Roberson Mansion

Binghamton, New York
By Shannon Reinbold-Gee

With its beautiful woodwork and stained glass windows, the Roberson Mansion in New York’s Southern Tier has more than breathtaking architecture and a great sense of history. It seems to have ghosts.
Built in 1904, the Roberson Mansion in Binghamton, New York was constructed for Alonzo Roberson, Jr. and his family.

The site originally opened to the public in 1954. Since then, visitors to the Mansion have reported the sensation that they are not alone or that they are being watched. Strange noises and cold spots are reported as well as mysterious footsteps where no living person is seen walking. Doors reportedly slam when people are being too nosy, so stick with your tour guide! Perhaps most interestingly, some visitors have reportedly met Alonzo Jr. himself in the elevator.

Active in the community and a gifted businessman, Alonzo Jr. and Margaret were glad to give back to the local folks and organizations that supported their vision. When Alonzo Jr. died in 1934, in his will he left the mansion to the community for educational purposes (although it seems he didn’t specify exactly in what form that education might be). His wife died 20 years later in another of their Binghamton-area homes.

There seems nothing to be frightened of in the Roberson Mansion. People believe the ghostly presences they sense in Roberson Mansion are none other than Alonzo and his wife, Margaret, reliving a loving and beautiful time from the lives they shared together. Or perhaps this is part of the education that Alonzo wished for—giving visitors hope that there is an existence beyond simple death…
The Mansion is open to visitors Wednesday through Sunday except on major holidays and the first two weeks of January.

I visited this museum back in 1999 while visiting the university in town and I felt uneasy while walking around the house with the other person I was with. There was no one else visiting the museum while we were there until later on in our walk around the house. On the second floor I walked into a room that was dark but had windows so some daylight was coming in. I went into the large room alone and turned to my left and saw a figure and screamed because it startled me I ran out of the room because I thought it was a joke being played on me then turned back to see who it was and no one was there and the figure was gone. I continued the tour with the person I was there with to the third floor and it was earily quite and I felt creeped out like someone was watching us and I had to get out of there. Once I was back in the science centre I felt better.

I have been to the roberson center and it really is that scary. I didn’t see any images or anything like that. It does have a weird feel to it though. It does feel like someone is watching you.

I went to the mansion with a guy this last July as we went ghost hunting there. I took a small recorder with me, to try to see if I could get an EVP aka unexplained voices. When the guy I was with was talking to the guy who worked there, my recorder that I had turned off and put in my pocket, came on by itself! Holy you know what! And I know now the reason why it came on is that a women recorded herself on the recorder! I played it back when I got home, and I heard a women laughing. She thought it was funny to scare me lol! I take it to be the wife of Mr. Roberson. Funny but scary!

Well I will give everyone an update on Roberson Mansion Over the holiday seasons I have took photographs and I would have one picture in a piticular area have a glowing orb above the grand piano. Is it a coincedince that out of the whole mansion only one room would have the ball of light. It is not dust nor a reflection of light? Who knows but it is very interesting. It could have been a favorite room where the family hung together. If anyone has taken pictures or will take pictures keep a sharp eye you may come across somthing! Thanks For reading!

i have heard about roberson, but the mansion across the street is haunted! i am a long time resident of binghamton and my husband had an office in the back a few years back. i would go in at night to take care of files and do computer work. that is when you had a computer room. well one night i was there alone on the second floor when i felt very cold and had the feeling someone was watching me. i turned around and looked out the door and saw nothing, but felt very uneasy. i decieded to leave. i went down the stairs to the first floor and opened the door to the main hallway, at the end of the hallway there is a huge fireplace with 2 large chairs. i stop dead because i saw 2 white ghostly figures sitting in the chairs. i asked if i could help them (i didn’t know what else to do i had to go by them to get out of the building)the figures just got up and disappeared. i went straigh home and my husband said i was white and asked if i felt okay. i told him what had happened and never went back alone at night again.
