Satanic Cemetery
In this old cemetery lies an old, burnt church that was the site of Satanic rituals many years ago. Many have seen ghosts walking around the site which is thought to be on of the seven gateways to hell. Today, the area has been fenced off due to the large number of visitors.
stull cemetary yeah i been there the church has been torn down the place is seeled up and if the neighbors acroos from it see you they will call the cops. trust me.

What, one person telling you it was torn down wasn’t enough? The church is GONE. And if you’ve been to Stull, it’s not like it was at all hard to find anyway — the city basically constitutes of the cemetary and about six buildings. There are probably ten times more dead people there than living.
But yeah, I went there once before it was torn down, got a good ten minutes before the folks across the street noticed us, and I can tell you, nothing really happened. We tried the bottle throwing (it’s supposed to not break against the wall, but they all did), we tried one of those crappy Ouija boards, and we even brought along some crazy pagan weirdo to see if she could do anything awesome. It wasn’t even worth the gas it took to get out there from Lawrence.
There have been, and always will be, SO many more worthwhile haunted places in the state to see.

I’ve heard that anyone caught around there now days will be taken to jail for the night, for trespassing…but there are several stories, claiming all kind of evil things that have gone on at that cemetary.
Comment by Tracy | 05.3.2006 | 1:08 am
I’ve been to Stull a couple times…both after the place had been torn down. You will get caught for trespassing if you try to climb over or slide under the chain link fencing.
Trust me (and several others who already commented), there is nothing to see. There is a pile of huge rock rubble and an orange construction fence that is falling down. Behind the church is an open field with an abandoned wooden wagon…coyotes howl time to time, but that’s about the only noise you hear other than your own breathing or speaking.
I think someone has a really wonderful imagination and liked to add the legend over time. Now, a frickin’ movie is being made based off the Stull Church and cemetary….this link is brand new…the movie has not been released just yet…but here goes…

The actual story of this haunted church isn’t the church that you see from the highway driving through Stull. The actual church that no longer stands fully is in the field BEHIND the cemetary. It was said that the pastor who first initiated the church was no pastor at all but a cultist. He was said to be demented and was often seemingly “possesed” by demons. He planted a tree inside the church that was to grow and become the gateway to hell. He was brutal to his followers and was said to have sacrificed young children there in order to open the gate of hell that was in the tree that grew through the church and was fed the blood of sacrfices. The throwing of the glass at the walls of the church and not breaking is due to the “tales” that you can see the church in it’s full building on certain nights that sacrifices were held and hear and see the occurances… throwing glass at the church will not break - because it doesn’t exsist anymore.
Just a little history on your history and the real story behind Stull church.

Halloween is said to be the most “active” night for the spirits of the sacrifices and cult members(thats no surprise of course). My babies dad went there last halloween and was the only one brave enough to even step foot on the steps. I don’t know much else besides you get an eiry feeling just driving past and looking at the place, I sure aint bout to step foot on the property.

It’s really not worth visiting. I went about 5 years ago and had the privilege of being chased into the woods by cops. Ended up walking 30 minutes through the woods in the rain and another 30 minutes to my car. If you get caught you’re looking at a huge fine. Good story behind the church but not so great to visit.

I ‘ve heard that the church there before it was torn down peoplewould throw stuff in the and not here it drop. I know this is true because my dad did that before and he looked inside and there was walls and a floor.

A friend of mine is from Lawrence and he and his buddies from High School used to go there before it was torn down. He said one of them saw some strange things in the building. There were names all over the inside and the only one with moonlight shining on it was the name of the guy who peaked inside. I know its a big country and all, but when the Pope is in the United States, his jet will not fly over Stull. From what I hear now, its not much to see and as has been posted, the most likely thing to happen if you go out there is a visit from the police, not spirits.
Comment by Wildcat | 09.19.2006 | 10:59 am
With all the police and no treaspassing postings… sounds like there are trying to cover-up something, with all the stuff you could make money for nowadays, seems like they could make it an attraction.. I mean come on, what else is there in Stull..? 1 cop, 2 roads, 1 handful of old buildings, and one of the most haunted places in america… If you ask me, seeing this place would be enough, especially outrunning some fat cop just to see this place with my own eyes.. I’m gonna go in the future, and when i do, maybe i’ll have a cool story to post when i get back… if i come back… dun dun duuuuuunnnnnnn!!!

It’s been years since I’ve even thought of Stull, Ks. I just kind of stumbled onto this website and low and behold I have a story. Although, probably not what you’re looking for. I went to Stull, about 15 years ago, with 3 other friends, the church was still standing then. We went inside hoping to find something that would scare the **** out of us. It was just an old burned down abandoned building, marked with graffiti and lit by moonlight. I think we were more scared of being caught by the police than being confronted with Satan or some evil demon spirit. Though I had no experience HERE, I DO NOT disount other stories as I do have other stories of some really scary encounters.

I grew up in Lawrence all of my life and I heard a lot of rumors about Stull cemetary. One friend even had a map of a satanic star drawn on it pinpointing the seven gateways to hell and Stull was one of them. However something always threw us off because the original Stull cemetary is about five miles to the south of where the church is, down the road that takes you around Clinton lake (take a left just past the church towards the lake) and before you get to the turn off for woodridge on your right is a dirt road, Just as you turn onto the dirt road is the entrance for the cemetary. It is on top of a little hill with two big pine type trees on top of it. The whole area around is field and very flat. And there is a witch burried under one of the trees, supposedly. I was there for halloween on midnight and nothing happened their either. It is a wonderful spot for the sunset though, and there is deffinitly someone burried under one of those trees. This is also a no hassle area, I never encountered anyone or police there.

the church also no longer exsits. It has been burt down and is now replaced with a modern looking white church. and as far as the cemetary goes…Don’t even try going there…the place is overrun with cops.

I love all this talk of Stull. All the letters here and such. All research shows nothing was know of this legend before 1970 when a prof. from Larwence wrote an article about it. Why you say. Well I must tell the truth of the Story of Stull. Myself and a few friends started the legend of Stull in High School in 1965. This is the truth. It is all a phoney. Sorry about all the trouble it has caused the town but it is just a big fake. We made it up. Not bad how it has spread world wide…..

I personally went to Stull about ten years ago with some friends. It was a pretty eerie place, but I think most of our nerves came from the alcohol and ghost stories we had been consuming all evening.
At that time, the four walls of the church were still standing, but the roof had long ago collapsed. The new church was across the street. There was also a very large tree in down the hill from the church.
I’ve read the comments on here, and I wanted to correct a couple of things. There were no stairs that I ever saw at Stull. We walked the entire perimeter of the building and also climbed in one of the windows.
Since that time, the church and the tree out front have been torn/cut down. Looking at pictures on the Internet, it seems that there is just a pile of stones atop the hill above the cemetery.
There wasn’t much to see ten years ago, and there’s nothing at all to see now. I would suggest if you really need to see the place to do a quick drive-by to avoid a night in jail.

Me and my friends went there last night and it was nothing but a waste of time. The cops were waiting for us at the top of the hill cause they had cops down the hill hidden that told them we were comming. We didn’t get arrested or cited, but it was just a big hassle and completely pointless. Plus, there’s nothing to look at. Just a complete waste.

3 of us went to Stull on a cool night a couple of years ago. We had charged our digital cameras before we left. We came in from the Topeka side. It seemed like it took forever to get there. Upon turning into the openning in the fence (where you might call the drive into the graveyard), My wife and her daughter began to snap photos. I rolled down the windows and they started snapping. Each of them got off 2 clicks before the cameras went DEAD! All of a sudden, there was a very cold wind that blew through the car. Needless to say, we got the heck out of there!
Getting BACK to Topeka seemed like it only took 10 minutes! I couldn’t believe it when I saw the highway that we were to head North on.
After getting home, I put the pictures on the computer and brightened them up a bit. WOW!
The first picture didn’t show anything. The second picture was full of Orbs flying in all directions and some of them on our side of the fence.
The second picture taken by my step-daughter had a fog in it that looked like 3 people standing on the inside of the fence. She has lost her picture, but we still have the picture with the flying orbs in it. I would like to share this picture with you all, but the site won’t let me paste it into the article.

I’ve lived in Kansas for my entire life, and I’ve been to the Stull cemetery. The only thing even remotely scary about it are the stories people make up about bogus experiences there and the prospect of spending the night in jail for being caught there.
Having researched it rather extensively, I can tell you that EVERYTHING about it — from the non-breaking bottles, to the haunted tree inside the old church, to the witch, to the ‘gateway to hell’ — is fabrication.
And, as others have already pointed out, after many years of chasing off drunken college students looking for a paranormal thrill, they’ve long-since bulldozed the supposedly haunted church.
It doesn’t get more ‘nothing to see here’ than the Stull cemetery.

i was reading about something 3 yrs ago on the internet, i dont remember the exact name of the town in kansas but after reading all of this i am pretty sure this is what i was looking at. i saw pictures of the church and there WERE stairs in the picture, it just looked like maybe a floor trap to a cellar or something. some of the things that i read on there were that even tho there wasnt a roof if it rained no water got inside the church, and that the stairs have no end, they just go on till u get to hell (idk how true any of this is)and the site also had a warning about the cops. just by looking at the pictures of this, yeah maybe there could b a possibility of the cops trying to cover up the story, but more than likely all they are doing is saving themselves from a major law suit from some dumb kid going in there at night and having a wall collapse on them.

I have been to Stull twice in the past 5 years. I have experianced paranormal activity at almost every “haunted” place I have been. Stull however is completely fake! The bottle not breaking, the gateway to Hell, demonic possesion none of this is true. The only true thing is the cops will be called and you will spend the night in jail if your caught. This is guarenteed. The orbs that have been seen I will say are probably real considering the dead in the cemetary probably just want to be left alone and continue their afterlife unbothered. If you feel you really must go see Stull then I suggest you bring fine money with you because if you get caught thats the only thing you are getting. Enjoy!

I went to Stull some years ago and never once encountered a cop. However, the photos that were taken proved to be very interesting.
The church didn’t burn down because it was supposedly brick. From what I saw on a Stull website, it was destroyed and nobody knows who gave the order for it. The glass that won’t break was due to a wire fence around the church. As for the rain not entering the church even though there’s no roof, no comment. But I found it interesting when a supposed article in Time, I think it was, stated that the pope would not fly over that part of Kansas because it was unholy. You know, would’t it be easier to just let people come in and see that nothing is going to happen rather than not answer any questions? Granted they’re tired of it all, but their silence is actually making their problem bigger. It’s as if they KNOW something is/has been going on but don’t want anyone to know about it. Sounds suspicious to me.

We went on a hunt to find the Stull Church back in Late October 2000. We drove out from Olathe, KS and video taped the trip. We listened to Halloween sound effects the whole way out there. It took us about two hours to find the place because we ended up passing it about 6 times. Seriously, it’s just a blip on the side of the road…and we went at night. I’m not sure if a cop guards it all the time or at all anymore, but being that it was a few days before Halloween, there was a Deputy guarding the fence once we finally realized where the church was. While we couldn’t stick around, we did get a good look at the church which seemed to glow a bit brighter than expected considering there weren’t a lot of streetlights around. I didn’t get any video footage or anything, but it was a fun little trip anyway…I’m sad to hear it was torn down in 2002. I dunno if the fables are or ever were true - but it sure was a spooky looking little church.

Well I just drove through Stull from Lawrence to south Topeka about 2 weeks ago. I too have been in that *church* when I was a teenager. I really never felt anything unholy or supernatural. It was sort of cool though. I can verify that YES the building without the roof is now gone from the cemetery so not sure what Joshua is talking about who says he walks by it. Perhaps there is another church at Stull? It’s now just a cemetery with a very tall fence and gates around it.
When I was a teenager there was also a supposed demonic cult barn out on south 93rd street. I’ve heard many stories but never went into the building myself. I do know the *neighbor* to the dilapidated church took it upon himself to use a shotgun to scare off later visitors. My friends and I did drive out there once. I did feel something out there but would’ve had to have gone inside to see if what I felt was truly demonic or other.

I went to this place in 2000. The church was still standing at the time. The place was all fenced off though, so I don’t know how you other people got in the cemetary. But there were some unexplanned things that happend to us that night. Let me elaborate:
My friend was driving, I was in the passengers seat, and we had two other friends in the back. We were east bound on the main road that goes through Stull.. the cemetary was on the left side of the road… I wanted to take a picture, so we turned around. So, now, we are West Bound on the road. We pulled up to the front of the cememtary and I leaned out the window to take a picture. As I was snapping the first picture, I felt something on may hand.. I didn’t say anything.. at the same time, my friend in the Driver’s seat started freaking out… We were all like “what?”. She said that she just saw a really bright light in front of her but the girls in the back seat did not see anything. She said that it looked like a car driving by, but there was not a car on the road at all. She said that it looked like a car, but that the lights seemed like they were on the car. So, I grabbed the camera again and took a picture of the car. Then I took another picture of the cemetary. It was kind of starting to freak everyone out, so we left and went back to Manhattan.
When we got back to KSU, we took the film to Wal-mart to get developed to see if we could see anything. The next day, we went in and picked up the pictures. The first picture (the one that I took at the same time that my friend saw the light and I felt something) was blurred. It looked like someone was running past the camera. The second picture that I took was of the car. That one was pretty normal. (So now we know that there is nothing wrong with the film).. then the third picture of the cemetary… ok.. remember there was a fence that we did not go past. We were on the outside of the cemetary… it was daylight… but, up to the fence, the picture was completely clear… beyond the fence.. it was solid fog!! you could not see anything. We got freaked out and thought that if anything about Stull was true, that we better burn the pictures because we did not want them or us to get possessed.
As the pictures were burning, it sounded like a high pitched squeel… you know kinda of like it sounds when you pick up the phone when someone is on dial up internet! I am not really sure what happend that day, but I was totally freaked out and so were my friends.
FYI– I did not see one person in the town that day. There were no cops or anything. Not a person in site.

Well it is a cemetary so that place is probly crawling with ghosts and spirts. Some might not remember thier death, or not belive their dead, or they just haven’t gone to the after life yet. But I’m sure there are things still walking around out their.
I lived by a cematary and I allways used to see things walking around out there. I am sure they wern’t people because the fence is alarmed so you have to have a key and they cound’t climb over it because at the top it is just like a jail wall. I was so freaked out that I won’t go to a cematary alone or at night. And now I always get awful dreams about the things I saw. It’s like they are trying to tell me something. I went to Stull cemetery one night coming back from Lawrence back in 2003. The church was torn down at the time, but pieces were still their. I took a little chunk of the church home with me, and put it in my computer room. Well, the next night my dog went to the computer room and just stopped, once he got passed the doorway, he started barking and growling at the piece of the church. He did this for about 2 hours and the next day I put it in a different spot. My dog found it and started barking and growling at it, and he quit going into that room until I returned the rock back to Stull Cemetery. It is seriously a true story and very odd, if a might add.

I am not 100% sure about the staircase, but i have been to stull cemetary, (the fenced off one. If anyone knows of antoher Stull Cemetary PLEASE post a comment), and here’s what happened when i got there. it was a very stormy night and it took my friends and i about two hours to get tehre. It rained ALL the way there, but as soon as we found the road the church was on, the rain stopped but the lightning continuded to light up the sky like i’ve never seen before. As soon as we came to the cemetary it was lit up by lightning, which had to be one of the creepiest things have ever seen. The weather picked up and it looked like a tornado was going to appear. We made our way onto the cemetary(not saying how we got on) and were hit with chills. we went to the back right of the church, where we heared hte staircase was. we found a bunch of watermelon sized rock in a circle under a tree. the rocks were DEFINATLY filling something. I do believe there is something haunted about this place and the citizens of Stull add to this. Im not sure if the following is true, but it is what i have read. The Stull Church, which was torn down in 2002, had been abandoned since 1922. if the residents hated teh attention from the church, why not tear it down sooner? Also, this may be a little too farfetch’d, but im just thinking, Why do the residents of Stull stay in Stull. there is nothing there, absolutly nothing! The town was settled by German immigrants who were supposably DEEP into witch craft. What if some of those families never left? What if there ancesters remain till this day guarding what they KNOW is there? Not plausable, but definatly possible. I meen no disrespect to Stull of its residentd, this is just theory. To bring this back up, what if the real haunted cemetary is located somewhere else in Stull. What if the fences and signs are there to get our attention. Just thinking. To end my rather long bulliten, i will ask all of those who do go to Stull to have respect. Theres no harm in searching or walking around, but please don’t vandalize or even make very much noise. Thank You.

I’ve been to the Stull cemetary, many, many times. I was told stories and read an article from the Topeka paper about it. So, I have been there, and usually, nothing happened. However, my last visit, right before the fence was put up, I did have an experience!
I had brought a friend and was explaining the legend of the cemetary. Someone had come through the night before and tipped many tombstones over. We went up the road, passing a guy putting up a sign at the entrance. The road inside goes in a circle. We went to the right and past the “church”. A car was blocking our exit, so we had to turn around and go back the way we came from. While doing so, my car died. Out of the clear blue! Nothing was wrong with it either before or after that visit! Anyway, I kept trying to start it, after a while I got scared. Stull is out in the middle of no where! After many, many tries, the car started and I gunned it out of there! On the way out, that man by the entrance stoped us….he had a pitch fork in his hand. He asked why we were there. I told him the truth. His eyes were very strange. It cannot be described. He told us to leave and not come back. I have driven by, but have never gone back there!
A friend was a gray witch. She and her coven went there. They drove up on the road and parked. She saw something she said was around 7 ft. tall with red glowing eyes…..and the next thing she knew…..her car was out on the road, outside the cemetary!
People from KU have researched the Stull Cemetary…..it is truly haunted and quite posibly one of the gates to HELL! Be careful if you want to go there. It is well patrolled and the towns folk will call the sheriff!

I grew up in Lawrence during the 1980s, and have driven through Stull multiple times. First of all, the white Methodist church is still very much in use and sits on the South side of the road. The supposedly haunted church is on the North side, and sits back from the road behind a cemetary.
The old church was made of native limestone (not brick, and was abandoned for decades. There was a fire there some years ago, that did destroy whatever wooden structure the church once had. After some more years of weather and exposure to the Kansas elements, the walls were finally demolished to help protect the owners from liability.
I remember kids going out when I was in high school and college, but no one ever saw anything except lots of beer being consumed. The private owners (yes, it is privately owned) do have it all fenced off to try to ensure that the people who are buried there can rest in peace.

The Stull Cemetary story was made up by a KU student for a writing class. This has never been the “gateway to hell” and the cemetary is just like any other cemetary. I was able to get the last pictures of the church before they tore it down. This is NOT a haunted site. The Sallie House in Atchison is haunted and the Kansas Paranormal Group have been there for over three years documenting paranormal events.

Lisa S What year of car do you have. If it is old it could’ve stalled when you were turning around.I personally don’t believe in ghosts, but it does sound interesting to read about your experience.
