Ruthmear Mansion
This mansion is plagued by many phantoms throughout the year, but especially on Halloween night. On Halloween, alarms sound and lights go on and off, though the house is empty. Objects may also be seen flying through the rooms, and there have even been reports of gun shots in the house.

I am sorry, but the Ruthmere Mansion is not haunted. Some places are, granted, but this definitely is not. A close friend of mine has a grandmother who used to date a guy that lived there, and there were no reports of hauntings then. I believe that people supposedly see the strange phenomenon only when driving by or staring at this place. Perhaps they see lights flicker on and off because it can be rented out, and gets decorated for Halloween. It’s nice to see Elkhart on the map for something but if only it were true.

My uncle Ed Beardsley’s family on the other side owned and built this house. when i was a child we were in it all the time. they moved away to arizona several years ago and i can tell you personally that not one scary thing had ever happened to me or anyone else in the family in all the years i spent visiting there.

Actually Jena is correct. The Ruthmere mansion was orginally the Beardsley mansion , which is Ed Beardsley’s great grand father. Check across the street and you’ll see a statue.

If this place is haunted all the time then why are you saying that you can really see things on Halloween. I f it haunted then you will see things during the day and all year round. It sounds like people are just trying to outsiders to come and visit. Don’t make up things just tell the truth.

I’ve lived in elkhart all my life and never heard about it being haunted even at halloween. There are tons of old houses around here that are haunted but that is not one of them.. There is a tower at high dive park that I heard was haunted because someone fell of the sprial stair case a long time ago, about 7 yrs ago city boarded it up, just wondering if anybody has heard about that.

I have also lived in Elkhart all of my life, and although it is tempting to believe Ruthmere is haunted, I have heard over and over that it is not.I would like to hear of other places in Elkhart that are or thought to be haunted!

Jen, I have lived in Elkhart for 20 plus years and i have also heard the stories of High Dive Park Tower being haunted. Something about someone jumped or was pushed. Sorry it’s been a really long time ago but i remember when it was not boarded and you could go up in the tower then the city boarded it and now no one is allowed to go up there anymore.
As for Ruthmere Mansion, I used to live right behind Ruthmere and there were odd things and noises but I cant say that in all the years i lived behind the mansion that i ever experienced anything personally. Who knows but the Ghosts?! lol

Jen or Jena,
It is very important that you remove this ridiculous rumor from your site immediately. This impacts Ruthmere’s ability to deliver its educational mission. If it is not removed by 5 pm on Monday, it will be necessary for our organization to take steps.
Thank you,
Ruthmere management

Sorry Jen or Jena,
I mistakenly addressed my comments to you. I agree with and appreciate your support of the fact that Ruthmere is haunted. It is not.
My comments were adressed to the webmaster of this site, or to whomever posted the initial assertion that Ruthmere is haunted. This is false and must be removed immediately.
Thank you,
Ruthmere management

“One Who Knows”, you are incorrect. The statue of Dr. Havilah Beardsley stands at the corner of Beardsley and Riverside, nearly two blocks from Ruthmere. Though you are correct, the house was built by the Beardsley family, specifically A.R. Beardsley, who is coincidentally the one who had the statue of Dr. Beardsley erected.

To Whom it may concern:
If this place is or is not haunted it is probably not up to us. But rather than fight among yourselves some people can see, hear, feel things that most can not. Simple because you are more sensitive to that frequency, that paranormal edge and it might be that people who do not see is because they choose not to or they are a negitive ward to them.
Sincerely,
Hallows

i know of two houses that are haunted and i am far form the only one who is aware of this.for one my house has been haunted since the very first time i steped into it ( a young girl had died inside of it at one time) i mentioned it to an older lady when i was a kid (only 5) and she flipped out on me- but there would have been no way i coulda known what to tell her unless i actualy did see her. secondly, the big blue house on high street is very much so haunted, try goin upstairs at night and turn the lights off, and have a seat- cause whatever happened upstairs was more than just visciously brutal, and i really dont get into the whole paranormal thing, muchless afraid of the dark, there was a boy and a girl upstairs and in a room that had a toybox- looked like a play room more than a bedroom, the little boy was forcibly picked up at the top of the stairs, enough to rip the wooden knob from the screw that held it to the banister and thrown down the stairs hitting his head on the overhang bouncing back onto the stairs and rolling down rest of the stairs to the sitting room (or would say sitting room), the girl was in the playroom and i could seriously hear a jack n the box being played so it’d open.. im not sure about whatever it was that happened in the bathroom but if you know what the odor blood puts off while its drying, youll know it.. as far as the Ruthmere mansion, i used to know a girl who actulay did live there but we didnt get along to well for the most part. but im sorry the house is much much older than a few decades old, and yes there is a history behind the (gunshots and ocassional footsteps) or a CERTIAN GIRL in 1977 wouldnt have been hiding in the closet with a little boy and a lit candle back then…. but regretfuly he was killed on his 5th birthday (october 31) of 1977 not much further away from there…..
…and now for somethign completely differnt….

Does anyone know the story about the Cable Line Monster in Elkhart IN? It was near where the dead man’s tree was. About 25 years ago a kid on a motorcycle hit the tree with such an inpact his outline scarred the tree. It was that way for years on Cable Line Road. Last time I was in IN the tree had been cut down.
Lucy says: |

I’ve heard of the Cable Line haunting, yes the tree is cut down but there is a blue glow that come out of the ground where the tree once stood.

I was born and raised in Elkhart, and my parents used to drive me by the Cable Line Tree. It has been said that on foggy nights you can hear the screams of the person who hit the tree. You could see an outline of a person in the tree. I think this happened sometime in the 60’s or 70’s.

honestly, who goes into that house? It isn’t scary or anything but isn’t it a museum? and i truthfully no one goes to that museum or the one down the street from it, if that is a museum. but i never heard any stories about that house what-so-ever and i looked on the site and it seemed like the people who lived there were fine and they just died, no reason for them to stay in the house. but that is my opinion. and where is cable line road, i lived here for 18 years and don’t know where it’s at. but anyways, can someone tell me if it is true that in union, michigan on kesington road a guy murder his whole family? cause me and my friends have been going up there and it seems strange.

ruthmere is haunted whether you believe it or not.
Just because you don’t see or hear anything doesnt mean that spirits are there just like ward of the hallows said, and im paraphrasing here, spirits and memories both reside in that house therefore it is haunted in a sense

Ok, first of all, Ruthmere is NOT haunted. Second of all it is not even worth arguing about. I have lived in Elkhart for 29 yrs. and I have yet to hear of Cable Line Rd.? I honestly think people need to get a life other than arguing over something so juvenile.

I dunno about the High Dive tower being haunted, but I do know I peed off of the top of it one morning at about 5:30am while out fishing there. I guess that the ghost must not be easily offended, or it must’ve been amused by it, ’cause I never heard a thing (other than my buddy’s laughter).

Ruthmere Executive Director, if you really are the Director. Two things, first there is no such thing as bad Publicity. People are going to believe these things (it’s an old building) and there is nothing you can do about it. Second, If I wanted to say that both places are haunted I can do that. If I wanted to say that Ruthmere house is full of fake art and False history. I can not do that, because that is slander. All that some one saying that Ruthmere is haunted is going to do is get you people touring the Museum which brings Revenue which is something that you want! People come to these sites because they are interested and a bit open to these possabilitys. Yes there are people above that don’t believe that Ruthmere is haunted and that is fine. If they are going to tour it is because they are interested in the history and educational purpose. If they tour because they hear that it is haunted the worst thing for you is that you have to tell them that it is not haunted and they have still spent money there! I havent lived in Elkhart very long, this is the first time I have heard anything about the Ruthmere and I intended on touring it with my wife before this anyway. I don’t care if it is or not because I am a proude Spiritualist and it is natural to me to hear storys from people about this sort of thing. I want to tour Ruthmere because of it’s history factor, I like history and not because it may or may not be haunted. So don’t get so excited when some one says that it is Haunted, you can just tell them that you have not had a personal experience with anything of the sort. Thank you very much for opening your doors for the public. Sincerly, John
