Real Haunted House

Old Zane Mansion

Martins Ferry, Ohio

This mansion is located on the site of an old cemetery. Constantly, the town and cemetery were being flooded, thus they were both moved to another location. When the coffins were moved, it is said that Hannah Zanes was empty. The house, which used to be an occult and a bordello, is now said to be haunted by Hannah.. There have been reports of her walking up and down the halls and dancing in the living room. There have also been reports of a small child staring out of the window on the stairwell. Others have alleged being able to feel on womans hand rubbing on their shoulder only to turn around and find no one there.

I used to live in Martins Ferry years ago, but never heard about this house. Betty Zane is my 5th greatgrand mother. Mary Staley is also a cousin of mine. I would really appreciate it if anyone would send me pics of this house please. thank you very much, Carol

Well, my husband and I are living in France, but I am from Ferry. We went to visit for a few weeks and ended up in the haunted house with my cousin and his wife.
We videotaped the whole experience. I did not feel any entities there…but something very strange did happen. When we were all about to go upstairs to follow my cousin who was already up the stairs, we noticed (all four of us) that we were covered with fleas! I mean COVERED! Did this happen to anyone else?? It was strange because how do the fleas live if there are no hosts in the house? We left in a hurry and discovered ourselves bit up everywhere. We found it hilarious, but then again it was strange to have so many fleas all over us so quickly.
I am not about to return because of the fleas – we thought maybe it was normal because there was one dead cat in the basement or maybe the ghosts didn’t want us there or to go upstairs. What do you guys think? Email me at nissadance@yahoo.com

I am a local historian and there was never a cemetery at the site of the house mentioned and this place is not any where near a flood level.

Dear Travos,
my bf lived there and when he worked at Strambolis one of the workers there said he had a book that showed the house he lived in (the mansion) back in the early days. the book showed martins ferry when it was on the other side of rt 7 down by the river and the graveyard was on the hill in one photo, and then said how they moved the town on the hill after many years of flooding and having to rebuild. when they started to move the town the graveyard was moved across town, this is documented in other books as well. the next photo showed the mansion and one other home that would be on what is today south 3rd street. the mansion was built on the same site that it previously showed the graveyard being at.
Trust me when I say that there is “a book” out there that shows the original layout of the area. my bf lived in the mansion and when he was going through all of the haunt’s, just as the rest of the tenants who lived there then were.. his friend had a book about the history of Martins Ferry “Before and after” I Believe.. and it described the location.I am from New Jersey and I knew Nothing about the mansion or its History, I Only knew of what my bf told me about it (The haunting) and the first time I went there is an experience that I will never forget, I walked into that run down house with the idea that my BF was Full of **** but after awhile of being in there I can say & and admit that he wasn’t full of **** because I experienced a lot of evil there but yet I also felt the souls of the children in there as well and I felt them, I dreamt about them as well.
if you have any questions or comments then please feel free to send them me or comment on here, we have nothing to hide, we just want to show the dark truth & History of The Old Zane Mansion.

Hi Lynn,
I am the 4th great-grand daughter of Betty Zane. My relatives, the Prince, Condell, Coss and Staleys have given me alot of information about the Zane Family. When I saw this site about the Mansion I was so excited to have more info to add to my family tree, thank you for posting and all others about this house.
I used to live in Martins Ferry but now I live in Wheeling. Any photos and information I will gladly appreciate.

i use to live in the old betty zane mansion.they turned the building into apartments,i use to live in the upstairs as soon as you reached the top steps was my door and my dad lived behind me in the same building just different apartment.i have visioned a woman dancing in my living room and sometimes with a man.you can feel energy in there.you know your not alone.i have had experiences throughout the house not just in my apartment.i had friends who lived across the hall and down stairs.they have all told me about experiences they had.never did i know that was the betty zane mansion til after i moved out.i honestly didnt know that was the place til 2003.i moved from there in 97….but i knew that the place had a history and we was never the only ones there.i have a gifted side and can sense things that are not normal.but never knew the whole time i lived there, but i did sense the ballroom and everything.it was like i was flashed back in time was how i felt.one other episode that happened to me was,i was doin laundry and was passing by my bedroom carrying a basket of clothes.something caught my eye in my room where my vanity and dresser mirrors were.i saw the image of a young woman with long dark hair, sitting at my vanity brushing her hair.i thought one of my friends came in and was waiting for me,when i stopped and looked in to call her,she was gone.noone was there.but there was a mist of some sort moving around thru the room til it hit the sunlight in front of the window.but you can smell a lingering perfume in there from time to time.

I’ve heard some stories about this mansion in Ohio. Some of my friends are planning to visit the location and I’m excited to come with them.

Anybody asking about some haunted mansion, get updated by ken Hudnall’s blog – http://kenhudnallshow.com/blog/

Been reading the haunted houses he features regularly. I am looking forward the Old Zane mansion could be featured as well.

Omg.What are you guys talking about? The Old Zane mansion was torn down in the late 90′s and is now the hospital parking lot.The 210 South 3rd st address was a bunch of apartments at one time and has nothing to do with the Zanes.

Sorry guys but the Zane mansion was where the old Elm School used to be. Go to the Sedgwick House and ask someone who actually knows. Don’t believe every little story you hear on the web.

Chuck says:

It’s ridiculous to believe that the place you’re speaking of flooded. The Zanes were all buried in Wheeling but later moved to Walnut Grove. Walnut Grove and Riverview are and were the only cemeteries in Martins Ferry.

Chuck says:

Correction. Only cemeteries in that area of Martins Ferry.
