Resurrection Mary

07.23.2005 | 12:31 pm | Bridgeview, Illinois, United States

One raining day, a woman was killed as she was leaving the ceremony. Today, she hitchhikes, in her wedding dress, along 79th street. After one picks her up for a ride, she vaishes, leaving the seats and car floor wet from that rainy night.

  1. THis story is all wrong. Mary was actually killed hitchiking when her car had broken down on prom night. She is now seen usually late at night along archer ave, which runs along side the cemetary. THose who have picked given her a ride, all report that she mysteriously vanishes from their site while sitting in the car.

  2. It is said that she was killed on her way back from the ball. You can see her walking along side the road. She will let you pick her up and either take her to the place where the ball was held or back to the cemetery were she is buried. Some have even reported being kissed by her and feeling her cold lips. The gates that surround the cemetery are said to have been bent from her hands. So if you have the chance to get up there by the cemetery stop and check to see if you can see her and if the gates are bent.. I know I will.

  4. Just to let all you people know. Not that long ago, me, my boyfriend and two others went to 79th and Archer road, and saw NOTHING!
We even went as close to the front gates, where it is said that “MARY” has bent the gates. All I know is that when I approached the gate, I placed my hands on the bar, there were infact markings on the bar. As if there were hand prints foarmed onto the bars. It was really creppy. And, while doing this, we left our headlights on to “see” something supernatural, which we didn’t. But all felt as if someone was watching us, comitt our acts. Werid!!!

  14. I’v lived about a mile away from the cemetary my entire life and have passed it on many occassions. Never have I seen a girl in a ball gown hitching a ride. In fact, I work directly across the street from Resurection Cemetary. Many of my family members are burried there. But since everyone has so many different takes on the legend, let me tell you what I’ve heard throughout my entire life.

One night, a young woman was attending a dance at the Willowbrook Ballroom in Willow Springs. I never really heard why she was hitchhiking. I never heard that her car broke down or anything. All I know is that as she attempted to get a ride there, she was struck by a drunk driver and never made it to the dance. So now her ghostly form has been seen trying to hitch a ride by numerous residents of Justice and Willow Springs. Sometimes, it is said that she’s picked up at the Willowbrook asking for a ride home, but disappears as you pass the cemetary. I’ve never seen her nor has anyone I’ve met, but that doesn’t mean this story is untrue.

Now as for the bars, I don’t recall the story being that Mary bent them, but rather someone else who was supposedly trapped in the cemetary. Now that I have seen. The bars are right on the main entrance gate. They have replaced the bars on several occassions, but those two bars somehow become bent again. Now, it could just be a couple of pranksters or people who want to keep the legend alive, but it is pretty creepy when you see it.

Oh, and the Mossalium (SP?) there is really creepy too. I went to use the bathroom there once and I heard humming and footsteps behind me in the hallway the whole time.

  17. Why do people have to try to ruin things? Get your facts streight before posting, and if your here to post to joke around don’t bother! You can find the information on the this story anywhere on the net. I did find somewhere a couple of times that on 2 different occasions 2 different officers on duty have seen her. I was there a few years ago and didn’t see her, this does not meen I’m dismissing the story. I went to look at the bars on/by the gates and found out they had been replaced a few years before I was there and the imprints of her hands have NOT returned. Before they replaced the bars they tried several times over to paint over the prints and they would keep reapearing. Really you should read Troy’s book, or even books by Ursala Beilski (spelling?).

  19. The bars on the gate used to rust into a hand print. They would be painted and treated but returned. They were finally removed and put somewhere in like the a bishops house for safe keeping. What I was told anyway. She actually walks down Old Archer road ( where I live )and rounds the curb to Archer road where the cemetery is. If you kept going you would be on Archer Ave. Confusing but true. WillowBrook Ballroom is on Old Archer Road also. There is a bar across the street called Chets Melody of love and is reported to be haunted also. If you sit on a certain bar stool it is said that you will get pregnant. On the other side of Resurrection Cemetery the gate are always being bent for no reason ( EX.CAR ACCIDENT ) They saqy it is the devil himself trying to get out or back in It surely is a strange place to live around but after 25 years you get used to the buses and cars and pranks around Halloween. No one has spotted her for a long time Maybe this year shell come around. I always watch out the window as I live off Old Archer between the ballroom and the cemetery. but alas no Mary

  21. I am a 44 year old mom and I have family buried there and I have taken my children there as well to not only visit our dead family but check out the story.
We were looking for our family (dead) and came across a grounds keeper he showed us where she was buried (R. Mary) He said he never had anything weird happen but has friends he works with had weird things and heard things at night that would make your skin creep.

There is no headstone but she is between her mother and her Aunt. There were flowers in the middle of the graves so someone knows she is there (maybe her family still living). We took photo’s and yes there are orbs in the photos but go figure there would be we WERE in a cemetery. The front gates did NOT have finger imprints as if she was getting in or out but it was definetly was weird. Discolored and in the shape of fingers, it just gave me a very creepy chill (as it did my kids).
So here you have it, belive it or not I choose to belive I was there, continue to go there and visit Mary and my family and the finger discoloring is always there and in the same spot.

  22. Folks, this what I think. The woman’s name was Mary Brigovi and was just about to celebrate her 21st birthday way back in 1934. She was coming home from a dance hall when she was tragically killed in a traffic accident. She was buried in Resurrection Cemetery in her favorite gown. They say she’s a ghostly hitchhiker because she’s trying to get home in South Daymon, but disappears in your back seat at the cemetery gate instead.

Now if you wanna see some scary **** then you have to go to “MUNKS” castle and touch the head of the stone that says private property thats in the middle of the road that leads right in the middle of the church and the castle it is said that if you touch the head and make a wish it will come true thats what i heard. But that is only if you do it before the munks come out the house and get your *** the rumor has it if the munks catch you before you leave they will cut your knees and make you kneel on salt now thats what I heard from several people. If anybody wants to try that go ahead go straight on Archer and pass the woods keep going straight passing Willow Springs Road it will be on the right hand side and then comment on what happen now I aint stupid enough to try it but some people are for the thrill.

  28. The actual story:

“Resurrection Mary” is the best-known ghost story in the Chicago area.

According to the legend, a young Polish girl (between 17 and 22) was killed in a car crash in the early 1930s and buried in Resurrection Cemetery. Her death occurred on the way back from a dance at the nearby O’Henry Ballroom (now called the Willowbrook Ballroom).

She is now encountered as a “Vanishing Hitchhiker”. Several people have reported picking her up as a hitchhiker, taking her to or from the ballroom. As the car passes Resurrection, she usually vanishes. She is described as looking like a living person, speaking very little, wearing a 1930’s ball gown. Sometimes her flesh is cool to the touch.

In a 1977 incident, a passerby saw a woman locked inside the fence of the cemetery after dark. Rather than stopping, he called the police, who came to let her out. When the police arrived, she was nowhere to be seen - but they discovered that two bars of the main gate had been bent outwards, and the bars bore the imprint of human hands. Officials quickly removed the bars - but, embarrassed, later re-installed them, using a blowtorch to obscure the handprints. The two burned areas can still be seen.

  30. Brandi’s story is the most accurate story. Yes,it’s the famous hitchiker ghost in ballroom dress and the gate are both true. My family are buried there and I go to cementary several times a year and have seen the two bars on the gate being replaced over the year with new bar or temporarly covered w/ chain link fence. It was an on-going thing with the bar until that painted the gate gold instead of green…I haven’t seen the two bars being damaged or replaced anymore.

  31. “Munks Castle”….heard that if you go there and the munks catch you hanging around, they will make you pray all night and let you go in the morning.

Mary is supposed to have been seen hitchhicking in a gown and if you pick her up, she will disappear in your car. That’s all I heard.

  32. 13 years ago I was doing an internship at ABC for show called Chicago Stories with Janet Davies, is no longer on the air - thougth that show 190 N is very similar. Anyway, we were gathering information to produce a show. One of our possible topics was going to be on this man, who had something called “Ghost Bus Tours” though is wasn’t Richard Crowe, it another guy, a competitor, I can’t think of his name. Anyway, I did the Ghost Bus Tour, didn’t see anything. However, this man had a lot of pictures of ghosts etc. things in Chicago.

I did see a picture that he broke in of the wrought iron bars and they were bent and looked like finger prints were burnt into the melted iron. Very strange, he had mentioned they were eventually removed.

He also had a videotape that someome had casually taped while on one of his tours. Has to be the spookiest thing I saw, and that was of a Monk, sitting on the first step inside of Jane Adam’s Hull house. It was very bizarre because you could see him, yet also see through him. He had his head bent down and was wearing a rob, let’s just say he looked very Menacing, I would venture to say he looked more like the Grim Reaper. I have since heard other people have seen about 4 monks at this location.

Another thing on the tape was of an Irish Mansion on the South side, where you clearly see a woman in a long white dress literally “glide” across the top floor while looking through the window, she then walks out on the balcony and glides rigt off the balcony. I had later read that she is the widow that used to live in that house.

We checked the tape for any tampering but it was authentic. Unfortunately we never ended up running the story, but it was some creepy stuff.

  34. As far as I have read on this story, the closest to the truth is Pete who posted in 4/2006. I have seen this story several times on the show “Unsolved Mysteries”. As for the account about the man who picked her up and took her home it is all true according to the broadcast, only when he drove past the cemetary, she asked him to stop and then she disappeared into the cemetary. He went to her mother’s home the next day after Mary had told him her name when he met her at the ballroom. Also it is true that cabbies have picked her up as well. Check it out if you can from past archives at the unsolved website if you can.

We went in the parking lot of Chet’s Melody Lounge, which is across the street and we busted out the witch board, (similar to a ouija board but made by whiches and is circular). Anyways, we went by there and didn’t see anything. The bars were still there, but it looked more like rust than handprints on the bars.

  37. i need to write this cos i was a sceptic….

me and my ex moved to a house in glasgow… lentran street.. a few years back… my ex told me she thought one of the kids had came back from school and she got up from her bed and found herself chasing shadows as she ran round like a circle kitchen/ living room and hall…. she told me that nite and i pissed myself laughn tho she was as white as a sheet.. i made a joke about the spirit paying towards the mortgage. Anyways a few days later our neighbour told her about a young lass was seen at the end of the hall near the toilet and outside door again i laughed it off. Our relationship was going downhill one day i was in the living room and she in the bedroom when both of us heard what sounded like a window being hit by a small stone…. i ran into room to see if someone hit the window but my ex said it came from the room i was in… baffled i thought nothing of it… nothing happened for ages except our relationship slipped and i let her friend go on holiday with my ex in my stead.. i watched our little kid who was about 9 months old… we both slept in the double bed.. anyhow one night i was awoken by very loud music from the living room, i jumped up and ran in thinking i was gonna meet a burglar but nobody was there i put the hi-fi off and put it down to a timer and went back to sleep. A few days later whilst sleeping i awoke but could not lift my head but could move other parts of my body, my eyes were open and i had the sensation of what felt like a hand holding my the front of my face down and even tho i could not lift my head it wasn’t like the hand was forcing me down with heavy force, it was like a gentle pressure but with a strange amount of pressure. At first i got a little scared but then i managed to blurt out “don’t do that again” and was immediately or appeared to be released instantly…. i know some people have written in about mary and treat it as a joke just as i did before my experience tho i never saw anyone it was amazing to feel such power that held my head down with no force at all. The truth is until we experience something ourselves we will always joke about spirits… all i can say is i waited till we split and moved to different houses before admitting to my ex that something or some presence was definately there…. like all other sceptics i still wonder why i do not get to see my own family? … however i did meet a medium after being asked by my sister to attend to make up the numbers for a private reading and i was blown away by what the message that was given to me but thats another story… and no the medium did not ask questions and told us not to say anything except react to what he was passing on… he used to be on radio but has been on sky tv and is doing stuff for channel 5 in uk but what he came out with was utterly amazing… am now relieved that there is life after death….. am converted

They need to correct this story, and tell all the story.

I have been though the area many times, I have worked, gone out there just for Resurrection Cemetery, plus I have family out there. I love the people who go to a place just one time, and then conclude a place is haunted or not it gets me every time! You could have come at the right/wrong time, and even a place like Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery that has provided tons of evidence to me and my friends, is not always going to provide evidence! Go to my website http://www.ricsim78.net and you can see some of the evidence that we have gathered, places we have investigated, and may learn a thing or two about investigating the super natural.

  43. the way I heard the story from my aunt who was a resident of Chicago, Mary was a young Polish girl, who went to a dance and was killed in an auto wreck on the way home. This happened in the 20’s. She was buried in the cemetary on Archer Road and when people would drive by they’d see her standing outside and pick her up to give her a lift home. My aunt also said back in the days of the cars that had “running boards” some people claimed to have seen something in their side mirrors, jump onto the running boards as if trying to hitch a ride, and when they’d stop their car, no one was there.

  44. i hate to be the bearer of bad news but i live next door to the cemetary and my family has lived in this house since it was built and no one has seen anything strange. my great grandparents say that mary was killed walking home from a dance “ball” in willow springs and it was a big deal for their time and they think the story was created to help cope with the tragedy. it was told to me that the driver that hit mary was intoxicated which at that time was an accepted thing. as far as bachelor’s grove goes i’ve heard some stories from friends but myself and a group has made many visits and we have gone as far as to take evp and elecromagnetic equipment there for studies and come back with nothing, not even a cold spot. i was dissapointed considering this is supposed to be a hot spot. the only place we have investigated and gotten a true scare was the old manteno asylum. if u do go there it is owned by the state of illinosi so without permission u will be arrested immediately. we got audio and video footage there of a woman hanging in a white tattered gown and children talking and playing in one of the rooms. there were severe temp drops on a 70 degree as well. in one room our temp went from 73 to 31 in a matter of seconds, we actually saw our breath, then shot up to 86. it was pretty creepy and we do investigations of this type quite often.

  45. I’ve heard this story before and have never seen it first hand. What I can tell you is about 10 years ago a bunch of friends and I decided to jump the gate and find Mary’s “grave.” It was winter time and there were other cars driving by. Their headlights would reflect off the snow and headstones and freak you out! The “grave” was allegedly marked by a tree and we didn’t see anything supernatural at the site. In fact, we spent more time scaring each other. However, there is one detail that I won’t forget. It had recently snowed pretty heavy so there was plenty of snow everywhere on the ground, EXCEPT where the alleged grave was. There was no snow like it had been shoveled away but there were no other foot prints in the snow and the grass wasn’t matted down. It didn’t appear to be in a particular shape. Having lived in Chicago all my life I haven’t seen snow at least 6″ deep that suddenly just didn’t cover a certain area of land. I mean it was just gone; 6″ snow around the edge and none at all inside. It didn’t fade out. Maybe explainable but Ive never seen anything like it and eerie none the less.

  46. I still don’t think the real story is told here. I am from the area as is my family and I have more relatives buried at this cemetary then I can count. The story as I have heard it is as follows:

In about 1912 - the year could be verified, as you’ll see below - a young girl turned thirteen and was taken out to celebrate her birthday. The last stop for the evening was the O’Henry Ballroom, which still exists and is now the Willowbrook Ballroom. On the way home the family crossed a particularly rough train track crossing. Since at that time cars had open sides, when the car bounced over the tracks, Mary was thrown from the car and was killed. The reason the year is important is because at the time, there was a grave digger’s strike going on. Resurrection Cemetery was the only cemetery in the area that had grave diggers working. Mary’s family had burial plots at a different cemetery. What they were doing at the time to deal with the grave diggers strike was burying people temporarily at Resurrection Cemetery with the expectation of moving them once the strike was over. The legend says that the grave diggers were not a very responsible bunch, so when it came time to move the bodies, they found that they were having a hard time figuring out who was who and where each of the bodies actually was. It is said that Mary was never moved. The cemetery just told her family that she was, and so her spirit can not rest.
The most reputable sighting of Mary’s ghost was reported by a Chicago Police Officer. After the Cemetery was closed one day, he passed by and saw a small girl standing inside the gate - locked in - holding onto the vertical metal bars of the gate with her hands. He quickly went to the station to get bolt cutters so he could cut the lock and then give the girl a ride home. When he returned the girl was gone, but the bars were bent apart and hand prints looked like they were burned onto the gate where he had seen the little girls hands just a short while before. They straightened the bars and painted over the hand prints many times but they always came back. They eventually replaced the gate to solve the problem. There are also numerous reports of people - especially taxi drivers - that pick up a girl in a white dress near the cemetery and she asks to be driven to the ballroom or from the ballroom to the Cemetery and when they get there she vanishes while leaving the car or she vinishes while they drive from one place to the next.

    September 7th, 2007

Erin, Joe, Seth and I were all planning on going to Resurrection Mary to camp out to get some proof. As soon as we were all finished setting up camp, we started to get a little scared, with occasional chills down our backs. What we were intrested at first was how everyone kept saying that when ever people painted or fixed the bars where Mary pulled apart, they would always come back, forever leaving marks. So, Joe and I both brought white paint and a camera’s. Before we went to bed, we set up camera’s in various places, like, by the gate, by her stone, and a couple on different trees. (and don’t worry we had permission.) Then we re-painted the bars, with the camera right next to it incase anything happened. The next morning, we checked the camera’s…with nothing, except for two. This shocked us right out of our pants it was so scary. The first camera we looked at was the one by Mary’s stone, and there was somthing quite scary. We saw, a young beautiful girl in a white gown stepping out of the ground near the grave stone. The camera that was by the gate, was SO scary, I nearly fainted. In this footage, there showed a young woman (again) in a white gown, pulling open the bars and scraping her hands on it, leaving blood marks. Very eerie night.

Sarah, Seth, Erin, and I all went out again to find more. This time, we decided to acctualy stay up, with our lanterns and flashlights, and watch. and bnoy, even though I have no proof, I have a great memory, and I don’t lie either. We saw Mary, herself, in person, (well, in ghost for her) going to the new bars, and then, insted she turns around and comes straight at us. That’s right, straight at us unbelieveable huh? Acctually, she was goling back to her grave, and sat, down. We all looked back at the bars, and saw they were ruined agian. we looked back at her grave, and she was gone.

So now, you know what happened to me and my friends, and now understand that Resurrectin Mary is quite real. Oh, and for all of you jerks out there and sya that I am lying…..

GO JUMP OFF A FREAKING CLIFF!
