Real Haunted House

Quaker Cemetery

Worcester, Massachusetts

Called Spider Gates because it has eight gates, this cemetery is said to be very dangerous. Starting at the first gate it is said that one will hear whispers and notice leaves moving around when the wind is calm. As one gets closer to the eighth gate, it is said they will feel the sensation of someone brushing against them. Others have reported seeing people walking aimlessly around graves. As one gets closer to the eight gate, the sensations and images become so strong that most people faint. No one has ever made it to the eight gate. It is said that some have suffered massive heart attacks and died because they were over come with fear.

I grew up in Worcester so I,ve heard all the stories and made many trips up there growing up.Never saw anything super-natural,but saw something strange once. I moved 30 miles west to small town and one day in school history class we got into big spider gates discussion. our teacher told us that at one time the origanal cemetary was plotted into 7 sections. (that would be 8 walls)there were two sections in use once and the remaining 5 were decommisoned to make way for the rte 56 resevoir. It turned into an engineering nightmare when construction turned the second section into a hill and wash away tombstones and stuff like that. so the second section was moved and one was left. and no ones been berried there in centurys.
according to my history teacher.
some of the other students wanted me to take them there wich i did. we brought a cam-corder and found a
tombstone from 1987, wich doesn’t jive with teachers story. so they confronted our teacher who maintaned his story of no one being berried there in some time.
however they had the video tape as proof.
but when the tape was veiwed the headstone part was all scratched out.
we returned to spider gates but couldn’t find the
marker. i swore it was just thru the front gate, maybe ten feet to the right, maybe twenty,i don’t know. but we can’t find it, i’m not saying it ain’t there i just can’t seem to find it. so maybe it aint,
i’m sure it was there that day we all stared at it for awile discussing it.???

I went to the location “spider gates” just today. I did some research before I went, found out that it is called Friends Cemetery, owned privately and maintained by the Quakers. The location was not easy to find, but I did find it. It is located off of Mannville St. in Leicester, Ma. It is unmarked and you can not see it from the road. There is a path that leads down into the woods along side of the airport. There are tall airport lights , and it is down this path that you come to the gates. I found the one gate with symbols of sun-rays (some people think look like spider webs). The area is fairly quiet, however not far from many side streets, and residential properties. The site is very well kept, and very pristine. There is just a humble cemetery with some very old graves, as well as some very new ones, 2003 was the newest that I could find. Inside the cemetery the light from the sky came through the trees and provided a lot of light. There is a stone wall on all sides, and the gate at the front is the only gate remaining. There are some stray concrete posts, I am told they mark where a small Quaker house was once a meeting place. There are paths in three directions, one leads to a main road, another to a secondary road and a third I did not explore but it appeared to be another route back to the main road. There were no abandoned houses, or other objects. I did not find a cave, or any other gates. I found nothing out of the ordinary. I have been to some spooky places, this however, was not one of them. I would say that it was fascinating to visit, I am sure at night it might be creepy because of the location near the airport, landfill and roads. The woods are thick outside of the cemetery, and maybe this is how it got its legend? I think that many of the places like this, especially New England hold so much history that the imagination just takes hold and conjures up visions of terror, fear and the unknown.

I havent been there ever, but as far as the eight gates thing, it’s not eight gates to enter the cemetary. How i head it from a friend is that there are landmarks in the woods that make up the other 7 and the cemetary gate is the first gate.

I heard about Spider Gates from my social studies teacher and it sounded like bull to me so I decided I should go check it out with a group of friends. The cemetery is not that hard to find if you have a GPS in your car. It is a dirt path blocked with gate so vehicles can’t get down the path and it is directly across from the end of the runway. The path is a bit long and if you have heard the rumors about it, you will probably be a bit scared but you shouldn’t be because it’s just a normal cemetery. Now let me clear one thing up, there is only one gate, not eight. We went about a third of a mile back in the woods and there is nothing there. The cemetery itself is very normal and nothing out of the ordinary. There are a few paths that go around the woods near the cemetery. One of them that i took goes down to a stream and then we crossed that and went about 100yrds back and there was just the backside of a house from the mainroad so we headed back. The only thing relatively creepy about Spider Gates is that satanists make strange symbols on the trees. Like I said, Spider Gates is just an ordinary private cemetery where people are buried.

I live in Massachusetts not far from this place. There are several wonderful old cemeteries around the state. I can say the reason for police watching these old cemeteries is because of those that invade and destroy. These places are history of those whom have passed. They need not be destroyed or ruined by those who venture in for the wrong reasons other then to view the interesting grave stones. There is no stone rubbing because it destroys the older tombstones to where they are unreadable. There has been in the past at times where others (those whom don’t appreciate history) have tampered with the graves. Therefore the towns and cities in which you will find these wonderful places want to protect them from idiots who have a lack of respect for the dead and for the history in which they preserve in these places. By all means if stated private property respect that or get permission. Locals do pay attention and do alert authorities. Show some respect and common sense. On another note: Some people are more in tune to connection with the past and or even another spiritual realm. Some do not. I do believe this. Yes, stories do play a part in how one views such places. I know I enjoy a good scary story. I don’t degrade anyone for what they want to believe.

Look! The truth is, Spider Gates Cemetary has been known to house spiders within the cemetary. This is very true and I recommend anyone wishing to witness this for themselves be prepared to encounter many spiders and spiderwebs. I’m still horrified from my experience at spidergates. Oh and for the eight gates…well I only witnessed one gate and I believe the other seven if there ever were…were destroyed and consumed by the many spiders that occupy the cemetary. Proceed with extreme caution!

When I went to the Spider Gates, I too, did not experience anything out of the norm. When exiting the “8th Gate” we were met by two cops who told us they found a body pretty much exactly where we were standing a week or two before. Then we found a meat grinder just randomly on the ground. First, I won’t go there again due to that fact. Second, it was not haunted at all. My grandmother’s house is haunted and you can usually always tell when something is in fact haunted whether its a chill, or just a feeling. This was NOT haunted.

I personally have dozens of family members (Southwick) buried at Spidergate. My great uncle Thomas paid to have one of the gates reproduced after it was vandalized/stolen. He is now buried there. Keep in mind that this is private property and the cemetery is still in use. If you visit this place, treat it with respect.

I went there three times at night back in 2000 with my friends, and now I will never go back there again (due to my fear of whatever might be down there, and also the cops). I’ve been in other cemetaries at night, but no place has ever matched the terrible feeling of fear that I got from being in this one. I experienced a lot of scary things, such as odd noises and things seen out of the corner of my eye, (which could have been my imagination.) What wasn’t my imagination was that the river behind the cemetary did have satanic graffiti sprayed on the rocks near it. This was back in 2000, so I can’t say if it’s still there now, but back then someone was down there either trying to scare other people or messing around with things they don’t understand.

The second time my friends and I went there I was too afraid to get out of the car and stayed behind with another friend. Three of our other friends walked down the path and came running as fast as they could back to the car about 5 minutes later. They all swore they saw a girl leaning up against a gravestone holding a baby in her arms with a candle in front of her. They saw her when they got to the gate, and almost as soon as they saw her, the candle blew out and my friends ran away. One night, three years after this happened my friend called me on the phone crying because she and some other friends had been talking about Spidergates and she was still afraid of what she had seen that night. It could have just been kids down there partying, but my friends said they saw only this one girl and no one else. There was also no noise that you would expect to hear from a bunch of teenagers hanging out and no other cars along the road.

I live about 20 minutes east of Worcester and almost everyone I’ve ever talked to about Spidergates has either been there and experienced something strange, or has friend who has a story about something weird happening in the place. One of my co-workers went down there in the 80’s during the daytime, and walked through the woods behind the cemetary. She came across an old, very run down shack, and when she looked inside the windows, a big full-course meal was set out on the table, although no one was inside or nearby. When she and her friends went back a days later, they couldn’t find the shack even though they were looking in the exact same area behind the river.

I’m really surprised that so many of you went there and experienced nothing at all!

Hi, I had a chance to enter Spider Gates one time but one of the people with a bunch of us didn’t want to leave his motorcycle by the street. So because of him we all left.

ok I am a investigator and I will be glad to tell you that there are not eight gates to this cemetery there is ony the one which is the front entrance. there are no gates in a museum anywhere either. but I am not going to say that there are not any unknown forces there that have scared people and started the stories but they are definately over exaggerated.
