Real Haunted House

Slaughterhouse (Luana’s Canyon)

Kingman, Arizona

During the gold rush days of the 1800’s, a gold miner and his family lived a small wood shack along a dry wash in the heart of the canyon. Via mule, the husband would venture into the Northwestern Mountains in search of gold, returning semimonthly with food for his wife Luana and their young children. One month, however, the gold miner did not return. Soon, supplies ran out and the children began to starve. Luana, not able to tolerate the sight of her starving children, lost her mind. During a thunderstorm, she put on her wedding dress and chopped her children up into several pieces. Luana went to the river and tossed the remnants down stream. Luana returned the next morning and crying for the return of her children she died. It is said that on certain nights the her wailing may be heard from within the canyon’s walls.

I love how no one has been able to spell ‘psyco’ yet. Haha.

Either way, I don’t really believe this story. If anything, the woman would have already been crazy for a while, and would have murdered the kids and/or been sent to an asylum anyway. May variations of this story have been told, as have different versions of ‘The Phantom Hitchiker’. They make for a good scare, but seldom are they true. Besides, many of them say the criminal was never caught- thus being impossible to have all the facts anyway.

hi everyone.
i have heard alot about this my hole life.
uncles, aunts, grandparents and friends tell different stories.
well who cares what really happen because there is something out there.
ive visited the canyon many times but the last time was the scariest thing ive ever experienced.

i am a local kingman teenager.
me and my friends were looking for something scary to do.
we have went every where at night, fort beal, graveyard, stormdrains esc.
well on this night behind south side park over the tracks(my claimed haunted spot)5 of my friends and i visited the canyon. kyle and mike stayed in the truck because they didnt even want to go anywhere and we dragged them along. nay, woodrow, clinton, and i wazlked through the baseball parks and over the tracks.
there are 3 houses there normal ppl living there.
i have to say they are harmless but at the same time they must deal with the strange canyon every single night.
1st off we stood on the traks looking in the dark.
a small bouncing light appeared on a mountain.
we desided not to ditch each other if something happen.
we made our way into the wash.
the light had disapeared.
everything was fine until we decided to leave.
my frieds said they could hear things.
i of corse didnt.
as we walked back over the tracks we heard the most shocking wispers of a young girl.
clinton and nay ran for the bright lights of the south side baseball parks.
i turned with the flash light and wood screamed dont leave me! i said did you here that?
once we got back to the truck we couldnt wait to tell mike and kyle.
after our story they said the tool box in the back had opened and they thought nothing of it.

this is true, i have been in that area tons of times playing baseball.
nothing ever happen.
i know it was because the time we visited the site.
1-3 oclock.
i encourage you to go there but bring friends and dont go on those ppls property.
just have fun.

My family and I moved to Kingman over a year ago and I had heard the story, and variations, of Slaughterhouse Canyon many times. After attending a City Council meeting last night which proposed a change of the road name from Canyon Road to Slaughterhouse Canyon Road, I decided to go check it out from Hualapai Mountain Road onto Mission Blvd to Canyon Rd. and into the canyon. I saw the rock with the “cross” and an indecipherable word spray painted on it. We also saw the three rocks at the end, (the beginning if you are coming from the SSP in downtown), of the road at the tracks. What we didn’t see is a house that can be considered a viable structure. Is the incinerator part of the property? What’s the story that surrounds that? It looks like a party place where people get their kicks on route 66 with tires and box springs. Surprising though, there were many more water and Gatorade bottles than beer bottles.

Any more information regarding the specific whereabouts of the location would be great.

Thank you!!

That story about Luana’s Canyon has been told so many different ways, I am not sure the truth is known anymore! Also, Luana’s Canyon is a totally different story than the Slaughterhouse. That story has been told many times too! The way I heard it, several children were kidnapped, taken to the slaughterhouse, and murdered. Many people today claim they have heard the cries of children coming from the now-abandoned slaughterhouse. Who really knows? Again, that is just ONE version that I have heard. Honestly, that stuff creeps me out! If there are ghosts there — I will leave them alone and not show up!

I have lived in kingman my whole life, and i have been to slaughterhouse many many times, and i know that there is something there, a woman who likes to apper and scream and moan. i have had many many friends along with myself see and hear this woman, and my friends have taken many creepy pictures of orbs and figures next to the building (it isnt a full building its 1/2 torn down). although im not sure if this is the right story or not, but there IS something there.. also at blackbridge which isnt that far from slaughthouse, late at night/early in the morning. you can hear gunshots and sometimes (not often) there is a girl hanging from the bridge, it is said that the girl actully hung herself from the bridge, but it is none the less creepy.

Every one that i know including me who have ever been down there will tell you the same thing, you can see her in her white dress and hear her weeping and children crying. You will also probably experience your car stalling but yet your car will be moving and from time to time you will get little hand prints on your bumper, like kids were pushing you around that corner!!!! I lived in this very slaughterhouse canyon for years as a child. From age 5-13. The name serves a dual purpose. There once was a slaughterhouse that was later torn down near the spot where the white two story house is now. However, yes, you can hear screams some nights and she screams “Help me” so obviously some of the story did not make it to legend… May she rest in peace.

It appears that there are a number of individuals that are trying to cross the stories of Slaugterhouse Canyon and Lorona of Mexican lore and say they are the same thing. One main difference that distinguishes these stories as truly being different, is the water. Be it canal or river, the closest river of water to Slaughterhouse Canyon is 30 plus miles west to the Colorado River, and in the original recollection of the story, there is no mention of water. So, with that being said, one has to believe that the story of Slaughterhouse Canyon has enough facts, there is/was an actual slaughterhouse there, to possibly be true. So, stop the swearing and cussing and calling people names, and let those of us who wish to believe in the paranormal have our day.

Oh, but there *is* water that rushes through Slaughterhouse canyon when the monsoons come. Very strong gushes of water. The story of Luana occurs during such a thunderstorm.

I remember reading a letter in the Kingman Daily Miner about a senior from the Kingman high school in the 1950’s who decided to play a prank on the juniors who used Slaughterhouse/Luana’s canyon as the location for their annual junior party. He decided to hide in the canyon early, and watched as the kids began to arrive and build a campfire. He waited and watched until midnight, when he began to “scream” and clang bottles together. He said the kids all began running to their cars and speeding out of the canyon as fast as they could go.

As he was wrought with laughter, he suddenly realized he was all alone. He then began to hear a faint moaning far off in the distance. He started walking toward his jeep, which he had hidden in a side canyon. But the crying voice kept getting closer….He began to run….faster and faster…over the boulders and scratching himself on the brush.

His jeep was parked in a wash, and just yards away he heard a scream and looked back – he saw a flash of white coming down the same hill toward him, which then quickly disappeared.

He jumped into the jeep and, in his panicked state, flooded the motor. It wouldn’t start. He tried several times, but nothing. Just as the motor finally turned over, he felt something heavy jump on the back of his jeep! Too terrified to turn around and look, he mashed on the gas pedal and the jeep began bouncing down the wash. He began to hear the woman’s screams again, but now fading away as his jeep scrambled out of the canyon.

There were no other cars anywhere and nobody passed him on the way to the little league park where he was to meet the other 4 seniors who were in on the prank. As he pulled into the parking lot, the others were laughing hysterically.

At first, he thought they had double pranked him, but then realized that not one of them could have possibly been in that canyon with him.

The seniors simply said to him, “My gosh you sure scared them! If you could have just seen all those juniors speeding out of that canyon! We’ve never seen anything funnier than that!”

He said he kept the full story of the “Junior scare night” a secret for over 30 years – until he finally decided to write about it in the Kingman Daily Miner after hearing so many other people relate very similar stories.
