Quaker Cemetery
Called Spider Gates because it has eight gates, this cemetery is said to be very dangerous. Starting at the first gate it is said that one will hear whispers and notice leaves moving around when the wind is calm. As one gets closer to the eighth gate, it is said they will feel the sensation of someone brushing against them. Others have reported seeing people walking aimlessly around graves. As one gets closer to the eight gate, the sensations and images become so strong that most people faint. No one has ever made it to the eight gate. It is said that some have suffered massive heart attacks and died because they were over come with fear.
I’ve lived in worcester, Mass. my whole 36 years and growing up have many times have been to spider gates have spent many, many nights and early mornings untill the sun rises and never heard, saw or even felt a thing.and from all the stories i’ve heard I was very scared in there but got over the fear after being in there so many times. So as you can guess this is a bunch of crock. And as far as someone having died before they reach the eighth gate. send me some proof.

ya, i agree, i live about half an hour away from worcester and have been to spider gates, it’s not that easy to get into though because cops are constantly watching the area, but theres nothing there other than land and graves

I have lived in leicester where spider gates is actually located. it is connected to Earle street which is the street named after my family. My great, great grandfather is buried in that cementary. there are not 8 gates there is only one. there are many people buried there and it is not haunted. it is alos private property and should NOT be entered.

i have been in there (off earl st) and trust me. that place is haunted it was not meant to be a tourast attraction. i would strongly advise not to go, and leave well enough alone

I say all you people should let others believe in what they want. It does not matter if you think it’s haunted or not.

I have to say that although I have never experienced
any strange phenomenon at Spider Gates, there is a certain
energy present no matter what time of the day it is you visit.
Perhaps its due to the countless stories that accompany
the site…….., but Id like to think that theres always more
than meets the eye when it comes to the unknown. Great
place to go and spook yourselves for fun!!

Spiders Gate is a very mysterious place where many people have been buried. The haunting rises from one of the first burials that took place there. It was a person inhis mid thirties, he was accused of murdering and was buried alive. Years later, it was discovered he was innocent. This is all I know that actually happened. Im a certified ghost addict, and all I can say about this is that there is definetely something about this place, NO you will not see people moving around nor will someone brush up against you, you wuill feel a sense that your not the only one there. If you believe and concemtrate hard enough, you can have a spiritual connection with the dead, especially in places like cemetaries.
If you go there, look for the tombstone of Harold B. Scotten, it is located past the first gate (and there is only one gate) immedialtely take a right, you will see it, sit down and talk to him……concentrate….and if your sincere you will feel a connection.
read about it…….look up historic crimes, buried alive crimes, etc…….
Good Luck, Im from New Jersey, but honestly for the best haunting, theres nothing like Massachusetts, or Texas.
Comment by Claudia Hill | 10.15.2005 | 1:51 pm
I looked up the name and says that it is believed he was beaten and buried while still breathing. They accused him of murdering a preacher who practiced religion freely and approached others to believe and pray.
Did this Harold dude believe in religion or god for that matter?
Oh but I guess he was set up, so who was the real murderer?

my first visit to spider gates, i was scared before we even got there. I went with my boyfriend and three of his friends, one whom was another female that i couldn’t stand, but that’s not the point. When we arrived we parked out on the back road near it and had to walk through the woods. Armed with flash lights we slowwly ventured to the cemetery that was deep in the woods. When we reached the gate, i was highly disappointed, there are not eight gates, only one that looks like a spider web design in the cast iron. we went in through the gates and still nothing, no floating orbs, no spooky sounds, nothing at all. we walked around for a few minutes until we saw through the trees a police car with lgiths shining on our vehicle. We ran back to the car hoping to not get in trouble by the police. As we did my uncle drove by with a group of friends that had come down to try to scare the poop out of us but was to late.

I grew up about 1 mile from spider gates. We use to ride our bikes there in the early 80’s, and from what I remember at that time there were no gates, legend had it that they were in the smithsonian museum. I see from recient photos there are now gates present. And yes, there was a rope about 2 feet long hanging from the tree through the entrance on the left. Some of the stories i have read on the different websites differ from what I remember as a kid though. Never heard about 8 gates, what I remember was if you passed over the far wall you’d never come back, and the rope was from a man and he was found with no clothing but his personal items were on the ground below him. Who knows? The place is kinda creepy and as a kid I would never go there at night. But I do remember one wierd thing that did happen, and 3 pthers can back me up. Like a said we used to ride our bikes there and we were using one of the headstones as a jump (dumb kids) the next day we returned and the headstone was perfectly straight up and down ( I swear on this). Having not been there in 20 or so years and seeing the websites is kinda cool. Hope they do a movie about this place!!!!!!

spider gates is not haunted at all. it is where we lay our relatives to rest. would you like it if from 100 years from now if where your parents are burried that it will no longer be respected because of curious teenagers creating some ghost stories just to have aome laughs. we here at FRIENDS find it very dissrespectful that our cemetery is treated the way that it is our relatives deserve respect and they will get the respect that they deserve. as of JUNE 1 2006 FRIENDS cemetary will be closed off from all tresspassers the will be security stationd at the Earle st enterance anyoned found tresspassing will be prosecuted and fined $600 for disturbing the peace. To the respectful tourists we apologize for the inconvenience but until further notice FRIENDS (spider gates) will be closed to everyone!!

Well i personaly have never been to spider gates but a x-friend of mine was there and spent the night there and was visited by a female ghost aperation. But i would like to go there why hasn tany ghost hunters ever been there to prove once and for all if it is realy haunted or not.I do not want to get arrested if i go there but i would love to go and see for myself what it is like.I also had a friend tell me their is evil demonic spirits there and a group did go in to check it out and left very fast and not all in the group came out a few did not come out of there at all weither or not it is true.I still think they should send in anyone that does ghost hunting or can people who detect paranomal activity there to spider gates to prove once and for all the truth to spider gates. And i live in worcester not to far from there and some day i will go there but for now we should try to get someone with the ability to find the real truth about spider gates.

hey i’m 16 and over the summer i went with my bestfriend to go and check it out. she has been there a couple times and she did her science fair project on it. she took pictures and all of them next to her, there were ghosts. that same day her mom had stitches in her chest because she had breast cancer and they popped open and she had to get rushed to the hospital. but like i said i went there and we sat down in the middle.. i guess it’s the worst place or something and yeah we had a picnic.. and it immedatly started down pouring with thunder and lightening and the gates slammed shut. the forcast for that day was fine, we checked. it was very scary. serisouly if you have like no reason to go unles you somehow have family there i suggest you don’t go. it is private property and it can be dangerous.

I think hauntings are so wierd. I mean some people can be so superstitious and just plain stupid about strange things such as ghosts that you can never be sure about whether these things are true or not. As for regarding this particular story give me proof who has died before reaching the gate? This story isn’t so creepy at all!!!
Comment by Fred | 03.7.2006 | 4:38 pm
I have been to spider gates many times myself …. first off there is only one gate. i have gone during the day, during the night, and have never seen anything. Cops do frequent that area often, and no its not cause they are trying to cover something up, it has to do with the fact that it is a very small and private cemetary. And for those of you not from around this area, you cant find the cemetery just driving, you have to know where to park, and walk through the woods to get there … not worth it at all if you are looking for a scare, but it is a nice quite cemetery with a cool gate. Thats about it.

i live about 2 miles away from Spider Gates. it really isnt haunted at all. besides, there is only one gate. and people are still being buried there and graves are still maintained. its not just some abandoned cemetery. the dead isnt something that should be messed with. it is not a haunted cemetery. its just trees, grass, and gravestones. thats it.
Comment by donna | 03.30.2006 | 3:32 am
I have never been to Spider Gates. But I plan on going with a friend once the weather is right. I’ve heard many stories about the cemetery and I’m curious as to see if it’s true or not. I do believe in spirits and I’ve experienced a few things. There’s a lot of non believers out there and thats fine. You can believe whatever you like. But please leave your spiteful comments to yourself. Stop acting like little children. There is no need for that.
But as I was saying. In my culture, to be able to experience something supernatural you do not go with a gazillion friends. If you do, you won’t see anything at all. Go with just one other person. I’m pretty sure then you’ll see something or feel something.
And about the 8 gates..there is only one. It’s believed that spider gates is the 8th gate to Hell. Not that there are 8 gates….
Comment by Sanny | 04.5.2006 | 1:19 pm
I have been to Spider Gates twice at night and many times in the day. I have never seen our felt a thing while I was inside. As for gates, only one. No others! One gate, that’s it! I remember the stories and in my time they said 11 gates. As to the person that was told that bums and hobo’s where up their. That’s just not true. Bums would not travel to an area that is so far from the city. No shelter, nor liquor and Hobo’s like to be near trains. No trains or food near by. “5 miles into the woods.” Sorry to burst your tale, but that is not possible. There are homes and roads that cut across in shorter spans than 5 miles in any direction from spider gates. It’s more like .5 miles in a north to south direction which abuts the Worcester Airport. Any one seen stopping near the fence at the airport will be accompanied shortly by police dispatched to get you moving. On the other side are homes. Not many, about 3 very well spaced homes. The area is creepy, this is true. The tales are just what they are. The area was a good to visit, but like must things people did not respect it and the city closed it off. Like the idiot that used a stone as a jump for his bike. I went up their with to other friends. We walked around and where respectful of the stones. One night while we where sitting on the back stone wall a bunch of cars came up. Dump scared punks. At least twenty kids with baseball bat’s came out. That’s what screwed things up. They where all drinking and loud. The only way to understand something is to experience it in a manner that you can truly experience. I have never encountered anything. Day or night.
If you can go see for yourself. You cannot park any where near it now. So, it would be a long walk on roads that are not lite. Passing homes that look creepy. Untill you get to the dirt road that travels about 1/4 mile to 1/2 mile into the woods where Spider Gates is located. Just dont go up thier thinking that its all true. Let your expreince be the truth.

I’ve heard of this graveyard, but the website I heard it from agrees with most of you in saying that the horrors of it are mostly myths. I’ve also heard some other creepy stuff about this graveyard, though.
Allegedly there’s a small crevice in which a girl was raped and killed.
There’s a tree with rope hanging from it that’s left there that’s said to be from when a teenage boy was found hanged.
It’s said that there’s a section of the graveyard that’s somewhat separated from the rest. However, you can only find it once.
I haven’t been there myself, but the legend behind it does seem very intriguing. I kind of hope it is true, although I doubt such.

You want a hunted cemetary? There’s one a block and a half away from my house. I’ll be posting it soon. There may also be a web page for it, if my friend Nick agrees to do it. Check the Pennsylvania section soon, and it should be up as CATHEDRAL CEMETARY. I’m waiting for the groundskeeper, who’s a family friend, to give me a night that I can go in and observe the last section of it that I didn’t get too.

This place is truly haunted hands down.I went there and heard a young woman’s ghost horribly i mean horribly screaming HELP around midnight. also brought a Ouija and talked in center of circle in graveyard.Heard footsteps and alota twigs breaking in the windy woods. Also we asked a question just then a 4ft branch fell from a tall tree right near us.It’s the gods honest truth it’s haunted!

Hey for any of you jackasses that actually know what research is there are 2 Spider Gates. 1 in Worcester and 1 in Leicester. I tried to go to the one in Worcester because I live in Natick which isn’t all that far but I was with a ton of people and one guy was one his bike and didn’t want to leave it by the street. And yes cops do patrol that area often. The rumor that you may die by the time you try to go through the 8th gate is a load of ****. Maybe one day I will actually get to go in there. For those looking for direction the only thing I can tell you is that it is on the back side behind the old Worcester Airport.

When I was about 18, now close to 15 yrs. ago, myself and 3 other friends went there on a whim since we were all from Worcester. We passed through the first gate and noticed the truth to the rumor of the first 2 gravestones just inside the gate entrance were facing in opposite directions, away from each other. We saw the stone wall not far ahead since there were only about 15 gravestones. We heard you just continue crossing many stonewalls. We ended up wandering, all feeling spooked and crossed another stone wall, then a third. We heard the rumor was about crossing over 7 stone walls. After the fourth, we all got tired and stopped to rest. 2 of us saw shadows above in the trees and this was now at dusk. We all got a rush of extreme fright and panic and hard to breathe at the same time and raced back, even tripping all the way. We all agreed that some type of force chased us out. I will never forget.

For all of you people that go to Spider Gates:
The Truth:
As of right now, there is only one gate. Back in the day, there was more than one. You can tell by where the gate used to be in the back, directly opposite from the gates in the front. I have been to Spider Gates, it is NOT hard to get to, and there’s a cemetery down the street from it, so the rumors about the 2nd cemetery, do the math.
Rumors:
For personal experiences and the phenomenal, I have heard something at the gate. I cannot explain what it was, but it sounded like a voice carried by wind when there was no wind. It’s rumored that there were eight gates, but all but the main gate were taken to some museum. If you’re curious, do some research on something before reading someone else’s b.s. It’ll make people more intelligent.

I spent the first 18 years of my life living in that podunk town Leicester (I was a wolverine). All I can tell ya is Spider Gates should charge admission. Theres enough yahoo’s who come to get spooked they could easily rival 6 flags. Anyway, having grown up in Leicester (off rt 56) and having been to this “gate to hell” dragging a keg behind me in my younger days….I can only tell you its a farse. Maybe the people who see ghosts and hear voices are either drunk, or forgot to take their anti-psychotic meds. I’ve taunted enough spirits there to force a life long haunting…and guess what? NOTHING. For us locals…its funny and a place to drink when youre a kid. For those ghost hunters who occasionally leave the comforts of their parents basement to catch a photo of Slimer (ghost buster reference). Bring a 12 pack and smoke a couple J’s, you might hear voices…but they’re all in your head.

FROM AN EXPERIENCED GHOST HUNTER,GHOSTS CHOOSE WHO THEY WANT TO SHOW WHAT THEY ARE CAPABLE OF DOING.
WE WERE IMPRESSED BY THE STORIES, BUT YOU PEOPLE REALLY NEED TO LEARN SOME CORRECT SPELLING THEN MAYBE YOUR HAUNTING HUNT WIL BE A MORE INTERESTING EXPERIENCE. I BELIEVE IF YOU BELIEVE IN THE UNKNOWN, TRULEY BELEIVE, THEN YOU WILL SEE.

WOW!
I never thought ghosts could do so much, like actually killing people? That’s amazing.
Although, it could be a hoax. Some people might of been awear of the hauntings and had bad heart conditions, freeking themselves out and dieing. I’d love to know more about this place.

First of all Spider Gates does not have 8 gates, the cemetary (which is still in use for the Quakers) got that name because the front (and only) gate has lines on it that resemble the legs of a spider. I have been there quite a few times because like many of you I got caught up in the hype and wanted to see what it was all about. I recommend that if anyone were to visit it, do so as you would visit any cemetary, to pay respects to the departed and to also respect the property (which is private)
Comment by Angelina | 10.2.2006 | 4:06 pm
The reason why this cemetary is so heavily gaurded by the local police is because it’s right next to an airport and because it’s PRIVATE PROPERTY. From what I hear families still use it to bury their dead and many curious fieldtrippers and pranksters (especially this time of year) have repeatedly shown very little respect while visiting this cemetary. So little respect in fact, that many of the monuments have been destroyed and at one point the famous “spider gate” was removed because of vandalism.
When caught up in the spirit of a good fright (bad punn) people seem to forget that each and every person burried there is someones FAMILY MEMBER - you would be outraged by someone urinating and fornicating on your grandmother’s grave or tagging your brother’s headstone with profanity before toppling it over, wouldn’t you? Unfortunately this kind of desacration occurs at this cemetary with regularity.
There was an article in one of local papers a few years back in which the owners stated that they would not mind visitors if respect was shown to the grounds and those burried there. If you wish to visit I would recommend doing so durring daylight hours and leaving before dark. Will the “spooks” get you if you stay after nightfall? Probably not, but the the police most likely will.

I’m not sure about people passing out and dieing at SpiderGates, but I certantly do belive in ghosts. Occasionly, i have dreams of my late grandfather, not scary ones, but comforting messages, as in “Don’t be upset” or “God watches over you.” Also, my friend from school took a picture of herself on her cellphone, and, when she looked at the picture, was terrified that she saw a light sillohete of a young girl standing behind her.

Sooo, I just got back from Spider Gates. Still only one gate, still nothing to be impressed about, and if you stop to ask for directions to it, people get pissed. I’d steer clear of it, if only to respect the dead. I went there once as a kid, as a curious ghosthunter, and there was nothing in there that was any spookier than my closet opening on it’s own (slanted floor) at night. Seriously folks, there’s creepier stuff out there. I wouldn’t risk the arrest though, because the locals can and will press charges.

This cemetery sounds interesting. Unfortunately, some people have to give all of us a bad name (high schoolers thrill-seeking and such). I would love to visit this cemetary (don’t worry Pleasant Friends poster- I would still sneak in but you would never know I was there), but there is plenty around where I live. There are some of us who want to do nothing more than observe and research. I would say most of us paranormal researchers are highly respectful of the property, escpecially those of us who are history buffs.

It has been so many years that i have been at spider gates. I surpose that it the stories that make the place haunted, but lets think for a minuit, its a semetry, there all dead, of course the place and 5000
other sementry have a haunted thery about them, but it is the excitiment that lives on and our fears that seem to come to be relastic. if you want to believe
go with it and if not that is fine too, but being scared lets face it its pretty cool. expecialy around holloween. by the way there is only one black iron gate with a spider on it . not sure were the other 7 gates came from but there not there.
Comment by Nola Rae | 10.26.2006 | 1:26 pm
Back in the early 80’s Before the road was blocked you could drive by there. One day on a Sunday afternoon A friend and myself decided to drive by the place so he could see it for the first time.As the car rounded the corner directly in front of the main gate BAM the car just went dead.It was like the battery was gone. For 5 min we sat there wondering what was happining then just as if nothing was wrong I turned the key and the car started right up.Needless to say we got the hell out of there with a real wierd feeling.Never did that car stall before in all the years that I drove it or did it ever stall after that.Just that one time at the place directly in front of that place they call Spider Gates.Take it for what its worth but this is a true story.

I have been there, and alot of weird things happned. I have read about the quarters on top of the head stones, which is done as a sign of respect to the dead. Walked by a set of headstones where no quarters were there, and then on the way back, they had quarters on them. This could all be chalked up as a mishap up untill this point as there are alot of headstones, maybe I was looking at the wrong one. On the walk back to the car however, we could not help but feel as we were being watched. And you could almost see figures in the woods. Upon arrivial at the car, which was locked by remote when we left the car, had been unlocked, and the door had been opened. Nothing had been taken from the car, to my surprise as my wallet was right on the front passenger seat, untouched. However left on the drivers seat was….you guessed it. A quarter. Weird. I drove as fast out of this place as I possibly could without being pulled over by the cops, who do patrol there strongly. Maybe this was something of the unexplained, or maybe it was the owners and surronding residents who do not want us on their property. But how would they have gotten into the car, with no damage to the locking mechanism? AND the alarm did not sound?

Hey I’ve been to spider gates before, its pretty creepy. I think things may be a little odd, but you have to use your imagination to make out figures and sounds. Its not really scary, but some weird things did happen to me and my friends.

I lived in Worcester, Mass in the 70’s; I went to South High School from 69 to 73.
Spider Gates was a favorite drinking and partying spot back then. I never remember anything weird happening in the cemetery but I do remember the larger gates you spoke of in your web article.
Really don’t remember the exact shape of the gates but they did look more like a spider web and as I said were much larger than the ones that are in your pictures.
I haven’t been back since the 70’s. I’m glad because it is a shame to loose a peace of history like this.
Just wish they had redone the original gates, or at least copied them. As a welder and fabricator I would love to build the original gates for them if they could find an old picture of them so that I could build them more like the originals.

About 5 or 6 years ago a group of us tryed to find it with no luck. 6 months later I was telling my bestfriend about it when he suggested we go. We decided to pick up my friend Amy first. So the three of us took off to find this Quaker grave yard. When we got there I only saw one gate not 8 and there was nothing unusual about it. Well dusk was moving in and we decided to walk around anyways. I decided to check the woods around the grave yard out. I was maybe 20 feet into the woods when I heard Amy screaming and freaking out. Both friends were calling my name. So I turned around and saw what looked like me walking through the woods at the other side of grave yard. The other me wasn’t wearing what I had been wearing she looked like me in everyway except the closthes and her hair was down. I also saw 6 not 8 nor 1 gate. three on each side. My friends where really freaking out at this point and I yelled for them but they didn’t seem to hear me, so I ran out of the woods back to them, startling them. They had been looking at me but couldn’t see me untill my foot hit the ground out of those woods. We ran to the car and took off back home. Amy cryed the whole way saying that there was something evil in those woods. We also felt something following us home. We never talked about it again…….. untill last night. I called my best friend and asked him if he remembered it. There hasn’t been a day I felt normal since, and at first he said no, but after a few minutes he confessed that he has never forgotten about it and he still has nightmares.
The only reason I brought this up to him is because another friends from Penn. had a similar experience, and after telling me about it stopped in mid sentance and said, “but you’d know about this too!”. I had never told him about it, and he has never met my other friends…… Stay away from Spiter gates, they can change you. I don’t care what anyone thinks because I was there I know it happened and I haven’t been the same since!
Comment by S.D.P. | 11.9.2006 | 4:47 pm
Sounds like a great ghost story. I have been to the Gates. There is one gate. I don’t know how you could’ve seen six, but maybe there is a para-normal reason for why you saw six that I am not aware of. The place is scary the first few times you visit it, but after that it is kind of nice. Coins are on the graves to pay the toll to the after-life. On a nice day I recommend exploring through the woods towards hot dog annies and grabbing a few dogs. Also if you are female, make sure you are accompanied by a reliable “bodyguard” because it is a secluded area that can attract weirdos, and is next to the Nazereth home for boys.
Comment by John | 11.20.2006 | 5:16 am
first of all there are not “gates” ther is one gate and many many people have seen it (its not impossible to get to like some people will tell you) second, it is a privately owned cemetary and is still used by the family that owns it, so you should show some respect and not go unless you have written consent from the family. you should be able to find the visitation agreements on this site http://www.neym.org/
have fun and be safe..

I think that people who do not believe in this legend about the cemetery should not ruin it for everyone who does, i dont think its right at all, because there are some people who really do believe it including me. well people who really understand and believe in it im right along with you
Comment by Amanda | 01.8.2007 | 12:30 pm
First of all, you all need to learn to either spell or type, because I found spelling errors in every comment. Secondly, people need to stop putting negative things on here, if you don’t believe in anything, don’t ruin it for everyone else. People have the right to an imagination, beliefs, fears, etc.
I enjoy reading about hauntings, and trying to find out if they are true or not. But if I come across a place where something has been said to happen, and nothing happens to me, I wouldn’t want to ruin the experience for someone else. Maybe things can only happen to certain people, or maybe not. I think everyone should go out and look for the hauntings, whether its risky, or fake, or whatever else you’d want to label it as. Everyone should see these things for themselves and judge the stories as they please.
Thank you.

I looked it up in the past.. but before I looked it up see I was on pb from spidergate cuz I was one of the ones that was looking for it and no I didn’t get arrested but yes I did get pulled over and they give you are 2 year thing if your name is cought you get locked up for the night and 50 dollar fine.. I want to go in cuz I love pictures and I would love to go in and take some.. I dont’ think you will be able to see them but I belive if you really really listen they will talk to you. I mean there dead they must get lonely… I mean if iwhere dead I’d be haunting the whole place just for people like you and me.. but as I was leaveing I did see where there was the entrance.. now if I am not mistaken it’s by the air port? and there are so many cops becuase again it’s a PRIVATE cemetery… and as for any cemetery it is closed to the public at dusk.. I read if you want to visit go during the day! but apearenly up ther it said it’s closed period… well that’s would be not right but understandable… I would like permishion to take personal pictures.. is it possiable… ? I have many pictures of many cemetiers i mean no disrespect I just want pictures… if I hear or see something Iwill most likely p myself but it will be an exsperiance worth while…

I was there only a few days ago. I don’t know what people are talking about but we couldn’t find an Earle St. We got there from a street in between Rt. 56 and Mullbury St. right behind the airport. It wasn’t scary at all. It felt more peaceful. Some of the stones are so old that the dates are off of them. There are also some that have a year of death but no birth year. I thought the cemetery was very interesting and anyone who goes there should have a respect for those buried there.

Me and my friends went to spider gates the halloween night of 05′ after reading about it online. Alot of people have trouble finding it but we found it easily coming all the way from Braintree with Mapquest directions. The creepiest part was the ride through Leicester itself, everythings woods and no lights and a train came outta nowhere in the woods so that was different and the buildings on the road the place is on were scarier than the actual cemetary. As for spider gates theres only one gate from what i seen but it was night and supposedly some of my friends saw a church lookin house thing off to the side but I didn’t. Noone saw or heard anything and the only weird experience I had was that I surprisingly had no fear what so ever even though it was pitch black in the middle of nowhere on Halloween night. My friend wanted to take one of the old coins on one of the gravestones but we told him not to cuz i didn’t wanna be haunted my whole life. If you go be prepared for cops to harass you like you slapped their mothers. They stopped us coming back but they didn’t know we went yet, they found some weed in my friends car then lined us up and searched all of us while running our ID’s. They let us go but not before biting our faces off…apparently your supposed to be able to read a tiny private property sign on a tree 30 yards deep in the woods at night with zero visibility. So go if you want but theres no promise you’ll see anything or have a heart attack unfortunatly but for your legal sake maybe you should bring your lawyer.

Hey TP, read my post its two above yours, I’ve been there fairly recently and its not all its hyped up to be. First off the place is tiny I’m used to cemetaries with hundreds or thousands of gravestones but this place looked like it had about 20. Theres rumors of a hanging tree which I didn’t see and supposedly a little cave where a dead girl was found stuffed in but I seen no rocks or anything that resembled a cave. While the cops were harassing us they said “I dunno what you read online but theres no gateway to hell”…..we were like thanks buddy but we didn’t come here to burn in hell for all of eternity. You have to cross a little bridge going over a river which some people try to say is the “River Styx” from the bible but I found the real name (I forget what it is)and we didn’t die after crossing like some say, so thats fun. Its still a creepy place and I recommend it to anyone who wants to investigate a little cemetary in the middle of nowhere then get searched and possibly arrested—(added rush bonus)

I think it is fascinating and dont know what to believe, but one thing I do believe is that there is no point in loging-on to one of these sites if you sre just going to critise other peoples beliefs, such as some guy/gal called Ariel.

I have been to spider gates and I think it has a very beautyful atmosphere when visited dury a nice spring day but, I have never felt any presance at all. I have been throughout the entire area.Through the woods and the plot, and without a doubt there are no more than the usual spiritual phenomenon. Quite a beautiful place but remember, it is a place of rest,so have some repect if you are to ever go there.
p.s. a very nice view of the dam and lake.

I’ve been there many times and lived in Leicester MA as a kid. 1 time I went with a bunch of friends and we saw 2 candles lit in the center of the cemetary, one was back and the other white. We figured some freak satanists were doing something retarded satanists do because their dad bever hugged them.
Another time, my father who is 6′6 280 lbs, threw a beer bottle at the tree in front as hard as he can, it didnt break, threw at at another tree, broke easily, then tried another bottle on the tree in front, and still would not break… that was the weirdest thing thats happend to us there… which isnt much.
I’ve laid on the actual places people are burried, chilled and smoked butts, and no “paranormal activity”
Spider gates is the place that gets all the attention… people living in spencer, leicester should go to BORKUM HILL if you really want to see wierd things… its off rt. 31. Ive had a car chase us then dissapear, and then almost run over a decapated head of a cow… Its a dirt road.. about 10 miles away from spider gates in Spencer… that place has freaked me out more than spider gates. Its rumored that a lunatic in the early 1900’s stalked and killed few people that walked that road…
Have fun scaring yourself!

True, There have been several cases of bodies found at spider gates which adds to the attention.
A girl commited suiceide there, very sad actually. That happend in 1994.
A body was found there by a man and his dog, the newspaper article did not go into any specifics and really only noted that it happend ealry morning in 1998. My take on it is that there is some sort of uncomfortable feeling you get, like there is something watching.. but it could be nothing… my inclination is that your state of mind as you walk in predicts the visit and its experience while you in there… I beleive if your person decides the level of paranormal experiences, if your religous, you will not experience what others have, of your open to let the evil spirits in, then who knows what may happen… My personal experience has been enlightening… I find that Spider gates is a place of unexplained feeling of terrifying and grave unsettlement… dont go if you cant controll your thoughts, or Spider Gates will get the best of you.
PS Its BORKUM ROAD not BORKUM HILL - many stories as well… find out for yourself.

Eluding the police trying to get to this place is scarier than actually being there. There is no place to park on the street. If you park on the street the police will just go down there and arrest you. The only way to get to spider gates is parking at the landfill where you can hide your car and sprinting like .5 mile and hope that no cop cars come down the street. (It’s Leicester these cops have nothing better to do we saw a cop go by 3 times in 2 hours)
Comment by loves2spooge | 08.26.2007 | 2:24 am
well its not technically a house its a cemetary, and if anyone has stayed there overnight is a liar because no one can stay there without police and you must notify them before you go inside so YOU DONT GET ARRESTED!!! if heard stories i believe there is some kind of presence due to the fact a girl was killed there in the tunnel and someone hung themself there a long time ago, bad energy brings bad things.

I went to Spider gates in 2004 with a boyfriend who is now an ex. He used to ride his dirt bike in the woods around the cemetary as a kid and was arrested and his dirt bike was taken away. We went together and there were some people wearing all black walking around. We were more scared of those weird visitors than of the cemetary which was not scary at all. You never know what kind of people may read this website notice that young people are going in the woods unarmed and vulnerable. People have been killed there, you must remember that it is near Worcester a city with gangs and you could end up getting raped or stabbed instead of just a little scare. So please kids, teens, and all alike DON’T GO IN THE WOODS, REAL PEOPLE CAN BE SCARIER THAN GHOSTS! That’s why the police watch it so much hello!?
Comment by Coley | 09.30.2007 | 2:23 pm
Please keep in mind that what is haunted to some might not be to others. I think only some people can see ghosts. Those who believe and those who are a little more sensitive than others.
So if you haven’t seen, felt, smelt, or heard anything maybe you aren’t opened minded enough. But that doesn’t mean that what others say isn’t true.

I lived in worcester my whole life, and as a teen I did my share of trying to scare other teens by bringing them there, and scaring the heck out of them back in the 70’s. It is spooky place only because of all the stories, and peoples imagination. I never seen or herd anything other than other people that were there at the same time. It is a very nice old cemetary with beautiful head stones which have been ruined over the years buy young adults. I’ts a cool place to visit, but at the same time have respect for the dead. happy haunting

I’ve been to the Spider Gates in worcester. I went with my sister and her now ex boyfriend. We didn’t see anything, but I had a nasty feeling like I was being watched…He told us a few things that happened there. Some were: There was a man found hanging off a tree, and the rope was still on the branch, a little girl was killed there, a little boy had been seen and people sometime had found a little boy’s shoe. I think if you believe then you might hear and see things.

Hi,
I will tell you what has been told over the years. My Gram would be 130 and her story was that there were 8 gates at one time. The last original one was iron and had an iron spider at the top. The story we all heard was that a young girl died after her fiance was killed. Evidently she killed herself. They buried her without her engagement ring and at a certain time of year she is supposed to be up crying and looking for it. My son was taken, along with a group from church on that particular night by the priest. He saw nothing. I have been there but only in the day. We were raised in Tatnuck which is about 1 1/2 miles from spider gates. Quakers still have their own church in Worcester. Most were cloistered and thus chose an isolated spot in which to bury their dead.
It is spooky.

I have been to this place 10 or so times and I haven’t found anything worth being afraid of. No bad feelings, no brushing against me, no noise, no movement. Just hours of uneventful stuff. Somewhere around Douglas I did find a very scary cemetery that I would bet my life that it’s haunted.
Comment by Bob Fogwell | 11.14.2007 | 9:15 pm
Just so everyone knows, every graveyard is no trespassing from Dusk til Dawn in Mass, and Spider Gates is 24 Hour No Trespassing. If caught, you will be arrested.
That in mind, from the stories, I pictured a huge spanning graveyard, from pictures online, its a tiny neighborhood cemetery, leave these fine peoples families to rest.

I went to Spider Gates with my friend about a year ago. Nothing really happened when we were in the cemetary, but when we were walking down the dirt path from the road we ran into this weird guy. I mean he was a really freaky looking older guy. He stopped us and asked us what we were doing there and we told him that we were there cause of the places reputation. He then smiled at us and walked away..really creepy. I dont know about ghosts there but there are some real weirdos..dont go alone.

I have also lived like 10 min away from spider gates and have been there many times. first of all the gates that are there now are not the original gates, the new ones were put in around the late 70s (don’t quote me, I don’t know the exact date) the ones that are there now don’t really look like spiders at all funny enough. also for the 8 gates of hell thing…I don’t think there are 8 gates, I have only seen the 2 gates at the entrance and then there is the stone walls that surround it. Spider gates is now private property,so going there is trespassing sadly.

Spidergates…
My bf lives 15 minutes away. First off, it is located in Leicester, not Worcester, but near Worcester Airport. It’s located near a landfill. My bf and I went there one day, it’s just pretty boring. The gate is pretty cool to look at though. We walked all the way up the hill and there were these two guys sitting there in front of the gates and one of them was taking a piss on the ground…lol. Don’t believe the hype folks, it’s just a small cemetary surrounded by a bunch of trees and paths. Nothing more. It’s mostly urban legend.

I have lives almost all my life in Worcester and at one time packed 13 people in a little tiny car to go spend the night there…Spider gates has recently been renovated an its nicely maintained but earlier years it was just a hole in the wall. To chear things up…there is not 8 walls nor is there any sheds or anything else. There is on 2 foot brick wall surrounding the cemetary and then thats it, go over it an ur in a swamp where people ride dirtbikes and quads all year. It does have some real old graves an most of them are related to others. I belive its family plots. Ranging from the early 1700s to the late 1800s an I believe couple are in the early 1900s.
It is still a historical location, a place from the past.
Comment by Mikey | 03.4.2008 | 5:13 am
Spider Gates is not private property but restrictions have been placed on it. visitation times are from dust till dawn an anytime after dark is classified as tresspassing…only reason being: People partying there making a mess of the area with beer cans an broken bottles an even before the renovation the spraypaint on the archway saying ” Anyone with a name starting with S will Die!” (Scared the literal poop out of my brother who’s name is Steven lol), also the dirtbikes an quads do sometimes use the gate on the road to get there bikes out of the woods, So it does get maintained an not destroyed as are the other older cemetarys I have been to that people are dicks an knock over headstones and break real old ones in half just to be a numbnuts.

I grew up in Worcester so I,ve heard all the stories and made many trips up there growing up.Never saw anything super-natural,but saw something strange once. I moved 30 miles west to small town and one day in school history class we got into big spider gates discussion. our teacher told us that at one time the origanal cemetary was plotted into 7 sections. (that would be 8 walls)there were two sections in use once and the remaining 5 were decommisoned to make way for the rte 56 resevoir. It turned into an engineering nightmare when construction turned the second section into a hill and wash away tombstones and stuff like that. so the second section was moved and one was left. and no ones been berried there in centurys.
according to my history teacher.
some of the other students wanted me to take them there wich i did. we brought a cam-corder and found a
tombstone from 1987, wich doesn’t jive with teachers story. so they confronted our teacher who maintaned his story of no one being berried there in some time.
however they had the video tape as proof.
but when the tape was veiwed the headstone part was all scratched out.
we returned to spider gates but couldn’t find the
marker. i swore it was just thru the front gate, maybe ten feet to the right, maybe twenty,i don’t know. but we can’t find it, i’m not saying it ain’t there i just can’t seem to find it. so maybe it aint,
i’m sure it was there that day we all stared at it for awile discussing it.???

I went to the location “spider gates” just today. I did some research before I went, found out that it is called Friends Cemetery, owned privately and maintained by the Quakers. The location was not easy to find, but I did find it. It is located off of Mannville St. in Leicester, Ma. It is unmarked and you can not see it from the road. There is a path that leads down into the woods along side of the airport. There are tall airport lights , and it is down this path that you come to the gates. I found the one gate with symbols of sun-rays (some people think look like spider webs). The area is fairly quiet, however not far from many side streets, and residential properties. The site is very well kept, and very pristine. There is just a humble cemetery with some very old graves, as well as some very new ones, 2003 was the newest that I could find. Inside the cemetery the light from the sky came through the trees and provided a lot of light. There is a stone wall on all sides, and the gate at the front is the only gate remaining. There are some stray concrete posts, I am told they mark where a small Quaker house was once a meeting place. There are paths in three directions, one leads to a main road, another to a secondary road and a third I did not explore but it appeared to be another route back to the main road. There were no abandoned houses, or other objects. I did not find a cave, or any other gates. I found nothing out of the ordinary. I have been to some spooky places, this however, was not one of them. I would say that it was fascinating to visit, I am sure at night it might be creepy because of the location near the airport, landfill and roads. The woods are thick outside of the cemetery, and maybe this is how it got its legend? I think that many of the places like this, especially New England hold so much history that the imagination just takes hold and conjures up visions of terror, fear and the unknown.

I havent been there ever, but as far as the eight gates thing, it’s not eight gates to enter the cemetary. How i head it from a friend is that there are landmarks in the woods that make up the other 7 and the cemetary gate is the first gate.
Comment by mark | 04.13.2008 | 11:44 pm
I heard about Spider Gates from my social studies teacher and it sounded like bull to me so I decided I should go check it out with a group of friends. The cemetery is not that hard to find if you have a GPS in your car. It is a dirt path blocked with gate so vehicles can’t get down the path and it is directly across from the end of the runway. The path is a bit long and if you have heard the rumors about it, you will probably be a bit scared but you shouldn’t be because it’s just a normal cemetery. Now let me clear one thing up, there is only one gate, not eight. We went about a third of a mile back in the woods and there is nothing there. The cemetery itself is very normal and nothing out of the ordinary. There are a few paths that go around the woods near the cemetery. One of them that i took goes down to a stream and then we crossed that and went about 100yrds back and there was just the backside of a house from the mainroad so we headed back. The only thing relatively creepy about Spider Gates is that satanists make strange symbols on the trees. Like I said, Spider Gates is just an ordinary private cemetery where people are buried.
Comment by smart kid | 04.14.2008 | 9:25 pm
Tiffany, you’re comment is bull. There are not 8 gates. Only one.
Comment by smart kid | 04.14.2008 | 9:30 pm
I live in Massachusetts not far from this place. There are several wonderful old cemeteries around the state. I can say the reason for police watching these old cemeteries is because of those that invade and destroy. These places are history of those whom have passed. They need not be destroyed or ruined by those who venture in for the wrong reasons other then to view the interesting grave stones. There is no stone rubbing because it destroys the older tombstones to where they are unreadable. There has been in the past at times where others (those whom don’t appreciate history) have tampered with the graves. Therefore the towns and cities in which you will find these wonderful places want to protect them from idiots who have a lack of respect for the dead and for the history in which they preserve in these places. By all means if stated private property respect that or get permission. Locals do pay attention and do alert authorities. Show some respect and common sense. On another note: Some people are more in tune to connection with the past and or even another spiritual realm. Some do not. I do believe this. Yes, stories do play a part in how one views such places. I know I enjoy a good scary story. I don’t degrade anyone for what they want to believe.

Look! The truth is, Spider Gates Cemetary has been known to house spiders within the cemetary. This is very true and I recommend anyone wishing to witness this for themselves be prepared to encounter many spiders and spiderwebs. I’m still horrified from my experience at spidergates. Oh and for the eight gates…well I only witnessed one gate and I believe the other seven if there ever were…were destroyed and consumed by the many spiders that occupy the cemetary. Proceed with extreme caution!
