Real Haunted House

Officer’s Quarters

Fort Huachuca, Arizona

Built in the 1850s, the first post hospital was named the Carleton House, after Colonel James Carleton. More than one hundred fifty years ago, a woman named Charlotte gave birth to a stillborn son; she died a few days later. Angry that her son did not receive a proper burial, Charlotte still haunts the building. Now used as a residence for officers and their families, many have reported strange happenings. Some families claim that their pets go berserk during the night, while others report a cold spot affectionately known as “Charlotte’s Corner.” Legend has it that this spot is located near the staircase that once led to the morgue. Some have even seen Charlotte, who is described as a tall, beautiful blonde who wears long flowing gowns.

Perhaps Eleanor Frawley should take her own advice. She used past tense and present tense in the same sentence.

I LIVED IN SIERRA VISTA FOR ALL BUT ONE YEAR OF MY LIFE THE MAJORITY OF THE OFFICER HOUSES ARE HAUNTED BUT THAT ONE IS THE MOST. I ALSO HEAR THAT ONE IS ABOUT THE ONLY ONE THAT WILL NOT BE REMODLED…THERE ARE ALOT OF PLACES ON POST THAT ARE HAUNTED.

ok, as for carleton house the tales of activity you’ve all stated are correct, however; those who believe the house will not be remodeled may be shocked to learn that the house is currently under renovation.

The activity in question was most notably documentd by Col. Strom (ret) a former resident who still works on the post as a civilian.

Many of the homes and buildings on fort huachuca are supposedly haunted. Not just from the activities of the army throughout history, but from the numerous indian wars that occured throughout the region prior to the post being established in 1888.

I lived on Fort Huachuca about 20 years ago and hear the same exact stories. My mom would drive us by the house every halloween just to try to scare us!

I recently visited Ft. Huachuca over the summer with my parents. Since my father is good friends with the M.I. Corps Command Sergeant Major there and he told us of the numerous ghost stories of Ft. Huachuca. If I am not mistaken, I was told that this was the house with the rocking chair? I believe the story is that when you sign for this house under military housing, there is a rocking chair that comes with the house and in the contract, it is made clear not to move it. Otherwise, the ghost(s) of Charleton House get rather upset, but I cannot be sure. All I know is that when I was told this, I was terrified. We were staying in army lodging, and I it quite difficult to sleep, as well as my siblings. It seems that entire area is full of paranormal. All the way from Ft. Huachuca to Tombstone. It’s a rather scary place which I have no desire to return. I suppose I’m just a terrified teenager.

In 1985, I lived in this house for one year. I was a senior in high school and my bedroom was in what was once the morgue. Our family did experience quite a few stange things during our stay in this house and since this time I believe in ghosts. In the living room, we kept a rocking chair for Charlotte and she did rock and knit. The piece she was knitting grew even though nobody in the house knew how to knit. The dog acted a little strange around her corner and the light in her corner would work only during daytime even though all four lights were connected to the same switch. At night, only at night and every night only three of the four overhead lights worked. One morning in winter we woke up to a freezing house and found all the windows in the living room wide open. There was often a strange mist in the bathroom even though nobody had showered. I am pretty sure my father saw Charlotte once but he won’t admit it today. The only time I was extremely scared was when I heard knocking coming from inside my closet. I usually slept with the closet door open because it had a light in it and at the time I was a little afraid of the dark. One night I felt very silly about sleeping with the light on and shut the closet door. The knocking woke me up, and after turning all the lights and the TV on I opened the closet door only to find nothing strange. I didn’t get my parents because to get to them I had to go through the living room. Once I went downstairs for the night I usually stayed there. I liked my room though because I had my own bathroom, fireplace and door to the house. Other interesting things happened in that house but I don’t have time to write about all of them. I will say that Charlotte was never bad to us and she really was there just because she missed her baby and overall I’m happy I lived there. I think one of the best parts about living there was at Halloween I got to dress up like Charlotte, parade back and forth in front of the windows and scare everyone on the block.

I read Teri’s post with great interest because I also lived in that house temporarily while my father was stationed there. Teri must have moved in right after us, because my father was there in the early ‘80s. ‘Charlotte’ wasn’t mean or malicious, but there were several occurrences that can’t be explained. Light switches would turn on and off, her corner of the room was VERY cold at times, we also experienced the ‘mist’ in the bathroom, and those are only a few. My sister and I stayed in the bedroom downstairs (the old morgue) while my youngest sister had a bedroom upstairs. My family has more stories than I do since I was only there for a few months, and they stayed for a few years.

Ok, so not one of you, even those who lived there, have explained ‘where’ the house is. I live on Ft. Huachuca, in the officer housing, but have never seen or heard of a ‘charlston house’. Sorry to kill everyone’s fantasy, but I think that is all this is…

I do believe you either have the wrong address or they changed the building number…(It’s 22104) And yes, I have a picture of the house. Now, after taking other pictures, I’ve been informed that you can be arrested by MPs if you don’t have permission from HQ. I have exerienced things at Ft Huachuca… Got the freek out of my life the other day while taking pictures of a sign on the old porch to the old HQ across the street from the museum. While I was standing there. I heard laughter with mangled voices that sounded like they were comming from a static radio, and from right behind me while I was trying to take photos of the sign. It was the middle of the day and there were no children out in the 100+ weather. There was clear sky’s other then a small isolated lightning cloud that was hovering just on the moutain tops… My children were inside the car with a friend who says my kids weren’t making a sound, they were reading the whole time.
I live in Hereford by the San Pedro River…. I think there’s something up here because some of my pictures come out with a bunch of funny orbs and plasmas.. While others are perfectly fine. My children who lack immagination and are completely non-believers called me frantic one night. They had seen a dark body like figure standing on our couch. According to them, it picked up papers from the coffee table and threw them across the room at them. ( I saw the evidence of things being thrown all over the living room when I got home and found them in the closet hiding). It was dark, they were playing video games (WWE)and trust me when I say that even when they were left home watching spooky movies, we never had this happen… Ages 12 and almost 9 years old, we found them hiding with a flash light in their closet and a cell phone in their hand. No physical sightings sense, but the pictures are messed up sometimes on my digital camera for no reason. I have one that I took outside… In the background, in the side passenger mirror of my empty car… There is a pretty clear face of a dark bearded man…. My dogs will bark at corners for no reason day and night.. The gates that are closed and locked into place will be found wide open first thing in the mourning. (Not every nite).

I lived on Ft. Huachuca in the early 1980’s. I lived at “Bonnie Blink” housing area which was a little bit down the road from the Colonel’s Row.
I had heard stories about the officers hauntings but, our housing had it’s own. My ex often would hear someone “running” down the hallway and thought it was me; but I was asleep. When we were gone from home, neighbors would hear the doors and kitchen cabinets opening and closing. My cat used to do some “odd” things there too.

Ok, well i used to work for Means Design. Last year we worked on the Post Officers Quarters and this house i belive was knows as #9. I know much of you wont belive me, but i spent tons of hours in this house. Its the smallest of all. Its only one story and it has a basement. WITH A DOOR…you have to see it. Its a really neat house. Matter of fact, we actually had to cut a 3×3 whole in the wooden hallway floor to get to the foundation cause we had to fix the falling adobe. This house was also the one in the worst shape.

Anyways…in the basement, their open window that leads into the air ducts and a belive the heating system. Its cover by this HUGE mirror that we had to take off…

Me and my working buddies, Jeff, and Greg spent tons of hours here…

Ill tell you, i knew NOTHING about these haunted stories…but now that i think of it…THIS IS SOME SCARY STUFF.

THis was easily the most quiet house…you can hear EVERY creak in the old wooden floors. Not to mention there is a plack in the hallway that tells you it was used as a hospital for military men way back when. On top of the basement their is a HUGE living room with widows that allow you to see everything outside.

I ate my lunch in their numerous times…and my fav spot was on the staircase leading to the basement….oh god..im leterally getting goosebumps…i would eat….and take short naps..

and i would ALWAYS hear creeks up stairs and the basement door had the habbit of closing…”cause of wind”…

anywways…i would love to answer any questions bout this house…i now regret not ever taking any pictures…
