Real Haunted House

Stepp Cemetery

Elletsville, Indiana

In this cemetery, only accessible by foot, around midnight, an apparition of a lady appears on a rock that resembles a chair. On Halloween, many cult groups venture to this place to conduct ceremonies.

Apparently this is true. The cemetery is in Mooresville and it is not a rock that you see the woman on it is a tree stump. Going there tonight with some friends, will report back later.

Geez, your all wrong…
Yeah, it’s a stump, not a rock…
It’s not in Elletsville and definately not in Mooresville… It’s in the Morgan/Monroe forest, off of hwy.37… You turn into the forest between Bloomington and Martinsville.
I’m not sure what “town” it would be considered in, but it’s close to a little town called Hindustan.

I went to this last weekend, but I was there before midnight and it is not a rock, it’s a stump by a tree.We tried to look for the trail that you have to go back to where the lady comes out from, but we could not see the trail. So if you are planning on going there, I would take a flashlight if I were you.

If you are headed north on highway 37, between Bloomington and Martinsville watch for Morgan/Monroe State forest sign on the right. Turn right, go to stop sign, turn right. Entrance to Morgan/Monroe State Forest will be on left, turn left at entrance. I’m not exactly sure on how far, but go a little ways and cemetery is on the left. Cemetery isn’t labeled. There is a large wooden gate at entrance between two large stone posts I believe. Cemetery is either just before a shelter house on the right or just after it, I can’t remember for sure. Hope this helps you.

I’m going to this place on halloween and I’m hoping to experience some activity. I’ve always been very perceptive of spirits and if there is anything there I will know. I’ll be sure to post my findings.
Blessed Be….

HERE ARE FUNCTIONAL DIRECTIONS and some comments about the graveyard and what to look for (it’s a really neat place, no matter what stories you do or don’t buy):

Go north on Walnut Street out of Bloomington. As you start leaving town (i.e. you’ve gone past the bowling alley and are getting out into nothingness), you’ll reach an intersection of Old 37. Turn right onto it.

Take Old 37 for 5-7 miles until you see Anderson Road on the right side. Then take Anderson for about 4 or 5 miles (again, a guestimate) until you start passing a big cornfield on the right side, and then you see a farm house. Be careful. There’s an old gravel road that goes off to the left shortly before it, and you’ll be tempted to believe that it’s the right one because it’s a spooky drive (I turned), but THAT’S NOT IT. You’ll want to go maybe half a mile further and turn left (90 degrees) on a nice newly paved road (recently paved it). It’s technically Bean Blossom Road, but it’s not marked at that intersection, so you just have to guess and cross your fingers. There aren’t many roads on the left at that point, though, so you’ll probably get it right.

So anyway, follow that road (Bean Blossom) until it dead ends into the National Forest Road. Turn left, and then immediately start looking for the entrance to the cemetery’s trail on the right side: no more than a tenth of a mile. You’ll recognize it by a short stone wall - in fact, the word ‘Stepp’ is chalked on it, with an arrow pointing back… there is also a lot of graffiti on the wall.

Anyway, so just follow that path back (it’s dark, so bring a flashlight for safety) for about a hundred meters maybe, and you’ll run right into a stone cemetery sign and you can explore the rather small cemetery.

NOTE: The cemetery stretches out back and to the left, mostly (just so you can stay oriented when you get there).

ALSO NOTE: Despite that fact that it’s unfortunately often a little trashed from partying, this is actually a really neat little cemetery, and I personally got a very calm, relaxed feeling once I was there (though I’ll admit walking up and back on the path was a little spooky). It also has some really interesting gravestones. First of all (and most importantly if you’re going for the spook factor), there’s a stone marked ‘Baby Lester’ in the back of the cemetery (all the way to the back left of where you come in). It’s a flat stone laid right into the ground. There’s also a grave with Russian on it, as well as a fairly recent one of who I think was an IU physics professor: it says “Never at Rest” (a particle physics reference, but also a little spooky, if you ask me).

yea, umm.. stepp cemetary isnt haunted by the lady on the stump at all. The lady thats sits on the stump was my grandmother. Her name was Olethia Walls, but back then it was lester. When all these storys about stepp cemetary came out she was still alive. The grave thats right by the stump is my uncle who was born still born. They call him baby Lester. As a matter of fact, if you go look up some of Martinsville times’s news paper reports on this, you’ll read that people have called in befor reporting that at the time of these tall tales my grandmother was still alive. Oh, an I really appreciate the person who had sex on the stump next to my uncle’s grave site. Another part to this story is how the stump got to look like it does. If you look at the stump it kinda looks like a tree, right? Well my grandmother an one of my uncle’s were jokeing about how it would be funny if it looked like a chair. One nite he got drunk an cut it into a shape of a chair. So I just figured I’d inlightin all of you a little bit.
