Real Haunted House

Ruins of Gore Orphanage

Loraine County, Ohio
By Cecilia

If you travel down a winding road through the thick of the woods, you will eventually come across a bridge, a field, an overgrown foundation, and a short sandstone pillar. This is what remains of the Gore Orphanage, one of Ohioâ??s most haunted locations.  Although it was originally known as the Light and Hope Orphanage, the place earned its nickname from the shape of the land and, later, the gruesome story that accompanied it.

Founded by Reverend Johann Sprunger and his wife Katharina in 1902, the place was a nightmare even before being supposedly engulfed in flames. The couple shared a depressing, unfortunate history, which included the destruction of their previous orphanage and two other businesses in Indiana, as well as the death of their two children. However, nothing could compare to the atrocities inflicted upon the children they were currently made to take care of at Light and Hope.

The orphanage held up to one hundred twenty children, with two separate farms for the boys and girls, a schoolhouse (which included a chapel), and a small printing press. Although the Reverend must have been a religious man, rumors surrounding the orphanage suggested that the children there were being subjected to a hell beyond belief. In fact, a few even waded through the deep Vermilion River in effort to escape. Tales were told of bedrooms filled with rats and other vermin, large welts that developed on oneâ??s skin after being beaten, and a diet consisting of animal innards, and diseased meat and corn. The inmates received hardly any schooling, and any illness was treated only by prayer.

However, further research has concluded that the eventual burning of the Gore orphanage is simply a legend created by the accidental entwining of another morbid occasion into the story. In 1908, an elementary school in the town of Collinwood had mysteriously caught fire, killing well over a hundred children. Some were burned or trampled to death, while others were trapped by the walls and flames. Still others tried to escape, but found the back door locked. When rescuers tried to open it, they found it was the kind of door that swings inside, and therefore wouldnâ??t budge because of the desperate crowd pressing against it. The blaze spread quickly, drawing screams and shrieks from the trapped children. Although the heartbroken town investigated, the cause of the fire was never found. The legend states that a little boy dropped an oil lamp outside, but many people suspected it was started by the schoolâ??s own janitor, a German-American named Herter.

The Light and Hope orphanage finally closed down in 1916 due to ongoing financial problems. It might have been closed down sooner, after an investigation was conducted in 1909, but the state of Ohio had no formal laws concerning the operation and conditions of such institutions. Strangely enough, this happened exactly 13 years after the orphanage first opened. The children were then dispersed among relatives and guardians throughout the town, with the exception of those who had nowhere to go. Now widowed, Mrs. Sprunger took them with her back to Indiana, where she eventually died in 1953.

The areas around the ruins of both the school and the orphanage are said to be very haunted. There are often reports of shrill screaming, balls of light, visions of fire, and strange apparitions. Visitors who have taken pictures of the nearby forest and bridge are surprised to find that, after developing the film, mysterious white smudges and smoke wisps have shown up in the photo. There have even been some ghost sightings, including the discovery of a little ragged boy named Jacob. But perhaps the most disturbing of all are the small, dusty fingerprints found all over many a visitorâ??s possessionsâ?¦

After doing some research, I got directions on how to find the ruins. There are only a few stone posts remaining and it is on private property, so beware! The woods surrounding the area are erie and we tried to communicate with the spirits there but all we heard were the trees creaking. After a little more research, I found out that there was a mansion there at one time, and it was eventually used to house some “wayward” children, but there was no fire, and it wasn’t an orphenage. This is just one of those urban myths.

Here is a link from Cleveland.com telling about the story. I’m from Cleveland’s west-side which is where this story takes place and have heard about it all my life. My mom grew up in this area and I have relatives who currently live there. My crew and I will hopefully be investigating it soon.

I live maybe 20 minutes from Gore Orphanage and, of course have been there many times as all of my siblings have been too.I can say that while I have not ever heard nor seen any strange things at the site every time me or any of my siblings have gone and mind you I am from a family of 9 something has happened to us.We have had car accidents, flat tires, run ins with the police, chased by dogs on many seperate occasions, and as strange as this sounds a black cat kept jumping into our car when we were stopped.I can not say for certain if this is a haunted site but it is quite strange how everytime someone in my family goes to the site unexplainable things happen.

Last weekend me and my fellow spirt hunters made the trip to gore from Medina. As we drove down the street a Black CAT ran right out in front of us. I honestly had a erie feeling about dark road and woods. We walked around in the wood but never found the site. We got back to the car and the battery was dead.Mind you nothing had been left on.

ive been there on multiple occasions… no joke, no humor at all. if you stay very quiet in the middle of the open field you can see orbs and hear creaking doors. they sound as if you are in a vacant building as the creaking echos. i thought my mind was playing tricks on me when i watched an almost transparent child run and dive towards the woods, but the three people i was with saw the same thing and we decided to bail as quick as possible. some rednecks gave us **** for being there because its private property, but it hasnt stopped us yet. i dont know if the stories are true, but i know that area is haunted.

Last year i went to gore orpanage with a few friends not knowing what to expect. We went at about 11:00 at night and as we went over the bridge to get there we saw white lights in front of us untill we reached the piller. None of us thought to bring flashlights due to the fact we thought it was a myth…all we had were the cell phone lights. As we got out of the car, a black cat was coming out of the woods and we didnt think much of it till i now look at this site! We never actually found the foundation of the ruins because of the lack of light but we did hear and see interesting things, things that make you believe that something unusual was going on there. We stuck together as a group and heard laughing of what seemed to be children then we would lightly hear steps of someone else as we would stand still. As we left the site and headed back to the car, we heard light crys and screams as if they were suffering severly…the worst when we went back to the car it was parked on the otherside of the road!!
Ive never been back to gore since last year, even though i didnt see the actual thing i get a pretty good idea of the eerie feeling and happenings going on around there!

I live probably 10-15 minutes roughly from the Gore Orphanage. In fact, my school news has done documentaries on it. People tend to really screw the story up, so here’s what everyone in Lorain Country actually hears:

Gore Orphanage started out as an actual mansion years and years ago. And when I say that, I mean very early 1900’s or late 1800’s. It housed the Wayward’s, and they had actually had two children that mysteriously died without any reasoning. Along with Mr. Wayward’s wife who later died some few years after, mysteriously. I believe somewhere between that time they were able to have one child who lived long enough to have a family of his own. And some many years later it is said an orphanage was built, and then you get the story that was just discussed here.

Gore Orphanage actually ISN’T where most people think it is. Most people actually go to the cemetery down the road from it thinking it’s Gore. But it’s not. The actual Gore Orphanage resides over the bridge, and there’s not much left but a few stone pillars, and pieces of the floor. Whether it was actually an Orphanage or not is still strongly debated. But it was, indeed, a mansion at one time. It IS documented that the Wayward’s lived there, and their children & and his wife did die with no evident cause. So whether you want to believe there’s something strange going on with the ‘Orphanage’, or not, there’s no doubt unexplainable events occur there.

We have a music box sound on a tape recorder and some low screaming. We set the tape recorder on the pillar and walked away then it would turn off and on by itself..no joke all this really happened!9 of us ditched out and waited in the car…when we got back to the house there was a little kids hand print on the back window!you must go and see for yourself!!!!

Iv been to gore many many times and when you get there there is pillers and all that stuff but if you walk up the road till u get to the top where the road is trashed and if u look down at the vally you can see spirits Or “Ghost” Playing and u can see the guys house who burnt down gore. while we were leaving are car wouldnt start for several mins and when we got it to start on the bridge it shut off again. then while we were going up the hill right befor were about to leave it shuts off again and the breaks stop working and the e-break stops work so we all had to jump out of the car and stop it.

I live in the next town over from gore, these are the facts:the location of the orphanage has no remains and when it burnt nobody died, the remains in the woods are from the swift house where the swift families 4 children ages 2-11 died in a seven day span.,those are the cries you hear.

I was at the site back in the fall of 2005. Nothing strange happened. However, it is NOT on private property. In fact, it is now owned by the Metroparks, so you won’t be trespassing if you go there during daylight hours. You’ll see a sign for the park along side the road, and a small dirt trail heads to the foundation. The foundation is not that of the orphanage. The orphanage itself was on the other side of the road. The foundation that is there is of the Swift Mansion. Look it up on http://www.forgottenoh.com

Actually, i have drove down the road the orphanage was once on, not only if you stand in the ruins, will you hear the screams, but, you will possibly see a women and a young girl walking around behind all the tree’s. And if you drive up that road really slow at night, you will actually feel your car being PUSHED, as you will speed up without even having your foot on the pedle.

Kevin says:

February 21, 2007, 2:54 pm

actually the story posted up there is completely wrong. go to http://www.forgottenoh.com for the real story. but what is true is that myself and three other friends ventured out there one night to have a memorable experience. we didnt see anything but we all heard definate, clear as day, screams. after exiting our car we proceded into the woods and to the foundation, and again we did not see anything but heard the same scream only louder. while entering the valley and the area that gore is in, you constantly feel watched. the foundation is one of the scariest places i have ever been in my life.

I just took my 4 children driving by the orphanage last night. It was spooky. We had minivan problems as we passed by the sight. The strangest thing was that a car came from nowhere and passed us up. It then turned around in an unknown driveway and came right at us. As it passed us it disappeared all of the sudden.
Some locals say that if you have children with you that you are less likely to be haunted. The lost souls of the children that cry in the night like when children visit.
My children are still a little scared about the whole thing. So am I.

supposivly when your leaving, over the bride your car will get pounded by tiny hands of the children that died.

That didnt happen to us. Theres some stones… graffiti, beer cans… a fire pit and crazy rednecks that will chase you and make scary fun noises to make you feel important. My house is haunted, not those woods.

I am from Grafton, OH which is very near the ruins of Gore Orphanage. I have heard this story my whole life and have always been curious about it, but I wanted to do some research on it before i actually went there in the middle of the night. So I looked up old newspaper articles on the Gore Orphanage fire, and it turns out that no children died in the fire, so basically this story is completely untrue and just folklore.

Ashley says:

July 5, 2007, 9:32 am

Oh and by the way it’s Lorain County not Loraine County. Thanks for being accurate though.

brooke says:

July 9, 2007, 6:14 pm

The house that now lies in ruins was a former mansion built between 1840 and 1842 by Johnathan Swift, a wealthy Massachusetts farmer. It was an upper-tier house, quite exquisite for its time and location. However, Swift invested his earnings and life savings into worthless railroad stock, and was forced to sell the house to New Yorker Nicholas Wilber, the leader of a group of Spiritualists. Oral history is quite unanimous about his hosting elaborate seances at the mansion. Soon after occupying the house, four of the Wilber children died over the course of seven days at the height of a local diphtheria epidemic, and the seances were usually incantations which featured the spirit-tapping of young children.

This is where legend begins to diverge from fact. While many local citizens insist that the children were buried in Swift Mansion, supposedly explaining its supernatural activity, they were actually buried in a local graveyard. Further, exaggerations grew that all four children “died in their mother’s arms” and that she subsequently “went insane, setting the tables in the places for the dead children and beckoning them to go to bed.”

Nicholas Wilber died in 1901 and the house sat vacant. Soon after, people from around the area began sneaking into the house to examine it, vandalize it, and render it an urban legend. Later, “children would be challenged to sleep in the house without being haunted by ‘the children’.” The house began to slip into disrepair soon after the public fascination and abuse began, and was slowly torn apart. It wasn’t until 1923, when efforts to restore the manor were beginning, that the house was vandalized and set ablaze. The culprit was never found. Since then, it has been continually vandalized and remains a popular hang-out for teenagers.

The name Gore comes from the name of the geographical shape of the area, a valley called a gore.

*On a side note, it would be really nice if when insisting a story is true, you would take the few hours to research the story. By research I do not mean going to some internet spook hunter web site full of crazy people that tell untruths and show pictures of dust calling them “orbs” and proclaiming truth of the “haunt” I mean go to the library, look up actual history. Then come here and tell the story about the man with bad investment choices the family that took over the home and their 4 children whom died during the diptheria epidemic.

I went there about 3 years ago and it wasn’t all that scary. Yes, it was on Private property and do take caution, but honestly, there was no strange feeling about it. (I am one of those people who freak out even watching a scary movie, so if I can go there in the dark and not feel scared, it is not that scary!)

So 6 of my friends and I drove out to gore orphange. We took a road that had no outlet off of gore rd. It led us over a bridge and around the the woods thatwas on our left and on the right it was an open field. We reached a point infront of us that was blocked off and a dirt rd. on the right. we turned around and parked. My sister and i stayed in the car incase something bad happened. Everyone came running back 10 mins later. only four got back in the car and a truck came from inside the woods and ran us of the road. The man got out with a flash light and tried scarying us. he soon left and my friends caught up w/ us and we got the heck out of there. They said nothing scary happened while in the woods. So we might have been in the wrong place but the guy was crazy.

Okay so I have never actually been there before until tody but I have tried finding it on many occasions. But I sort of stumbled upon it today in a weird way. Gore orphanage is located on ‘Speary” road, im not sure if thats how you spell it. But it’s right of of Mason if you take route two/90. But anyways I know that this might sound weird but I swear it really happened this way. The night before I had a dream that I was trying to chase something. When I first woke up I thought it was ghosts but now I cant remember if they were just lights. But anways in my dream there was this huge house that had a gravel driveway and whatever I was chasing would always run there but when I would try to walk on the drive way something would throw me backwards. Now later today me and my mom got in a fight and my and my boyfriend went for a drive. I live in Elyria so its not far but my grandpa used to live on wakeman road so we went right passed the road to get to gore orphanage. My boyfriend is an electrician and he worked on a huge mansion at the end of speary road and he wanted me to look at it so we went down there. Thats when I saw the road off to the right and I noticed it was wooded and winding so I decided to drive down it. At the bottom of the hill right before you go back up again you’ll notice a road that runs alongside the hill and signs that say its a park. So I thought okay lets drive it, try and find the park since I never knew it was there. We came to the bridge and kept going. We actually passed the orphanage and kept going until we saw the road dead ended but I noticed a gate to the right and a gravel drive way so I turned on it. But before we got there, there was a few signs that said things like no drugs permitted on park but the last sign we saw said no trespassing and I didnt think anything of it so I kept going. As I was driving really slow on the gravel, because I was worried we really might get in trouble, 2 huge husky mixed dogs ran out from no where. Now there is a small house like thing back there which I later found belongs to a ‘park ranger’. But when I saw the dogs I stopped and then they stopped. They were seriousy like 30 or 40 feet away. I know not that close. but I freaked out because I know redneck hill billys and that they wont hesitate to shoot at you for trespassings so I threw my car in reverse and tried to back down the driveway, which as a small sharp turn snd with a car my size you have to run off the road to back up and turn around. And I did this very fast I didnt hesitate at all and I saw my boyfriend roll his window up and he told me to roll mine up to. finally when I stopped and changed gears I looked to my left and only saw one dog which was now about 10 ft from my car and right about the height to walk over and stick his face all in my car. I didnt see the other dog though but i rolled up my window and floored it. But then I saw the other dog standing about 15 ft from my car. I got really scared as I have had a bad accident with a dog when I was about 12. So I inched towards it hoping it would move. But instead it walked right towards me and put its two front paws on the hood of my car and started snarling and barking at us. Then the other dog was walking along the drivers side of my car but further in the woods. I started honking my horn and then the dogs ran away. I drove a little and the pulled to the side of the road, this was before we crossed back over the bridge. Me and my boyfriend were looking in the woods to see if the dogs were still out there. Now I remind I didnt know that gore orphanage was right there I was just freaked out because I have seen the movie house of 1000 corpses and I didnt not want some cray **** like that to happen to me. As we were sitting there my boyfriend saw some sort of a flashing light. Sort of like the way the sun hits the face of a watch and shines right in your face. I looked at him and I saw the light on his nose so I looked over but I didnt see it. Now he is really fricken curious and wanted to get out of the car and check it out. I followed but I stayed a bit back. Thats when we stumbled on to gore orphanage. It was really wierd seeing as how my dad grew up in birmingham and Ive heard every version of the stories, I just never thought it was really there. There is a pillar that is standing up and one that is knocked down. But theres some wierd writing on it thats not english. I didnt hear any wierd noises or screams. Just typical stuff. But I did notice, there are no birds. you wont see em and you wont hear em, just crickets. it was weird. So when I got home I asked my dad about everything and this is what he told me. There was an orphanage, and it did burn down, but many years after it had been abanoned. The place is called ‘ Swifts Hollow’ after a rich man built his huge mansion back there and everyone thought it was soo cool. But after years swifts daughter and son died. He didnt say if they died in the mansion or not but he said they are all four buried in a cemetary up the road, by four I mean mr and mrs swift and the two children. But he eventualy sold the house to Nicholas Wilbur who was said to have held seances at the house and to be a very ‘spiritual person’.After several years the wilburs lost four grand children to diphtheria. They all died within 6 days of eachother and they all died in the house, soon after as did the mrs and mr. So right now I have 4 dead children for sure and 2 dead adults. Anyways as he goes on, in 1903 the Sprungers, from Indiana, a reverand and his wife bought most of swifts hollow to make an orphanage, they lost there only children back in indiana and was said to have had an orphanage in indiana that did burn down killing 6 girls, but that wasnt here. The children never stayed in the mansion, it remained abandoned due to the fact that everyone died in it at young ages, such as 11,9,2,9,24,2,37,and 35. Instead they lived in farm houses from the land he bought surrounding the mansion. It was actually called ‘light and hope orphanage’ but it was shut down in 1916. My dad says that everyone says because of fincialy problems but he said his mom told him it was because the kids that lived there were beaten with whips, they were poorly fed, they would eat the heads from animals from the slaughter shops. They would work on farms nearby. There was trial were children who left or ran away came infront of a judge and told them of the abuse. I mean you should hear some of the stories of what happened to these kids. But after being abandoned the orphanage homes burnt down and shortly after the swift mansion. My dad said he is sure that other kids must have died there due to abuse, neglect, and mal nourishment and my grandmother said you really do hear children down there asking for your help. But none were burnt alive, but many did die there. You can find ruins from the orphanage and the mansion. Dorms and such can be seen in areas before, and after the bridge along with the ruins of Swift mansion. Also a well. May I remind you that the road was once called gore road due to the shape of the hem of a ladys skirt and because some parts of the area seemed to fit the idea. many years later the orphanage was added to the end. My grandma also said she heard that since the wilburs moved in to the mansion an evil presence was felt and there were many gatherings. But heres the tricky thing. She said that the grave stones for the children dont have bodies underneath them. Parts of the house was pulled up and they were buried in unmarked spots beneath the home. But after my dad and my grandma told me all of this I was sitting in my room on the floor telling my boyfriend when my tv turned on and skipped through about four channels. but my remote control was sitting ontop of my desk right behind. When I picked it up, the power button wouldnt work so I turned it off from the front!!! but were going back tomorrow night, ill let you know if anything happens.

I have been there a few times. I live about 25 minutes away. My son and three of his friends went there about 3 years ago, my son and I were the only ones that would get out of the car. We went deep into the woods with no kind of light. As we were walkiking we would hear faint whispering so we would stop and it would turn to giggling in the tree tops, there was no wind. We did see the piller and did touch it, it was very warm on a very cold night.
We were speaking to the energy there telling them we were not there to disrespect but there to see for ourselves what the situation was. The whispering continued as did the laughter in the tree tops. We left slowly and carfully. I think some people are able to pick up on things that are of the other side, as my son and I are. We finally got back to our car where two of the 17 year old boys were in tears, they didn’t want to talk about it. The night before one of them was at the site and decided not to be respectful and while driving away his car stopped on the bridge and he was stuck for about 15 minutes. What ever happened was due to his big mouth. Anyways, the truth is the truth and this is what happened to us. We will be going again, perhapes this week.

I’m from Mansfield OH its about an hour and a half south of Gore Orphanage. Last fall about 7 or 8 of us were looking for places to go ghost hunting. We stumbled upon Gore Orphanage online and decided to check it out you can find it on map quest fairly easy. When we got there it was really creepy I don’t know if it was because its haunted or just because it was a blustery fall night. Anyway we took flash lights and digital cameras and started exploring we walked around for abuot an hour before we actually found any ruins which we stumbled upon as we were leaving. When we looked at our cameras there were lots of orbs but no shapes or anything else out of the ordinary other than that my friend said she heard children crying but I didn’t hear anything. It was definitely a fun night and a good scare for anyone who dares…..

There’s a big hole in the ground with some big bricks around it. The bridge is more haunted then the site. Becare tho, there is a park ranger that lives down there and after dark he will call the police on you

There are remains of the old orphanage. It was ran by a loving couple. The ruins are on park property, not on private. I run a ghost hunting team and we have investigated there, and we are going in October for a night tour. Children did die, but not how people think they did. All children died young back in that time, so did adults. Please, if you go out there, DO NOT desicrate the ruins anymore than what they have been! Teens and legend trippers leave their broken beer bottles and trash all over the ruins. Also, if you don’t know exactly where to look, you will never find where the ruins are.

Ghost OPS says:

July 30, 2008, 11:35 pm

We never found any ‘haunting’ evidence. We live to debunk. The ‘fire’ and ‘doors shutting’ are twigs being broke by wildlife and other people walking in the woods, and the screams and cries are from birds native to the area.

My husband and I have been there so many times, and like 1 person said that is the old Swift Mansion. Swifts children died there from disiase, they are not buried on the property. Also, Swift went bankrupt or something like that and then it was bought by Rev. and Mrs. Sprunger, they opened it as an orphanage and when the Rev. died it was closed down and in like 1903 or so(I dont remember exact date) burned to the ground with no one inside. Another thing if u take 113W to Gore Orphanage Rd you cannot get to the ruins from there because the road is blocked and driving wise doesnt connect to the other side of the road. You should have to take Sperry Rd to Gore Orphanage Rd and take a sharp right. U can also take Deans RD to get to Sperry. If anyone knows more about it and why the road does not go all the way thru like it used to. I wonder if the park Ranger is protecting the actual ruins and if u think about the big whole in the ground, look at the huge tree that is “sitting in the foundation” of the house.

i live about thirty minutes from “gore orphanage” and when i was about fourteen, three friends and i decided one night to go out there just for kicks. (it is private property and there is a park ranger living near by) we did the whole bridge thing but nothing happened so we walked to the ruins of the mansion, it was very creepy but nothing happened there either. so we walked back to the car and drove to where the road is blocked off, got out and started to walk down the road. as we were walking a white light started coming towards us. we thought it was just another person with a flashlight until the light came closer. there was nothing causing this white light so we turned and started running. the boys ran faster than us girls, so my friend and i were pretty far behind. i looked over to my friend just in time to see the light hit my friend in the back and disappear. she had the wind completely knocked out of her and had trouble breathing for at least 30 minutes. we left that place and i haven’t gone back since.

I have lived in Vermilion most of my life(now in Elyria).I have been to Gore Orphanage Rd. too many times too count. In my teen years we would go there to party.Lots of drinking and such going on.The story told by brooke at this site is the most acurate.there was a Swift family that started the mansion. It was sold to another family when swift went broke. There was Acouple by the name of Springer that started an orphanage. Ahouse burnt down(no children died from this fire). While it is a very creepy place down Gore Orphage Rd. I dont know about being haunted. I believe very srongly in spirits and hauntings but i think most of what happens there is the imagination.Power of suggestion is an amazing thing. I am amazed at all the different versions of the stories of Gore Orpanage Rd.

My buddies and I found the place back in 1996. According to where we thought it was by reading up at the library we had to stop the car on a road b/c it was closed and half the road some ways down was totally gone and it fell down the hillside going to the Vermillion river. Anways we were down in the woods and the one thing ALL 6 of us heard was the sound of metal ‘pinging’ ONE DISTINCT TIME. We ALL did get a cold chill in one spot and heard something running towards us but we suspect it as a wild animal but we all had 6 flashlights on it to no avail as we could still not see it. So cold chills AND the sound of metal ‘pinging’ was felt by ALL 6 of us there. Never went back.

We stopped by the sight about two years ago. We got a map off the internet, drove a few miles away from it, and then mountain biked to it, as to not arouse any attention by the people and the park ranger that lives near it. The area is all overgrown and there is a guard rail blocking the path and a few “no trespassing signs here and there. Supposedly it’s owned by the parks. We biked and hiked for awhile and almost passed it up when one of us spotted a few foundation bricks with graffiti on it. We explored a bit more and found what could have been a well at one time. We tried to communicate with any spirit that may have been there but heard nothing. It started to get dark and we headed back when these crows started cawing and it freaked us out. We double-timed it out of there when we saw an old lady who began to yell at us. We just laughed and kept going when she turned us into newts! We got better though!

Light of Hope Orphanage was the orphanage on the road, it opened in 1902 and children were not caught in a fire. I think this story gets confused with the Collinwood fire of 1908 where 175 people (172 children, and three adults) died in the fire.
To get the truth about Gore Orphanage Go to this Web-site http://www.forgottenoh.com/gore.html

Just was there today been going there for 20 some odd years since I waa 16 years old . . . back then it was our partying spot we use to take a keg out there to see how many of could get drunk & get lost but did any of us venture to the the actual site . . . NO! As I grew older and more into the freakier side was I part of the october scarefest and rituals wellll I watched . . . it brought people from everywhere people claiming they had all sorts of powers who knows what kind of things could happen you know all forces are there you have earth water sky and fire it does have the most perfect clearing and moon can be very deceiving out there at night. Every time I go out there the mansion is set up in a new formation a new pentagram of some sort new graffiti on the original entry way (and yes I did engrave my name once ~ along time ago, but you can still see clear as day) All I can say it does have a strange feeling to it. . . and it does drive you back . . . has anything really stranged ever happened to me once really did lose someone out there until morning . . . and the last few times I always run into somebody going out there but when I leave there not there anymore they’re just gone . . . I don’t question it . . like today some man was chopping wood on the other side of the bridge my grandmother and great aunt were baptisted in that river right there in that river in that spot where that bridge was built, my daughter was with my today and we did our usual walk to the sight looked how people have set up the monument now took pictures went back to the car went to drive out and the man was gone chopped wood was there his truck was there no man strange he was even cutting wood considering it does belong to the county now and they do make random checks down there but once again I don’t question it anymore. It’s just gore and it’s our strange lil place and always has been and always will be . . . has been for generations and generations to come . . . .

I lived 10 minutes from Gore. It was known more as a place to party by us locals. My friend lived on Gore Orphanage Rd. right by the site. The only “strange” occurences I witnessed were the 2 car accidents I got into on the road, which were due to me being a hot-rodding teenager, not because of some supernatural force! The site itself is unremarkable and the “screams” people claim to hear are actually the sound of traffic going over the turnpike bridge, which is not far from the site. It’s nothing more than an urban legend, albeit a fun one that I grew up with.

Randy W. says:

I was just at site of the “Gore Orphanage” today (5/6/09) and got the low-down from locals and park rangers. According to one ranger, the Swift Mansion was not the same as the orphanage. The site of the orphanage is half mile from where the mansion stood. The orphanage closed due to lack of money to run it. Some years later, a vagrant took up shelter in the abandoned building and accidentally burned it down when he built a fire to stay warm. Sadly, no children were killed in a terrible fire and so the only tortured screams you will hear while visiting the area is from your freaked-out friends when you play a cool…or ummm…cruel joke on them. And as far as a crazy guy who shoots at people…that’s just a slight exaggeration. In reality world, the man who lives in the house where the orphanage once stood was described to me by a ranger as “grumpy.” One night while trying to evict intruders who were partying and causing a disturbance, the man was hit in the head by a flying beer bottle that some a-hole threw at him. I’d be a little grumpy too.

The area is worth a visit for its natural beauty but don’t expect any kind of paranormal experience. Randy W.

I was raised on south street 2 blocks from south street elementary school. I grad. from Vermilion high and have been to Gore Orphanage quite a few times. you will have to do some digging but here is what I found out yes there was a mansion and an orphanage at two separate times. the four children who died of dyptheria are not berried on site there are berried at maple grove cemetery (go down rt 60 just b4 smokin joes turn right) you can see the cemetery as soon as you turn its on the right side of the road. *back at gore* the orphanage that was there did burn down (I was told by an older boy who was picked on for not being adopted he was 12) children did die but not that many.when I went as a teen I herd nothing but saw blurbs “children running through the woods”? smell of burning wood never flesh I now have to drive down gore orphanage rd to take my son to soccer. I hear children laughing now and see nothing Jordan Im not sure the movie had anything to do with gore.

The Light and Hope Orphanage went bankrupt so the children were reocated and the property sold and the Swift Mansion built on it. I live in the neighborhood and this site sums it up pretty good. It was 2 stories blended together.
I have been here many times. It now is open to the public during day hours. Yes, I have been there at night! It is a very spooky place. You can see where the mansion was by the foundation. There are pillars at the beginning of the drive where a gate must have been. There are photos of the mansion. Do a google search on Swift Mansion.
Last year around Halloween I took my kids on our annual Halloween walk through Gore Orphanage. We live close enough so we don’t need to drive. We can walk. Being that you are not suppose to be in the park after dark, we feel this to be our advantage of trespassing. Last year was spooky. The naming of gore comes from how the land is laid out. It down in a galley carved from the vermilion river. The wind can get to blowing down through the gore pretty steady. Once that happens the trees start squeaking. It does sound very much like screaming kids. You know where the noise is coming from but the sound is so real!!!! Really, like screaming children. I have never heard slamming doors or the black cat. There are many strays in the area or farms that have cats in the area that roam around. Cats are kinda strange. In my opinion.
If you want a good scare and the wind is right, you will definitely get a fright.

I’m originally from that area, and I found through researching the local papers that the Orphanage was at a different site, did burn down, but with no fatalities. However, strange things do occur there, and the surrounding countryside; we used to camp on the Vermillion River, and experienced paranormal activity there, at the bridge, the foundation site, and along the nearby roads. Speaking of which, has anyone seen a large black old-style car that follows people’s cars down there? Some friends and I were chased by it back in ’79.

I remember making the long trek across a large corn field on a moonlight
night. The field laid just beyond the guard rails of the old closed road
that was basically falling off a cliff. I remember approaching the rather
ominous large dark woods that lay beyond the corn field. Loud crackeling
and the sound of flames could be heard emanating from the woods. If that
were not creepy enough. Me being a stupid teen, we had to enter the woods to investigate. What we found was a waterfall, The water was falling and
pounding the rocks at the bottom creating the fire sound. Not really supernatural, but it was alot of fun! Fond teenage memories.co

Hello. I’m from the Vermilion area and I’ve had some occurances at Gore Orphanage over the past year or so. My friend and I often go to Gore Orphanage just to drive around. We decided that we were gonna get out and try to find the foundation. Gore Orphanage is pretty much a legend we’ve been told most of our lives. I do know the history of the area and my family has been in the area since before the orphanage was built. No children were burned in the fire at the orphanage. That is a myth however I’ve heard many rumors that the father in the mansion before the orphanage had children pass away and buried three of them.(although the real graves are at Maple Grove Cem just down the road)I don’t know if thats true but I definitely think those kids would be the spirits that would be seen. Anyways we found the old foundation and walked around a bit… there was like 5 inches of snow at the time… but we saw alot of it including the pillars and noticed the amazing bit of structure left at the site. We went back to the house and did a little bit of exploring on the web.finding forgottenohio’s site especially interesting. Later that day… we went back down to the site and got out and walked around a bit more about sunset. We stayed for about 20 minutes walking around. When we went back to the car we did some quick looking around the car for “little handprints” alot of people claim to see… I looked at the rear passenger-side window and noticed a very defined backwards R, When we opened the door we also saw the letters I C H A not really drawn on the glass but it looked like drips of water running down the glass that had been manipulated into the letters. Of course being two teenage girls we tripped out and took off. We sat down and thought about what we had read and remembered the “Richard” that someone saw written on their window. We showed her parents and eveyone agreed that they saw it too. No one had been in the backseat for months. And definitely noone named Richard. Touching the letters, they seemed sticky, like lip gloss or something. I’ve been there at night and have gotten pictures with possible “orbs” in them but haven’t had them looked at. Other than that I’ve never experience anything down there.. no smoke.. no little kids… One thing I have seen many times is like the field being totally full of animals. The first time I went down there, there was a massive group of vultures in the field. Another time there were like fifty deer. It was definitely creepy but it is the country so not really “paranormal”. As for the ranger… I’ve only encountered one person down there. And i don’t believe it was the retired ranger who resides next to the site. I’ve never been bothered by him at all. Whether I was there for 5 minutes or 3 hours. I’ve never seen any “cults” or evidence of anyone really down there (besides occasional beer cans). I’ve been down there hundreds of times at midnight, 3 am, halloween, and the night before, friday the 13th, and numerous random times when “cults” are said to be there….. and I’ve never seen anything.

As for how to get there: From 113, just west of Miller’s Ice Cream, turn down Dean rd. and cross the bridge(also supposedly haunted). Follow til road ends and turn right onto Sperry Rd. Follow til you get to the bottom of a big hill with a field on the right and you see a road. Turn onto the road and go over the little bridge. The site IS NOT past the road block. Follow the road til the big field on the right turns into woods. Its a big square of woods and you can see the front pillar from the road.

i have been to gore orphanage many different times and something weird has always happened. the fact is is that there are two bridges on your way there. you have to go over a big eerie old looking bridge to get to the real one. everyone thinks that the first one is it, but they’re wrong. there’s alot more to it. as soon as you get anywhere near the bridge you start to feel the negative energy. it’s insane. like the last time i went a few weeeks ago, i couldn’t breathe. just beware because there are alot of people that try to keep you out of there. i have had personal expiriences. the last time i went there someone had cut up the asphalt at the first bridge, and my car had a hard time. i have a friend, jordan, who drove through there one night and a car full of men with masks and guns chased his car down for no reason. just be as careful as you can! i’m serious. bad things happen down there, no joke.

The rumors of the orphanage burning down and all the children dying are untrue, there were many deaths there, but they were natural causes and some murders/suicides. Me and my friends have seen ghosts, and orbs and have pictures. We hear heavy breathing, big sticks breaking, see weird lights floating around us, and have small hand/foot prints all over our car. I have pictures to prove it. The first family to live there was the Swift family, four children died within 4 days (unknown cause.) The second family was the Wilbur family, one child was reported dead (natural cause.) There was an orphanage, there was abuse involved, it did eventually burn down, but only one child didn’t survive, but all the others did. I have visited this place multiple times over the years, and I have never heard children screaming or heard crackling from the building burning. There is definitely some creepy stuff that happens there.

My friends and I drove from Huron to Gore orphanage back in 1986 when we were teens. We arrived there in late afternoon. As soon as we were out of the car we were chased by 3 dobermans and all of us had to get up a tree to avoid being bit. After about 30 mins they went away. Later as we climbed the road to the top of the hill we got dive bombed by a red tailed hawk. That made a beliver of me, that place def has something going on.

There is so much wrong here it’s astonishing in a site called “real haunts.” There was nothing “mysterious” about the blaze at Collinwood; wooden joists caught fire. The door did NOT open inward, that was debunked almost immediately after the fire; and the janitor, who lost 3 of his own, was exonerated nearly as quickly. As a former journalist, I find this kind of reckless reporting depressing. If you got this much wrong about Collinwood, what else did you get wrong? Shame on you. The victims of Collionwood, nearly all of whom died because they panicked and got caught in a wedge of bodies, deserve the truth at the very least. Check the state archives.

True, the deaths at Gore Orphanage were not real; however, the area is noted for paranormal occurrences. I can personally attest to this.

There are two sides of Gore-Orphanage road. If you go down the wrong one, you won’t find the orphange. You have to go down 60 to Sperry road. Then turn right onto Gore Orphanage. Last time I was there, it was owned by the Metro parks and they were giving warnings to everyone that trespassed after dark.
