Real Haunted Houses

Real Haunted House

Old Farmhouse

Smyrna, Tennessee

Long ago, a doctor and his wife lived in the farmhouse. Tragically the wife fell ill and her husband vowed to take care of her. The woman died, however. Devastated, the doctor hanged himself. It is said that on some nights one may see a man in a white laboratory coat walking around the grounds of the farm.

I don’t think you people need to use that language.Do you understand that not only adults get on here.Kids do too considering that i’m one of them! Some of you people sound like you need to be on the Jerry Springer show.Have some common courtesy please!!!

nicole says:

April 1, 2006, 10:38 pm

Really. theres no reason to use such language. if you are going to be rude and obnoxious, go do it somewhere else. we are intelligent people that are trying to discuss some ghost stories. no explicit language needed. by the way, thats an interesting ghost story. i live in Tennessee, also. :)

Monkey Woman Bridge in Smyrna was one of the spookiest places I’ve ever been to. I went to school in Smyrna grad 73. It was the place to go if you wanted to scare anyone. The Monkey Woman would howl at you and either throw things at the car or swing over the car and hit it or scratch it.
sometimes she would have a baby doll hanging from her hand. I hope it was a doll.
The bridge was located on One Mile Lane, back then it was an over grown area. the Bridge itself was an old iron one lane bridge with wood flooring. Spooky to the max. Seems I remember tales of someone trying to shoot her, but, evidently did not hit her.

WOLFEEDEE says:

IS THIS BRIDGE STILL THERE, AN HAS THE NAME OF THE ROAD CHANGED?

I live not 1 mile from this house, it is on old house on jefferson pike right off florence. it is a pretty house. I dont know if the stories are true but it makes for a good mystery. My son wants me to go there and see if the story is true. I believe in ghost….. but they are not a good thing. What ever……. if this was a good story T.V would have already been here.

Marcus Dahl says:

I grew up in Smyrna & LaVergne, and had been to Monkey Woman bridge several times. The first time was at a house party that me and my friends played at for Halloween. Everybody there talked about the tale. So I decided to take the walk across with no one around. Nothing. The next couple of times after that I’d go out there with a couple of friends to go and drink and what not. Nothing. It was perfect cause no one would bother you out there. Anyhoo, I’ve experienced things in other places og Tennessee. A good place in White Ave. in Barry Hill from Nov. on to January. The battle of Nashville was in that area, but basically from 8th Ave over to Nolensville Rd. Murfreesboro’s Nathan Bedford Forrest was in that battle on that side of town.

Crystal says:

August 4, 2008, 10:35 pm

I live Smyrna but never visited either but knows there are many areas that are haunted some more than most including my home which was built on an old race track. The most haunted house I know of in Tennessee is not listed on here and only known by the people who live in Lebanon the town it is in. I lived next to this house for over 15 years and no one could live in it over 3 months. While the house was empty you would hear arguing in it and lights coming on without a meter. The house has caught fire five different times without any known cause. Not including many personal experiences that people have had in it. My dog would refuse walking on the property and barked at the house constantly.

britany says:

August 5, 2008, 12:12 am

omg crystal umm thats cool and umm i know where a nother one is it is right next to walmart on fortcamble blv. in clarksville tennessee and it is like soo weird cuz like every day there are windows that shadder and no one knows why there are no trees that are green there is no grass just dirt and there is like ghost suposivley that run around there cuz there was a little girl name becka that died there and she has been haunting it for a long time and when some one goes to look at it to buy it lights come on and there are nocks on da floor and no one ever moves in and the realestate people took the for sale sign down cuz it is so haunted and at night when you walk bye it you can hear becka sceaming help and hear other voices saying her name. it is wicked weird though!!!!

lynn hey i would like to know how far is that bridge as soon as you turn on to one mile ln cuz all i see on that rd are houses but on the left maybe a quarter of a mile down form where you turn left theres a big wall of tress with a hole cut out. i hope i have explained myself enough but if you could give me a response plz thanks

Travis says:

October 2, 2008, 5:23 pm

I live right down the street from “monkey woman bridge”. Loving ghostly things i am not trying to say its not true but nothing has ever happened to me on it. Too much traffic anymore to stop on it but have heard many stories about it. I have been driving over the bridge for 12 years now and have always gotten spooked by it but nothing to date has taken place. The bridge is very short and has a river underneath it. The name of the road has not changed and is very spooky at night. The unfortunate thing is unless you know that that is the bridge you will drive right over it and never know. Good hunting all.

Pft, that’s a fable. I lived in Windsor Downs apartment complex for a year, right beside where this “haunting” is. I went to the farm with my dad a couple of times – we didn’t use the road, there’s a shortcut near the tennis court. All I saw were horses and a dog, not to mention loads of cats. Someone lives there because my dad knows him from where he use to work. I went inside once to have breakfast with the guy (I’m not going to realease his name in order to preserve his privacy) along with my dad, and my father had apparently heard this too so he asked him about it jokingly. The guy confirmed that it was false and started laughing at what people believe nowadays.

Dreamfrost says:

September 12, 2009, 12:32 am

Oh, just so that everyone knows where this is just so they can see how crazy this idea is, it’s kinda next to/behind Windsor Downs apartments located on 1001 Mason Tucker Drive. The apartments are right across from the YMCA. And if you don’t know where the YMCA in Smyrna is.. Google it! c:

I grew up in a haunted house in lavergne, built in the early 40’s. on old jefferson pk. parents sold it in 95, wonder if it is still inhabited. Family and friends experienced many things there. The man that built it, went crazy and died there a few yrs before we moved there. It had been empty for yrs. We also found civil war relics in the field after plowing for garden. old cemetary beside the lot also. Lots of noises, lights and neighbors seeing things when we werent home. I would like to know if the people that have lived there had any experiences. Last i heard it was grew up, and the swimming pool had trees in it.

Tina says:

October 11, 2009, 3:00 pm

The old bridge off one mile lane is blocked off now and re routed 1/2 mile away. We used to drive across the bridge to get to baker rd. in 1975. I believe you could park and probably walk down to that bridge.(Off Almaville Rd.)

Tina says:

October 11, 2009, 3:09 pm

I live in a house that was built in 1946. An old man died in it in the 60’s. I moved there in 1978. I immediately felt like someone was standing behind me.Watching over me. At least 15 people have been in the basement with me when the upstairs door was locked and heard footsteps across the upstairs floor. I experience hearing someone running down my stairs during the day. My assistant has heard that also. I have often felt a hand on my shoulder as I worked and she has also. I sense it is fairly benevolent. Watching over us during the day. I don’t experience any noises at night tho.

MICK says:

October 12, 2009, 1:58 pm

Tina your home sounds alot like the one i grew up in. But we moved into the house in 76, and my parents sold in 95, there was a basement there also. Even after i had been moved out for yrs. I would visit and have experiences. I also have a couple of pics showing mist around family members at holidays. There was 10 acres of land also. With lots of history on it. and yes, we grew up with the monkey woman bridge story, and went there as a teenager,. but the fate sanders one is new to me.

Tina says:

November 6, 2009, 4:17 pm

Mick…I would not mind if you did some evp work at my house but my husband says nooooo. He does not believe in anything paranormal and he always has an explanation for everything. I’m sorry.

tina says:

November 6, 2009, 4:30 pm

Monkey woman bridge is still there .There are a row of new house right next to the road…Almaville rd. then a small paved road goes off into a wooded area. I tried to follow it but a man in one of the houses came outside and waved his arms at me.So I abandoned my adventure. But I think the old metal one lane bridge is still there.

Just incase anyone is interested, the is a cemetary in Smyrna, I THINK it’s called Maple or something. Anyway, it is in the middle of Smyrna just past the rotary soccer park. My family and I went one night with a digital recorder. We were talking and asking questions. My daughter walked on a different path than us and suddenly came running back. On the middle of the road (not near any trees or anything) we watched scrathes form on her upper arm. When we got home, we listened to the recorder. As we were walking past a fresh grave, on the recorder we heard other voices. It was really cool.

I am a historic fanatic and have been working on a short history of Smyrna TN. In looking up families and areas of interest, I have come across many family cemeteries as well as stories of hauntings. I’ve also worked with a small group of individuals who have traveled the areas looking into paranormal activities. I’ve had numerous occurrences on the Monkey Woman bridge, Stones River National Battlefield, Fate Sanders, the farm house area (prior to 1991), and the Sam Davis Home. The worst places of hauntings have been documented along Murfreesboro square in the courthouses as well as the houses that have been around since before the civil war. Not to mention the cemetery near the old Murfreesboro hospital. My next project, once I am done with the Smyrna history, is a book of hauntings in the Rutherford County area.

Mu says:

April 16, 2011, 12:27 pm

I lived in Smyrna at one time and in Rutherford county most of my life, but this is the first time I heard of this story. Interesting. I also think they should put Stones River Battlefield in the Tennessee section here. I always heard stuff about the soldiers and other ghosts out there.

Mike says:

February 3, 2012, 5:36 pm

It is located on the left at the intersection of Sam ridely and Blair rd. I would recommend walking up the drive way, for it is rather steep. Not to mention the house is private property and the family of the doctor own it so of you get caught they will ask you to leave. I went up there one night with a friend. The house is very aged no maintenance and is missing the front door.

Nick Caffrey says:

June 6, 2012, 10:48 pm

After a while , I have decided to take a look at my ghost story…
Yes! I wrote this story! it is 99.9% true! My grandmother still lives across the street! we haven’t heard from any people who lived in the house , But i do know that there hasn’t been a steady living family in the house for a fairly long time! since the farm is not there it destroys the fun.
People have tried to come bye and tour ,But people never can! And weird thing is there was a death caused by illness in one of the houses closest to the lot of the farm. I will keep you posted , Its been a while :)
