Real Haunted House

Meade Hotel – Bannack State Park

Dillon, Montana
By Lisa

This 2-story brick building constructed in 1875 was built to be used as a county courthouse.  After the county seat in which it was built in moved, this building became vacant until 1890 when a man named Dr. John Singleton Mead bought it and turned it into a hotel.

The Meade Hotel hotel hosted major social events and thus became the center of the town’s social activity.  The hotel became quite popular and was very busy during the mining years, but soon closed down in the 1940s as people left the area.

One tale of a young girl haunts the area of the Meade Hotel.  She was the daughter of the hotel manager at one time, and supposedly drowned in the pond nearby in 1916.  She first appeared as a ghost to her best friend.  She is mostly seen by children, and is wearing a blue dress.  She has also been seen looking out the second floor windows.

Other observances: An older woman who haunts the second floor, sounds of babies and children crying and cold spots felt throughout the building.

We were in bannack last summer and checked out the ghost town. We found nothing strange in the hotel however in one of the houses we encountered a strange happening. The door banged shut and I was sure that I had closed it. After that we could smell a faint perfume scent
