Real Haunted House

Old Zane Mansion

Martins Ferry, Ohio

This mansion is located on the site of an old cemetery. Constantly, the town and cemetery were being flooded, thus they were both moved to another location. When the coffins were moved, it is said that Hannah Zanes was empty. The house, which used to be an occult and a bordello, is now said to be haunted by Hannah.. There have been reports of her walking up and down the halls and dancing in the living room. There have also been reports of a small child staring out of the window on the stairwell. Others have alleged being able to feel on womans hand rubbing on their shoulder only to turn around and find no one there.

Helga I have pics of a house believed to be the Old Zane Mansion in Martins Ferry, Ohio. I went yesterday a couple times and took pics inside and out. I uploaded the pics to my PC and caught some images of what seems to be a few ppl watching me out windows and a pic of a face looking out of a fireplace. You can contact me at SwtGMeno87@sbcglobal.net if you’re interested in more info

I once lived in that house..That’s where I met my husband. My daughter, Rachelle and I lived there in 1994 for almost a year. My husband lived in the apartment down the hall from me. I lived in te one upstairs to the left. I don’t recall having any problems there but my sister said that I use to complain about noises all night long. I don;t realy remember…I had a slum landlord so i probably thought that it was just the neighbors…anyways I’m glad I moved there because thats where I fell in love with my husband.

we just went there just last weekend “June 2006″ but it was extremly late at night because my husband’s band was playing at a bar up there and we had friends who were freaking out because they said they saw a dark shadow and with all their screaming we had to leave before the police came but anyone who has pics that would like to share or exchange please email me and it can be arranged. lipstikk_n_leather@hotmail.com

Georgette its right across the street from the Church.. you can not miss it because its all run down and destroyed with no thanx to the squadder’s that lived in it and destroyed it.. I really wish there could be a way to save that house and get it fixed up with or without the haunting’s

Lynn says:

June 15, 2006, 2:05 pm

I would Love to see T.A.P.S go there to investigate but I don’t think they would beable to handle it and they would probly run out real quick..
Especially with all the negetivity they bring in with their investigation’s (back stabbing and all) they would be easy prey for the one spirit that I have encountered there who isn’t so nice and he does Truelly touch you as he did with me and my husband..
this house isn’t a joke.. it is truelly alive.

I rode past that house a few times, And I saw a Shadowy figure standing by the Mansion everytime I ride past there my mom saw it a couple times too. Also I saw some kids walking by the house And the shadowy women like figure Walking right behind them then I blinked then she vanished.

Lynn says:

August 18, 2006, 12:26 pm

We went back to the mansion about a month and half ago after my fiance’s bands show that they had up there. we had three other friend’s with us and we just walked into the front door and into Apt #1 and two of my friends started screaming and ran out yelling that they saw the tall dark figure that my fiance was haunted by when he lived in the mansion.

The female that Jake stanley posted about is “Hannah” she look’s out for the children, one is a boy and one is a girl, the children’s death is somehow connected to that house, I Think they were either buried on the land when it was indeed a cementary or they drowned in the flood back in the 1800’s. I forgot the story surrounding their deaths went but my fiance’s ex wife knows the hisorty and & the children’s names.
she & my fiance did an investigation when they were together and my fiance did he own investigation when he was going through the haunting’s in the mansion.

If you wnat anymore information or if you just want to chat about the mansion then please feel free to email me because I would love to keep in touch with anyone who vistis the mansion and or if you have any recent photo’s that you can send me. I can also tell you what room’s are the most haunted in that house.

well we live in martins ferry and there are soo many rumors about that house that it is haunted and whatever soo one day britt went there with some of her friends and she said that she had seen a face sittin in the fireplace,.. and a little girl and her dad standin in the big window downstairs,. and then in the basement she said that she heard noises.,, and the dark door upstairs slams after you enter the room and you cannot open it from the inside,. then my grandmother used to live in wane l hanes towers,. and we would always look out the window and there would be lights on and there wasnt anyone livin there at the time,. then when people lived there this one couple had rot whilers and they would run up and down the hallways scratchin the walls and doors but when you took them outside they would be fine,. this is honestly true and is in no way a lie so if anyone says that it is they should get in contact with us and we will take them the way we know,..

oh and in the attick there are old pictures and stuff but you have to be careful when you go up there cause the steps are fallin in,. and when its dark you can see shadowy figures walk through the house,. and the dad, mom , and daughter will walk with you when you walk past the house but they dont cross the street or anything just to the corner,.

My mother and I went to visit this house that we heard was haunted when we lived in the area back in 1995.
While there, I felt a draft of cold air when I walked into certain rooms, and I saw a shadow of a person following behind us as we walked throughout the house.
We left when I was too scared to stay.

Lynn says:

October 25, 2006, 2:48 pm

This is Lynn again .. I am the person who orginally got this story online…To The Person who said that they talked to the historian and the historian said that tts not the house… it is the house… The Zane’s lived in that house while their main mansion was being built in Zanesville… My Fiance had a book that proved the location of the house and the whole story about it but when he moved he lost the book.. there was also a sister house of the mansion.. I do not know the exact location but the owners changed the exterior appearence of the house….

Their are 2 child spirits in the house.. one boy, one girl. they died in the land.
if anyone would like to discuss and compare stories just email me.. lipstikk_n_leather@hotmail.com

I’ve been to the house a few times. It has a new owner and the doors are boarded up.

Richard says:

September 3, 2007, 8:03 pm

I think this story is confused with Wheeling Island. Martins Ferry doesn’t constantly flood and the location of the house is not in a flood area. Hannah and her husband Jonathon, never lived in Martins Ferry but did live on Wheeling Island.

Lynn says:

September 13, 2007, 4:13 pm

Richard
I’m not talking about Wheeling Island, I know Wheeling Island Floods all the time, you have to remember that we are talking about an different era of time, back in the 1800’s. It was the Zane’s Temp HOme while their Real Mansion was being built.
Here is the address for all that is interested
and for pictures email me at lipstikk_n_leather@hotmail.com

It stands at 210 South Third Street

Lynn says:

September 17, 2007, 12:57 pm

I am just taking some time to clear a couple of thing’s up as far as the era of when the zane’s occupied this home.

This Mansion was a “temporary home” for the Zane Family while their historic “Zane Mansion” was being built. There was at one time a TWIN MANSION on Wheeling Island but the twin mansion no longer looks the same and was remodeled.

NOw as far as the Book Goes that had the photo’s of the mansion in it. I have no idea what the book was titled but what I do know is that His Friend Bought him the old Book in a Book store.
Not every Librarian knows all the history of their surrounding area. New Thing’s are learned every day about our past’s.
Now I have a few pics of the house on my “myspace site” in a folder called” Ghost’s
Please look for the images there thank you.

What is the new owner doing to the place? I liked living there,..teh only problem I had like i said in my previous post was the landlord. I lived in 2 different apartments there,..The one at teh top fron left (with the door leading to nowhere ourside) and then down the hall last apartment on right hand side. BOth were upstairs. When they devided the house upstairs to make several apartments it was done very shabby and so the noises I thought I heard i belived came from the other apartments,..who knows now?? I hate to see that it was never taken care of because it really was a nice place inside.

Lynn says:

October 19, 2007, 8:19 am

Dawn from what I have heard the new owners are going to fix it up and i guess rent the apartments out again. My Finace lived in top two apartments on the left. He was the one who knocked down the wall in the one room to extend the apartment.
I will be concerned for anyone who moves in there after the restoration.

Chad says:

I lived in that Apartment building when I was a kid and can definately tell you that its haunted. I didnt know about its history until just now. I used the see a shadow figure at the end of the hall going toward another room. Thinking it was my Mom, I would go and find nobody there. I thought I heard someone calling my name, again not my Mother. Me and a friend saw a face in the mirror while we were havig a sleepover on the living room floor. I always had a feeling someone would be coming out of the fireplace. I remember having alot of really bad dreams there also. I get chills thinking about it now.

Whispered Tales of the Ohio Valley says:

December 29, 2007, 10:00 pm

First I’d like to say thank you to Lynn for helping us find the exact location of the’mansion.’ I’m writing a book about the local Ohio Valley, it’s hauntings, forgotten history and legends. The ‘Haunted Zane Mansion’ has been a favorite of mine to research and I thought you all may be interested in what I’ve discovered. I’d like to clarify that this is historical record. The Zanes were buried in Wheeling and that cemetery did flood. But due to the fast growth of the city, the cemetery was removed as were the bodies. The Zanes were moved to Walnut Grove in Martins Ferry. Hannah Zane SHOULD be buried there as well but she isn’t. So yes, there is a question as to what happened to her body. I too have some interesting photos of the mansion, one in particular looks like a child in the window of the stairwell :) If you’d like to know more you can read the book when it comes out. It will also have personal experiences from those who lived in the mansion. For more information you can check out http://www.myspace.com/whisperedtalesov

My friends and I have been inside this place to investigate the allegid hauntings. Although we didn’t find anything paranormal (we thought we did, but it turned out to be a cat), the place does give off a very eerie feeling. I wouldn’t say either way that it’s haunted or not. We didn’t experience anything, but then again we weren’t in there long. It’s a pretty public place to try to get into. There are houses on either side as well as an apartment building. The doors and most of the windows have been boarded shut. It’s really a great place though. If you decide to go, just be careful.

The house has been currently been fixed up by the current owners, and have no worries, the inside of the house has been well preserved. The house has been painted black within the past few months as well. As far the story of Hannah’s missing body, remains were found by a tree in the front yard and left there, leaving the owners to believe it is Hannah’s body. While some of the neighbors seem rather superstitious of the place (especially with the hallowe’en decorations and the black paint), most of their stories seem like unlikely. As far as the house being haunted, even the current owners believe it is.

The Zane family was one of the founders of Martins Ferry. Betty is honored annually within our town for her heroic actions by delivering gun powder to Ft. Henry and saved the future of our history in her efforts.
I have been born and raised here and currently live 2 blocks from the Zane Mansion. I have served my town by working with the volunteer Fire Department after graduating from Martins Ferry High School (another part of our history that has been leveled to the ground). I am ecstatic that the Zane Mansion has been restored and would love the opportunity to tour the Mansion of our founders. If this would be at possible, please feel free to contact me at the following email address: ricklkimble@comcast.net. Would someone tell me exactly where this so called mansion stood on third street. According to some readers it was suppose to be still standing in 1995. The zane burial grounds never had a mansion standing on it. The city used it for burial. It was part of an walnut grove. The zanes were orginally buried in Wheeling Wv. And were reburied in what was the Martin’s burial plots. The graves have a wall built around them. I have lived in Martins Ferry all my life and this is the first time I have ever heard about Hannah Zane living in a house that was once a cathouse or a mansion. I think the home people are talking about was the Haines House that sat on third street. It was torn down last year, the people who bought it let it fall in.

After reading some of these posts i am inclined to post again, when Martins Ferry was founded it was down by the river. Their graveyard was on the hill. When they decided to move the town up on the hill, they moved the graveyard, where this building/mansion sits is upon the old graveyard. (Researce it, it is hard to find but, i did so it it there to find) The origional post of this house is based on me and my experiences there. If I knew how to contact the others that lived there when i did they could tell you also (although most where scared to talk about it). I have heard the place has a new owner now, good for them, i hope they restore it as the sister house on the island was. This place is not a joke or a hoax, if you can still get into there go with an open mind and a lot of film, they are all around you there. I lived in apt 6 and then 4 and then took the wall out between them and ocupied both apartments. you can go there in daylight and see them or at night…I am just happpy to hear someone is taking care of the place….i have a piece of it still today (from apt 4). Respect them all, except the one in black!!!!!!!! he will hurt you if he can….. (no i am not mental or anything you may think, just lived there and know)

If you go to my myspace and look at my photo album titled “Haunted places and abandoned buildings”, you will find a couple pics of the mansion. Also if you look at the “Photos that make you go hmmmmm from the Ohio Valley” album, you will find a couple of pics, one that looks like a small child looking out the window.

Michael, where did you find the information about the cemetery being orginally on the hill? I’ve done a lot of research on the history and cemeteries of Martins Ferry but have never seen this. Lee, you are correct about the Zanes being moved from Wheeling to Walnut Grove Cemetery but this cemetery is not the site the mansion is on and apparently isn’t the same cemetery at all but as I mentioned, I’ve found nothing to indicate there was ever a cemetery on this land and this land surely didn’t flood as the original story mentions. Even with some of the largest floods the valley has had, it was NEVER that high.

I just got back from visiting family in Martin’s Ferry. I am very interested in hauntings and ghosts, so I knew I wanted to see Moundsville prison and Zanes Mansion while I was in the area. My mother and I had no problem finding the mansion, although we could find no visible address on the curb or building. We asked the elderly couple next door if we were in the right place, they said we were and even told us some stories about other people showing up to take pictures and such. The man we talked to said he has lived next door for 37 years and has never experienced anything out of the ordinary. We did take some pictures from the outside but didn’t want to trespass into the house. Some of our pictures seem to have strange things or faces in the windows. The place has ivy growing over alot of it and alot of the windows are boarded up or just not there, the front door is also just a piece of plywood.

Well, my husband and I are living in France, but I am from Ferry. We went to visit for a few weeks and ended up in the haunted house with my cousin and his wife.
We videotaped the whole experience. I did not feel any entities there…but something very strange did happen. When we were all about to go upstairs to follow my cousin who was already up the stairs, we noticed (all four of us) that we were covered with fleas! I mean COVERED! Did this happen to anyone else?? It was strange because how do the fleas live if there are no hosts in the house? We left in a hurry and discovered ourselves bit up everywhere. We found it hilarious, but then again it was strange to have so many fleas all over us so quickly.
I am not about to return because of the fleas – we thought maybe it was normal because there was one dead cat in the basement or maybe the ghosts didn’t want us there or to go upstairs. What do you guys think? Email me at nissadance@yahoo.com

I am a local historian and there was never a cemetery at the site of the house mentioned and this place is not any where near a flood level.

Dear Travos,
my bf lived there and when he worked at Strambolis one of the workers there said he had a book that showed the house he lived in (the mansion) back in the early days. the book showed martins ferry when it was on the other side of rt 7 down by the river and the graveyard was on the hill in one photo, and then said how they moved the town on the hill after many years of flooding and having to rebuild. when they started to move the town the graveyard was moved across town, this is documented in other books as well. the next photo showed the mansion and one other home that would be on what is today south 3rd street. the mansion was built on the same site that it previously showed the graveyard being at.
Trust me when I say that there is “a book” out there that shows the original layout of the area. my bf lived in the mansion and when he was going through all of the haunt’s, just as the rest of the tenants who lived there then were.. his friend had a book about the history of Martins Ferry “Before and after” I Believe.. and it described the location.I am from New Jersey and I knew Nothing about the mansion or its History, I Only knew of what my bf told me about it (The haunting) and the first time I went there is an experience that I will never forget, I walked into that run down house with the idea that my BF was Full of **** but after awhile of being in there I can say & and admit that he wasn’t full of **** because I experienced a lot of evil there but yet I also felt the souls of the children in there as well and I felt them, I dreamt about them as well.
if you have any questions or comments then please feel free to send them me or comment on here, we have nothing to hide, we just want to show the dark truth & History of The Old Zane Mansion.

i use to live in the old betty zane mansion.they turned the building into apartments,i use to live in the upstairs as soon as you reached the top steps was my door and my dad lived behind me in the same building just different apartment.i have visioned a woman dancing in my living room and sometimes with a man.you can feel energy in there.you know your not alone.i have had experiences throughout the house not just in my apartment.i had friends who lived across the hall and down stairs.they have all told me about experiences they had.never did i know that was the betty zane mansion til after i moved out.i honestly didnt know that was the place til 2003.i moved from there in 97….but i knew that the place had a history and we was never the only ones there.i have a gifted side and can sense things that are not normal.but never knew the whole time i lived there, but i did sense the ballroom and everything.it was like i was flashed back in time was how i felt.one other episode that happened to me was,i was doin laundry and was passing by my bedroom carrying a basket of clothes.something caught my eye in my room where my vanity and dresser mirrors were.i saw the image of a young woman with long dark hair, sitting at my vanity brushing her hair.i thought one of my friends came in and was waiting for me,when i stopped and looked in to call her,she was gone.noone was there.but there was a mist of some sort moving around thru the room til it hit the sunlight in front of the window.but you can smell a lingering perfume in there from time to time.

Zane Mansion was on Wheeling Island. It did flood there but where you speak of was never a cemtery nor did it ever flood.

I’ve heard some stories about this mansion in Ohio. Some of my friends are planning to visit the location and I’m excited to come with them.

Anybody asking about some haunted mansion, get updated by ken Hudnall’s blog – http://kenhudnallshow.com/blog/

Been reading the haunted houses he features regularly. I am looking forward the Old Zane mansion could be featured as well.

Omg.What are you guys talking about? The Old Zane mansion was torn down in the late 90’s and is now the hospital parking lot.The 210 South 3rd st address was a bunch of apartments at one time and has nothing to do with the Zanes.

Sorry guys but the Zane mansion was where the old Elm School used to be. Go to the Sedgwick House and ask someone who actually knows. Don’t believe every little story you hear on the web.

Chuck says:

It’s ridiculous to believe that the place you’re speaking of flooded. The Zanes were all buried in Wheeling but later moved to Walnut Grove. Walnut Grove and Riverview are and were the only cemeteries in Martins Ferry.

Chuck says:

Correction. Only cemeteries in that area of Martins Ferry.

The mansion is now tore down. The people next door think the ghosts may have moved into their place. Hope to do an investigation soon. Check out Whispered Tales of the Ohio Valley on facebook for pics and updates.

I grew up in Martins Ferry, and the only factual part of this story is that the place is said to be haunted. Everything else is ****, and I don’t know how such misinformation gets started. It wasn’t a “Zane Mansion” just an apartment building. And it wasn’t prone to frequent flooding. In fact, only one flood in recorded history would have even come close to where this building sits (or sat). I believe in ghosts, and I love a good ghost story, but do we have to make up a bunch of untruths to tell one?

Sandra says:

BJ I agree, this story is way out there. What this story claims is impossible. I wonder how you can say the haunting is factual. If you can prove it’s factual you’d be a very rich person. No one has yet to prove hauntings as fact.
