Real Haunted House

Mental Institution for Children

Meadow Vista, California

This site, which now lies deep in the woods, was once a mental institution for many “crazy” children in the 1930s. There is also a hospital associated with the abandoned cabins that lies 10 miles away. The children, who were violent or depressed, were sent here for treatment. Children who misbehaved were strapped to the beds with belts and beaten until they were unconscious. Many the children were killed and due to this cruelty, the facility was closed and the gate around the hospital’s perimeter was chained closed. Many have seen not only lights in the windows, but shadows of children as well.

I’ve been here before, twice actually. Didn’t want to go back the second time, but felt I had to. Lots of contact the first time there. Voices, lights, shadows, eyes, etc. I went back because I strongly believe that something came home with me and I needed to bring it back Not going to go into details because it frightens me just writing this now. I have friends who have seen the little girl referenced in the comments above.

I’ve been there twice. It is very scarry, its a small building really although it is 2 stories. It has a pulley outside on one end for some reason and there are flowers growing inside the fenced area(like someone is taking care of them). I was there in the evening the first time, the second time during the day(I wont go there at night). Im not nessesarily a believer in ghosts but it is out in the woods and is very very creepy. My hair is standing on end right now as I write this. It is in Applegate and might be a little hard for someone to find that isnt familair with the area. It is the building just past the publishing company (really weird place for that also.).

Okay. So my friend and I were looking for this “abandoned hospital” up in Applegate today. If you look at Google maps, search Applegate and go up to the right off Heather Glen Drive and South Dunvegan, there’s this spiraled road that leads all the way to the top of a hill….we tried to get there but every entrance was gated off. We also asked a few residents of the trailer park where the entrances laid and nobody would tell us anything.

We thought that maybe the Catholic retreat had a road that led to this place, and there is abandoned cabins and what not there, but that is NOT the haunted place everyone is looking for. There is definitely something creepy about that “Our Lady of the Oaks” retreat, but that’s not haunted to my knowledge.

We’re going back tonight to see if we can get through the gate. There are no no trespassing signs…so we’re just gonna wing it. What is at the top of that hill?!?! That’s where the haunting is at. Nobody in Applegate will tell us anything…..creepy. Might have to check out the local library.

and to clarify there was a children’s mental institute in Weimar but it’s now a hospital.

There’s also a haunted place in Nevada City, thirty miles up. It’s an abandoned hospital
