Real Haunted House

St. Francis Hospital

Colorado Springs, Colorado

The room formerly used as the tuberculosis ward, is now a records room. There are at least two spirits that have been reported to haunt the area. One will often come behind nurses in the room and ask in a muffled voice, “What ya doin?”. Another spirit was reported to have locked an employee in a closet.

I worked at St. Francis for six years and often experienced things that I could not explain. The records room in on the second floor of what is refered to as the 29 building. Even though the public address system has been disconnected for many years you can still hear static coming from the speakers. On several occasions the ghost of doctors have been seen in the doctor’s lounge on the main floor and I have heard a female’s voice in an empty office in the former adminstration area.

That place is creepy during the evening. My Mom just got home from the psychiatric part and we visited her every night for the past 4 nights. Last night one of the elevators came down from one of the other floors and when the door opened there was no one there. No one had pressed the button for the elevator to come so it must have been one of the ghosts sending us one.

that’s really creepy. my mom got a job there when we lived just near colorado springs. i can’t say my mom was a real believer in ghost, but she didnt say it wasn’t possible. anyway she would come home all the time telling me about weird things that she would see or hear. (cuz i’m highly interested in this stuff!) anyway she would say all the time about hating having to go into the records room and how the elevators would do that exact thing. she never really expecience anything truly substantial, but to hear it from other people is kind of reassuring. But i have one question does anyone remember the story / stories about the nuns. i faintly remember one about the nuns in the gardens. but wasn’t there tunnels from hospital over to the chapel? if you do know these please feel free to email me @ : thank you.

I use to work at this hospital, and the stuff there I could not explain… LIKE when you walk into the 29 building, you can hear footsteps behind you like someone was right behind you following you, but when I would turn around no one would be there or anywhere around me, and I witnessed a figure walking into what I came up to a CLOSED elevator.Myself and another co worker were moving stuff onto that floor, it sounded like the door was rattling and when we walked past it stopped then it started up as we walked by. You can also hear someone faintly whistle a tune

OMFG I was born in that hospital and I was so little that i dont remember that much about the hospital but i do remember that when i was like 4 i went there and I saw this nurse and she would creep me out she would like do the same stuff to me when i went there with my mom but instead she would say “How you doin?”

Yah this might help you all out. On the staticing speakers, that is probably because the amplifier is still on although the Microphone(s) was disconnected years ago. In a building like that it isn’t worth the money to find it. Also alot or all elevators are made to cycle by them selves. The Idea is to go to the most common floors and maybe save a possible rider a minute. Also possible vibrating motors (for the elevator and or ventalation and such) could be the culprit for vibrating doors. In these cases the vibrations can come and go for more than one reason.Don’t get me wrong I believe in ghosts, I have lived in Colorado Springs my whole life and have had to many friends tell me where they actually are. And guess what? St Francis is one of them :) or :( which ever way you feel about it. lol

I’ve enjoyed reading your comments. My family and I are planning a trip to Colorado Springs in April 2007 and we’d really like to go to some haunted places. Do any of you know of any haunted tours or places that allow the public to come in? Any recommendations? We (especially my son and I) are believers and are really into this sort of thing.

“Please use correct grammar, capitalization, and punctuation. Let’s try to keep this place looking classy. Real Haunts reserves the right to remove any comment that does not adhere to this requirement or is otherwise inappropriate.”

I’m glad I found this site, but I am becoming increasingly frustrated by the lack of proper grammer and punctuation on the Internet. I, too, was born at this hospital. I would love to check it out, but with proper equipment. I always feel uncomfortable asking home and buisiness owners if I can hunt. Because you cannot just walk into a hospital with a camera and tons of equipment. The patients there could be offended, as well as employees who don’t want to be open-minded to ghost hunters. Could be worth the effort, though.

Brielle that’s funny that they want you to use correct grammar, capitalization, and punctuation and you were complaining about how it bothers you that people don’t then you spelled the word “business” incorrectly! You spelled it “buisiness”. haha

Anyway, I have only been to Penrose one time to visit a friend who had a baby and so I can’t say if this is or isn’t true. I had my daughter at Memorial. Either way it would be really cool to get some actual evidence on film to see if the stories are true!

The Penrose (now Centura) Healthcare System consists of 3 active hospitals in the Springs. They are St. Francis, Penrose Main & Penrose Community. I have worked at all 3 in Security. St. Francis’s “29” Building definintely has something going on. The records room has tons of activity if you slow down and really listen. Stuff still happens in there even after all of the renovations. The tunnels referred to earlier went from the hospital to the Deaf & Blind School. The majority of them are closed up. One of my fellow security officers & I had a chance to actually enter one of those “closed” tunnels. You could feel a crackly energy inside of it. My partner was behind me and he stopped suddenly, grabbed my shoulder and said he was getting out of here. He was white as a sheet. We made a mad dash out of there and he told me he felt something touch his back and he suddenly felt the most intense evil he had ever felt in his life. I have to say that just prior to his grabbing me, I smelled this strange almost burning smell coming at me from ahead. I have seen apparitions on the second floor of the “29” Building and watched records dropp onto the floor in the records room when no one was there. I have also locked the records room and walked to the opposite end of the hall just to find the records room door unlocked when I came back. It is a straight hallway and noone had come up to the room. I could tell you all about the 11th floor at Penrose Main, but I’ll save that for another time. Just for the record, I was born at Glockner-Penrose.

charlee says:

Perhaps you could tell us about the 11th floor.

Gerrie Peterson says:

December 1, 2007, 8:40 am

I was born at Memorial Hospital in 1954 but spent many months at Saint Francis Hospital as a child. My only memory of “something” bad was when at 5 years old, in the wee hours of a dark morning, I was awakened by a male “orderly” who I’m pretty sure was transparent and I could see right through him. He touched my face, my hair and smiled. Then he was gone. I have no idea who this man was and I never told my parents about it until I was an adult. Weird, scary and kind of sad I think. But, again..I was 5..what did I know?

iluna says:

December 14, 2007, 7:18 pm

Well, the 11th floor of Main was the “cancer” floor for a long time. A lot of people didn’t leave that floor alive. I had to open the “green room” one evening to receive a body from the 11th floor. It was a beautiful young girl about 14 or 15 years old. She wasn’t warm, but rigor hadn’t quite started. I looked at her and there was moisture coming from her eyes. It looked like tears. That touched me. This is leading up to something, so please, bear with me. Later that evening I did my rounds and made myself stop thinking about her. Anyway, a few years later, Penrose Main was undergoing a lot of renovation. The 11th floor was closed and the patients were moved to other floors. We still had to do our rounds and check the empty floors as well as the filled ones. The 11th floor was on my list. I worked the midnight shift by choice. A lot less B.S. Anyway, the floor was dark and no one was around and I saw that young girl down the hall. At first I thought someone had gotten off the elevator on the wrong floor. But as I drew closer, I recognized her from years before. She wasn’t solid, but she was solid enough for me to make out her features. She smiled at me and simply dissipated. On rounds on that floor, I’ve heard chairs move, sounds like a bed was raising up or lowering, potty chairs moving across the floor and an occasional moan (maybe something in the pipes?) Sometimes my partner & I would go up there together. One time we heard voices, but we couldn’t make out what they were saying or where exactly they came from. It was always really cold in one of the rooms. The heating was on so as not to damage any of the plumbing in any of the rooms. My partner & I both checked the thermostat in that room and it was set at 67. It felt like 37. It was the only room like that. Maintenance checked it and said it was ok. Maybe he & I were just a bit crazy. As long as I worked there, I still have stories to tell. More next time, ‘K?

My mom stayed in Penrose for a week due to an ill ness she had….she told me on one occasion she was sleeping and woke up in the middle of the night and saw someone who looked like nurse at her bed side looking down at her…my mom said she looked up at her and saw no face just a black shaped figure with a gown’ she got scared and yelled and the figure vanished in front oh her…then the real nurse came in and ask her if she was ok. another night she had another experience with the t.v she woke up to the t.v being turned on so she turned it off and tried to go back to sleep then the t.v made a sound like it turned back on but the screen was still black and she heard voice from the t.v im a muffled toned. very scary stuff….when she told me that it gave me chills down my spine. cause my mom isnt scared of ghost…she came from cambodia where she said as a child she would experience way worst things than what she experienced in the hospital… she believes that her room was haunted by a lady….. she said it didnt seem like a bad entity just letting her know that shes was there.

Hello Everyone!
I am currently working at Penrose St. Francise; I have heard alot of stories and can confirm that the 2nd floor of the 29 Building is Haunted.
My Experience was on my Training Day, My Co-Worker gave me a Tour of the Entire Hospital and told me Ghost Stories and sightings reported from employees and the most common “Hot Spots” were they are likely seen; While touring the 2nd Floor of Building 29 I heard Muffled Voices (as if someone was having a conversation from one of the little storage rooms), I asked my Co-Worker if he heard that, he replied “no”, and I asked “Is there anyone that works on this floor?” and he said “nope, it’s all storage”, So we continued on with the Tour, Later on that day he showed me a picture of what looked like a Pair of eyes in the Darkness(which he took on the 2nd floor of Building 29, about a month ago)This freaked me out to this day and will not go into the building or other areas unless needed to be there….
Just wanna let ya guys know as well that I do have a 6th sense of things (Everyone does) but mine is not extravagent, it’s just a bit over average (While growing up I have seen and experienced many things that are supernatural–I am capable of going into some areas/rooms and knowing if a presence is there)
I assure you that 2nd floor of Building 29 is not the only area that has activity…but other areas of the hospital as well….

MeowMix says:

March 21, 2008, 1:29 pm

And one more thing….Do not come here….Security is Strictly Enforced…Anyone coming here with no Buisness with the Hospital will be Escorted off property by Security or Law Enforcement will be summoned to have you arrested for Traspassing on “Private Property”
This means YOU!!!

iluna says:

March 28, 2008, 10:47 am

MeowMix is right about the Security. Both Penrose Main and St. Francis are real sticklers about the safety, security and privacy of the patients, staff and visitors to ANY of their facilities.

my best friends mom used to work there and she said creepy things used to happen in the basement where the morgue is. She said supposedly when they were putting down the foundation for the hospital one of the nuns fell into the cement and they couldn’t pull her out so the nun ended up dying there.  She recalls running out of the basement everytime always saying she heard foot steps walking with hers and would hear the occasional slap of a ruler.

iluna says:

June 18, 2008, 2:37 pm

That’s funny, Virginia that you mentioned the footsteps in the basement by the morgue at Penrose Main. When I worked there, I often had to open the morgue for the people bringing the bodies down from the upper floors. I never felt fear in the basement, but I often felt a presence & often heard the sound of footsteps echoing off the walls. I don’t know if you’ve ever been down there, but there are a number of hallways (or at least there were, before all the construction)coming off the main hall by the morgue. Coming from the Silver Bullet (the elevator from the ER) if you go straight instead of turning left to the morgue, there is a hallway to your immediate right. If you go around that corner you come to 2 other hallways. One goes to the Webb Library and the other to some old rooms that were used for storage, dictation & all kinds of other things. Anyway, I used to patrol that area for the occasional transient & I would often feel something brush past me as I rounded the corner towards the library. It felt like a cloak or something as someone rushed by. It was an eerie feeling, but not frightening. I only felt fearful once at St. Francis in the basement in one of the old tunnels. But that was the only time. I have always felt that most of the entities in those hospitals were kind & benenvolent or lost & hurting – never evil.

A month before Penrose Hospital (on academy) was shut down, I gave birth to my son there. I was relocated to another end of the hospital because they needed to make room for new expectant mothers. My mother had left the room to go the bathroom and I was woken up by a voice calling my name. At first I thought I was dreaming but the voice continued to call my name (about 3 times). I sat up to check on the baby and then my mom walked into the room and the voices stopped. I asked my mom if she had heard anything but she said, “no…I was in the bathroom.” I truly believe there was something in my room that night.

My mom works at the union printers home on pikes peak ave and union blvd in Colo springs, Colo. the building is over 100 years old and used to be a tuberculosis hospital. She has worked there for 9 years and has herd a lot of first hand stories from other employees about a older man who is burned and wears a top hat. Some employees have actually quit after encountering this soul. There are 3 buildings on the site and only one is used today as a nursing home. There are also a series of tunnels under the grounds that are said to be haunted.

Chet says:

September 7, 2010, 10:00 pm

I went to visit a sick co-worker at Penrose on Cascade with my boss. On our way, I told him a story I had heard of hauntings in the basement, where the morgue was, and of employees who would see apparitions immediately after smelling ether. Ether was used for anethesia in the old days, was very unstable, and resulted in more than a few deaths. Anyway, we were talking to this man lying in his bed, and obviously in a lot of pain. I asked him why he was refusing pain killers, and he said that he couldn’t handle the dreams anymore. In his dreams, he said he saw dead people entering his room from one side, and leaving through the other. When I asked him to show me where they entered and left, he said, “in my dreams, I am always in the basement.” I will never forget the look my boss gave me at that moment.

Scott says:

September 24, 2010, 3:08 am

I’m a paramedic in the springs. I have seen the man in the top hat twice. Once while walking down the hall way he passed my partner and I. Initially we just thought it was a pt. As he passed me I took another few steps and turned around laughing and the guy was gone. Just plain gone. I was not possible to get out of the hallway that fast. The second time I saw him was approximately a month ago. We were running emergent south on union at approximately two in the morning. Both my partner and I saw him standing behind the front gate to the facility. I know of multiple paramedics who have had experiences there.

This is a very interesting website. I was a patient in the old St. Francis Hospital on Pikes Peak Ave in the 1950’s. My room every time I was there was the corner tower room. I had never been told of spirits or ghosts. I had a good experience but thinking back it was as if someone was there when no one I knew was there. Is the old hospital still there, I also was a candy striper there in the 1960’s. I would go to the tunnels and be ‘creeped out” but didnt see any thing specific. I had a baby there in 1970. Now I live out of state and plan to be in Colorado springs this summer and would like to drive by and take pictures if it is still there. Thanks for any information anyone has.

go to the pioneers museum which is the building with the green dome on top which lights up at night. It is open tuesday through thursday from 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. When my brother, my friend, and I went we went to the second floor, and into a room where a portion of Helen Jackson Hunt’s house was reconstructed in. There’s no creepy story to her life or death, but when my brother, and friend stepped onto the porch they told me that what they saw (that I did’nt see) was a shadow on the wall pass by, and when I stepped onto the porch, and looked in, I heard a sniff come from the living room while nobody was in there. The woman at the front desk said that the place is haunted when I asked her if it was. Also she said there was a death by the elevator which we rode in, and we felt like people were holding onto us during our time in the elevator. We also got feelings of uneasiness in certain areas of the building. So, go check it out you will enjoy it. We certainly did.

My mom is a skeptic, and doesn’t lie about stuff like that. based on what she has seen and told me, i can without a doubt tell you that spirits wander penrose st. francis hospital.

Hello! I’ve been working at St. Fransis for a while now, and I’ve experienced a few ghosts. And I’m curious about who they might be.
One is on the eighth floor, there’s a ghost that seems upset or just grumpy. His room is the 30th room, and when it was a patients room, he would try to pull the patient out of the bed at night and turn on the faucet in the bathroom. Now that room is a kitchen, but it still seems active. When I first when up to eight, I was watching the hand rails in the halls when I heard a deep males voice whisper “Whats your name?” in my ear. When I turned around, no one was close enough to whisper anything to me for me to hear. So, I would like more info on this ghost.
Then there’s the ER spirit. I had dubbed it the Dementor, as out of both times I had been in the ER, the place just felt sucked dry of every emotion except for pain and sorrow. I actually broke down and cried both times I was there. The first time I was in the ER, a very tall feeling… thing, came right up in my space with enough force to make me take a step back. I got the feeling that I wasn’t welcome in there at all.
So, if anyone has anything about Grumpy or Mr. Dementor please let me know.
There’s also a young woman ghost on 3rd floor, the cardio floor. She seems the nicest, and she wants to be heard, and I’m only guessing that because I mostly hear a “Psst!” or a “Hey!” in a woman voice.
So, please, let me know. I’m curious.

I worked security at St. Francis this past fall 2017 – such a beautiful building the “29” – I can see how TB patients would recover there. St. Francis protects the land – one of the safest places I’ve ever felt in my life – a feeling of calm.
