Resurrection Mary
One raining day, a woman was killed as she was leaving the ceremony. Today, she hitchhikes, in her wedding dress, along 79th street. After one picks her up for a ride, she vaishes, leaving the seats and car floor wet from that rainy night.

Guys if u want to feel the real fright and spookiness
just visit the forgotten bachelor’s grove cemetery near midlothian turnpike.A black phantom car sometimes chases people and is seen near the lake section of cemetery.
Friends, I had a personal sighting of this car.
IT JUST FLOATED IN MID AIR AND DISAPPEARED IN FRONT OF MY OWN EYES!!

the way I heard the story from my aunt who was a resident of Chicago, Mary was a young Polish girl, who went to a dance and was killed in an auto wreck on the way home. This happened in the 20’s. She was buried in the cemetary on Archer Road and when people would drive by they’d see her standing outside and pick her up to give her a lift home. My aunt also said back in the days of the cars that had “running boards” some people claimed to have seen something in their side mirrors, jump onto the running boards as if trying to hitch a ride, and when they’d stop their car, no one was there.

i hate to be the bearer of bad news but i live next door to the cemetary and my family has lived in this house since it was built and no one has seen anything strange. my great grandparents say that mary was killed walking home from a dance “ball” in willow springs and it was a big deal for their time and they think the story was created to help cope with the tragedy. it was told to me that the driver that hit mary was intoxicated which at that time was an accepted thing. as far as bachelor’s grove goes i’ve heard some stories from friends but myself and a group has made many visits and we have gone as far as to take evp and elecromagnetic equipment there for studies and come back with nothing, not even a cold spot. i was dissapointed considering this is supposed to be a hot spot. the only place we have investigated and gotten a true scare was the old manteno asylum. if u do go there it is owned by the state of illinosi so without permission u will be arrested immediately. we got audio and video footage there of a woman hanging in a white tattered gown and children talking and playing in one of the rooms. there were severe temp drops on a 70 degree as well. in one room our temp went from 73 to 31 in a matter of seconds, we actually saw our breath, then shot up to 86. it was pretty creepy and we do investigations of this type quite often.

I’ve heard this story before and have never seen it first hand. What I can tell you is about 10 years ago a bunch of friends and I decided to jump the gate and find Mary’s “grave.” It was winter time and there were other cars driving by. Their headlights would reflect off the snow and headstones and freak you out! The “grave” was allegedly marked by a tree and we didn’t see anything supernatural at the site. In fact, we spent more time scaring each other. However, there is one detail that I won’t forget. It had recently snowed pretty heavy so there was plenty of snow everywhere on the ground, EXCEPT where the alleged grave was. There was no snow like it had been shoveled away but there were no other foot prints in the snow and the grass wasn’t matted down. It didn’t appear to be in a particular shape. Having lived in Chicago all my life I haven’t seen snow at least 6″ deep that suddenly just didn’t cover a certain area of land. I mean it was just gone; 6″ snow around the edge and none at all inside. It didn’t fade out. Maybe explainable but Ive never seen anything like it and eerie none the less.

I still don’t think the real story is told here. I am from the area as is my family and I have more relatives buried at this cemetary then I can count. The story as I have heard it is as follows:
In about 1912 – the year could be verified, as you’ll see below – a young girl turned thirteen and was taken out to celebrate her birthday. The last stop for the evening was the O’Henry Ballroom, which still exists and is now the Willowbrook Ballroom. On the way home the family crossed a particularly rough train track crossing. Since at that time cars had open sides, when the car bounced over the tracks, Mary was thrown from the car and was killed. The reason the year is important is because at the time, there was a grave digger’s strike going on. Resurrection Cemetery was the only cemetery in the area that had grave diggers working. Mary’s family had burial plots at a different cemetery. What they were doing at the time to deal with the grave diggers strike was burying people temporarily at Resurrection Cemetery with the expectation of moving them once the strike was over. The legend says that the grave diggers were not a very responsible bunch, so when it came time to move the bodies, they found that they were having a hard time figuring out who was who and where each of the bodies actually was. It is said that Mary was never moved. The cemetery just told her family that she was, and so her spirit can not rest.
The most reputable sighting of Mary’s ghost was reported by a Chicago Police Officer. After the Cemetery was closed one day, he passed by and saw a small girl standing inside the gate – locked in – holding onto the vertical metal bars of the gate with her hands. He quickly went to the station to get bolt cutters so he could cut the lock and then give the girl a ride home. When he returned the girl was gone, but the bars were bent apart and hand prints looked like they were burned onto the gate where he had seen the little girls hands just a short while before. They straightened the bars and painted over the hand prints many times but they always came back. They eventually replaced the gate to solve the problem. There are also numerous reports of people – especially taxi drivers – that pick up a girl in a white dress near the cemetery and she asks to be driven to the ballroom or from the ballroom to the Cemetery and when they get there she vanishes while leaving the car or she vinishes while they drive from one place to the next.

I am a 16 year old girl and I have been to Resurrection Mary a few times. Here are each of the things that heppened on each day.
September 7th, 2007
Erin, Joe, Seth and I were all planning on going to Resurrection Mary to camp out to get some proof. As soon as we were all finished setting up camp, we started to get a little scared, with occasional chills down our backs. What we were intrested at first was how everyone kept saying that when ever people painted or fixed the bars where Mary pulled apart, they would always come back, forever leaving marks. So, Joe and I both brought white paint and a camera’s. Before we went to bed, we set up camera’s in various places, like, by the gate, by her stone, and a couple on different trees. (and don’t worry we had permission.) Then we re-painted the bars, with the camera right next to it incase anything happened. The next morning, we checked the camera’s…with nothing, except for two. This shocked us right out of our pants it was so scary. The first camera we looked at was the one by Mary’s stone, and there was somthing quite scary. We saw, a young beautiful girl in a white gown stepping out of the ground near the grave stone. The camera that was by the gate, was SO scary, I nearly fainted. In this footage, there showed a young woman (again) in a white gown, pulling open the bars and scraping her hands on it, leaving blood marks. Very eerie night.

Sarah, Seth, Erin, and I all went out again to find more. This time, we decided to acctualy stay up, with our lanterns and flashlights, and watch. and bnoy, even though I have no proof, I have a great memory, and I don’t lie either. We saw Mary, herself, in person, (well, in ghost for her) going to the new bars, and then, insted she turns around and comes straight at us. That’s right, straight at us unbelieveable huh? Acctually, she was goling back to her grave, and sat, down. We all looked back at the bars, and saw they were ruined agian. we looked back at her grave, and she was gone.
So now, you know what happened to me and my friends, and now understand that Resurrectin Mary is quite real. Oh, and for all of you jerks out there and sya that I am lying…..
GO JUMP OFF A FREAKING CLIFF!

The most accurate version of the story concerns a young girl who was killed while hitchhiking down Archer Avenue in the early 1930’s. Apparently, she had spent the evening dancing with a boyfriend at the O’ Henry Ballroom. At some point, they got into an arguement and Mary (as she has come to be called) stormed out of the place. Even though it was a cold winter’s night, she thought, she would rather face a cold walk home than another minute with her boorish lover. She left the ballroom and started walking up Archer Avenue. She had not gotten very far when she was struck and killed by a passing automobile. The driver fled the scene and Mary was left there to die. Her grieving parents buried her in Resurrection Cemetery, wearing a white dress and her dancing shoes. Since that time, her spirit has been seen along Archer Avenue, perhaps trying to return to her grave after one last night among the living. This is the story that I grew up with and is found to be the most accurate. I myself have never seen “Mary” but have heard many many stories of her being seen.

Oh and Kathy, how in God’s name did you get “permission” to camp inside or outside a locked cemetary and were also allowed to paint on the tree’s. Highly unlikely that someone would let some random kids deface the deads final resting place. LAME!

Obviously, there have been sightings, and this story REALLY did happen. Though throughout the years it has been altered a bit. I grew up in Oak Forest and that was a local haunting that many of my crazy family members went to check out along with Bachelor’s Grove–another very haunted place–, but I will agree to the bending of the bars being replaced and it reoccuring. This story of a woman named Mary and the ball room incident and all the asking for rides from MEN have occured. There have been books, newspaper articles, and even follow ups done by the famous Seymor Simon. I believe. Even though I have never seen anything personally, it does not mean it does not exist.

Mary was killed in a car crash on her way home from a night out dancing. Her body does lay in Resurrection Cemetery on 79th (aka Archer Ave.)Men have picked her up and taken for a night of dancing, in which they have noticed that she is chilled to the bone, upon passing the Cemetery she vanishes. Be nice there are Chicagoians out there that know the Story …..

Not saying anyone is wrong, but as a Chicago Native the storys goes she left the ball early because she was under the impression that her boyfriend had been flirting with another woman all night, so she got mad and left the party to walk home, during her journey she was being harrased by some other guys that saw her walking, asking her if she wanted a ride one jumps out of the car and starts fondling her dress throwingit up over her and such, she starting running fell and busted her head wide open on a big pice or cement, she laid for hours until finally one of the party goers noticed the bundle on the ground police where called and that that. How do i know. My granddad was born 1891 and he attended the party, well I call him granddad but he is my grandmothers father. He passed on a couple years ago, but my grandad told us about a lot of of old stories you now hear about, but I was smart I taped recorded most of our conversations.

It was a dark at the time i drove into the area after traveling for about 6 hours in 1979. I had felt I was lost and was thinking where i might have turned wrong. I like having the top down even with the cold night air, of course my heater and radio were on. I saw something out of the corner of my eye, startled i see a woman sitting on the passenger side of my old Delta 98. It scared me but she looked friendly enough dressed nicely like a girl would for a high school dance. I quickly thought back as to when i was going slow enough for her to jump in. It was very dark and i could feel the cold coming off of her. I asked her how she got into the car. She spoke, “Could you give me a ride home”. I blew off the fact she jumped into the car, easy for a laid back 17 year old with a nice looking girl. We started off down the road I turned the heat up more and gave her my jean jacket because you could really feel the cold come off her like it does when someone walks into the house after being out in the freezing winter Iowa night. She gave me directions to her parents home. We made some small talk. I remember warning her about hitchhiking and jumping into cars which she replied that I was nice enough and asked if i had a girlfriend. I dont remember all the small talk we had. It seemed a short amount of time had passed when I looked over and she was gone.

all you peop0le need to check your stories before you write comments, and before any of you start your b.s. I am a certified paranormal investigator, resurection mary was killed while walking down archer ave from the willow brook dance hall, she was killed while walking down archer and now she hitchikes on archer ave. when she gets into your car she gives you an adress and while heading down archer twards the adress she takes off out of the car and runs twards the cemetary gates. so please double check you facts when your going to post something and try to make someone else feel stupid, because you just make an *** of yourself

Brandi knows what she is talking about, that is the exact story I have heard from people and looking up history, that is exactly how the legend came to be. I have been though the area many times, I have worked, gone out there just for Resurrection Cemetery, plus I have family out there. I love the people who go to a place just one time, and then conclude a place is haunted or not it gets me every time! You could have come at the right/wrong time, and even a place like Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery that has provided tons of evidence to me and my friends, is not always going to provide evidence! Go to my website http://www.ricsim78.net and you can see some of the evidence that we have gathered, places we have investigated, and may learn a thing or two about investigating the super natural.
