Manresa Castle
During the 1800s, this building was used to house many monks. One of these monks became disenchanted with society and himself, and thus committed suicide. It is said that the sound of moans and chains may be heard in the tower where the suicide occurred. Other reported hauntings include eerie sounds in the night, lights turning on and off, windows opening and closing, and the sighting of an entity throughout the house.

As I was researching the haunting at Manresa Castle I ran into an article in the Seattle Weekly. Apparently a woman reporter warmed up to the bartender enough to get the real story of what had happened to the priest and the wife. According to the reporter all the stories were made up. The bartender had told her that there were so many people asking if the castle was haunted he made an up a colorful tail to get them to stop bugging him. Then the reporter went on to say that she herself had a run in with the paranormal that night. As she was sleeping in room 202 (not sure of the room number) the reporter awoke to something leaning her hair in a forceful manner.
On August 17 2007 Northwest Paranormal Investigation Agency (NWPIA.com) stayed the night in the second floor tower room. It was about 11:00pm when we fell asleep but the IR cam, voice recorder and the led EMF reader were still running. The next morning we woke up packed everything up and headed home a little upset that we couldn’t stay awake longer and finish the investigation. Unfortunately we didn’t get any funny feelings that night at all, until my wife had mentioned that on the way to the bathroom around 3:00am the EMF reader was in the red and flashing. So after her telling me that I was eager to get home and view the tapes. I’m not kidding when I tell you that as I was listening to the recordings I heard the first of four EVP’s. The first was a drawn out heeellllloooooooo the second was very unnerving. The voice was of a little boy saying “I’m sick…no”. The third and fourth were together. It was a very dark whisper “I’m afraid” six seconds after that was “I’m doomed”. If you don’t believe me you can check them out at nwpia.com you’ll have to give me a little time to post them.
Thanks
Bert

First off. Manresa castle is in Port Townsend Washington, not Maltby, wherever that might be.
The Manresa and the Palace hotel are both haunted and have been for some time. Do your history homework and check out why, even before the Victorian houses it was home to Native Americans. And last but certainly not least, if you are not interested in ghosts and hauntings, why are you here? Get a life!

My exboyfriend and I stayed at the castle about 2 years ago. It definetly gave me a creepy feeling. We went expecting to be totally scared to death, but it just wasn’t the case. After we checked in, we went out for drinks and came back and decided to roam the halls. We never heard or experienced anything. One weird thing that did happen was the next morning when we were getting ready to leave, I was out in the bedroom part and I was curling my hair, and he was in the shower, I heard the water stop, and I thought “boy, that was a quick shower.” Then it started again. That happened a few more times. When we got in the car and was driving away, I asked him why he kept turning the water on and off, and he said he didn’t it kept shutting off and on, and it was starting to tick him off. Who knows?

I never use to believe in ghosts until something happened to me. I have never stayed at the castle but every other year my family has a reunion at Fort Warden and we stay in the old Officer’s houses. They always gave me a creepy feeling and I just thought it was because the were old, but about 4 years ago I was sharing the master bedroom with my cousin, the room had a bathroom and sometime during the middle of the night I woke up facing the bathroom and I saw this figure of an old soldier standing in front of me. I was so freaked out but I thought OK this is not happening just turn around and go back to sleep. So I turned around and shut my eyes and tryed to pretend it wasn’t there. Which worked for about 10 seconds until I felt a very cold sensation go right though the middle of my body like the ghost walked right though me. I was so freaked out I would not open my eyes for the rest of the night. We get the same house every time and to this day I will not sleep in that room.
Also this past year my brother went up there to explore and heard weird footstep in the old military bunker.
I know Fort Warden is haunted!!

im watching the abc family channel right now…a show called scariest places on earth and the Manresa Castle was on their list!…a young man who stayed there in room 305 or 307 as a young boy while his parents stayed in room 306 went back with his 2 friends who each spent the night in a different room to investigate the feeling of someone setting down on the bed with him as a child and as a child he said he also felt a choking sensation…anyway he set up cameras and computers in the attic and watched his 2 friends sleep through the night…only they both were woken during the night and were frightend so bad they left in the middle of the night….when they looked back at the thermal camera there was a huge thermal (red) moving spot headed towards the bed the girl was sleeping in when she said she felt as if someone sat on the bed with her and then she ran out of the room…so i am now curious and i hope to check it out for myself one day since im not too far from there…i have had 3 other paranormal events occur in my life from age 17 to 22 i am now 23 anyway i have seen with my own eyes so i beleive i have a good chance of seeing something at Manresa

I believe that the hotel is haunted. I know a young woman (a reliable source) who used to be a housekeeper at the Manresa castle who quit after working with another housekeeper in a room where they had just made up the beds & hung fresh towels then went outside of the room into the hallway to fetch toiletries and trash bags and came back in the room to find the beds unmade and the towels on the floor, in addition they both reported feeling a very cold chill upon rentering the room. Neither of them had gone far enough from the room entrance to allow someone else to slip in and do that!

My wife and I stayed at the Manresa Castle for 2 nights back in 1989. I do not remember our room number but our room was at the end of the hall on the 3rd floor. We did not know of the haunted reputation of the hotel before our stay there but joked about the possibility of ghosts being there while walking the grounds around the hotel and from the creepy sounds that we heard in the hotel. Anyways, after our 2 day stay, we were getting ready to leave our room to checkout and I had our luggage in hand and had opened the room door when my wife’s sister called. The phone was next to a couch right near the door. I was hoping it would be a quick call so I left the door open and sat next to my wife as she was talking to her sister. During the conversation with her sister, my wife mentioned that we had gotten a weird vibe from the hotel and she joked about it being haunted. Right at that exact moment the door, which had been fully open, slammed shut. As you can imagine, we both looked at each other in amazement. I then proceeded to open the door to see if anyone was around that could have caused the door to shut. No one was around! We proceeded to check out and didn’t say a word to the hotel staff. About a month later we were watching this TV show about ghosts and one of the stories was about the haunted Manresa Castle. Unbelievable!

My family and I go there frequently. We are a fledgling paranormal group. My daughter is why I got interested in it, she insisted that there was a 4 to 6 year old girl in the shower stall of room 302 (she was about 3-1/2 yrs old at the time). She played and fed her friend there. We made mention of this little girl that my daughter calls [Chawanna] to the staff and manager(Preston), they mentioned that in the past people have said that they heard a child crying but none were ever found. About a year or 2 later, MR. Eisenbeise’ (the original builder) mosoleum lid broke and while reperations were made, people found a mysterious little girl’s casket on his coffin (verifyiable by local newspaper records). Nobody of his remaining family has any idea who she might be, but my daughter said Chawanna’s mommy used to cook and clean stuff like that for Chawanna’s dad. Well my conclusion was simple (nonverified as yet). You can come up with your own conclusion. But that is just one simple thing. We have had other unanswerable things that have happened but we take it as fun after all no one is ever hurt there just saying hi. And as for the burned boy, Manresa has never been burned, as far as any records show, so lets keep it that way NO SMOKING in it please. But the hospital across the street did burn down with the 3rd class citizens in it and that could explain the boy. Ghosts’ can move around a bit depending on the type of haunt that they are. We even have a few pic’s with something strange in them that try as might couldn’t debunk. We try to always remain professional in our research and use facts based in reality not fantasy. Is Manresa haunted? Good question and that depends on each persons reality/perspective of the world about them. We do not suscribe to convince all that ghosts’ do or do not exist. We genuinely enjoy our stays at the Castle and give a big shout out to all the staff!! Also we recommend to those of you who do believe unusual things have happened to you there, remember this. If whatever you believe is there was going to hurt anyone, it would already have happened! So go and enjoy yourselves there and don’t be afraid of anything. Also we highly recommend to folks that before one try’s to say something about a place, please review all available history so you don’t sound doofy explaing things that makes no sense historicly as recorded!
If you’d like to contact us for any reason please write to liberty34@hotmail.com and refer to Manresa or any other thing you’d like to share in the paranormal realm. Please no mass emailings or advertisements!! Thanx :=)Tim, Donna and Isabella…SKEPTICAL 2, Paranormal researchers

My fiance and I stayed at Manresa Castle last weekend on Nov.15 for my birthday. I had only heard some stories of the priest who supposidly hung himself above the 3rd floor and the girl “kate” who threw herself out the window of 302 or 306. I was fortunate enough to have my own experience. While eating dinner I went to use the ladies restroom. Upon entering I felt like someone was in there, I didnt really think anything of it and a quick glance at the stalls proved that no one but me was there. Besides my fiance and I were the only hotel guests besides two women who had gone up to bed 45 minutes before. While in the stall I had trouble getting the lock closed but was able to get it enough to stay closed. After a moment I head someone else fumbling with the lock in a stall near mine. As soon as I noticed the noise my own stall door opened in on me. I leaned forward to close it and heard someone breathing heavily, I stopped breathing myself to be sure that it wasnt my own breath I was hearing. When I did so I continued to hear the breathing, followed by a few more clicks of someone struggling with the lock. I brushed it off, sure that another women had come into the restroom. But when I exited the stall there was still no one but me in the restroom. Later that night we went back up to our room which was on the 3rd floor, I saw someones shadow turning down the hall we were on our way too (and no it was not our own shadow because it was going to opposite way ours were) When we turned the corner toward our room there was no one there and we discovered the next day that there were in fact no other guests staying on the 3rd floor that night. Believe what you will but I honestly believe Manresa Castle is haunted. Although it was a beautiful place, and I plan to go back as often as I can. We had a wonderful time.

My boyfriend and I just stayed in Room 302 a couple of weeks ago (March 2008). My boyfriend had heard the “haunted” rumors and had wanted to go stay in the tower for many years, so I took him for his birthday. I have never believed in ghosts or spirits, as I’m a very logical person (I am a math teacher at a college) and feel like I’d have to see it to believe it. Well, the castle is very beautiful and if you appreciate old things as I do, you will love it. Room 302 is gorgeous, and would never seem to be haunted during the day. Things were fine until I went to sleep. We slept in the main room and there’s a small bedroom off the main room that has the bathroom attached to it. When I was asleep, I had a terrifying dream that I was very scared in the bed and I was trying to reach my boyfriend lying behind me but something was holding my arms up above him, and wouldn’t let me touch him to wake him no matter what I tried. I woke up and then laying there heard noises in the smaller bedroom. It sounded like someone was moving around in there near the wall that goes to the bathroom. I was so scared that I woke my boyfriend up and had him turn of all the lights. I was ready to get out of there anytime. I was thinking I should sleep in the hallway or the lobby where it was light (stupid huh?). I was scared to move and then eventually fell asleep finally. I’m still not sure what happened that night; all I know is that it was very scary to me. Overall it is a very nice place to stay… my parents want to stay in the same room with us in July so I’ll keep you posted! Heidi

Valentine’s Weekend 2008 my sweetheart and I stayed in the Manresa Castle. I grew up around Port Townsend and heard that it was haunted so I wanted to stay there SO bad. I have never seen anything paranormal before but was hoping to see something when there for the night. I heard noises like someone was walking above us shortly after 4pm-and we were on the 3rd floor so I don’t know how that would be possible. My mom told me that she knew someone who fell down the front stairs of the castle and broke several ribs. Apparantly his wife got injured on the same trip also. My honey fell UP the stairs when we first arrived-creepy. I have “feelings” about places and felt something strange on the second floor of the castle-it was very cold right there also. We are going back for his birthday in a couple weeks and we are going to stay in the room located right under the tower (where the priest supposidly hung himself.) we’ll see what happens but that castle is true beauty and i LOVE staying there!!!! Rooms are a little small but it’s a fun time.

My step-dad travels a lot on business, and stayed in Manresa Castle a few years back while having a meeting in Port Townsend. He stayed in the third floor room where (apparently) the wife of the person who owned the castle way back when committed suicide by jumping out of the window in the room my dad stayed in. After the suicide, the husband hung himself in the attic. Anyway, my dad said at around like 9 or so, the lights in his room went out. After flipping the switches a few times, he called the front desk and had someone go check the breakers. At this point my dad had no idea about the suicide or anything, so he thought it was just an electrical problem. Later, the front desk told him that they couldn’t find any problems with the breakers or electrical box, and didn’t know why the lights had gone out, and that it hadn’t happened to any of the other rooms. He was close to going to bed anyway so he just went to sleep with there being no working lights still. The lights worked fine by the next morning however, and the front desk later told him that the particular room he stayed in had been where the lady committed suicide and there had been strange things that happened in that room in the past. After this, my dad bought a book that was being sold in the lobby that tells about the place and it’s infamous hauntings, and there was even a tv crew that came the day my dad was leaving to film for a show (I’m not sure what channel it was for though).

My wife and I spent 2 nights in the castle in 1997.
We had no idea about the history of the castle.
In the middle of the night, we heard the bathroom door squeeking then it shot completely.
My wife said “oh what was that”? I told her jocking
“It must be haunted”
My sife did not like this subject so she said “shut up and go to sleep”
We forgot about it till e few years latter while I was watching the travel channel, it was about the most haunted places in the NW and they were 3 places Fort of vancouver, Oregon coast light houce and sure enough the castle, I called my wife to watch it
It was so creepy we could not believe it.

Port Townsend has lots of ghostly activity for hunters to check out. Both the Manresa Castle and the Palace Hotel have kept a file of guests reports in their own handriting that you can ask to view. Some of the comments are down right creepy. The Rothschild House is also haunted and is now a museum that you can explore. Check out the Bead shop next to the Palace Hotel, too and the Fort has its own list of hauntings!
Happy hunting!
Joe
