The slave houses are located over by sable palms there is an old white lady living next to the slave houses but shes very grumpy and will call the cops on you if u traspass… the entrance to this place is on a dirt road off of southmost just passing 511. u cant miss it its the only dirt road with a trail of palm trees on both sides. Careful and watch for border patrol since the river is extremely close. I’ve been there before years ago and all i saw was people walking by the windows in the houses and my car doors would make noises like if someone was trying to open them… and as for the fort brown place you can hear bells and a soilder with a dog following him

The University of Texas Southmost College sets on the site of old Fort Brown. The library is haunted. The Old Morgue and Gargas Hall are haunted. The University Hotels on the island in the resaca (oxbow lake) are haunted. I have interviewed people who have worked there and they have seen the little girl in the library and Tandy Hall. Students have told me about seeing soilders in brown uniforms over by the new student center. UTB sells a book in the gift shop called “The Ghosts of Fort Brown”. Gotta be one of the most haunted places in the country.

In refrence to haunting at Berta Cabaza in San Benito, ya’ll need to get the story right. I know because I was there from the begining. Her name was Yvette. It was during lunch time when the flag pole broke and landed on her head. I was but a few steps away when it happened. The school has been closed since then and a new one opened up across town. The school is not a house at all, but it used to be many things through out the history of S.B. one of which a high school. Many of my friends and co-workers have seen or heard Yvette playing in the gym which is still used today by the public. She used to play volleyball and basketball. Part of the flag pole still remains in front of the school as a tribute to her. If you visit, please bring her a yellow rose. She would have like that.

I’ve been to camp lulu and it’s not a pretty site. my friends and i had a bad experience the time we went. it was about 2:30 a.m. there was no wind, the slightest noise startled us, and it was dark as hell. in the front of the camp there are these huge black gates, it’s quite hard to enter. but there is an easier route. Behind the camp is a little resaca with stepping stones, after the stepping stones is a gate about as high as my chest and thats because im only 5’6. Anyway, as soon as you cross the gate you come across a small , what used to be campfire. There are logs where i guess the girls would sit and tell stories and rocks in the middle where they would lite fires. But what’s very disturbing is a huge wooden cross in the middle of the little campfire. The cross is in the ground but it is upside down (weird huh!!). It stand perfectly about 8 ft. and just down a little pathway from the cross are from what i saw, 3 little cottages, all tattered and wood all molded. What freaked out my friends and i was that when we stood in front of the little cottages we heard laughing but as if little girls were laughing. We also heard movement from inside the cottages. We decided to wait no longer and began to go back to the exit. But to our surprise an old man with a dirty old jean jacket and a wierd looking cowboy hat. (Sorta like the one from jeepers creepers) was standing in the way of our exit with a sawed of shotgun!! My friends managed to run past him, but at the time i was a fat***. So he was able to push me to the ground. I last remembered when he held the gun to my face and told me that if i ” had any smarts in my brain, that i would run as fast as i could to the gate or else he would splatter my brains across the pavement.” i was scarred as *@#$!!! I was able to get up and run. Only problem was my friends had taken off in the car and i had to run all the way to the nearest house i could find. the people were cool about me using their phone, and my friends picked me up from that house. I told them my story and they told me to be very careful becuase they heard that the old man that hit me lives in camp lulu and he is crazy. The people even told me that he could possibly be the one that murdered those little girls due to the fact that the property belongs him and he used to run the camp back then!! Folks this story is 110 % true. This happened about 3 yrs ago. I was what…17 years old, i had just moved here from chicago and heard of the place, went with a few so called friends and almost got shot and left behind. So if you decide to go out there i suggest you be careful the old man is very crazy. And for someone to live in the middle of a haunted place and walk around the freaky place in the middle of the night…is crazy to me!!!

I have been to Camp Lulu. I had an experienace. Don’t know if it was my mind playing tricks on me. I was the only one who saw this. As we rolled up to the big gates at the entrance of Camp Lulu everyone was so excited I guess for the reason that we had fear on our mind. We got off and walked up to the gates. It was about 4 of us. We hurd some noises coming from inside the property but couldint realy distiguish the noise. As I looked to my left i saw a figure, standing still. Just a black figure staring right at me or at us. I asked everyone if they could see the figure of a man but no one answerd me. They just ran and go in the truck. As i walked to the truck i staid looking toward were the figure of the man was and it was still there. Not a movement or anything. It was as if the figure was studying us. I would ask my friends if they had seen the man but no one would respond they would just ignore my comment. I still wonder who or what that was. But i know i saw that figure of a man.

I have been trying to look up info. on the camp and of the murders that happend there but haven’t been able to find any. Does anyone know how i can find more info on this? I have a big feeling there is something there. I want to understand what happend there and how. Please help me find more info on this subject.

Thank you

well two things happened when my friend and i visited camp lulu. My friend got down of her car and walked through the gate, she told me that while she was in there she felt someone brush against her then she heard a scream coming from the cabins she ran quickly as possible to the car. As we drove away we locked the doors and rolled up all the windows even though it was a really hot night. As we tried to drive away as quickly as possible, the doors started to unlock by themselves. everytime we locked the doors they would unlock and real cold air came in through the vents of the car. since the car is real old the air conditioner doesnt work we couldnt explain what was happening. As we left the neighborhood we couldnt feel the cold air as much and the doors stopped unlocking themselves. if anyone plans to visit the camp be very careful.

Curious of this place says:

September 4, 2007, 4:55 pm

I use to live behind the camp. There was this dirt road that led you from the little neighborhood we lived in to the back of this camp. I went to this camp with a group of friends the only thing I saw that my friends did not see.Was a thin white light it was floating in the middle of the road right before we got the gates. But at the time i went we didnt see no big black gates (back in 99-00′)it was the kind of gates you put for a ranch. Anybody could actually get down. We did but nothing happened. I guess this place has really gotten pretty bad, my lil brother tells me that the back roads we used to drive are locked down as well as the front. But from what i have read from you guys its pretty tripped out. If anyone goes d=be prepared to run and girls please seriously dont go in heels like going to a club. anything is possible and you have to be ready to run…..

I went to Camp Lulu just now. When I was driving out there on Stillman Road, my windows fogged up and I could not see anything. The air was not even that humid today. I had to stop so many times and wait while I turned the heater on to unfog them. It was scary, but I have never been more scared than the time my friends and I went to some place in Olmito. Anyways, if you are driving th eexpressway out of Brownsville, you get off at the Olmito exit and then turn left. You follow that road until you get to the Rancho Viejo entrance. It is across that entrance. We parked our car and kept walking beyond the wooded area, and there was an old battle site. There is a marker there and we kept walking until it turned into this open field. At first I was actually fascinated because I never knew that place had existed, but we started to walk by this big ditch and it smelled so bad. It smelled like something was rotting and my friend said that that was probably where they would burn the dead bodies. I do not know if that just made me paranoid, but after that I kept hearing sticks crack around us and feeling a breeze as if people were running by us. I could hear voices and some sort of flapping, like a flag maybe. A really cool breeze started to blow even though it was really humid and hot that night. That was when we started to run to our car; I do not think I have ever ran that fast in my life, my adrenaline was pumping like crazy.

1825 W Madison St, Brownsville, Tx. I grew up there and still have nightmares. Something would run down the stairs and slam the back door every other day. Oddly enough we sort of got used to it. Then we moved in 96 when the ghost started to act hostile. Ask anyone about whos been in that house, they will tell you.

If Camp Lulu is haunted, as most comments state, why is there a UTB professor arranging test to be administered in his house “Camp Lulu”?

yeah right says:

Yeah Right… I used to live there at Casa De Colores by Sabal Palms. For the millionth time… ITS NOT HAUNTED… I would stay there alone for nights and nothing ever happened. My entire family are Native American and we all lived there. The images that people claim to see are bogus. If anything, the grounds there are sacred due to that many Native ceremonies happened there. The lady that lives there have taken care of those lands for many years. They live there and please respect their privacy.

I was 10yrs old and in Girls Scouts when i went camping at Camp Lulu, well it was actually called Camp Lulu Sams. I’m 30yrs old now and can actually remember the fun we had there. Meeting other girls scouts, sleeping in those cabins and the gatherings we all had. We stayed there for a weekend and can honestly say that it was not haunted then. When was this place closed down? and when do they say that these murders happened? Why wasn’t it ever on the news about all these murders?

i went to cam lulu last nite and saw nothing … it was a perfect nite because it was hot and cold and foggy perfect for a horror movie … as we drove closer to the big black gates the fog got even thicker but other than that i saw nothing … as we stood infront of the gates my friend claims he saw a man standing to his left (just a black figure) again i saw nothing … its a cool place to go visit, just hard to get through the gates as there is a camera pointing straight at the gates (city property) but fun for a scare

I went to camp lulu when i was in middle school for field day…..two friends of mine and I managed to sneak into the house through a small lil window on the bottom of a wooden door that lead to the stairways….It was pretty big and dirty from inside. it had a huge guest(living room) room with a fire place, 2yellow tile restrooms down the hall across from each other…then up the stairways were 3 big rooms some steps were missing so we had to be very careful. the 1st room to our right was empty with only one full size bed that had been burned from the middle as well as the wooden floor, then down the hall up 3 steps was a smaller room that had a sign on the door of a lady’s name and that room had a door to the attic, which I opened and found an old desk with a small bible and a name of a nun…..the other room was to your left with a couple of steps down which looked like a small class room with small desks and a huge ch.borad……nothing really scary in side the house…but it did have 3 extra rooms on the side of the house with bunkbeds and they were those huge bags that the military carry the stuff in, on some of the beds but the rooms messdoors were locked with key locks…..I still remember it clearly till this day and that was 10 yrs ago..and I did notice the wooden cross infront of the house…Camp Lulu is just an old house with history in it.

if yall wanna stop messing around, go down southmost till you the road ends. in the distance to the right youll see an old slave owners house thats been condemned for a long time now. Its called casa de colores. there arent any power lines out there whatsoever. its about 50 yards from the river. before border patrol got so tight (about 10 years ago ) we went out there to smoke…you know. before we even started, we heard a loud scream from inside and one of the windows started opening and shutiing slamming hard. naturally we all were scared out of our minds.when we made it onto the road again, we stopped and looked back and the door, wich you can see from the road, was gone. not open…gone, and you could light turning on and off. like a light switch. it was first and last time i went out there. wont ever go back.

andy says:

January 21, 2008, 4:16 am

also…check out casablanca 2000. its on price. its a club thats been there since the 50’s. ive heard older people swear on their life that they were there on the night a young was dancing with the devil himself. supposedly, he was dressed in white, very attractive and alone. the girl and he were dancing in the middle of the club when people started backing away because they noticed the man had no feet. (this is a very specific detail, every account of the event ive ever heard agreed with the following) he had no feet, they were in the middle of the club, and when everyone, including the band, stopped what they were doing to see that he had no feet, he just disappeared. and im not talking about cartoony or movie special effects. they all say he just disappeared. as soon as he did though, the girl collapse and was dead on the scene. never in my lofe will i ever set foor in that building.

andy says:

About the old Berta Cabaza Middle School being haunted. I wouldn’t be too sure that’s true at all. I was there when the incident happened. Her name is Yvette Salinas. During their lunch break kids were out in the front court yard, high winds, and the pole was a very tall and rusted pole. It fell, hit her on the head. She died from loss of blood. I grew up with her little brother, he also happeneds to be my ex-boyfriend. This happened roughly around 1995, her brother is still alive and well today, he is 23 years old. I’ve never heard any such things about her haunting BCMS. The only thing I have heard though is a couple of my friends brought out a voice recorder and did record suspicious noises and voices (i guess). We also have to consider this building is a very old building dated back in the 1800’s. This “haunting” could be anything. For everyones information.

Just a girl says:

June 1, 2008, 9:50 pm

Another thing, the old Berta Cabaza is located in San Benito, Texas. It’s been vacated since 1997. Rumors say it was going to be turned into a museum. Yes, It is a very creepy building, especially always going through the halls with the old black and white pictures of the passed Alumni up on the walls. ( Berta Cabaza used to be a High School ) I’d love for people to check it out and put it to a test. I’ve been wanting to do it myself for years.

There are many places and many scary stories around the valley. From the little handprints behind the cars to voices and appearances. My grandmother (may she rest in peace) would tell me that by FM RD 1847 (towards Arroyo) at the stroke of midnight, one could see a white floating ghost and an eerie whistling noise. This lady would be making her way from the cemetery (behind HEB)to the Arroyo and literally disappear in front of my grandmother’s house into the dark night. No one knew who she was in life just a lady in search of her family. I did not stay around too long to see if this was for real. I was under the covers or just in the kitchen with my dad. Too scared!

I remember when i went to the cemetary. My granmother is buried there. And I have seen the woman ghost. It is true. I am also a naitive of Brownsville currently living in Houston. I was with 4 other friends and we were at the stop sign.It was foggy that night and we did see her walk behind the car away from the cemetary. We were Drinking and smoking that night so we really didnt believe our own eyes, But we all shared the same experience and we knew we all did see it. But to me it was more of a white fuzzy sort of shadow. but more like fog and it was like a trip… Now about Camp Lulu, My sister went to that camp back in the late 70’s. She was around 9 or 10 yrs old. and she would like to know when all the supposed “murders” took place. in what year? When she was at Camp Lulu she never heard anything of we would like to know about that… Now as far as Casa De Colores, me and the same friends went To a place behind the college or rather on the side of the property. its just outside of downtown.I dont remember the name of the street but the school Is across the street from El Expresso bus lines. Its next to a ball park and in the middle or outside of the school..Now I dont think it was Casa De Colores but It was supposedly haunted. there was a dirt road to go up and it was a lil hill. This was like 7 yrs ago and at the time it did not have a gate there. and the road was narrow. It was dark the night we went, but we could see that if we turned wrong we were gonna end up in the water. The sides were surrounded with water and we drove all the way in side.(it was late like @ 1 or 2am) Then we parked when we got to an old abandoned white house with boards all over. There was an empty lot to the left of the house and we got down and started walking around The empty lot.Someone once said that a house used 2 be there but it was burned down. But I felt like there was something there under neath the could tell that there was a basement or something under the place. Well, we started hearing things like wispering and like if somthing was walking toward us..Now I understand that that could have been an animal or an illigal imigrant walking, since it is know as a hiding place for them cuz of all the trees and being in the middle of the woods(imigration is always there).Anyways, We got freaked cuz the noises cot closer and it seemed like it was following us.When we got back to the car, we turned the car and the fog lights on and locked the doors. But We all felt the door moving and sounding like someone was tryng to open the doors! We got very freaked out and scared So we turned around and left. But when we were leaving, My friends in the back seat started panicing and screaming to go faster cuz someone was chasing us.Well one of my friends was driving and I was in the front seat, the both of us in the front did not see anything when we turned around. But the ones in the back saw it..they only saw two head lights and when we got close to the front they said it dissapeared! I believe they did see something cuz the two girls were crying in fear and the other guy in the back was like in shock or something he was quiet the whole way home..But the Girls keeped swearing they saw a car and they keeped asking us why we didnt see the lights..To this day they still swear up and down on what they saw..They think were crazy for “NOT” seeing the lights!….But ok, one more comment. Its about the Club called Casa Blanca. Ive been there before, along time ago and I never heard anything about the story and I never felt anything evil there.I can usually pick up that sort of thing quick..But my mom,However, does remember hearing that story, she was like 7 when my grandmother told her about it..My Grandmother used to go to that club at the time.. But she had said she wasnt there on that day her friends told her about it.. so Im still not sure it it was real or not..

i searched camp lulu well i think it is..on google maps..and the road ends at some steel gates..and all i can see in the 360* view is some gates that have like birds or so on the gate and this i think its the name of the place but i cant zoom it in because its not as clear but i can see something like a street light pole but maybe its a camera…so is this camp lulu…thers a long river in the back and a street is conected (Butlet St) but you also cant view it well part of it because i think its a dirt road or the person who did the maps (because at some point you can see the car with camers in them) didnt go that far..oh also where is the BISD Camp..i dont know if you ever went but is this the camp..Camp lulu the camp where the BISD took the students..i was in middle school when i went and i remember they had a swimming pool…and there were these cabens but when we asked the teacher she didnt let us get close to friends and i tried to get close but we got introuble…they kept on telling us it wasnt safe..mistery there..but those cabens sure looked old..

I went to Camp Lula Sams for 4 years in the early 80’s as a girl scout. I nor any of the other girls ever experienced any of these things. It was spooky sometimes because it was in the middle of nowhere (at that time) and when your a kid, sleeping in cabins that don’t have locks, well, one’s imagination could run wild. Anyway, Out of all the times I was there nothing paranormal happened. Those were great summers and I made many friends. I do remember Lula’s house though but never had the opportunity to go inside.

I live in Brownsville and the ghost is real but he is not the only ghost at Fort Brown (UTB) there is the three men playing dice in a room that is locked and hasn’t been opened since it was locked about a hundred years ago. The other ghost is of a women who turned into a cat and her maid cut off her paw and soon after she died.

Ghost of Fort Brown says:

February 8, 2009, 4:03 pm

Camp Lulu is not haunted. The former girl scouts have posted the truth. I looked into it and am convinced this is all urban myth. I personally know the owners who wish people would not disturb the site as they are still trying to maintain the property and continually use it for educational purposes. They have other work to do also and the caretaker will have you arrested for tresspassing so please consider staying put outside of the gate if you must go out there. Brownsville has many haunted places which include many myths and superstitions. Many people venture out into the supposedly haunted areas expecting to be “spooked” and I realize people here will assert they’re not lying here but really, some people DO turn loose their imaginations when thrill seeking alleged haunted sites. I’ve seen that myself many times. I hope this opinion helps some and if it gets some readers angry, sorry.

Hey what up
for the people who might know of this story may know who I am.

I work for Big Brother Skate Shop in Brownsville Texas. We are located on 734 E. Levee right in the outskirts of downtown. The place where this shop is used to be an old tire shop. One day while the store was up and running with customers i decided to go to the restroom. In order to reach the restroom i had to go through a small warehouse and the owner’s office where I reached the warehouse where alot of the wholesale is done. I glimpsed to my right and there it was a newspaper boy just swinging his legs on a table and looking down. As soon as i screamed and turned back to see if he was still there, he vanished. After teasing me and hearing my story later on the owner told me a story about him seeing the same ghost when he was younger but at his old house when he was a kid. Could it be that hes following Big Brother’s Owner or is he just at the shop for fun? Alot of kids hang there so maybe hes looking froward to make some new friends.

There was a man who lived in Indian Lake and would travel by bike and he would ride down Fm road 803 on his way back from Brownsville, One night he went down that road around 3 am and he felt chills all over his body and an evil presence, he saw orbs of lights around him and he never went through that road again, The new Dora Romero Elementary and the Los Fresnos United High School will be haunted also , they both will be located on Fm road 803. As far as exploring Camp Lulu Sams, stay away from that place, let the spirits rest in peace, don’t go looking for them cause they feed of the fear and energy of the people looking for them and don’t play the ouji board, cause you will contact evil spirits, alot of the ouji board players wind up in Insane asylums, also don’t contact the dead , cause chances are you won’t be contacting your dead relatives but a demonic representative from hell. Seek Jesus and the Holy Ghost, Cause time is short and all the dead will be raised and judged by God. The living also will be judged. Seek the Holy Spirit……..

Hey Nicole/ Annie or any one else intrested…I started investigating two small cemetaries off Old Military HWY off Brownsville (Very close to Resaca De La Palma Battlefield site, which I also want to check out).My best friend died in front of the first cemetary,(1/4/09 a wooden cross with his name on cemetary fence)Been there once and gotten two consecutive EVP moans soon after questioning and one mile down the road the second cemetary where he is buried, I’ve gotten an orb next to his headstone and other places you can check out the cemetary in my 3 youtube tributes to him, look under tizoc75 or under Jose Manny Sierra. Been there twice after midnight for about 10-15 minutes each but too many mosquitos, I have a night vision Camcorder/Digital Camera/ EMF meter/ + other equipt. , will like to get together with someone/gp and check out these site and the Battlefield in more details or any other sites that are worthy

I spent several summers going to girl scout camp at Camp Lula Sams. Nothing scary ever happened. It was a great place and a lot of fun. I hav a lot of good memories of that place. I think the only reason you people have been scared going out there is because you were expecting to be scared. It’s my understanding that it is now a wildlife refuge and teaching facility so there is probably security out there trying to keep you nuts off the property. You people need to get a life.

I’ve lived in Brownsville, TX my entire life. For those of you who want to experience the scare of a life time you should most definitely go to UTB or University of Texas at Brownsville, and formerly Fort Brown used during the Mexican-American War. Many people have encountered spirits of both Mexican and American soldiers. Within the campus there still stands what used to be the morgue, during the war. If you spend enough time after hours you will be sure to hear war cries and marching soldiers even the galloping of horses as well as their breathing.
