Old Zane Mansion
This mansion is located on the site of an old cemetery. Constantly, the town and cemetery were being flooded, thus they were both moved to another location. When the coffins were moved, it is said that Hannah Zanes was empty. The house, which used to be an occult and a bordello, is now said to be haunted by Hannah.. There have been reports of her walking up and down the halls and dancing in the living room. There have also been reports of a small child staring out of the window on the stairwell. Others have alleged being able to feel on womans hand rubbing on their shoulder only to turn around and find no one there.

The house has been currently been fixed up by the current owners, and have no worries, the inside of the house has been well preserved. The house has been painted black within the past few months as well. As far the story of Hannah’s missing body, remains were found by a tree in the front yard and left there, leaving the owners to believe it is Hannah’s body. While some of the neighbors seem rather superstitious of the place (especially with the hallowe’en decorations and the black paint), most of their stories seem like unlikely. As far as the house being haunted, even the current owners believe it is.

The Zane family was one of the founders of Martins Ferry. Betty is honored annually within our town for her heroic actions by delivering gun powder to Ft. Henry and saved the future of our history in her efforts.
I have been born and raised here and currently live 2 blocks from the Zane Mansion. I have served my town by working with the volunteer Fire Department after graduating from Martins Ferry High School (another part of our history that has been leveled to the ground). I am ecstatic that the Zane Mansion has been restored and would love the opportunity to tour the Mansion of our founders. If this would be at possible, please feel free to contact me at the following email address: ricklkimble@comcast.net. Any consideration would be greatly appreciated and considered a privilege and an honor.

In addition to the last request, if there are any pictures to add to my history collection, it would be greatly appreciated also.

I drive past the Zane mansion frequently. It has not been painted black. As far as being well preserved, that’s questionable. Patricia, where did you ever hear that Hannah’s remains were in a tree?????

Okay what is up with people saying the house is black. I live in Ferry and have never seen it painted black. The Halloween decorations on the other hand are. I want to know if anyone can send me pictures of the house WITH possible ghost sightings in the picture. Please let me know, thanks. If someone would reply to this I will be notified by email, my address is pippi00@hotmail.com

Would someone tell me exactly where this so called mansion stood on third street. According to some readers it was suppose to be still standing in 1995. The zane burial grounds never had a mansion standing on it. The city used it for burial. It was part of an walnut grove. The zanes were orginally buried in Wheeling Wv. And were reburied in what was the Martin’s burial plots. The graves have a wall built around them. I have lived in Martins Ferry all my life and this is the first time I have ever heard about Hannah Zane living in a house that was once a cathouse or a mansion. I think the home people are talking about was the Haines House that sat on third street. It was torn down last year, the people who bought it let it fall in.

After reading some of these posts i am inclined to post again, when Martins Ferry was founded it was down by the river. Their graveyard was on the hill. When they decided to move the town up on the hill, they moved the graveyard, where this building/mansion sits is upon the old graveyard. (Researce it, it is hard to find but, i did so it it there to find) The origional post of this house is based on me and my experiences there. If I knew how to contact the others that lived there when i did they could tell you also (although most where scared to talk about it). I have heard the place has a new owner now, good for them, i hope they restore it as the sister house on the island was. This place is not a joke or a hoax, if you can still get into there go with an open mind and a lot of film, they are all around you there. I lived in apt 6 and then 4 and then took the wall out between them and ocupied both apartments. you can go there in daylight and see them or at night…I am just happpy to hear someone is taking care of the place….i have a piece of it still today (from apt 4). Respect them all, except the one in black!!!!!!!! he will hurt you if he can….. (no i am not mental or anything you may think, just lived there and know)

If you go to my myspace and look at my photo album titled “Haunted places and abandoned buildings”, you will find a couple pics of the mansion. Also if you look at the “Photos that make you go hmmmmm from the Ohio Valley” album, you will find a couple of pics, one that looks like a small child looking out the window.
Michael, where did you find the information about the cemetery being orginally on the hill? I’ve done a lot of research on the history and cemeteries of Martins Ferry but have never seen this. Lee, you are correct about the Zanes being moved from Wheeling to Walnut Grove Cemetery but this cemetery is not the site the mansion is on and apparently isn’t the same cemetery at all but as I mentioned, I’ve found nothing to indicate there was ever a cemetery on this land and this land surely didn’t flood as the original story mentions. Even with some of the largest floods the valley has had, it was NEVER that high.

I just got back from visiting family in Martin’s Ferry. I am very interested in hauntings and ghosts, so I knew I wanted to see Moundsville prison and Zanes Mansion while I was in the area. My mother and I had no problem finding the mansion, although we could find no visible address on the curb or building. We asked the elderly couple next door if we were in the right place, they said we were and even told us some stories about other people showing up to take pictures and such. The man we talked to said he has lived next door for 37 years and has never experienced anything out of the ordinary. We did take some pictures from the outside but didn’t want to trespass into the house. Some of our pictures seem to have strange things or faces in the windows. The place has ivy growing over alot of it and alot of the windows are boarded up or just not there, the front door is also just a piece of plywood.
