This house, which I have been inside on several occasions between 19889 and 1990, has been torn down. The legend at that time said that the man whole lived there, Dewey Babcock, murdered his entire family sometime in the sixties or seventies and subsequently committed suicide. There is a cemetery just north of the house, increasing the ominous mood that rode shotgun with every visit to the old house. Across the road was a very big, well kept home that was rumored to belong to Judge Kickbush, who was usually blamed for calling the police whenever the old home shone lights out of the windows as a result of people like me, who was fascinated by the place. While I was never caught inside the house, I came very close on one occasion. My friend, his girlfriend, my girlfriend and myself actually had to hide under the house, which was half basement and half crawlspace. We crawled all the way back to the west wall and ducked down and stayed put for over an hour. We were actually upstairs, which contained only two bedrooms-one on either side of the stairway, when we saw the police lights. We ran down to the basement and crawled all the way back. We could here two officers walking in the house and talking to each other. One of them actually came down to the basement, shined his light around very quickly, and nearly sprinted back up to his partner as if he wanted nothing to do with being down there alone. That was the extent our excitement in the Dewey Babcock house. I did, however, find a pill bottle in the basement with the name Estella Babcock on it dated from the early eighties, which made me begin to question the validity of the legend. After very little effort, I discovered that Dewey had died in 1986 and his wife was still alive and living in a nursing home. They were married for over half a century, until death did them part, and had no children. Estella died in the nursing home in 1993.

i went and checked this one out. i saw nothing odd at all. i did find something unique though, if he did decapitate his family with an axe he must have at some point sharpend it? i found the sharpening stone and kept it. makes for a good conversation piece.

I read all comments up to this point from local kids to ghost hunters to police officers and even the owner of the house behind this one(which no longer stands) whose had her property broken into to the point That i guess she finally moved! Please read all comments especially the one thats from "I live there" before you decide to check this place out. You might get shot or arrested so read and ghost hunt safley! Peace out!

I really wish some of these "Ghost Hunting" websites would do some research on some of the places they post as being haunted. This has been an urban legend for as long as I can remember. Friends and I have driven by several times when we were younger at least 15 years ago. If you go to the Porter County Historical(GenWeb) website and look at the old maps of the property in Liberty township, you can easily locate this property as being owned by a family called Alabach for many, many years. From what I can tell, they have owned that property since at least 1969. The husband however has passed. The wife on the other hand, still owns a smaller property just north of the 68 acres for sale, I imagine she still resides there being that the taxes on both properties are up to date. Yes you can look that up too, in the Porter County Taxes website. From what I have read about her, she has been a Citizen's Activist for many years, helping to shut down several landfills in the area, wheeler, 49, and in Hebron. Amongst many other things. She was obviously a well respected woman and an asset to our local community. Everyone needs to leave this poor woman and her property alone!! Respect her wishes and don't trespass on her land!!

me and my bf have been there twice but never actually got out to explore the first time it was dark so we didnt see anything the second it was daytime and we finally saw the house its a little ways into the woods but it looks like a nice big house other than the fact that its boarded up. i for one dont believe the story about him decapitating his family and putting their heads on display i need proof of that one like the year and the police report i know its posted no trespassing everywhere around there but i may soon go explore i really want to.

The property is for sale, you may not go back there without a realtor. The neighbors will call the cops on you.
