I was just there 2 weeks ago. Believe it or not I actualy saw the ghost. It was sooo cool but he was not scarry, just ugly!!!! I took a picture of him too.

THAT IS THE GAYEST STORY I HAVE EVER H

The ghost’s name is Peg Leg-some call him Hoppy. He has a gold ring in his left earlobe and is dressed in soilder’s clothes. Word is, he was forced to serve in the service after he was caught for piracy on a vessel headed for the southern tip of florida. He was happy serving as a soilder, as he did not die from scurvey. The ship’s name was The Marietta that he was captured on. It was a smaller vessel with 13 other pirates on board. He surrendered when the battle was being lost from the US war vessel- the others died under thier oath to thier Captain. Basically he was a traitor to his fellow pirates. He lost his leg due to battle, and eventually died from infection at the hospital from gang green that set in his amputated leg. A peg is in place where his leg used to be. Some say you can hear the faint tapping of his peg leg in this place around sun set.

I GO TO SCHOOL AROUND THE HOUSE AND WE BE ON THE BUS LOOKIN IN THE WINDOW AND WE SAW A WOMEN WROCKIN IN A CHAIR BY THE WINDOW.

This is my cousin’s paternal grandmother’s house. She was not directly related to myself. The house is amazing! The upstairs was the hospital area and still has blood stains on the floor. Spending the night there was a little scary. I think Mrs. Nicholson was trying to scare us. I didn’t spend enough time there to “see” anything but there are bones under the house.

I visited this house when I was a kid living in LA. I did see the blood stains on the wooden floor of the upstairs attic. I also remember being in a front bedroom with my dad and we both felt a cold chill drift by. It was a pretty creepy place.

That is very creepy. Why would someone cut off another persons leg? That is crazy!! I would be out of that place in 1 second if I knew it was haunted, but now I do know! Why can’t he just ignore people when they come to explore his house? That would be freaky if some stupid kids walked up to his house and started throwing rocks!! He would probably come out of his house quietly and snatch them.

I just moved to the area and am interested in finding out more about this house. Where is it and is it privately owned? And like Josh asked, how do I get there? Who do I need to talk to in order to take some pictures around the house?

I did a study on this house when I was in high school. The house is truely haunted. I interviewed the 90ish year old owner of the residence. I have not been there in about 10years I can’t tell you if she is still living or not at this point. The owner of the homes name is not Nicholson, Nicholson was the original owner of the home. He was involved in import and export of goods by way of flat bottom push boats. To my knowledge the owner of the house is the Gant Family and has been for about 100yrs now. The elderly widow Gant lived in the home alone. The house was built on top of a Native American Burial Mound. From the front side the house sits about 2-3ft off the ground in classic Acadian style with the front porch that runs along the front of the whole house. 1 and 1/2 stories tall with a steap pitched roof. From the back of the house the stands about 10-12ft off the ground. During the Civil War the Confederate Army used the home for “The Cause” as they called it. The house was near the bayou and they knew the Yankees would take a water approch. They cut shooting lanes into the foundation of the house so they could fire on Yankees without being seen and considering the walls of the foundation were about 2ft thick they were great protection from return fire. The main floor of the house was used as quarters and offices of Confederate Officers. The upper floor was used as an military hospital. And there is truth to the blood stain on the floor I have seen it and over the years they attemped to clean it actually with great sucess, well at least for the day. The next morning the stain would have reappeared. Now when it comes to ghosts in the house; I believe it! Mrs. Gant advised her husband gave them the house shortly after they were married. The house was used as a rental property but they never could keep a tenant. She told me stories of the remodeling of the house; trying to clean the blood stains and removing lead slugs from the plaster walls. She told tales of waking from naps to find the soldier standing her bed watching her. She told me she never felt threatened by him more protected. She told me of an incident some time in the 1970’s when she had two young boys wanting to pick pecans in the back yard. She left them to the task and shortly after heard noises under the house. She found boys under house digging into the mound. They had uncovered arrowheads and clay pots and such. She scolded the children gave them each an arrowhead and sent them on their way. she reburied the remaining items. After this multiple people reported experiences with what they believed to the spirit of the deceased Native American that was disturbed by the juveniles. It was told to me that one man suffered a heart attack after entering the basement and seeing a large face coming at him quickly. Others reported large hands coming at them. Mrs. Gant consulted an old Cajun Treater or Healer and she advised her to put all items back in the mound and the spirit would rest. Well she never saw the boys again so she never could get the arrowheads back. So the house claims another spirit. The Native American never came up into the living space of the house; he always stayed underneath and the Civil War soldier never left the living space of the house. There is one room on the main level that I always refer to as “The Cold Room” when I saw it it was used as an office. It was said that woman entered this room a non-believe suddenly began screaming and was struck blind. It was not until sometime later when she was convienced the only way to possible to restore her sight was to re-enter the room, she did and again started screaming but her sight was restored. To this day its said that woman will not speak of what she saw in that room on either day, she was alone in the room both times. Mrs. Gant told me that they have a trap door in the room that leads to the basement. I made the decision that I would not enter that room. This was after my experience in the front parlor. The lady of the house had trouble getting around so she sent me into the front parlor for an article spread that she kept on a large table in this rarely used front room. It was winter the room was cold and dark. She had a saddle positioned on a stand near the stairs that lead upstairs. A large antique wooden table strewn with trinkets, antiques, and articles from the houses history. By the way thats the nickname of the house, The House of History. Their was a large wooden rocker in the corner near the front door. A large hall tree loomed on the other side of the front door with a large smokey mirror. I got the articles and continued my conversations with the lady of the house. I as my predecessor had brought along a tape recorder to get the whole conversation down and with high hopes of a possible EVP recording. Just like in her case, the tape recorder didn’t work. When I speak of my predecessor, I speak of my mentor, Christine Word, A native of Lafayette, Louisiana. She is the acclaimed author of “Ghost Along the Bayou”. I thought I would up the annie with the spirits of Nicholson House, I had tested the recorded and had extra batteries. When pulled up at the house I checked the recorder, in perfect working order. When I started the tape in the house, the lady of the house laughed and said “its not going to work”. And she was right, nothing, as if it didn’t even have batteries in it. I had intentally left the extra batteries in the car. I excused myself when I got the car I tried it and it worked. Just make the effort I changed the batteries and tested again. When I got back in the house, the recorder worked. Later at home on play back the tape was blank other than my testing at the begining. After We had finished our chat I returned to the front parlor to return the articles to the table. I made it about half way across the room when something stopped me in my tracks. The rocking chair in the corner began rocking as if someone had gotten up from sitting in it. Then I felt something brush my left shoulder, like a stranger would in passing in a narrow space. Up until then I had seen things in my past but never felt. This brushed feeling sent shivers down my spine, goose bumps, and terribly cold feeling to the bone in my left shoulder. Yes I know the room was cold but it was a different kind of cold, it hurt and only in the one shoulder. I heard the lady of the house from the back parlor ask me what was wrong, she could see me through the french doors with thin lace curtains that seperated the two rooms. I told her what happened still not moving from the spot that I was standing in. She told me you scared him, much more than your scared of him. She told me just put the items down and come back your fine. I put the items back on the table and when I turned around to start back across the room I noticied something different in the room. On the back side of the staircase was a closet door; it stood adjacent to the front door. On first trip into the room the door was closed with the small slide bolt lock. This time the door was about 2-3 inches open and slide bolt lock was unlocked. No one was in the house other myself and Mrs. Gant. She explained way the door event as a common occurance, “He slams doors all the time” she said laughing. “He’s letting you know he’s around”. After the 1970’s Mrs. Gant avoided the basement as much as possible, but the spirit inside the house became more of a roommate and companion after her children moved away and her husband passed. I had several visits with keeper of the house of history over a course of months and still I never went back in the front parlor, never went into the office, and never had even a thought of entering the basement. I live not far from the house. Everytime I pass in front of it, I look all around it to see if I can see anything unusual or anybody watching me threw the upstairs window. I haven’t came across anything strange yet, but who knows, maybe one day I’ll be back on this site posting a story of my own up.

where is it in washington like road street address??

It’s on main street on the corner but I forget the cross street now and I live so far away now I can’t run out there and check it, but basically its on the west side of main st on the south west corner. its a white house with a front porch across the front the house still a few feet off the ground with a brick encloser on underneth. It’s a one story house with a 1/2 story 2nd floor in the attic roof line. There is a large two car car port on the back side of the house that has a driveway on the side street. They have several pecan trees on the property. The house sits on a hill so the back side is a good 8-10 feet off the ground.thats about all I can recall of it.

I really like reading your story Ross, but get this I’m from Louisiana and i have never heard about this house. As I was reading it I felt like i was there with you. Even though I have never been there it sounds true to me.

I guess next time I go home for a visit I will get the address and maybe set up a meet up in Washington to tell stories.
