Tavern
Sometime in the 1800’s two Indians were picking berries near the edge of town, when a group of angry white townspeople found them and dragged them back to the center of town. They were accused of raping and killing a young white girl and they were hanged outside the local tavern. A few years later, a white man confessed to raping and killing the young girl. The tavern still stands in downtown Brainerd and sometimes at night when the bar closes, people have reported hearing the cries of Indian people and the beating of drums.
Where in Brainerd is this? I’d love to see it.

I live in Brainerd and its actually a somewhat quiet community, in exception from Thursday evenings, which I believe is Police saturation night, but thats only what I’ve heard, anyhow, I know where the tavern is, and the woods in the area are eerie, but eerie is really cool, and ghosts can’t hurt you right? I heard that too, I believe in ghosts and spirits, but… once when i was little I thought that I had seen a ghost in my Deerwood home. A couple of days later my tonsils became very swollen and I had to get them removed, is it possible that a lost soul or spirit could have been responsible for something like that?

This is actually a true story, It was actually published in the Brainerd Daily Dispatch in earlier years about three indian males that were in town, and a person was found killed just on the outskirts of the old Birlington Northern railroad center. They were taken into Brainerd (which is where downtown brainerd is now) and hung in a pine tree that was outside a tavern that was on the corner of front streen and the street that is now 7th street. The actual tavern burned down a few years after that and then moved to a new location…however the name of the tavern stayed the same; The Last Turn Saloon…
You can go to the Brainerd Public library and find the actual Brainerd Dispatch Article in either the microfilm room or in sesquinsenial book of braierd also published by the Braierd Dispatch. (it is a green paperback bound book in the reference section) it has all kinds of articles of brainerd’s history and there is even a picture of the tree and the bar from an old paper article about the hanging.

I have heard from numerous bartenders at The Last Turn that the bar is haunted. They’ve told me of weird noises they’ve heard and have seen things fall off of shelves that really aren’t able to fall so easily. One bartender in particular wouldn’t say a whole lot about it but he did say he was scared to be there alone. I’m not sure if this is the bar that is referenced in this story though.

Why were Indians in Minnesota around that time? The British were too busy occupying India.
Um…use politically correct terms.
Comment by Your Mom | 10.24.2006 | 6:06 pm
to the person known as “your mom” you must not be very bright! Indians have been here in Minnesota for a very long time. There are many reservations here but the land here in Minnesota belonged to mostly Indians. I believe this story. There are alot of people who will kill another because of their race or religion.
Comment by krissy | 11.15.2006 | 3:15 am
There is a rail road track near this location. Two Indians were walking near the tracks. One puts his head on the rail track and says “Buffalo come”, the other says “how do you know?” the other one says “sticky ear”.

Ghosts can hurt you, if they want to. Especially when natives are pissed… My uncle’s friend almost died when ghost attacked him in his house on his reservation. He was in the hopital for 2 weeks. I would love to go to Brainerd and found out where this place is. It would be cool if I saw them. My family can see spirits.
Comment by Kelli | 12.7.2006 | 11:22 am
Ummm… to your mom…. Native Americans was here before the white people. It was our land before they tricked us and stole it. They gave us alcohol for our land. How stupid can you be if you didn’t know that. Maybe you should go back to school! That mad me very pissed off!

For those of you who want to know where this siting is I can tell you. I use to live in Brainerd and one of my good friends told me this story and when I asked her what Tavern she told me so here is the answer “The Blue OX”
Comment by JoAnna | 01.31.2007 | 9:59 pm
OK, YOUR MOM… Indian’s as in Native Americans, not Indians from India!
To those saying white people tricked the Natives and stole their land…whatever! If you want to call peopel dumb, then call the people who traded land for alcohol dumb. HELLO! Not to mention I think the ”white” people have paid for this land over and over. Every reservation I have seen is trashed. I don’t see this land being taken care of very well. But all I hear is “They stole our land so we deserve to live here free, not take care of our land, make our homes look like dumps and laugh our assses off all the way to the bank with our government checks!”
This is just what I see for the majority. Not all Native’s are this way, but it’s the ones that use and abuse that give a bad name. One of my best friends is Native American and he works hard and is ashamed of the way many of his people treat the land they live on.
BOOOYA! The people who have ‘taken’ your land have paid for it over and over and over and over…So quit your bitching and take care of the land you are so upset about losing!
Comment by B.S. | 02.24.2007 | 3:15 pm
Response to B.S. Does that stand for (Brain’s Small) by chance? The white people never tricked anyone. They lied and broke promises and are still doing it today. There are these things called treaties that were signed way before you fell out of the monkeys butt. If you were to look into the real history of the United States you would see it! P.S learn some grammar B.S
Comment by Gary J. | 03.11.2007 | 2:44 pm
There are a few things I would like to point out…
(1) There was never (and never will) be land to own. It was NEVER ours (Native Americans or ‘whites’) to own in the first place, thus no one can “own” it.
(2) sure there may be some bad apples in the Native community, but do you not forget about the bad apples in the white community also? We are all equal, non are better then others. Everyone has a right to be who they are… some just mis-use that right. Like those who are judgemental of people they have NEVER met.
(3) There has been one promise kept by the government… and that is the promise of the reservation… and that in itself is a long shot becasue the reservations given to the individual Nations were and still are getting cut down in size today.
The american public and governments are very biased towards Native peoples and that is a sore spot that needs to be worked on I think…
Now about the haunting. I believe every word of it and yes many “different” people have been killed because of the color of their skin or how they talk.
Comment by Robyn | 03.16.2007 | 8:19 pm
This is to B.S. I couldn’t agree with you more. First off if we were like every other civilization we would have killed indians off but we didn’t. We gave indians land, we gave indians money, we gave indians the exclusive right to casinos, and we granted indians sovereignty. So why do I keep hearing them whine? Nobody alive today took any land away from any indians. White people should stop taking responsibility for it because white people today have took nothing from the indians of today.
Comment by Tron | 03.18.2007 | 5:30 pm
If you want to talk about treaties and old laws, wasn’t there something like if you see more than 5 native americans together it was concidered a war path and you could kill them? I thought I heard something to that effect. I may be wrong and if I am I know someone will correct me.
Comment by AMS | 03.24.2007 | 1:53 pm
All I have to say is Bulls*it. Been to the Last Turn many a times and there are absolutely no ghosts in it. However, the apartment above it could be haunted. A kid got shot to death in the apartment a few years ago over a dumb playstation of all things.

umm yeah this is to ALL the people who are dissing the whites…um yeah just to tell you all…u shouldnt be dissing whites…im a white person…i think the last thing our nation needs is to be separated…okay well its too late for that soo idk w/e …but umm yeah im from Brainerd…and i always wanted to visit a haunted place near me…so ill definatley have to check this place out…i think its terrible that those people murdered those indians..but remember..those people are from back then…this is now…not ALL white people kill…just like not all indians…scalp heads or whatever soo stop dissing the white..its not nice..
Comment by SammyWammy | 07.30.2007 | 4:49 pm
I have to agree with some of the point made on the comments. Like how no one can “own” land, very true. I live only 10-20 mins away from a reservation and yes there are bad people who come from there that moved into the town i live in but i also ahve many awsome friends from there. It is just like “white” people as well too. I must say this story creeped me out i dont wanna go to get my surgery now there haha. but heres sumthing to think about..no where NO WHERE does it say that “white blacks mexicans asian indians” or any race, can degrated people for color of skin or for even being fat to skinny to mean or anything we are all gods children he looks at us all the same way..why cant we?
Comment by kadee | 08.11.2007 | 2:27 am
To the comment Joie made. Actually, the kid who got shot above a bar was above Tropical Nights, not The Last Turn. And to Joanna, I’ve never heard of The Blue Ox being haunted but the tavern in this story is definitely referencing The Last Turn. It’s a true story and like I said in my first post, I know several people who have and still do bartend there and yes, it is haunted.

I live in Brainerd and worked at The Last Turn Saloon years ago and do remember strange things going on late at night after closing usually chairs being moved when you leave the room, noises, and an uneasy feeling in the very back away from the business area where the store room was, I always hated to go back there even with someone else you just felt like you were’nt welcome in there. Whether or not this is related ot the story I dont know, never heard it before. There is a story on the back of the menu there that talks about the old location, a hanging tree out front, and one of the last hangs in the town but I dont recall it mentioning indians. If you get a chance to stop in give it a read its very interesting. I do know that the Last Turn is the oldest bar in the city dating back to the 1800’s so to find it haunted would not suprise me a bit. On a side note the original location is only a block from what was the Brainerd National Bank that was robbed by Baby Face Nelson in 1933,

I cannot believe after all these years, people continue to be so prejudice. I am half white and half Native, and have felt the repercussions of hate from both sides. No matter what happened in the past, the important thing is that we learn from our mistakes and move on. Regardless, we all exist now, all races, and we need to make a better world for our children, so they do not endure the pain and suffering any of our ancestors have.

TO ALL THOSE WHO ARE HISTORICALLY WRONG. THIS IS HOW THE WHITE SETTLERS TOOK OVER ON THIS LAND WE NATIVES CALL TURTLE ISLAND, FIRST THEY STARTED WITH GERM WARFARE: SMALL POX, TYPHOID MARY, JUST TO NAME A FEW. THEN THERE WAS CHEMICAL WARFARE: ALCOHOL…. NEXT IT WAS CONCENTRATION CAMPS THAT ARE NOW. RESERVATIONS. WHERE DO YOU THINK HITLER GOT HIS IDEAS TO KILL AND PERSECUTE THE JEWISH PEOPLE? YOURS TRULY THE WHITE GOVERNMENT OF THE US OF A. READ THE HISTORY OF THE BEGINNING OF THE UNITED STATES. NOT WHAT PEOPLE TELL YOU. AND GET IT FROM A TRUE NATIVE AMERICAN. THE SCHOOLS TEACH YOU ALL ABOUT THE WHITE MAN WAYS, BUT NOTHING IS TAUGHT ABOUT WHAT HAPPEN TO THE FIRST GENERATIONS THAT HAVE BEEN HERE FOR CENTURIES. TO ALL MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS OUT THERE… LOUD AND PROUD TO BE A NATIVE OF THIS COUNTRY……. BY THE WAY, OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS ARE MOVING UP FROM THE SOUTH, THIS WAS TAUGHT TO MANY OF US. THIS WAS PREDICTED BY A NATIVE CHIEF.

Thats pretty cool, I grew up in Staples, which is like 45 mins from Brainerd on highway 10, I wish I would have known about that before when I was still living there I would have checked it out. That sounds pretty fun, I am not scared of that stuff like most people, though I do believe you can be hurt by spirits but I am still not afriad, and very interested in it.
