Real Haunted House

Spontaneous Combustion

Des Moines, Iowa

This house is said to be haunted by two men, a woman, and a child — arsonists who killed a total of six people through their blazes. Today, the house is known to randomly burst in to flames, though no damage is sustained. There are also cold spots and strange odors. Some have even been pushed down the stairs while in the house alone.

I have lived in Des Moines for 58 years, and NO ONE in this city that I know of, and I know a LOT of people in this city, have EVER heard of this house. It does NOT exist , and HAS NEVER existed. More ignorant stories put out by ignorant people. The “house of ladders” really DID exist. It was NOT haunted or anything of the kind. It was on County line road on the southeast corner of County line an Fleur Drive. They were dirt roads at the time. The elderly gentleman and his family who lived there had a small home repair business, and he would just lay his ladders up against the side of the house until they were needed. Nothing “haunted ” or scary about the place. I am still surprised about how these persistent and false stories abound around here. There is NOT or has NEVER been one single piece of fact or proof other than “my cousin’s sister’s boyfriend heard it from his great grandfather. Come on, be real here.

I have read about that house with spontaneous fires. It’s located on Grand Ave near the Salsbury house? If you kids are interested in all this stuff, when I was younger I read a book called the “National Haunted Directory” or something of that sort. I don’t know where it is at now , but it’s worth looking up. It pretty much answers all the questions I’ve seen posted here.

I have lived in Des Moines all of my life and have never heard about a haunted house associated with fires. I have read a lot of books about hauntings in the area and that one does not ring a bell, but that don’t mean anything. My house could be haunted, and was investigated by D.I.E.P.A.R.T, you can read about it if you can find their website, and look up Water House. We had a lot of activity involving water for about six months and then it quit. My youngest son who has shown signs of being able to see and hear the dead, claims to hear voices on a weekly basis. This started at the age of 15 months and he is now almost 14 years old. In his early years he often gave descriptions of his ‘dead people’, and 99% of the time he described my brother and sister-in-law who died in an auto accident 9 years before my son was born, and he never knew them. The other 1% of the time he described an aunt who passed of cancer when he was 6 months old. When he was 6 he found a picture of my brother stashed in an old book, he brought it to me and told me that the man in the picture was the “ghost who loved me”, I asked him how he knew that, and his reply was “Because he told me”.

I believe every wood, and wish I could see and hear what he does.

Why are people asking “where is this place?” If you would take the time to read you would clearly notice it’s location is listed right under the title.

Anyway, of course a house that was burned down years ago is still going to contain “strange odors.”

KATIE – IF YOU WILL NOTE, THE CITY IS LISTED UNDER THE TITLE, NOT THE ADDRESS, WHICH IS WHAT PEOPLE ARE WANTING.

I would like to tell you guys and gals that you should really do your research before you speak on such things.

There are two black angels in Iowa.

One in Iowa City, and One in Counsil Bluffs.

My great great aunt Teresa is the one who bought the Black Angel in Iowa City. I would like to say right now that our family is not evil and we are not witches as several stories lead.

The reason for the Angels wings and face looking down is because she is there to protect her loved ones. You can tell that she is looking down to PROTECT them!

I have been to the Black Angel in Iowa City. Angel of protection or not, it was creeeepy. There are also several other haunted places in central Iowa. There are several in a book called the Haunted Heartland. I have been to Oswalt bridge between Colfax and Mitchellville. It is said to be the site of several satanic activities in the past. It was actually discussed in a sociology book I had in college. Although I have never encountered anything there, a high school friend camped out and woke up with a pentagram drawn around her.

Just a couple of weeks ago me and a couple of friends went out to level b roads.Although we’re from the DMI we ended up in Carlise and Indianola that day.We decided to go drive on the level b roads but they were wet so we went on a different route. We ended up finding a rusty looking bridge in Indianola and since it was around 6:00 it was a little dark outside but we went on and halfway through the bridge a guy ran by our truck and so we didnt see him get up fyi we got out of the car no one was there.we were freaked we got in the truck locked our doors and got the **** of that bridge. As we drove on dirt roads that no one knew lead to.We saw child once we went by the bridge again, but this time they were on the rails of the bridge there were at least four of them. They looked back at us and smiled. We got out of the car to try and stop the children from ending their lives.but once we were all out of the truck and the last door was shut the children looked back one last time and jumped of the bridge. As for looking down no one ended up in the little creek that was down below.Maybe that bridge was the one I have heard of so much in ghost stories we told all the time but know I know this bridge is no longer just a story it’s as ****ing real as it gets out there.

Lisa I have also experienced something similar on a bridge like that in the middle of nowhere of Indianola.Everything except the guy running in front of our car.The day it happened was late October last year but along with the children we got a women dressed in a church dress but she looked demonted. She looked at us and said “If you know whats good for you you shall turn around and never come on this bridge ever.”she said it with the coldest look on her face. She turned and motioned to something we couldn’t see behind the trees and many children came and started rocking our car.My friend Jennifer decided to honk the horn and the children and woman fled.We drove over the bridge again a week later and my friends and I saw the women again strangly the woman saw us and waved.I look forward to going up there this weekend late at night to see if she remains there.Maybe if you guys go up there and explore this weekend maybe talk to locals and ask questions you may find answers and also you’ll find me also looking for answers.

There is an old bridge where a single mom woke up to find her frozen baby in the water and was found reatching out to her, both dead.three days after a ice storm.
You can often her whimpering there and crying, its right in betwenn des moines and some little city , you can see the city on the way there down a dirt road to you right.Im not sure whats on the other side of the bridge, it creepy though. The death was in the last 10 years.
Also: anyone know anything about the recently torn down insane asylum “storey county care facility”?. that was a creepy place. complete with a grave yard and a shooting range attached. you could sneak in through the basment. the attic allways smelled sweet.i tryed to head out the and the whole massive (three to four footballs feilds sized) building was gone.
anyone?anyone??

also, the house i grew up in always has a ghostly sleeper. it snores! thats it, i mean some serious snoring though.we just used to hush it.it would stop.
there was also the regular stuff with t.v.’s turning on and things. i saw a really freaky TALL black shadow on differnt occasions just standing there, i would just go back to my room, really freaked out but safe.
a friend that lived in the house where his uncle killed himself still has the partial rope hanging. it would swing somtimes there was angry noises and banging often.
DesMoines is a haunted place, people just dont talk about it.
anyone remember when that lady got burned under 6th ave. bridge? go under there. that gota be haunted.i can name a dozzen creepy spots but most of them are privetly owned and i sneak in to them or otherwise “no zones” and i dont want other people there but more people have to know pleny, i have seen people at some of them.

The House of Ladders WAS located just east of the intersection of Fleur Dr and County Line Rd. This used to be a dirt road just south of the Memorial Gardens Cemetary off Fleur Dr. I am 51 years old and heard the story from my older sister. It had nothing to do with arsonists or spontanious combustion. The story was that there was an old man that lived in the house and his wife had run off to meet her lover by sneaking out an upstairs window and climning down a ladder. She never actually left because she fell to her death. He left the ladders up on the house in hopes that she would return to him by climbing up one of the ladders.
I went there once when I was about 16 with some friends. We pulled in the drive of the old two story farm house and the farmer came out with a shot gun. We left fast. I never went back. I imagine it was just some old man living there and he was sick of all of us kids coming around to look at the house all hours of the day and night. Strange thing about the story is that none of the ladders were actually up against the windows, they were just leaning up against the house and it would have been very difficult to reach a window by climbing any of the ladders. His house was also about 5 different colors and looked as if he was just painting with all different colors of paint. It was an old run down farm house and the fact that it was by a cemetary made for a good story. The house has been gone for years, the bypass is there now.
I like a good ghost story as well as the next person.
But until I actually see one its just in fun.

Well, I may have been wrong. My husband has heard of the house and knows which it house it is because he used to deliver mail to it. But he does not remember the house number. I will see if he will show it to me the next time we go for a drive, and then I will give the address.
