I have been to this house, it was about 10 years ago. I do not remember how to get there. A friend took me there all I remember is that it was at the end of a gravel road on the south side. I did not want to go inside of the house there were very intense bad felling that overwhelmed me as soon as got out of the car. I told my friend that I wanted to leave asap. As we were leaving(and yes I know how crazy this is going to sound) we were telling my friend that took us there that she had made the whole story up in hopes of freaking us out. As soon as we said that flames burst up from the road on both sides of us then we heard a blood curdling scream that seemed like it was inside of the car. I have never been so scared in my life. This place is very real. Don’t know if the back storie about the house that I heard is true or not but it is interesting…I man and his family lived there and he also had another family in another state, he became so ridled with guilt that he killed both families and himself. Then set the house on fire. Supposedly a few contractors tried to renovate the house after the fire so that the property could be sold but everytime they put up new drywall or stairs, etc it would catch on fire. None of the contactors were hurt but none of them wanted to work on the house again. Like I said don’t know if the back storie is true or not but I know what I saw and it was real!

the marbury house in des moines is so much cooler than this. this site needs to put up the marbury house. that place is scary.

I believe the story is true i’m a member of Dickson County Ghost Hunters and we’ve been on a lot of hunts so when u become a real hunter and witness stuff happen dont call these stories dumb.

I’ve heard of the Marbury House, too. That place is scary. My brother in law drove past there one night and said that he could see a figure in the front window. And the scary part…… no one has lived in that house 40 years!!!

there is also a haunted cemetary just east of chariton Iowa. This cemetary is called Stoneking it is where joseph stoneking is burried. The road leading to the cemetary has houses and an abandoned school house and it is said that the people living in these houses belong to a cult. There is one house that has a hearse parked outside and me and my friends have actually been chased out by the hearse. This place is truly freaky and I have seen some very strange things there myself. You should go check it out.

hickman house: i can verify this house is haunted my family has owned that house for over 60 years. It is very creepy I hardly ever go other there cuz I’m not close to that family member but when I do I make sure I’m not left alone

I forgot to mention no it does not burst into flames! It caught fire once and no that’s not how the people died!

The “house of ladders” is off County Line Rd. in southeast Des Moines. You turn south off County Line onto another road. I don’t remember the name for sure (try Southwold Road)and follow it until it dead ends. The house will be on the south side of the street. About 10 years ago, a group of friends and I drove past the house at night out of curiosity. After we turned around and were getting ready to drive away, we all heard the same ethereal scream. Of course, after we all confirmed each other had “heard it,” we began blurting our accounts of what it sounded like. We all had the same description: a piercing shriek that sounded as if came from inside our ears and was contained inside the vehicle. The radio had been turned down to barely audible. The driver even scanned back through the previous few CD tracks to see if there were any such noises on the disc. It was late, so there was no one outside in the area, and the surrounding residences were farm homes. They were widely spaced since the area toes the line of rural. I am not easily convinced of supernatural activity, and I’m a rational, educated individual. But to this day I will not back down from my assertion that the scream was paranormal. I haven’t been back there since, so I’m not sure if the house still exists. Happy hunting!
