked out the window for 2 men talking nothing not even in the parking lot of q.f.c. room 204 had things get moved the knot on the head bord looked like a victirian female portrait could not redue that pic, and a darting light ??? and in room 315 just felt real happy. then we caught a weird shadow in the ballroom with night shots camera and my daughter sed she seen a kitty on the back wall of the ballroom and i took a pic and had an orb. then mentioned it to the front desk and they told me about a little boy who wanted to know who was going to take care of the kitty when they left, they have no pets at manresa castle. so these are some of the fun we have had and cant wait to exaperience more mrs perswaytion

My fiance and I are going up there 3/26/2010. I can’t wait to see if the castles reputation is founded or not. We live in Oregon and have done quite a bit of paranormal investigations localy.
If anyone has any stories to share or other haunted places to visit in the great NW please contact me @ jacknormaniii@gmail.com
Wish me luck!
Jack

Hello!
My grandfather and grandmother, Joshua and Dolly Norris, bought the Manresa Castle in 1968 and turned it into a hotel…
I have excellent stories that have been passed on to me from them and my father who lived in the Castle for several years. It really is a spectacular place, and I try to visit every few months when I visit my old hometown.
I recommend, to everybody, visit the Manresa Castle and the city of Port Townsend, both are full of wonderful history.
