Real Haunted House

Manresa Castle

Maltby, Washington

During the 1800s, this building was used to house many monks. One of these monks became disenchanted with society and himself, and thus committed suicide. It is said that the sound of moans and chains may be heard in the tower where the suicide occurred. Other reported hauntings include eerie sounds in the night, lights turning on and off, windows opening and closing, and the sighting of an entity throughout the house.

I’ve heard a lot of different things about Manresa Castle over the years and have an interesting tale to tell. My ex-wife and I stayed there six years ago during the off season. It was a very unique experience because we were the only guests in the entire hotel. We stayed up all night “ghost hunting,” but weren’t really surprised when we failed to find any ghosts. My ex-wife even dared me to go streaking buck naked through the various floors of the castle, which I did while she videotaped me. Eventually we tried to go to sleep, but were immediately awakened by the sound of curiously loud footfalls coming down the hallway. We happened to be in one of the nicer suites. In fact, it was right next door to the suite where the bride had allegedly committed suicide all those years ago. In any case, these footsteps lead right up to our door and stopped suddenly. My ex and I looked at each other, thinking that perhaps the night clerk needed to tell us something. When we went to the door, there was no one in sight, and we hadn’t heard anybody walking away. A little bit later around 5:00 a.m., we were both rudely startled from a sound sleep by a persistent and very loud pounding noise coming from the wall right next to our bed. We were both pretty unnerved, but went to investigate anyway. Actually, I think I ended up doing the investigation by myself since my ex was too scared to get out of bed. Anyway, once again there was no one there. Now, does this mean the castle is haunted? I sure hope so, because it’s a lot more fun to believe that it is. Just remember that regardless of what anyone says, this really happened to us during our stay inside the Manresa Castle one cold February morning in 2000.

Sorry to burst everyones bubble but it’s room 306 not 202. The womans name was Kate Eisenbeis and she commited suicide by jumping out of a third story window after recieving news that her husband was lost at sea. Ironically that was not true and upon his return he was greeted not by his queen buy by an empty castle, the same castle he built for his beloved queen who was now gone. Striken with grief he left the castle to rot. After that it lay vacant for many years until one day it was sold, remodled, and converted into a finishing school for training preists. One night for whatever reason one of the head priests hung himself from the roof support beam of the southwest turret. Sometime after that the Castle was converted into a Hotel and since then it has been subject to much speculation. Albeit a very beautiful building and a cozy stay my own experience there will always have me asking myself did I really see that, or was it my imagination. I seriously doubt anyone who dismisses the mystery surrounding this place has ever been there.

In 2005, my mother, aunt, two cousins, and I stayed in the Tower Room of Manresa Castle. It was really cool to walk around and think about all the stuff that could have happened and spook yourself out and that was most of the fun of Manresa Castle. Until we all went to sleep. All night I heard whispering. It sounded like two or three people whispering at once, but I couldn’t understand what they were saying. At first I thought it was the rest of my family but when I woke up the next morning I asked them and they all said they weren’t talking. Except my cousin who slept in the master bedroom said she heard the whispering too around the same time I did. My aunt, who is really skeptical about ghosts, said that someone shook her shoulder to the point where she woke up, but when she rolled over she didnt see anyone/thing and my cousin who was sharing the bed with her was asleep. The thing was, I wasn’t really afraid when all this was happening. It was more of an excited comfort, even though I know no one in my family was creating this.

We are staying at the Castle Thanksgiving night. I’ll let you know if we experience anything haunted. We are staying in one of the suites on the 3rd floor. Looking forward to it!

There is someone on the top floor. If you don’t believe then grab your balls and go and see for yourself. Then try to tell everyone you don’t believe. Just because it’s not someone from the stories, it doesn’t’ mean that the land itself doesn’t have something on it.

I just found this online on the site…….
Charles died in 1902 and Kate remarried a few years later. The Castle was left empty for almost 20 years except for a caretaker

I guess those are the people that built the castle and everyone keeps saying the wife is the one who killed herself by jumping out of the tower. Where is this info comeing from? I would like to read about it!

please post the facts……thankyou

First off, that Ben boy needs his mouth washed out!! Second, I have stayed in the tower room at Manresa Castle and though we didn’t experience anything, it was a cool experience. We are returning to Seattle for vacation, and we have made a point to go again there. Lovely place, and the town is beautiful.

I do believe that “Manresa Castle” is haunted because my friend and her family went for a little vacation in “Manresa Castle”. My friend said that when my friend and her sister went to a little store she found a book about haunted biuldings in Washington and they found that the hotel that they where staying in was huanted. Later that night, my friend recals hearing strang clanking noises in the tower then she said that she heard the doors opening and closing.
The next day, her fathers shoe was on top of the light fixture. Her father said “I didnt do that!”. Usually her father can do a joke but say he didnt do it, but he was being serouse about it.Through that whole day my friend didnt want to stay a Manresa Castle anymore, but we all still think its haunted……

My husband and I stayed there in ‘05 in the turret suite on the 3rd floor. Being not of suspicious/paranoid heart, I went with a free mind. The room itself is gorgeous, elegant antiques fill a very spacious area and the view is to die for (no pun intended). It was a very hot day so we turned on an oscillating fan on a table which kept turning itself off. Now, I realize that to say a “ghost” did it would be the fun thing to say but my intellect calls faulty wiring. That being said, what I will at the very least question is the noctural activity emanating from the upstairs region above our bed. We hardly slept at all, due to footsteps (mostly) and whispering although we could not make out any distinct words. In the morning I inquired at the front desk if there were perhaps workers laboring during the night, which of course, there was not. Overall, I would say that the Manresa is a gorgeous place, the food in the restaurant was outstanding and the city of Port Townsend is definite must-see. Would I stay at Manresa again? Probably not, the feeling I got (more so in the froyer area of the lobby) was just creepy. Is it haunted? Whose to say, I’ll say what I’ve always said; best to be afraid of the people who ARE alive, not the dead ones!

What great stories- I’m sorry the negative comments were not as entertaining to read but you can’t win them all.

Anyway, I can’t wait to visit Manresa for myself
