This is a very interesting website. I was a patient in the old St. Francis Hospital on Pikes Peak Ave in the 1950's. My room every time I was there was the corner tower room. I had never been told of spirits or ghosts. I had a good experience but thinking back it was as if someone was there when no one I knew was there. Is the old hospital still there, I also was a candy striper there in the 1960's. I would go to the tunnels and be 'creeped out" but didnt see any thing specific. I had a baby there in 1970. Now I live out of state and plan to be in Colorado springs this summer and would like to drive by and take pictures if it is still there. Thanks for any information anyone has.

I'm a paramedic in the springs. I have seen the man in the top hat twice. Once while walking down the hall way he passed my partner and I. Initially we just thought it was a pt. As he passed me I took another few steps and turned around laughing and the guy was gone. Just plain gone. I was not possible to get out of the hallway that fast. The second time I saw him was approximately a month ago. We were running emergent south on union at approximately two in the morning. Both my partner and I saw him standing behind the front gate to the facility. I know of multiple paramedics who have had experiences there.

I went to visit a sick co-worker at Penrose on Cascade with my boss. On our way, I told him a story I had heard of hauntings in the basement, where the morgue was, and of employees who would see apparitions immediately after smelling ether. Ether was used for anethesia in the old days, was very unstable, and resulted in more than a few deaths. Anyway, we were talking to this man lying in his bed, and obviously in a lot of pain. I asked him why he was refusing pain killers, and he said that he couldn't handle the dreams anymore. In his dreams, he said he saw dead people entering his room from one side, and leaving through the other. When I asked him to show me where they entered and left, he said, "in my dreams, I am always in the basement." I will never forget the look my boss gave me at that moment.

My mom works at the union printers home on pikes peak ave and union blvd in Colo springs, Colo. the building is over 100 years old and used to be a tuberculosis hospital. She has worked there for 9 years and has herd a lot of first hand stories from other employees about a older man who is burned and wears a top hat. Some employees have actually quit after encountering this soul. There are 3 buildings on the site and only one is used today as a nursing home. There are also a series of tunnels under the grounds that are said to be haunted.

A month before Penrose Hospital (on academy) was shut down, I gave birth to my son there. I was relocated to another end of the hospital because they needed to make room for new expectant mothers. My mother had left the room to go the bathroom and I was woken up by a voice calling my name. At first I thought I was dreaming but the voice continued to call my name (about 3 times). I sat up to check on the baby and then my mom walked into the room and the voices stopped. I asked my mom if she had heard anything but she said, "no...I was in the bathroom." I truly believe there was something in my room that night.

That's funny, Virginia that you mentioned the footsteps in the basement by the morgue at Penrose Main. When I worked there, I often had to open the morgue for the people bringing the bodies down from the upper floors. I never felt fear in the basement, but I often felt a presence & often heard the sound of footsteps echoing off the walls. I don't know if you've ever been down there, but there are a number of hallways (or at least there were, before all the construction)coming off the main hall by the morgue. Coming from the Silver Bullet (the elevator from the ER) if you go straight instead of turning left to the morgue, there is a hallway to your immediate right. If you go around that corner you come to 2 other hallways. One goes to the Webb Library and the other to some old rooms that were used for storage, dictation & all kinds of other things. Anyway, I used to patrol that area for the occasional transient & I would often feel something brush past me as I rounded the corner towards the library. It felt like a cloak or something as someone rushed by. It was an eerie feeling, but not frightening. I only felt fearful once at St. Francis in the basement in one of the old tunnels. But that was the only time. I have always felt that most of the entities in those hospitals were kind & benenvolent or lost & hurting - never evil.

my best friends mom used to work there and she said creepy things used to happen in the basement where the morgue is. She said supposedly when they were putting down the foundation for the hospital one of the nuns fell into the cement and they couldn't pull her out so the nun ended up dying there. She recalls running out of the basement everytime always saying she heard foot steps walking with hers and would hear the occasional slap of a ruler.
