St. Francis Hospital
The room formerly used as the tuberculosis ward, is now a records room. There are at least two spirits that have been reported to haunt the area. One will often come behind nurses in the room and ask in a muffled voice, “What ya doin?”. Another spirit was reported to have locked an employee in a closet.

AS A LIFELONG NATIVE OF THE SPRINGS, THE SAYING GOES, “BORN AT MEMORIAL.. DIES AT PENROSE”. MY FATHER DIED THERE. AS HAVE MANY MEMBERS OF MY FAMILY. MY MOTHER ONCE SAID SHE SAW A MAN DRESSED IN ALL BLACK GET ON THE ELEVATOR WITH HER. ALTHOUGH SHE NEVER SPOKE TO THE MAN, SHE “KNEW” IT WAS “DEATH”. I WOULDN’T BE SUPRISED IF PENROSE/ST. FRANCIS WAS HAUNTED. GIVEN THE NUMBER OF YEARS IT’S OPERATED IN THE SPRINGS, AND THE SHEER NUMBERS OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE PASSED AWAY THERE, THERE’S GOT TO BE SOMETHING LEFT BEHIND. I’VE BEEN THERE. IT JUST FEELS LIKE DEATH. IT AIN’T A PLEASANT PLACE.

The Penrose (now Centura) Healthcare System consists of 3 active hospitals in the Springs. They are St. Francis, Penrose Main & Penrose Community. I have worked at all 3 in Security. St. Francis’s “29″ Building definintely has something going on. The records room has tons of activity if you slow down and really listen. Stuff still happens in there even after all of the renovations. The tunnels referred to earlier went from the hospital to the Deaf & Blind School. The majority of them are closed up. One of my fellow security officers & I had a chance to actually enter one of those “closed” tunnels. You could feel a crackly energy inside of it. My partner was behind me and he stopped suddenly, grabbed my shoulder and said he was getting out of here. He was white as a sheet. We made a mad dash out of there and he told me he felt something touch his back and he suddenly felt the most intense evil he had ever felt in his life. I have to say that just prior to his grabbing me, I smelled this strange almost burning smell coming at me from ahead. I have seen apparitions on the second floor of the “29″ Building and watched records dropp onto the floor in the records room when no one was there. I have also locked the records room and walked to the opposite end of the hall just to find the records room door unlocked when I came back. It is a straight hallway and noone had come up to the room. I could tell you all about the 11th floor at Penrose Main, but I’ll save that for another time. Just for the record, I was born at Glockner-Penrose.

I was born at Memorial Hospital in 1954 but spent many months at Saint Francis Hospital as a child. My only memory of “something” bad was when at 5 years old, in the wee hours of a dark morning, I was awakened by a male “orderly” who I’m pretty sure was transparent and I could see right through him. He touched my face, my hair and smiled. Then he was gone. I have no idea who this man was and I never told my parents about it until I was an adult. Weird, scary and kind of sad I think. But, again..I was 5..what did I know?

Well, the 11th floor of Main was the “cancer” floor for a long time. A lot of people didn’t leave that floor alive. I had to open the “green room” one evening to receive a body from the 11th floor. It was a beautiful young girl about 14 or 15 years old. She wasn’t warm, but rigor hadn’t quite started. I looked at her and there was moisture coming from her eyes. It looked like tears. That touched me. This is leading up to something, so please, bear with me. Later that evening I did my rounds and made myself stop thinking about her. Anyway, a few years later, Penrose Main was undergoing a lot of renovation. The 11th floor was closed and the patients were moved to other floors. We still had to do our rounds and check the empty floors as well as the filled ones. The 11th floor was on my list. I worked the midnight shift by choice. A lot less B.S. Anyway, the floor was dark and no one was around and I saw that young girl down the hall. At first I thought someone had gotten off the elevator on the wrong floor. But as I drew closer, I recognized her from years before. She wasn’t solid, but she was solid enough for me to make out her features. She smiled at me and simply dissipated. On rounds on that floor, I’ve heard chairs move, sounds like a bed was raising up or lowering, potty chairs moving across the floor and an occasional moan (maybe something in the pipes?) Sometimes my partner & I would go up there together. One time we heard voices, but we couldn’t make out what they were saying or where exactly they came from. It was always really cold in one of the rooms. The heating was on so as not to damage any of the plumbing in any of the rooms. My partner & I both checked the thermostat in that room and it was set at 67. It felt like 37. It was the only room like that. Maintenance checked it and said it was ok. Maybe he & I were just a bit crazy. As long as I worked there, I still have stories to tell. More next time, ‘K?

My mom stayed in Penrose for a week due to an ill ness she had….she told me on one occasion she was sleeping and woke up in the middle of the night and saw someone who looked like nurse at her bed side looking down at her…my mom said she looked up at her and saw no face just a black shaped figure with a gown’ she got scared and yelled and the figure vanished in front oh her…then the real nurse came in and ask her if she was ok. another night she had another experience with the t.v she woke up to the t.v being turned on so she turned it off and tried to go back to sleep then the t.v made a sound like it turned back on but the screen was still black and she heard voice from the t.v im a muffled toned. very scary stuff….when she told me that it gave me chills down my spine. cause my mom isnt scared of ghost…she came from cambodia where she said as a child she would experience way worst things than what she experienced in the hospital… she believes that her room was haunted by a lady….. she said it didnt seem like a bad entity just letting her know that shes was there.

Hello Everyone!
I am currently working at Penrose St. Francise; I have heard alot of stories and can confirm that the 2nd floor of the 29 Building is Haunted.
My Experience was on my Training Day, My Co-Worker gave me a Tour of the Entire Hospital and told me Ghost Stories and sightings reported from employees and the most common “Hot Spots” were they are likely seen; While touring the 2nd Floor of Building 29 I heard Muffled Voices (as if someone was having a conversation from one of the little storage rooms), I asked my Co-Worker if he heard that, he replied “no”, and I asked “Is there anyone that works on this floor?” and he said “nope, it’s all storage”, So we continued on with the Tour, Later on that day he showed me a picture of what looked like a Pair of eyes in the Darkness(which he took on the 2nd floor of Building 29, about a month ago)This freaked me out to this day and will not go into the building or other areas unless needed to be there….
Just wanna let ya guys know as well that I do have a 6th sense of things (Everyone does) but mine is not extravagent, it’s just a bit over average (While growing up I have seen and experienced many things that are supernatural–I am capable of going into some areas/rooms and knowing if a presence is there)
I assure you that 2nd floor of Building 29 is not the only area that has activity…but other areas of the hospital as well….

And one more thing….Do not come here….Security is Strictly Enforced…Anyone coming here with no Buisness with the Hospital will be Escorted off property by Security or Law Enforcement will be summoned to have you arrested for Traspassing on “Private Property”
This means YOU!!!

MeowMix is right about the Security. Both Penrose Main and St. Francis are real sticklers about the safety, security and privacy of the patients, staff and visitors to ANY of their facilities.

my best friends mom used to work there and she said creepy things used to happen in the basement where the morgue is. She said supposedly when they were putting down the foundation for the hospital one of the nuns fell into the cement and they couldn’t pull her out so the nun ended up dying there. She recalls running out of the basement everytime always saying she heard foot steps walking with hers and would hear the occasional slap of a ruler.

That’s funny, Virginia that you mentioned the footsteps in the basement by the morgue at Penrose Main. When I worked there, I often had to open the morgue for the people bringing the bodies down from the upper floors. I never felt fear in the basement, but I often felt a presence & often heard the sound of footsteps echoing off the walls. I don’t know if you’ve ever been down there, but there are a number of hallways (or at least there were, before all the construction)coming off the main hall by the morgue. Coming from the Silver Bullet (the elevator from the ER) if you go straight instead of turning left to the morgue, there is a hallway to your immediate right. If you go around that corner you come to 2 other hallways. One goes to the Webb Library and the other to some old rooms that were used for storage, dictation & all kinds of other things. Anyway, I used to patrol that area for the occasional transient & I would often feel something brush past me as I rounded the corner towards the library. It felt like a cloak or something as someone rushed by. It was an eerie feeling, but not frightening. I only felt fearful once at St. Francis in the basement in one of the old tunnels. But that was the only time. I have always felt that most of the entities in those hospitals were kind & benenvolent or lost & hurting – never evil.

A month before Penrose Hospital (on academy) was shut down, I gave birth to my son there. I was relocated to another end of the hospital because they needed to make room for new expectant mothers. My mother had left the room to go the bathroom and I was woken up by a voice calling my name. At first I thought I was dreaming but the voice continued to call my name (about 3 times). I sat up to check on the baby and then my mom walked into the room and the voices stopped. I asked my mom if she had heard anything but she said, “no…I was in the bathroom.” I truly believe there was something in my room that night.

My mom works at the union printers home on pikes peak ave and union blvd in Colo springs, Colo. the building is over 100 years old and used to be a tuberculosis hospital. She has worked there for 9 years and has herd a lot of first hand stories from other employees about a older man who is burned and wears a top hat. Some employees have actually quit after encountering this soul. There are 3 buildings on the site and only one is used today as a nursing home. There are also a series of tunnels under the grounds that are said to be haunted.
