Real Haunted House

Schweppe Mansion

Chicago, Illinois

This stone mansion with twenty rooms was unoccupied for half a century after the man who owned it committed suicide; he was mourning the loss of his wife Laura Schweppe. The halls are haunted by the ghost of his servant. The ghost of the former owner is seen in the bedrooms. There is one window in the master bedroom that, despite all the other windows being filthy, never needs cleaning.

47X Mayflower Road
Lake Forest, IL 60045

It’s four something. You can’t miss it. Look at Mayflower Road, Lake Forest, IL on google maps. It only runs about a mile and there’s only a few houses on the block. It’s hard to miss a 20 room mansion…

Dont worry about trying to see this place. You will drive past the front and all you will see is a fence with shrubs all along the front then a huge brick house which is not the mansion but the gate house, further down from the gate house is the gate and from that all you can see is the long driveway. You will NOT beable to even view the actual mansion from the road. It is however a lovely area! Many chicago socialites live right around there.

This house is on mayflower road in Lake Forest Illinois, close by where I live. I believe this may be a picture of it. I am not 100% sure so dont get mad..http://www.gazebonews.com/.a/6a00e5522fd0ca88340105368ac8f6970b-800wi

More info:This English Tudor mansion was purchased as a wedding gift for Laura Shedd and Charles Schweppe, the mansion has 20 bedrooms and 18 bathrooms.

When Laura Schweppe died in 1937 at the age of 58 she had a fortune of over $10 million dollars of which only $200k was left to her husband the rest went to her children. With Charles disappointment in this and him being 60 years old, he started to have trouble sleeping and his mental health started to deteriorate. In 1941 his servants found him dead in bed with a gun shot to the head, a note with “I`ve been awake all night. It`s terrible” was found on the dresser.

The mansion was then unoccupied for 46 years after his death. During this time there were rumors that the ghost of the family`s servant haunted the mansion`s hallways and kitchen area, while the ghosts of the owners haunt the bedrooms. It was said that one of the windows of the master bedroom never needed to be cleaned, while all the others collected dust over the years. After the 46 years of being abandoned the mansion was then purchased by a couple for over $5 million.
hope that helped

I used to live in IL. in a town called Danville. Across the street, the was a little white abandon house. Even though we were little, my brother and i used to see strange things through the windows. We moved to SC in 2004. But, when we visit, that house still gives me the creeps.

ARE YOU SURE WHERE THE MANSION IS? ARE YOU SURE IT’S CHICAGO AND NOT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STATE AND THAT THE MOTHER AND DAUGHTER WEREN’T KILLED IN A HOUSE FIRE? THEN THE FATHER MIGHT HAVE COMMITTED SUICIDE. BUT SURVIVING IS THE YOUNGER DAUGHER THAT WILL NOT SELL. IT WAS MY DREAM HOUSE AS A CHILD.
