Tavern
Sometime in the 1800’s two Indians were picking berries near the edge of town, when a group of angry white townspeople found them and dragged them back to the center of town. They were accused of raping and killing a young white girl and they were hanged outside the local tavern. A few years later, a white man confessed to raping and killing the young girl. The tavern still stands in downtown Brainerd and sometimes at night when the bar closes, people have reported hearing the cries of Indian people and the beating of drums.

I live in Brainerd and its actually a somewhat quiet community, in exception from Thursday evenings, which I believe is Police saturation night, but thats only what I’ve heard, anyhow, I know where the tavern is, and the woods in the area are eerie, but eerie is really cool, and ghosts can’t hurt you right? I heard that too, I believe in ghosts and spirits, but… once when i was little I thought that I had seen a ghost in my Deerwood home. A couple of days later my tonsils became very swollen and I had to get them removed, is it possible that a lost soul or spirit could have been responsible for something like that?

This is actually a true story, It was actually published in the Brainerd Daily Dispatch in earlier years about three indian males that were in town, and a person was found killed just on the outskirts of the old Birlington Northern railroad center. They were taken into Brainerd (which is where downtown brainerd is now) and hung in a pine tree that was outside a tavern that was on the corner of front streen and the street that is now 7th street. The actual tavern burned down a few years after that and then moved to a new location…however the name of the tavern stayed the same; The Last Turn Saloon…
You can go to the Brainerd Public library and find the actual Brainerd Dispatch Article in either the microfilm room or in sesquinsenial book of braierd also published by the Braierd Dispatch. (it is a green paperback bound book in the reference section) it has all kinds of articles of brainerd’s history and there is even a picture of the tree and the bar from an old paper article about the hanging.

I have heard from numerous bartenders at The Last Turn that the bar is haunted. They’ve told me of weird noises they’ve heard and have seen things fall off of shelves that really aren’t able to fall so easily. One bartender in particular wouldn’t say a whole lot about it but he did say he was scared to be there alone. I’m not sure if this is the bar that is referenced in this story though.

Why were Indians in Minnesota around that time? The British were too busy occupying India.
Um…use politically correct terms.

to the person known as “your mom” you must not be very bright! Indians have been here in Minnesota for a very long time. There are many reservations here but the land here in Minnesota belonged to mostly Indians. I believe this story. There are alot of people who will kill another because of their race or religion.

There is a rail road track near this location. Two Indians were walking near the tracks. One puts his head on the rail track and says “Buffalo come”, the other says “how do you know?” the other one says “sticky ear”.

Ghosts can hurt you, if they want to. Especially when natives are pissed… My uncle’s friend almost died when ghost attacked him in his house on his reservation. He was in the hopital for 2 weeks. I would love to go to Brainerd and found out where this place is. It would be cool if I saw them. My family can see spirits.

Ummm… to your mom…. Native Americans was here before the white people. It was our land before they tricked us and stole it. They gave us alcohol for our land. How stupid can you be if you didn’t know that. Maybe you should go back to school! That mad me very pissed off!
