Riders Inn
People spending the night in this hotel have reportedly been accosted by a menagerie of apparitions. There have been reports of hearing loud voices in the next room when the next room is empty. Visitors have also said to hear someone walking within the walls of the building as well as the hallway. Inside the inn, there is also one door that will not stay shut, even after 2 by 4s and nails have been used.
I was born and raised in Painesville, and I’ve never even heard of The Rider’s Inn. Where exactly is this place. Just curious as to it’s location.

Perhaps they are reffering to the Riders Tavern…….I believe it’s down the road from Hellriegel’s. My mom was born & raised in Painesville & tells me that they used to hang out there all the time. She never mentioned any haunting though.

I have lived in Painseville since i was about two years old and just recently I went to riders inn to apply for a job and just walking in there it was very spooky. the lady also told me that i would have to learn of all the ghost stories so we could tell them to the guest if i got the job well i never got it (they told me to come back later) but it would have more then likely been an awesome expierince!!!!!!!!!

I think that people are crazey if they know that inn is haunted and still stay there by the way I lived in this house on Lindon Ave. in Zanesville Ohio and every night at 4:00 am you would hear a girl scream because we had a blacony on our stairs and in the 19090’s a girl of around the age of 9.
Comment by sdfsda | 10.12.2006 | 7:08 pm
It would sure be nice if everyone would proof read their comments before they submit them. “sdfsda” what about the girl on your balcony???? Oh yeah, and the year 19090’s. Okay. What a bunch of mish-mosh

Comment by jessey | 10.14.2006 | 9:04 pm
this story is just silly. it’s a hotel, of course you are going to hear loud voices and people walking in the hallways.

I personally think this place is haunted because me and my daughter, my friend and her daughter stayed the night in Susan’s room and my friend stayed in room 10. My daughter witnessed a picture falling and she was right there and didn’t touch it. I my self stayed up till 4:30am. Around 3:00am, the doorknob started to turn. I locked it before I sat down and was video taping. My friend was really drunk so I thought it was her messing with me so I opened the door and no one was there. I went to her room and she was passed out cold along with her daughter. The next morning, we went to get our stuff together and the night before we bought 10 roast beef sandwitches from Arby’s and I had 2 and she had 2 and both our daughters only had one. That leaves 5 left. Only 3 were left. I thought that was odd if a ghost did take food. I did take pictures with my digital video/camera, and 2 pictures had an orange orb, and the other was blue. But it was a wonderful time and a very welcoming place. We are working on going back here real soon.

I know of this place, my mom was raised up around Painesville, and she had told me at one time years ago, there use to be tunnels for slaves. Where there could get away to the river. This is a very old Inn on Rt. 20…dan

The Rider’s Inn is right down the street from me and it is a wonderful establishment. Very old and unique. The house used to be owned by Susan who was wealthy but wasn’t very pretty at all. She married and soon mysteriously died. She never left. She’s friendly and I feel nothing but warmth and a sense of welcome when I visit. I never had an expierience with her and my family that stayed there when I got married hadn’t noticed anything either, but I believe the stories. You can feel it.

I live in Mentor, Ohio not far from Rider’s Inn on Route 20 by the Mentor/Painesville border. My daughter and I drove to it one night and drove through the parking lot at night. We took pictures in the parking lot of the place. When I had the pictures developed, there were a couple of orbs hanging around the windows of the building. We also broke into a cemetary at night and in three photos, I caught two orbs that were following us around. One was big and the other smaller. They were in different parts of the picture so they weren’t anomalies (defects). Take pictures and dont take them to CVS or Wallgreens cause they have machines that develop them. Make sure when you have them developed you leave specific instructions to DEVELOP ALL PICTURES, POSSIBLE GHOST PICTURES. I know its funny but some places wont develop dark pictures.

I know Rider’s Inn and the owner very well. The establishment is now almost 200 years old and has been an Inn on the original Oregon Trail for just about as many years. As for Suzanne, her story may or may not be true but the real importance of the Inn is its history as a stop on the underground railroad and the help that was given to many escaping slaves. Now Jason, the “resident psychic”, if he were really psychic, would know that the woman being refered to is called Suzanne not Susan. So, if you do believe in ghosts and plan to stop by to say HI, it would behoove you to call her by her proper name.
The Inn is a warm, wonderful, welcoming establishment and very much worth a visit! It’s located at 792 Mentor Avenue, Painesville, Ohio.

I live in LeRoy, about 12 minutes from Riders Inn. I have heard the stories and I know Riders Inn owners use these stories to their advantage. They offer Halloween dinners and tours. The Plain Dealer travel section in June has a link that talks about horrific visions seen at local hotels but usually they are harmless stories.
I dont believe in ghosts, all in the mind I think. If, and thats a big if, you actually encounter one I would suggest they are more likely demons. Read your Bible folks.

Rider’s Inn was opened by Joseph Rider in 1812 to provide shelter to weary travelers en route to new ventures out west. Situated on the rough-and-tumble stagecoach route from Buffalo, New York to Cleveland, Ohio, Rider’s soon became an oasis of hospitality in the Western Reserve. Later, the Inn became a stop on the underground railroad and a retreat for returned Civil War soldiers. The Rider Family operated the hostelry until 1902 when it fell on hard times. After the discovery of a short-lived hot spring, George Randall, from New York, bought the Inn in 1922 and added a dining room and speakeasy, and enlarged the north wing. From 1940 to 1979, the Lutz Brothers operated the Inn and added the traditional Sunday Stagecoach Breakfast which is continued today. After their retirement, the Inn saw several difficult years until 1988 when owner Elaine Crane and her mother, Elizabeth Roemisch, completely refurbished the establishment into a beautiful country inn located in the college town of Painesville.

There is no way possible that you lived in Painesville Ohio and have never heard of the Rider’s Inn. Why would you lie about that?
Comment by Mary Donnelly | 10.16.2007 | 3:38 am
I grew up in Mentor and have worked in Painesville for the last seven years. This is the first I have heard of anyone sayig it was actally haunted. my sister in law stayed there on her wedding night and did not have any unusual phenomen occur. There are tunnels underneath where they hide slaves as part of the underground railroad, though I have been told hat tours are no longer available due to the deterioated condition. It is located on Mentor Ave directly across from Chestnut st.

Yes, Suzanne is real. She opens the door when ever the building is in danger. Go to Morley library and check out the defunct Painesville Telegraph newspaper during the renovation years 1982-85 or so on microfilm. You’ll find police reports where the cops responded to the front door being open in the middle of the night. They never found anyone inside, but each time something was seriously wrong - a fire, a broken water line flooding the basement, an electrical problem that was one spark away from taking the place down…..Suzanne loves her home!

To all the sceptics out there, our group Seekers Paranormal, spent 1 night at the Inn and I can tell you that we aquired rock solid proof that there is paranormal activity. We documented many Orbs and light anomolies,we also had personal expieriences and a general uneasy feeling while downstairs in the middle of the night, and I am relatively sure that If you were to inquire about it,the owner would be more than happy to show you the DVD with the video evidence we collected. We were also treated just like family while we were there and enjoyed some wonderful food and conversation. We as a group are planning a return trip for another hunt very soon.
