Riders Inn
People spending the night in this hotel have reportedly been accosted by a menagerie of apparitions. There have been reports of hearing loud voices in the next room when the next room is empty. Visitors have also said to hear someone walking within the walls of the building as well as the hallway. Inside the inn, there is also one door that will not stay shut, even after 2 by 4s and nails have been used.

Yes, Suzanne is real. She opens the door when ever the building is in danger. Go to Morley library and check out the defunct Painesville Telegraph newspaper during the renovation years 1982-85 or so on microfilm. You’ll find police reports where the cops responded to the front door being open in the middle of the night. They never found anyone inside, but each time something was seriously wrong – a fire, a broken water line flooding the basement, an electrical problem that was one spark away from taking the place down…..Suzanne loves her home!

To all the sceptics out there, our group Seekers Paranormal, spent 1 night at the Inn and I can tell you that we aquired rock solid proof that there is paranormal activity. We documented many Orbs and light anomolies,we also had personal expieriences and a general uneasy feeling while downstairs in the middle of the night, and I am relatively sure that If you were to inquire about it,the owner would be more than happy to show you the DVD with the video evidence we collected. We were also treated just like family while we were there and enjoyed some wonderful food and conversation. We as a group are planning a return trip for another hunt very soon.

This story is true. I have lived in Painesville all my life, and it has been experienced by many. A co-worker saw the image of a civil war soldier. It use to be an underground railroad stop.

I went to the Rider’s Inn with my husband and did not feel anything weird, but it is a dark, dank place. I had fun there, and shortly thereafter I read an article that it was haunted. I guess it could be. I’d like to have seen or heard something funny, but nothing out of the ordinary happened. We had dinner, partied at the bar and then went to our room. Lovely room with a big bed. 4 poster I believe, but could be wrong. I know I didn’t like the stairs. They were old and made a squeaky-like sound, but we did have fun.. The only downfall is that a waitress promised us a kitten but when we went back to pick it up, she said she decided to keep them all, so I said I would never return and so far, I haven’t returned. One waitress ruined my trip to the Rider’s Inn. Watch who you employ….Lisa

I know that the inn is haunted. You can just feel it when you walk in. It is one of my favorite places to go. I stayed 1 night nothing happened but you can just feel someone watching over you. And really dave and steve if you can not say anything nice don’t say anything at all. Elaine is a lovely woman. She is like family to my husband and I. Be nice!!!!

My maternal grandmother was born and raised in Rider’s Tavern or Inn which her ancestor Joseph Rider built around 1810. The stories of ghosts and it’s being a part of the underground railroad are all fiction designed to hype business. No one ever heard such stories before recently.

Jason will be speaking on the paranormal at Rider’s Inn each Friday in October. Dinner and the speaking is $29. This should be fun.
Do I beleive in it all? No -perhaps I will change my mind after hearing the speaker and talking to others. Regardless, legends and tales and mysteries are facinating just the same. I will be at one of the dinners on October 9.
Painsville does have it’s history and legends. Have you heard of Stephanie of Lake Erie College from the 1800s? As the story goes, In the early years of this previously “all girls” college Stephanie hung herself in the bell tower of Lake Erie College. The bell still tolls today…….and Stephanie’s screem still haunts Lake Erie College Hall which used to be the girl’s dormitory. The 4th floor is now locked and no admission is allowed. The rumor is that Stephanie was expecting which was a terrible shame in years gone by.
Have you heard of the old Steele Mansion in Painesville. I talked to the former mansion caretaker. She said Steele mansion has 4 ghosts including an older man, 2 children, and one of the female chefs. All of these old mansions had servants at one time. The story goes that Horace Steele owned a bank in Painesville. Self inflicted fate eventually caught up to him as he was caught embezeling money from the bank. You want to see a Haunted House? Steele mansion fits the profile….be careful though…it is private property. Hopefully one day it will be restored….Save the Mansion! I am told that professional roofers accidentily set it on fire as they were trying to melt the heavy gigantic icecles from the roof with a blow torch.
All these sites are along the historical strip of Mentor Avenue in Painesville.
Hey – Give Elaine Crane a break. She has restored and preserved a fine historical establishment. Many people receive pleasure enjoying the history and legends as well.

I grew up in Mentor and have worked in Painesville for the last seven years. This is the first I have heard of anyone sayig it was actally haunted. my sister in law stayed there on her wedding night and did not have any unusual phenomen occur. There are tunnels underneath where they hide slaves as part of the underground railroad, though I have been told hat tours are no longer available due to the deterioated condition. It is located on Mentor Ave directly across from Chestnut st.
